TREE PITTSBURGH Tree Pittsburgh is an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City's vitality by restoring and protecting the urban forest through tree maintenance, planting, education and advocacy.

While working for GBBN Architecture - Pittsburgh, I employed AutoCAD, lasercutting, and manual techniques to create a scale model of a building designed for Tree Pittsburgh. The materiality consisted of beechwood, basswood, chipboard, baby’s breath, and ABS plastic. I delivered the model of their new home to the site along the Monogahela, where it was 4

I was charged with creating a proposal for an office space that would attach to and compliment an existing industrial building that was to be rehabbed. Located along the Monogahela River in Pittsburgh, PA, the addition would take cues from the existing building and its industrial context in steel country.

atheneum noun 1.an institution for the promotion of learning

For our Autumn 2015 design studio, we were tasked with creating an atheneum for the town of Columbus, IN. It was to serve as a visitorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; center, gallery, and learning center. Ammenites were to include a library, a gift shop, a cafe, housing, and outdoor garden/terrace spaces. My design addresses the vernacular of the surrounding small town downtown by incorporating monumental masonry walls that echo those of the buildings across the street.

However, masonry overhangs, revealed concrete structure, and glass curtain walls reveal the contemporary nature of the building.

HILLSIDE INTERVENTION

One of the critical missing links in Cincinnati’s pedestrian network are its stairway connections. The stairways once connected the hilltops with the urban basin below. Some lie abandoned, buried in the woods.

While others have collapsed from lack of maintenance. Still others have been removed over “safety” concerns. I reimagined the restoration of a pedestrian hillside path that would connect DAAP and DPMT7, a design collective nearby. A critical element of the path included the restoration of a lost public staircase near the University of Cincinnati that would connect two existing recreational areas separated by a steep grade. A monolithic concrete overlook would capatalize on the now hidden views to be found at this vista, while a continuous “line” of corten steel at times embedded in the ground and at other times emerging overhead would mark the hillside path. Representation was accomplished through a large-scale plaster model and a series of transfers and drawings.

That the physical environment has the ability to shape human behavior differently across socioeconomic groups has been borne out in research on architectural exclusion. This is exemplified in Cincinnati, where access between the university-oriented Clifton Heights and the neighboring community known as the Northern Liberties is limited, the two areas positioned on opposite sides of a steep hillside that divides the city along socioeconomic lines. Although most of the infrastructure has been removed, the two communities were once connected via an incline and an extensive public stair system. Decreased connectivity likely disproportionately affects the low-income population below, as car ownership is less prevalent in that group. In addition, although some student housing is just a quarter of a mile away from popular attractions below, that community is perceived as a destination rather than a neighbor. My work conceptualizes a host of interventions to increase 16

A HOUSE FOR MONET Using a palimpsest technique, wherein thick boards are drawn on time and time again to produce a multi-layered product that shows previous iterations of drawings on the board, thereby giving a glimpse of the process therein, I designed a â&#x20AC;&#x153;House for Monetâ&#x20AC;? for submittal to International Competitions in Architecture, which holds competitions for buildings commemorating historical celebrities. The site in Vernon, France and the function of the building as a slowly-rotating studio reference his life along the Seine and his artistic process, often revisiting the same subject matter through many iterations, day after day.
