BELLE BALL OF THE

We sat down with slick Spanish designer Isabel de Pedro to discuss her design process, the power of print and celebrating femininity in all of its forms. JB: Hi Isabel. Firstly I would like to start off by thanking you for taking the time to answer a few of our questions. You have had a long, successful career in design. Could you share with us a little about your journey in regards to how you started the Isabel de Pedro brand and got it to where it is today? IdP: The Company was founded by my partner, Rafael Tous, in 1968. I joined the company two years later. At the beginning it was completely crazy! In Franco’s Spain there was no space for young fashion and as we had been travelling a lot around the world, we decided to create designs with international appeal for women, men and kids. Later we started launching complete prêt-à-porter collections. In the mid 90’s we finally decided to design purely for women and we made an important step into export. The export markets enabled us to offer better products with special designs that could be easily recognised, and that’s how we got our motif: ‘monothematic collections with special emphasis on graphics, stretch fabrics and the colour black’. JB: Who is the Isabel de Pedro woman? IdP: The Isabel de Pedro woman is a self-confident woman who feels good when she’s noticed. I believe that my designs are like a celebration of femininity. I’m glad when these women feel beautiful and don’t hide their bodies, when the clothes they are wearing allow them to carry on their hectic lives without giving up comfort and elegance. JB: Could you tell us a little bit about your design process? IdP: We always start from a particular theme. Sometimes, if it’s a country, I travel there to visit it. Well, I mean, sometimes you feel that there’s a certain country you should discover, so I always try to use these experiences for new collections. We also get lots of inspiration from certain books, from movies or even when buying clothes around the world, sometimes we discover pictures and colours and shapes and so we start “creating” in our mind.

designing style.

IdP: Well, if that means the richness of our artists and different cultures, then yes, definitely. A while ago I made a collection dedicated to Gaudi, later one dedicated to the Golden Century and another one dedicated to my homeland, the Basque country. I’m actually working on a collection inspired by Barcelona and the Mediterranean. Spain has the same influence on me as any other country does.

JB: You are known for your use of bold graphic prints. What is it about print that makes it so appealing? IdP: The prints take you immediately to the universe I want to create for each collection. At the same time they are loyal to what I like, they are an exact reflection of my designing style. I believe very much that a designer should be recognisable and to openly show his/her personal concept of fashion. JB: Every season your collections have very clear inspirations whilst remaining true to the IdP ethos. Throughout the many collections you have designed do you have a stand-out favourite and if so which one is it? IdP: I especially love the Spring-Summer 2004 collection, the one inspired by the Basque country. In that time ETA still was active, so it was a very risky but necessary bet for me. I wanted to reassert the extraordinary cultural richness of my homeland, starting with its language, the Euskera. I was also having an especially difficult time personally and the development of the collection was very complicated, but we discovered new printing and fabric combination techniques, which signified the before and after of my career. Some Spanish customers rejected my designs because they believed that the collection was a political provocation. JB: Can you give our customers a sneak peek as to what to expect from Isabel de Pedro in Winter 2014? IdP: The collection is inspired by Peru and Peru definitely means colour to me. Of course I’m still using black which is the colour of my life, but I started playing with fuchsia, yellow and green. I also tried to find new volumes, especially for jackets. Our customers were pleasantly surprised, and I like them to be happy! Shop the SS14 Isabel de Pedro collection online and instore now. Words by Adam Mooney

I P R EDI C T A R I OT Words by Adam Mooney

‘Anglomania’:

an intense interest in, or tendency to imitate English institutions, manners, customs and dress.

I

n 1993 Dame Vivienne Westwood entitled her Autumn/Winter Gold Label collection ‘Anglomania’ as it embraced this admiration for English traditions, tailoring and fabrics. It also was the first showcase of her tartan design ‘The MacAndreas’. The ‘Anglomania’ Gold Label collection quickly became a predominant reference point which was synonymous with the illustrious Vivienne Westwood archive, so much so that it made perfect sense to name the brand’s diffusion line after it. The inception of Vivienne Westwood Anglomania became a reality in 1998 which was coincidentally the same year Vivienne was awarded the Queen’s Award for Export, in recognition of the company’s growing international market.

The youthful brand pays homage to Westwood’s instantly recognisable iconic tailoring and draped silhouettes which includes styles from the infamous punk, pirate and bondage collections. Anglomania completes the Vivienne Westwood portfolio by catering to a younger, casual and often more adventurous, fashion savvy customer. For Spring/Summer 2014 the Anglomania collection was inspired by ‘The Exploration of Lost Civilisations’, beginning with their artistry and looking closely at mythological figures, patterns, metal works, architecture and motifs. From the Mayans to the Cocle tribe of South America, the mystery of these ancient civilisations is the influence behind this print focused collection. The Maze print references ancient Mayan markings and hieroglyphics and has a dynamic sports feel which pays homage to Vivienne Westwood’s Autumn / Winter 1983 collection ‘Witches’, which was partly inspired by New York graffiti artist Keith Haring. This print can be seen adorning a variety of eye-catching pieces including the Melita top and the Quest dress.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD ANGLOMANIA

Anglomania is now a force in its own right within the fashion world and stands proudly as its own critically acclaimed collection whilst still taking inspiration from the mainline Vivienne Westwood Gold Label range.

For eveningwear, the collection offers Aztec print inspired taffeta dresses with gold and iridescent finishes, inspired by the wondrous works of the Cocle culture of Peru, who were famous for creating handcrafted rarities in gold. Invest in a piece of fashion history and either visit us in store or online to shop the SS14 Vivienne Westwood Anglomania and MAN collections.

The Mirage print appears as a blurred illusion referencing a photograph of a decaying wall. The print evokes the idea of excavated cave prints and archaeology. This soft print seen on stunning silk harem trousers and figure flattering draped dresses has a strong visual impact while the muted colours ensure the pieces remain subtle making them a welcome addition to any summer wardrobe.

N O R T H E R N

S O U L We sit down and talk heritage, history and high quality clothing with Vice Chairman of J Barbour & Sons, Helen Barbour. JB: Similarly to Jules B, Barbour is a family run business that heralds from the North-East of England. Do you think Barbour’s Northern heritage has a strong influence on the company’s design aesthetic? HB: The Barbour story began in 1894 when founder John Barbour established himself in the burgeoning port of South Shields supplying oilskins and other garments to protect the fishermen, sailors, dockers and industrial workers from the worst of the North Sea weather. We were very much a product of our region, producing garments that were fit for purpose to provide protection against the cold weather for the needs of those people working outdoors. As the brand has become more widely known for our casual and lifestyle clothing, many of our products are still inspired by the archives with a contemporary twist. For example, the Fishing Standen jacket is inspired by one of our fishing jackets. The Martindale shawl takes its inspiration from Barbour’s long association with Fair Isle wool.

JB: Barbour has been in business for an impressive 120 years this year. What is it about the brand that makes it so relevant in 2014? HB: Barbour is at its best when it marries modern sophisticated city living with its rugged past. The brand, run by the family, has managed to reinvent itself several times since it began in 1894. Certain things won’t ever change, such as listening to our customers, putting quality first and staying true to our roots. Our goal is to become the best British lifestyle brand worldwide and we have introduced a wardrobe of clothes including knitwear, shirts, trousers, footwear and accessories alongside our iconic outerwear.

Helen Barbour

54.

JB: What do you feel truly sets Barbour apart from other brands that are predominantly outerwear based? HB: Over the years, Barbour has come to stand for a lifestyle – the dream of the British countryside. This has given us the opportunity to offer other products that fit in with this lifestyle. Outerwear continues to be an important part of our brand but the difference, I think, is that we now offer our customers so much more than just outerwear. Shirts such as the checked Fleck shirt, Half Union Jack tee and Mason stripe tees for men and the Daisy crew and Rainer t-shirt for women add colour to the collections and offer our customers more choice. Our customers always know what they will get from Barbour – high quality clothing at a fair price that is both practical and stylish.

customers always know ‘Our what they will get from Barbour

high quality clothing at a fair price that is both practical and stylish.

This is a development of delivering what we have always done – providing garments that fulfil the changing needs and expectations of our customers without compromising Barbour’s founding values of quality, durability, fitness for purpose and attention to detail. Our growth has been about evolution not revolution as new younger generations have discovered the timeless style of Barbour.

JB: With a diverse following including Alexa Chung, HM The Queen and even James Bond (to name just a few), what is it that makes Barbour such a culturally transcendent product? HB: Barbour appeals to many different customers who are wearing our products for a great many reasons. They want clothing that they know will perform whatever the activity, whether that’s in the city or the country. Our evolution as a lifestyle brand has meant that we are now offering a greater choice of products and styles and this has broadened our appeal to a wider customer base. Having our products featured in films such as ‘Skyfall’ has created additional interest and the Beacon sports jacket based on the jacket worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in ‘Skyfall’, has become one of our best selling jackets.

JB: You have recently launched the International range of Barbour as a stand-alone brand with its first store opening on Piccadilly in London last year. What is it about Barbour’s racing/motorcycle ties that makes it so special? HB: Duncan Barbour, the third generation of the Barbour family was a keen motorcyclist and in 1936, he introduced into the range a one piece wax cotton suit called the Barbour International. Developed specifically for the 1936 International Six Day Trials (ISDT) event, and hence its name, the Barbour International became so popular that it was worn by almost every British team right up until 1977 including actor Steve McQueen in 1964. What makes it so special is that the iconic Barbour International jacket Duncan introduced in 1936 has been the inspiration for today’s motorcycle collections for men, women and children which are sold right across the globe. For example, our Black Streak collection for women is Barbour International at its most glamorous and biker chic. The Extractor quilt, Sprocket gilet and the black and white check Booker sweater are very flattering and stylish pieces to wear. The Barbour Steve McQueen collection celebrates the actor’s style - this season look out for the Greenhorn zip which is inspired by Steve’s race in the Greenhorn Enduro in California in 1963, a Steve McQueen denim jacket and rugged Desert shirt. We opened our first Barbour International store on Piccadilly in London last year and we are planning more worldwide. These stores feature jackets, knitwear, shirts, trousers and footwear inspired by our motorcycling heritage and as well as offering our existing customers a different choice of look, it has also attracted new customers who prefer the biker style.

JB: What’s on the horizon for Barbour in 2015? HB: The core values which underpin Barbour are transcendent: staying true to our roots, prioritising quality above all else, surprising without shocking, and delivering understated style. It’s a very exciting time for the brand as we continue to evolve as a global lifestyle brand offering a wardrobe of quality clothes and footwear for men, women and children.

PRINT

This season’s printed shirt trend is bold, bright and colourful and will revolutionise your summer look. An instant update for your wardrobe, a printed shirt will breathe a new lease of life into everything from jeans to blazers. Tropical influences from Hawaii crept into the collections of Woolrich and Armani Jeans while the Italian craftsmen at Ganesh showcased bold floral embroidery. The fine print is clear: this is not a trend for the faint hearted.

1. JUNGLE FEVER The jungle has been well and truly rumbled by this Armani Jeans shirt. Sure to make anyone green with envy, this shirt will look great paired with sand coloured chinos and new-season Birkenstocks for that safari style which is coveted by many....or perhaps with a pair of smart black denim jeans.
