QUALITY, TRADITIONS AND EMPOWERMENT TO EXPLORE SINCE 1922

The history

For over 99 years, Åsnes has produced robust skis for hiking and Mountain. The story begins in 1910 when the oldest of Åsnes the brothers got a job at Hagen Skifabrikk in Christiania. There he learned the trade of ski production. Åsnes has a long and rich history that bears the mark of hard work and iron will.

Skiproduction anno 1922

The Åsnes family built the first factory in 1933 and in 1937 the brothers received their first order from the military. For the first time, they had to hire people who were not in the family. Åsnes had its absolute heyday in 1977 with over 70 employees at most. 137,000 were produced pairs of skis in the factory, and 45% of the volume was exported to the United States and Canada. The beginning of the ’80s was marked by a lot of adversity and a tough market. It did not help that Åsnes were the first to produce fiberglass skis with a full steel edge. In 1982 the number of employees was down to 40 men, but Åsnes again recovered in 1984/85 due to the growing telemark trend. Many old telemarkers probably remember both the A-ski and the Comp ski.

Producing skis is very much a craft, and still today, there are around 100 manual and hand-held processes, even though the technology has developed quite a lot.

In 1998 Brødrene Åsnes Ski AS went bankrupt and a new company was established with regional investors. Åsnes was no longer a family company. The new company was named Åsnes Ski AS and was operated until 2006. Then there were two locals at Voss who had ”a dream” and revived the brand for the future. Today, Åsnes is the market leader in its segment and produces around 25,.000 - 30.000 pairs of skis annually. Åsnes is known for high-quality skis made for rugged terrain and polar regions, as well as skin the insert and short skin system that was introduced in 2003.

No doubt, the lumber used for ski production were solid back then. On this picture, you can see Jonas Åsnes, one of the founders.

Back in the 30’s the Åsnes brothers actually hauled the timber by handpowerd boats over the fjord and to the factory, as there were no roads.

1986 The expedition following Roald Amundsens old route - Monica Kristensen Solås.

1994 Liv Arnesen - the first woman in the world to reach the South Pole, unsupported and unassisted.

1997 The first expeditions consisting of only women (22 ladies) reached the North Pole, going from Ward hunt Island, Canada.

Expeditions Åsnes is probably the ski manufacturer in the world who have had their skis on most polar expeditions from the ’80s and until today. We have supported countless expeditions to Spitsbergen, Greenland, Alaska,Canada, the South and North Poles. The skis have also been used so many times to ski the full length of Norway that it is no longer possible to hold the count. Experience and testing from expeditions and yearlong cooperation with the military have given us what we today claim are the best nordic bc skis on market.

2005 Rune Gjeldnes - the world’s longes solo-skitrek (at that time). Crossed Antartica on skis (4804km, solo in 103 days).

2010 Cecilie Skog and Ryan Waters - The first to cross the Antarctic unsupported and unassisted. From Brekner Island, to the Sout Pole and to the Ross Sea.

SHORT SKINS LONG BC SKINS

Nordic BC skis are characterized as being wider than regular cross-country skis, and they in most cases have steel edges and are manufactured with a proper wood core. Mountain skiing does not have the same camber and wax-pockets as a cross-country ski for several reasons. A mountain ski should follow the terrain a completely different way than the skis used in trampled and groomed tracks. BC skis should be possible to handle under varying conditions and snowpacks, in a completely different way than classic cross-country skis. What kind of BC ski you should choose depends on the area of use, type of terrain, skills, and distance. The weight factor is most important Ski length is first and foremost determined based on body length, weight, and skills. All our models will have a dedicated table so that it is easy to choose the correct length based on body weight and height.

Photo © Jon Hunnålvatn Tøn

Overview Nordic BC Skis

For some, regardless, the height and weight in the tables won’t necessarily correlate. This is something we are aware of and that we have an understanding of. This is how it is with almost everyone types of skis. But if you are unsure of the length you should choose, then we would recommend choosing with priority in bodyweight, to get a good grip and your skills.

Therefore, we recommend choosing a ski that’s not too stiff, but at the same time not too soft for your weight when choosing the right length. A longer ski is stiffer than a shorter ski, and the opposite. This is crucial for good grip, but at the same time to maintain the properties you need to slide forward. So as a general recommendation, we recommend checking the length-table for your chosen ski model and select the right ski length based primarily on your weight as a starting point.

A good grip is the most important priority in the mountains! Most Nordic BC skis are designed for optimal load-bearing capacity and flotation We also have information and resources in the snow through a stiffer waist-section that describe in detail the treatment of skins, and decreasing bending resistance videos, and other useful information on outwards towards tips. A camber designed Åsnes Academy; asnes.com/asnes-academy. to be a compromise between grip and glide, and a stiff section underfoot, means that you do not press the skis flat to the ground as you lead the ski forward. Thus, the friction against the pocket is almost half and you save energy and reduce mechanical wear on grip wax and the skins.

”XC-like” touring skis for groomed tracks Narrower skis that will fit into groomed tracks. Usually lighter than traditional ”mountain skis”. These skis are directional stable, stiff and will be perceived as ”fast”. They will also typically have more camber, a more prominent wax pocket and feel more like a regular XC-ski.

Nordic BC skis for long treks, and primarily flatter terrain These are skis with more stiffness in the full length of the ski, a camber and wax pocked designed for grip-wax and for effective kick and glide performance. These ski excel in flatter terrain, with their load bearing capacity and when pulling a sled on longer treks. Typically directional skis, without a a lot of sidecut. Usually chosen in longer length to glide well.

These are wider Nordic BC skis, often called ”hybrids”. These skis can be considered something between a Nordic BC ski and a regular Alpine Touring ski. Fantastic skis for enthusiasts, and telemark skiers. Designed to be more playful, charge harder and to ski deeper snow in steeper and more difficult terrain. These skis might very well be a really good aption to heavier alpine touring skis. Typically, these skis do not have a proper wax pocket, but will come with a good amount of stiffness underfoot, some camber and more torsional rigidity. These skis are most suited to use with both short-skins and regular climbing skins.

Mounting

Sealing the screw holes is essential so as to avoid water entering the ski’s structure, damaging the moisture balance in the wood core and causing damage. If you unfasten a binding from an old ski, you will typically see brown screw holes caused by rot and rust if it has not been properly sealed. This means that the mounting was not done properly.

The basis for our recommendation Extensive testing, traditions and long experience gained from all the skis we have provided for expeditions, harsh mountain environments, and military NATO Forces prove that PU-adhesives work much better than ordinary glue made for wood. PU adhesives have been found to have on average 20% better properties related to the holding of the screws in the ski and in strength. Since PU adhesives also cure in contact with moisture, it has actually been shown that the strength and hold can be even stronger if the adhesives are lightly sprayed with water before mounting of the bindings. This can also be done with a moist cloth to be sure one does not use excessive glue and to avoid too much moisture. Most importantly, the PU adhesive has better properties than regular white wood glue to seal the screw holes, because the PU-glue expands and has a more flexible and water-resistant composition.

Photo © The Polar Academy

We empathize that all Åsnes skis should be mounted with Polyurethane (PU-glue) one-component, solventfree adhesive. Polyurethane has been developed as a universal adhesive for bonding wood to various other materials. Such as metal, plastic, rubber, and also wood against wood. PU glue cures by means of humidity, moisture in the material and materials being glued together. The glue also expands during the curing process, which makes the glue particularly suitable for sealing the pre-drilled holes in which ski bindings are mounted.

Craig Mathison, Scottish Polar Hero, and leader of The Polar Academy was trained in mounting and the use of the right glue.

Børge Ousland BC Very light and versatile mountain ski that fits in the track Børge Ousland BC is a very light and versatile ski that fits down cross country tracks. A ski with a solid steel edge (2.1x1.9 mm) and a very lightweight wooden core, which is equally suitable for long trips and expeditions with pulk, as for days in hard and icy ski tracks. Because we use same steel edge on our mountain skis as is used on most alpine skis, we can guarantee good edge control on all conditions and high-level durability. This ski has a prominent camber profile which stetches in the length of the ski and a distinctive wax pocket, something which makes for an excellent ski for trips where good glide is essential. This ski also comes with a sole that has good wax absorption, is very durable and grinded to work in Nordic conditions – perfect for long outings in Nordic and Polar snow conditions.

Ousland BC ski has a moderate side cut so that the ski is directional, but also turns easily on hard snow. A soft front tip with the Nordic Rocker (lifted tip) and Taper (secluded widest point on the tip) makes for a ski that handle difficult conditions in the mountains well and floats more easily. This ski has a light wooden core in poplar and paulownia, which gives a playful, solid ski with good camber and very low weight. Børge Ousland BC weighs only just over 800 grams per ski in 200 cm length - then there is none bordering on how long and long you can ski! The longitudinal stiffener and the construction of the Børge Ousland BC ski has good bearing capacity. This ski has been developed in close cooperation with the polar explorer, Børge Ousland, known as one of the most reputable adventures in modern polar history. Børge Ousland was the first man to reach the North Pole without supplies and support in 1990 together with Erling Kagge. In 1994 he went alone to the North Pole and on to Kapp Arkichevsky in Russia, the first in the world, and in 1996/1997 he was the first in the world to cross in and out of the South Pole without supplies, which also was the fastest entry into the South Pole in just 34 days. Since then, Børge Ousland has been at the North Pole during the winter and made several remarkable expeditions before in later years have lived of lectures, as an expedition organizer and on the island Manshausen in Steigen. We are proud to be able to work with Børge Ousland and we look forward to further cooperation and think it is great that we can benefit from his stories and advice.

Otto Sverdrup BC All-round ski for use in the backcountry and varied terrain Otto Sverdrup BC is perhaps one the most versatile Nordic BC skis, for use in the backcountry, in our range. This ski has a more prominent camber and wax-pocket than most of our other all-around bc skis, good sidecut, and modern technology. The modern shape with taper and rocker tip lifts the ski easily out of the snow, meaning that the ski does not hook so easily and makes it easier to set up the turn compared to more traditional designed skis. This also means that you get a ski that handles most terrain and is experienced more playful and forgiving when conditions are demanding. Otto Sverdrup BC has a good amount of camber, and a prominent wax pocket, that makes the ski suitable for slightly longer trips, and perhaps especially in varying and hilly terrain. The effective camber and stiffness make for a ski that will be fairly XC effective, and the forgiving tips and the sidecuts also give the ski a good amount of playfulness. All in all, a very good compromise for an all-around nordic bc ski. This is simply a modern twist on a good classic mountain ski, which will suit most mountain lovers!

If you want to get the most out of Åsnes’ short-skin system, we recommend using the right skin, either X-skin 45mm Mohair for cold conditions / moderate terrain, or X-skin 45mm Nylon for wet conditions / steep terrain. Otto Sverdrup (1854 - 1930) joined Nansen on skis over Greenland and was captain of the ship ”Fram” during the first Fram expedition. He even led the second Fram expedition in the years 1898-1902. Otto Neumann Knoph Sverdrup is considered ”one of the big three” in Norwegian polar history, next to Nansen and Amundsen. A name that has not received enough attention in the shadows of the other two. The expeditions led by Otto Sverdrup collected a huge amount of research material. This resulted in 39 dissertations from 34 researchers who participated in the processing of the material. Sverdrup’s expeditions also laid out the groundwork for maps used by Canadian authorities right up to the 1960s. Among the areas which were mapped were three islands that were named after the expedition’s sponsors. The island was later commonly noticed as Sverdrupøyene (the sverdrup islands) and is today a part of the archipelago Queen Elizabeth Islands in the Nunavut Territory. Otto Sverdrup received a long line of awards throughout his life, i.a. gold medals from Det Norwegian Geographical Society (1889), Royal Geographical Society (1903), and a number of other geographical societies, and he was an honorary member of several. He was appointed Commander of the 1st Class of the Order of St. Olav after the 1st Fram Expedition in 1896 and received the Grand Cross after the 2nd Expedition.

Line Victoria Sverdrup is a city girl who has chosen to live out her outdoor dream. As a direct descendant and relative of polar explorer Otto Sverdrup (1854 -1930) Line Victoria has a heart full of adventure, love for polar dogs and Norwegian nature. As her early relative, Otto Sverdrup, Line Victoria fell in love with nature early on when she was pulled as a child the sled behind the family’s three Greenland dogs at the cabin in Valdres. And since then dogs, dog sledding, hunting, and the outdoors have been a big part of her life. For Line Victoria, the A4-life has never been particularly inviting. The career pursuit and focus you often find in the city and in the ”finer” parts of Oslo Oslo did not appeal. Line Victoria has many passions. Everything from hunting and fishing to dog sledding and hiking. In addition, she works as a freelance journalist. Line Victoria is also very concerned with nature conservation. Her goal with sharing the outdoor-life on social media is to get as many people as possible to appreciate the outdoors more, live on/of less, and experience more. She believes that the best way to get people to understand how important nature and wildlife are to the earth is to show them. We are proud to have Line Victoria in our small family here in Åsnes, and we look forward to following her further and are enthusiastic that a new generation of adventurers can spread the adventurous spirit and joy for the outdoors like Otto Sverdrup once stood for.

Ingstad BC The perfect ski for steeper terrain, deeper snow and demanding descents

suggested skin width 45/58 mm

The Ingstad BC is a modern back country ski with a generous sidecut, built for speed and agile turns. An ideal ski for demanding descents and extended traverses across flat terrain alike, its versatility comes from a moderate wax pocket, a pronounced Nordic rocker, and a tapered tip: it is stable, willing to turn, and easy to handle in deep snow and demanding terrain. Ingstad BC skis are equipped with Skinlock, ready for a climbing skin to be attached in an instant for climbing. For this ski, we recommend a 58 mm X-Skin in nylon for wet and steep terrain or a narrower mohair skin (45 mm) for cold temperatures and flat terrain. Helge Ingstad, once Governor of Greenland and Svalbard, was known as a trapper, polar hero, and scientist. He published several best-sellers about hunting in Canada, Greenland and Svalbard. Through this work he contributed to the creation to the heroic representations of the hunter’s adventurous life. Ingstad was also a researcher with a particular interest in the history and ethnography of the Arctic who contributed to our knowledge of the cultures of polar societies and the Norse settlements of North America.

Today she lives as a trapper in the deep forests of Canada, making use of her skis daily. She is the winner of the Årets Villmarking award of 2016, previously won by the likes of Lars Monsen and Cecilie Skog. We look forward to following Tonje on new adventures.

BC Explore New times await. With the introduction of the new Rottefella Xplore binding, you finally have a good fixation that can bring out the full potential in our wider nordic bc skis (”hybrids”). This concept opens for a whole new perspective on the ”hybrid ski”, as a marked and segment between the classic mountain skis and Alpine touring skis.

Easy to step into and out off the binding

Button to release flex/ anti-ice plate Avoid snowpacking

This is really a concept which to an even greater extent will give opportunities to explore the mountains, and which guarantees proper fun!

Better mobility when walking

The Xplore system redefines alpine touring, ski tours, and the nordic bc ski market, by opening up for more playful and progressive skiing. The binding and the bending point in the sole allow you to ski naturally and effectively so that you can travel longer distances, climb with less effort, and improved grip under your skis.

Shoes providing comfort, stability and mobility

Heel lift for more comfortable walking upwards in steep terrain

The torsional stiffness you get through the combination of binding and shoes, as well as increased ankle support, make you a better and more confident skier. The stability of the binding and the boots will make it possible to ski more aggressively and more and demanding descents.

BC Explore The soles of the shoes are designed to be comfortable walking with, so one gets a flexible solution for both hiking and skiing in the snow, as well as when traveling to - and from the mountains. The Xplore system is specially designed for better stability and better downhill performance than the BC system has offered so far - without the expense of comfort when skiing.

More stability

Anti-skid sole

The further development of shoes, replaceable parts and accessories to the system make for a very flexible system, which to a large extent can be adapted to a wide range of usage and preferences. In Åsnes we have of course had a close dialogue with Rottefella, Alfa, and Alpina. We have therefore already had skis which are perfect in combination with this new system. We also have updated some ski models to work even better in this combination.

Replace the flex with an anti-ice plate for comfortable walking upwards

We have been so to have betatested and given feedback on the binding, and are safe when we say that this is one of the greatest developments for Nordic BC skiing in a long time. Of course, we will closely follow the development and give our feedback also in the future.

How do you pick your line down the mountain? Our advice: let the Fjøro 92 skis help you choose. They’re really good at it. The playful taper and rocker on these skis is designed to offer a superb float on powder snow – the kind of support you could only find on wider skis before. And there are advantages to skis as short as 92 mm under your boots. Holding an edge is much easier, for a start – a definite asset on hardpack when close contact between foot and steel edge is crucial. Edge control when turning at speed is further improved by the Fjøro 92’s crosshatched carbon reinforcement. Fjøro 92 skis are light underfoot, stable on the steel edge, and simply amazing fun in the powder. Apologies in advance if this contributes to over-enthusiastic shouting and wild fist pumps when you’re shooting through the powder forest. Voss Z’N is the ski a modern and offensive skier would choose. A ski that works for freeride skiing, playful skiing in the powder as well as alpine touring. With a waist of 106 mm below the foot, generous Rocker and Taper tips, one gets a ski that can handle all what the mountain has to deliver. With a solid construction and medium turning radius, this is a ski which will enjoy both speed and big mountain turns. It is very responsive and feels quick on the edge. Voss Z’N is safe, stable and playful ski. Voss Z’N is named after the legendary lin at Voss, which is called Z’N by the freeride community. This is a line that offers both deep forest snow and steep, exposed runs. Together with the freeridie community, enthusiasts and ski guides at Voss, we have developed the optimal ski for a modern freeride skier. If one only need a one-quiver ski, this means that the ski must be light enough to go alpine touring, could be ridden at high speed in varying snowpack, be playful and function on the days you want to carve with the family in the groomers. That makes for the Voss Z’N!

Åsnes has a long history with waxless skis Since the early ’70s, Åsnes have developed waxless patterns and technology to produce skis with these ”shell patterns”. For a longer period, Åsnes held important patents, and still, today continues to further develop and better waxless patterns, in line with the development of new technology and the new possibilities. Our waxless pattern and our waxless skis come in combination with a finetuned camber and ”pocket” and a ”fish shell pattern” developed by us to function in various snow conditions. A good camber, a ski that bears loads, and a solution that will grip on regular winter snow make waxless skis appealing to many. All our Waxless skis come with our integrated skinlock (R)(TM) so that one can use our X-Skin(R) short skins in combination with the waxless sole. This makes for a good, simple, and reliable combination. Perfect for anyone wanting simplicity and avoid grip wax, klister, and sticky stuff.

X-SKIN is next generation short skins. The SKIN PROTECTOR makes for less friction and better gliding properties, as well as function as a protection against icing and abrasion on the skins. For more than 20 years Åsnes has delivered skis with skinlocks for short skins and kicker skins. Our solution has proved to be superior in terms of quality and characteristics on countless expeditions. We are proud to introduce the next generation short skins, which is based on the same quality and innovation as always. Our new X-Skins has the same protection in the front as before, but the height of the Skin Protector has been reduced and the Protector further developed for much less friction. The SKIN PROTECTOR is a solid plate facing against the snow, making for optimal protection and with metal arms for swift mounting. The new X-Skins fits all previous Åsnes skis, no worries!

X - S K I N

Mohair Best suited for those who want optimal glide and a good grip. The Mohair material is developed to function perfect on colder conditions and in powder snow. Mohair glides a lot better than Nylon, but will have less durability.

Better glide

Nylon Nylon is a material that is best suited for long expeditions and mechanical wear. The Nylon skins are good for wet conditions, and crust. They do not glide as good, but they are were durable and the nature of the syntetic fibres does not absorb as much moist.

More durability

Mix The mix skins are, as the name can tell us, as mix of 70%mohair and 30% nylon. It is a good compromise between durability, grip and glide. The mix skins capabilities to withstand abrasion, mechanical damage and the waterproof membrane from Pomoca, makes this for a really good all-round option, even on wet days.

A good blend

This skin is really versatile, and will fit most skiers, from beginners to more advanced users. For even better performance, we reccomend proofing or waxing the skins. This will not only make them glide better, but also make them more durable and prevents ice -and snow build up. X - S K I N

Colltex Drybase COLLTEX DRYBASE Waterproofed membrane backing New ways to coat your ski skins The back of the ski skins is a fabric made of cotton and synthetics. The back of all Colltex skins is now additionally treated with a special coating. Only then, the proven hotmelt resin adhesive is applied. This additional coat called Colltex Drybase has the following advantages:

DRY

> Hardly any water absorption: the hollow spaces in the fabric are filled by Colltex Drybase. Thanks to this sealing, hardly any water can penetrate into the fabric back. The ski skin will remain dry and light even in warm snow conditions. > Chemical bond: the Colltex Drybase coating creates an optimum chemical bond to the hotmelt resin adhesive. The hotmelt thus adheres in an optimum manner to the back of the ski skin. This renders tearing off the adhesive very unlikely. > More durable: the Colltex Drybase coating makes the back of the ski skin more resistant to torsion, stronger and more durable – without losing its suppleness. The few grams extra of coating are compensated several time over as the ski skin hardly absorbs any water.

DRY

Colltex Mix CombiFix-feste This long nordic bc-skin from Colltex is produced in a mix of 65% Mohair and 35% Nylon for optimal glide, grip, and durability. Colltex Skin Sock Nylon The pro-skin sock made of high-quality synthetic is used to protect the adhesive layer of the ski skin. It is the alternative to the classic protective net. Furthermore, the ski skin does not twist in the wind and it is avoided that one adhesive layer sticks to another. To dry the ski skin, remove it from the sock and pack it back in a dry state.
