The studio was based on working with rigid and flexible material.

Initially we were asked to work on a cube or trapezium made out of rigid and flexible material. We then had to develop a module as per our understanding. It demanded us to work on the junctions of modules and its strength.

The module which we worked on, were then used to create spaces through repetition.

This program was to design a workshop. The material used were steel and tension cables.

The studio focused on architectural spaces which have the potential to become places. The role of socio-cultural aspects as determinants of such architecture was to be studied.

The studio began with developing an understanding about culture and its vast network of component by making mindmaps and collages. With this understanding we were taken to Pushkar, where we documented the place, through general observation, measure drawing, photographs, sketching and conversation with the locals.

Pushkar was selected as as site because of its permanent ephemerality. It possesses a strong sense of ownership and belongings among its resident.

The site was chosen for the intervention is a chunk of land in the middle of the urban fabric which is not directly on the edge of the lake but leads to the lake.

The aim was to design a yoga institute adjacent to the ghats.

We proceed by making block models to understand the mass and voids. The block model also helped us in creating our spaces and the type of spaces.

The main objective was to create a space which responded to the surroundings. First to understand what all does the program requires and then in correspondence of the site , form it.

The narrow street and ghats emerging towards the lake is what describes Pushkar. Documenting different ghats and the people around help us to develop an idea on the surrounding. It furthermore helped in understanding the context and designing of the yoga institute.

Site Analysis

HOUSING STUDIO

We used the whole to part approach. We first designed the whole system and services of 25 houses and then after designing the whole cluster we worked on a unit.

The aim of this studio was to design a housing community for 25 families. The families consisted of archaelogists and caretakers who worked at the museum in Lothal, Gujarat. The challenge was that no electricity was provided by the government and we had to produce our own energy using renewable sources.

To produce our own energy, we had to design the housing cluster in a way to cut off maximum heat gain. The site area provided to us was vast, so to cut off heat gain I created a micro climate by using passive cooling techiniques.

While working on the drawings and models simultaneously I then achieved a cluster which would minimalise the heat gain and had a good ventilation. Some of the ideas for passive cooling techniques were taken from Pol houses of Ahmedabad and the surrounding house forms in Lothal.

The main challenge for me was to create a cluster which had mutual shading and a good connectivity . Solar panels are used to generate electricity to the whole site. All the houses were placed close to cut off the service expenses.

This program was based upon developing facades , spaces , connectivity , orientation and activities. Initially we started with a simple exercise of making a cube with dimensions 150mmx150mmx150mm and then creating spaces in them (semi open , closed and enclosed spaces) .

Abstract model of the exhibition space.

Using our abstract models, we further translated the process into an exhibition space. We added activities to all the spaces, keeping in mind the construction method and the basic anthropometry.

In this studio, we achieved our design by following a process.

We added layers to the cube one by one to have a clarity upon each layer. The layers helped us understand how the openings, orientation and the intermediate spaces play an important role in making a space.

MANUAL SKILLS

TIMBER JOINERIES In this exercise we had to work on timber joineries. We started by making a few mock models of our joineries to understand the junctions and then work with real materials. While working with timber we understood its properties and how the directions of the grains is important while working with timber. During this process we were introduced to different tools which were used for cutting and finishing of timber.

The main objective of this exercise was to study how different materials come up together and make up a single unit. We started with understanding how the object worked and what role did every member in the unit played.

CLIMATE RESPONSIVE The objective of this exercise was to design a space which used minimal energy and water provided by the government. Passive cooling techniques were used to cut off heat gain and methods like rain water harvesting and solar cells were introduced.

The second phase was to undestand the importance of daylight factor in designing of a space and implement it into our next model.

RELATED STUDY PROGRAM , KUTCH The main aim of this RSP was to document and measure draw clusters of bhunga in a village named Hodka , Kutch. We even documented the different activities that happen throughout the day and studied the concept of bhungas as they were constructed by the member of the village itself.

NARRATIVES OF LADAKH Faculty - Bhanupratap S. , Debashish B.

Ladakh is known for its silk route since hundred of years; located at the high Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir. The people over there are rooted to their culture and connected to the place.

The summer program aimed at documenting the tangible and intangible heritage in Leh and Kargil. We focused on the influence of climate, material and culture on the spatial configuration of the region.

EAST COAST NARRATIVES Faculty - Priyanka K., Manisha S., Maniyarasan R.

Rameswaram and Madurai are known to have religious importance for decades ; located at the southern end of India in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The main aim of the winter program was to study and analyse the character of the street. For documentation, the mediums that we worked with were photography, sketching and narratives.

We documented the activities and settlements of Hundarman , a village located 7 kms from Kargil.

We interacted with the locals over there to know about their way of living which made it easier to understand the settlement.

Pamban A Connection to Rameswaram

The temple was designed in such a way that the opimion of people varies according to thair experience.

Taking the holy bath, I came out of sea and went towards the temple. Walking towards, I entered into a narrow lane and finally the yellow Gopuram was insight. I was surrounded by lot of people murmuring chants, families, and tourists. I could see vendors selling puja thalis and coconuts. Bhavanans and small temples also came in sight slowly.

Rameswaram has been the center of attraction for tourists and devotees alike for centuries. Rameswaram is a small town located on the Pamban Island, separated from mainland India by Palk Strait. Thousands of devotees and traders crossed this fiery sea with the use of ferries and boats until early 19th century. It was in the late 1870s that the East India Company decided to broaden its trade prospects with Sri Lanka by stitching the strait through a railway bridge. With more introspection and a co-ordinated team of engineers and contractors, the Pamban Railway Bridge construction was started in full swing in 1911. It took 3 years of relentless efforts to finally open the bridge to traffic in 1914.
