GATESHEAD YESHIVAH JUBILEE 5690 5740 HIS YEAR, 5740 (November, 1979) marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Gateshead Yeshivah, currently — no doubt — the most important and renowned institution of higher Torah study in Europe. This jubilee is an occasion giving deep satisfaction, great joy and profound spiritual elevation, not only to its many Talmidim, past and present, but to the whole of Anglo-Jewry. It is also — as, indeed, it should be, an occasion for jubilation, as well as pride, to Anglo-Jewry. Thanks to a small group of people with foresight, zeal and tremendous enthusiasm, who were responsible for its original establishment, the Yeshiva has grown from small beginnings into a formidable spiritual power-house, which illuminates, enriches and enlightens thousands of Jewish homes within our respective communities. During the past 50 years, this great academy of Torah learning has produced hundreds of great Talmudic scholars, to be found in almost all continents, as well as thousands of learned, scholarly, G-d-fearing baalei batim, who have, in turn, changed the face of Anglo-Jewry, exercising a considerable influence on the quality of the religious and spiritual life of our communities in this island, as well as beyond it. Its world-famous Roshei Hayeshivah and spiritual

guides and mentors, themselves products of the great Yeshivot of pre-war Eastern Europe, have succeeded in implanting into the souls, hearts and minds of their Talmidim a love for learning, a thirst for knowledge, a burning desire to acquaint and familiarise themselves with the great treasures of the Torah — a Torah so vast and deep, so comprehensive and all-embracing that even were any man to live a thousand years, he would not be able to reach even its fringes. Gateshead has created a climate within our midst where young boys are prepared to defer their university studies for several years and devote themselves to Torah study, to drink from its living waters and thus equip themselves with the protective spiritual armoury of Torah and Yirat Shamayim, so that, later on, they should be able to face lite secure and safe from the damaging and dangerous influences of the current trends in the non-Torah world. One need not be a great historian to realise and appreciate the importance of Yeshivot to our very existence, and the vital role they played in the past and still play, in the lite ot our people. Our rabbis in the Talmud always speak of Batei Knesset and Batei Midrash — houses of prayer and houses of study — for only these two institutions, when together, are the safe and sure guarantee, the best insurance policy, for our spiritual survival.
