Career Day 2022

These members of the Class of 2022 have excelled in and out of the classroom. They are outstandingrepresentativesof our school and we are proud to welcome them to our Bulldog Alumni Community.

Karen Carreño ‘22 is a Class of 2022 Honor Graduate and was awarded a full-ride For Utah Scholarship to the University of Utah. She was one of the co-founders of this year’s new LatinX Club in addition to serving as a Peer Minister. Karen received the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross Award for Most Inspirational Participant in Activities for Literary Magazine, Dance, and the LatinX Club. She came to Judge Memorial from St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.

“Judge has opened the door to many opportunities I never thought I would get. Judge has allowed me to grow academically and sociallyto become the best version of myself. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a Peer Minister, President of LatinX, Dance Company Vice President, and a recipient of the For U Scholarship.”

Arual Deng ‘22 is also a Honor Graduate for the Class of 2022. This year, she has served on the Student Council Senior Core and was president of the Black Student Union. Arual received the Linda Simpson “Bulldog of the Year” Award for Outstanding Dedication in Extra-Curricular Activities and the Vicar General of the Diocese of Salt Lake City Award for Most Outstanding Participant in Activities for the Black Student Union. She was also a recipient of the Blessed Oscar Romero Scholarship Award. Arual attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School before coming to Judge Memorial. In the fall, she will be attending University of Utah.

“Attending Judge Memorial has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge, build long lasting connections, and find my voice. Being a Black Woman here, I thought my voice would be overshadowed, but I was able to have my voice heard and change the dynamic of this school. I can proudly say that Judge Memorial has helped shape me into the woman I am today and has given me the drive to begin to change the world.”

Katherine (Katie) Evans ‘22 is the recipient of a full-ride, four-year QuestBridge scholarship to Wesleyan University for her academic excellence, strong writing ability, intellectual spark and determination. She earned First Honors being one of the top 10 in her class academically. Katie has been on Student Council the last three years and served as the Student Body Secretary this year. She received the Vicar General of the Diocese of Salt Lake City Award for Most Outstanding Participant in Activities for Club Interact where she served as president. Katie was also awarded the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for donating over 250 hours of service for the community. She came to Judge Memorial from St. Olaf Catholic School.

“Attending Judge is the best decision that I could’ve made. The guidance of my supporting teachers, amazing counselors, and involved admin made my dream of doing well in school and attending a top university a reality. My peers, too, have inspired me to be a better student, a stronger leader, and a more involved citizen.”

Kurt McLaughlin ‘22 is the Class of 2022 Salutatorian, is one of three seniors to earn an AP Capstone Diploma this year. He has been on Student Council all four years while at Judge including being Student Body President this year. Kurt earned the Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City Award for Outstanding Scholar Participant in Activities. He also received the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross Award for Most Inspirational Participant in Activities for his work as president of the ALLIES Club. In addition, Kurt was awarded the Vicar General of the Diocese of the Salt Lake City Award for Most Outstanding Participant in Activities for both Student Council and ALLIES Club. He was also awarded the Bronze Presidential Volunteer Service Award for donating at least 100 hours of service for the community. Kurt attended J.E. Cosgriff Catholic School before coming to Judge Memorial and will be attending Columbia University this fall.

“Coming to Judge, I was terrified I wouldn’t make any friends. My fears, however, were quickly quelled as I was enveloped in the instant family Judge provides. Every day I come to school, I feel safe to be myself and supported by the people around me. Even on my down days, walking through the halls and saying hi to the people I love never ceases to raise my spirits and keeps pushing me forward. I know that I would not have been able to become the person I am today without my Judge community.”

Michael Silas ‘22 is Valedictorian for the Class of 2022 and a National Merit Scholar. He also was the male recipient of this year’s Christ the King Award which is the highest award the school bestows on seniors recognizing them for outstanding dedication and zeal to the service of God and School. In addition, he earned the Academic Award for Excellence in both AP Calculas and Science plus the St. Ann’s Parish Academic Award for Excellence in Social Studies. He will be attending Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall.

“Judge has meant so much to me over the past four years. From Judge’s rigorous course offerings to the numerous personal relationships I’ve formed with my dedicated and passionate teachers, I’m confident Judge has prepared me exceptionally well for a career in STEM in college and beyond. In addition, the countless social experiences I’ve had at Judge have truly given me amazing memories and rich friendships, and for that I am deeply grateful.”
