SCHOOL NEWS Class of 2021 Spotlight
These members of the Class of 2021 have excelled in and out of the classroom. They have been great representatives of our school for the past four years and we are proud to welcome them to our Bulldog Alumni Community.
Ashley Cluff is the Class of 2021 Valedictorian. She came to Judge Memorial as a graduate of St. Olaf Catholic School. During Ashley’s four years at Judge she received academic awards in social studies, AP calculus, and science. This year Ashley received the Academic Award for Excellence in Mathematics for both AP Calculus and AP Statistics, and the St. Ann’s Parish Academic Award for Excellence in Social Studies. She earned Academic All-State Athlete honors as a member of the Girls’ Tennis team. Ashley also participated in swimming, track, and softball. For her Christian Service Hours, Ashley volunteered at Lakeview Hospital where she greeted people at the front desk and gave directions. She is a recipient of the Blessed Oscar Romero Scholarship for her strong spiritual direction, a deep interest in eradicating social injustice and poverty, and a belief that education leads to a brighter future. Ashley’s twin brother Gage also graduates this year from Judge Memorial. She is going to attend Johns Hopkins University in the fall.
“Judge has provided me with immeasurable support as I worked toward achieving my goal of becoming a doctor. The rigor of the classes has ensured that I will be able to succeed throughout my college career and any future endeavors I may have. The Judge community has also provided me with connections that will last for years to come.” Lauren Cook is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2021. She graduated from J. E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School before coming to Judge Memorial. Lauren has received academic awards in science, and AP Government and Comparative Politics. She also participated in girls’ basketball and track. For Lauren’s Christian Service Hours, she volunteered at Primary Children’s Hospital in the Kids Crew playroom where she led the kids in crafts and games. Lauren also volunteered as the assistant volleyball coach for the seventh and eighth graders at J.E. Cosgriff Memorial. She plans to attend the University of Utah in the fall.

The dedication of the faculty and staff sets each and every student up for success academically, while providing the most welcoming and supportive environment. I am so thankful for the education I have received and I cannot wait to take all that I’ve learned into my next stages of life!”
Nyayeek Deng is a recipient of a scholarship from the University of Utah Eccles School of Business First Ascent Scholars program that is given to students who demonstrate leadership and strength in their communities. She came to Judge Memorial as a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. Nyayeek received the Vicar General of the Diocese Award for the Most Outstanding Participant
in the Black Student Union in which is president and been heavily involved since it started in 2018. This year she was a member of the Girls Tennis team and a Student Body Officer over activities where she assisting in planning pep rallies (both virtual and in-person) and the prom. Nyayeek also participated in girls basketball and track. For her Christian Service Hours, Nyayeek volunteered for the South Sudanese Community Association creating and delivering self-care kits to refugees throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Her sister Akout Maluai graduated from Judge Memorial in 2018 and her younger sister Adeel will be a junior next year.
“Judge taught me that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success. All you have to do is believe in yourself, and you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Mark Monette is a National Merit Scholar and honor graduate for the Class of 2021. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School before coming to Judge Memorial. This year, Mark received the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross Most Inspirational Participant for the Junior Classical League and the Vicar General of the Diocese Award for Most Outstanding Participant in Debate. He has been a member of the Boys’ Tennis team for the last three years. For Mark’s Christian Service Hours, he volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center helping patients in wheelchairs and moving samples between labs. When volunteering there wasn’t possible this year due to COVID, Mark volunteered at the Stagl Organics Farm. His brother John Alcide also attends Judge Memorial and will graduate next year. Mark will be attending Loyola University Chicago in the fall.

“I benefited from Judge’s welcoming and supportive community. Through a challenging curriculum and excellent teachers, Judge has prepared me to succeed in college and beyond.” Emmanuel Okongo is our second recipient of the University of Utah Eccles School of Business First Ascent Scholars program scholarship given to students who demonstrate leadership and strength in their communities. This year he was part of the Student Council as a member of the Senior Core. Emmanuel has also been a member of the Boys Soccer Team for the last three years. For his Christian Service Hours, Emmanuel spent his Saturdays acting as a food bank for his community where he would gather and then distribute food to those experiencing difficult times during the pandemic. Emmanuel’s brother Fredrick graduated from Judge Memorial in 2018 and his sister Mary will be a sophomore next year.
“Attending Judge has meant a lot to me because it helped me prepare myself for what I want to achieve in the future. By providing me with the tools and communication skills I use for the rest of my life.”
