Celebrating Judge’s First Century

1920s

1921 Judge Memorial was established at the old Judge Mercy Hospital, when Catholic Grammar School and Cathedral High School were combined under the direction of The Right Rev. Glass, 2nd Bishop of Salt Lake City.

1925 First graduating class includes 10 students

Among those is Robert Dwyer, first native Utahn ordained as a priest in the Salt Lake Diocese. He went on to be a parish pastor and then took charge of the Cathedral in 1946.

1929 School renamed after John & Mary Judge, a gererous mining family who donated the Judge Mercy Hospital building to the Salt Lake Diocese.

1927 First female student leader elected, Emma Anselmo ‘27

1910-1918 Judge Mercy Hospital opens in 1910 under the direction of the Sisters of Mercy for miners suffering from black lung. Although it closed in 1915, it was used to house the victims of the 1918 flu epidemic.

The Right Rev. Mitty becomes 3rd Bishop of Salt Lake City

Judge placed under patronage of Christ the King

1937 Students deliver a bronze plaque to Jordan High School to express the condolences after a bustrain accident killed 24 Jordan students

Most Rev. Kearney becomes 4th Bishop of Salt Lake City

Music offerings are expanded with a band and orchestra

1937

The Right Rev. Hunt becomes 5th Bishop of Salt Lake City

1939

Two alumni pass the Utah State Bar, prompting a school official to say: “Judge Memorial makes no idle claims to superior scholarship, but stands on her record”

1940 13 graduates for the Class of 1940

Judge is accredited by the Northwest Association

1943

$10,000 fundraising campaign begins to bring athletic field to regulation length and cover with turf

1948 First football state championship led by Coach Moran

Sketches for a new athletic field are shown

Students put out first yearbook, The Basilean

World War II

1944 First of eight Judge alumni is lost in World War II

1948 Plans for first Catholic grade school are revealed (Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School) which will change Judge to a high school

1951 Two Spanish- American students serve as football team co-captains and another becomes Homecoming Queen

1954 Gymnasium completed and dedicated

1958 First baseball state championship

1953 The Judgeonian newspaper made its debut, a four-page edition. The paper retained that name until a 1980 student vote changed it to the Bulldog Press

1956

Sister Mary Leo Anthony named first female Judge Principal

1959 “Million dollar” campaign begins for the construction of a new school building

Chapel is added to the school

1960 Construction completed on the new Judge school building

Some classes divided into girls & boys sections. Girls entered classrooms on one side of the hall, boys on the other.

1964 Female students move to the all girls school, St. Mary of the Wasatch and Judge becomes an all boys school

1966

Original Judge Mercy Hospital structure is taken down

1961

Oblates of St. Francis de Sales become adminstrators of the school

1965 Gil Cordova ‘56 starts as football coach and Jim Yerkovich ‘61 as basketball coach

1967

Two Judge alumni die in the Vietnam War

The Most Rev. Federal becomes 6th Bishop of Salt Lake City

1963

President Kennedy is shot and killed

2003 One of a few high schools in the U.S. allowed to stage a “school edition” of “Les Miserables”

2005 Club Interact first high school group to be awarded a Rotary Club charter membership

State title at the National Mock Trial Championships
