Welcome to Juddmonte’s 43rd Stallion brochure where Simon Mockridge and Garrett O’Rourke will report on another outstanding year for Juddmonte’s seven world class stallions. We have performed equally well on the track throughout the year the highlight being Bluestocking’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win, Juddmonte’s seventh Arc. Under the direction of the family, we maintain our exceptional track record in producing top-class homebred racehorses competing both for ourselves and others at the highest level. The family’s support of the business and active involvement in all important decisions affecting Juddmonte, be it racing targets, allocations to trainers, matings, stallion fees, sales and purchases has been the key factor in our continued success.
Continuity remains at the heart of how we run our business and evolve our strategy. As is well known, this strategy is built on a consistent focus on the quality of our broodmare band, a willingness to invest and a preparedness to take a long-term view. That is the legacy the family wishes to preserve, and we are all very proud of Prince Khalid’s induction into the British Champion Series Hall of Fame in August last year. In January next year, we will have approximately 200 broodmares across our farms in the UK, Ireland and the USA.
In recent years our strategy has evolved, with an increased desire to purchase new bloodstock, especially new blood into our fabled broodmare band. We believe that this, coupled with the traditional Juddmonte systems and structures, has been a significant factor in our performance on racetracks across the world. From the start, about one-third of Juddmonte’s operations have been in the USA and the strike rate of over 30% this year from some 130 starts has included Laurel River’s unchallenged win of the Dubai World Cup, Idiomatic’s continuing haul of Grade 1 races and a host of other stakes’ wins. In Europe, the strike rate has been similar with the twoyear-olds shining.
On behalf of the family, I would like to pay tribute to our outstanding staff. Their experience and knowledge are the foundation of the continuity that we believe is such an important factor in achieving performance in a high-quality breeding business and they deserve all the accolades that are directed towards them. They are led by Garrett O’Rourke in the USA (31 years with Juddmonte), Simon Mockridge in Newmarket (43 years) and Barry Mahon (just 7 years but born and bred in Juddmonte) and his father Rory Mahon (42 years) in Ireland. Over a quarter of the staff have been with Juddmonte for more than 25 years providing essential stability.
A special mention and thank you must go to our excellent trainers, first and foremost Sir Michael Stoute who retires this year after an exemplary career, supported by Andrew Balding, Ralph Beckett, Harry Charlton, John and Thady Gosden in England, Ger Lyons and Dermot Weld in Ireland, Henri-François Devin, Andre Fabre and Francis-Henri Graffard in France, Bhupat Seemar in Dubai and Bob Baffert, Chad Brown, Brad Cox, Michael McCarthy and Bill Mott in the USA.
The biggest thank you is to you our breeders, clients and friends, for your continuing support in helping to make Juddmonte what it is today and will continue to be.
Douglas Erskine Crum CEO JUDDMONTE
Juddmonte’s stallion roster led by Frankel is designed to provide breeders with choice across all distances and on both turf and dirt.
Our fresh recruit for the 2024 season, CHALDEAN got off to an excellent start covering 173 mares in the Northern Hemisphere. Of his first book of mares, 99 are blacktype performers or producers and he covered more Group winners, stakes winners and blacktype performers than all other first season sires in GB and Ireland. His impressive physique, precocity, and Classic credentials attracted many of the most astute commercial breeders in the business.
Following on from his Champion Sire title in 2021 and 2023, phenomenal FRANKEL amassed 24 individual blacktype winners in 2024 of which 15 are Group winners, including exciting Breeders’ Cup winner Lake Victoria – Timeform’s highest-rated two-year-old filly, Bedtime Story, and Exactly. Across all European yearling sales, he is the leading sire by average as well as siring the highest-priced yearling of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and topping Tattersalls October and Goffs Orby Yearling Sales. Frankel has, in fact, sired the sales topper at Tattersalls Book 1 in all the last three seasons.
A global sire in demand, KINGMAN enjoyed another extraordinary season consolidating his position as one of the Northern Hemisphere’s elite sires with two new Classic winners – Elmalka (1000 Guineas) and Sparkling Plenty (Prix de Diane) and a further Prix de l’Opéra winner in Friendly Soul. He sired 18 individual stakes winners and 11 Group winners and is joint leading sire by Northern Hemisphere-bred Group 1-winning three-year-olds with Justify and Galileo (3).
OASIS DREAM, a stallion with little to prove, concluded his 20th breeding season with an impressive 93% fertility. Of those stallions still active in Britain, only Dubawi and Frankel have sired more Gr.1 winners and Group winners. Adding yet another string to his bow, he is a highly regarded broodmare sire of over 180 blacktype performers with 59 of his daughters having produced Group winners including 15 Group 1 winners.
BATED BREATH continues to operate at an ever-reliable rate of 59% winners to runners with notable two-year-old winners such as Loch Tay, First Instinct and Hold A Dream to name but a few, who will continue to fly the flag in 2025. This consistency has again translated to the sales ring, achieving another year of multiple six-figure yearlings. Bated Breath offers the opportunity of big returns for the smaller breeder.
The dual Breeders’ Cup winner and Eclipse Champion Sprinter ELITE POWER excelled in his first season covering a book of 203 mares including 5 Champions, 16 Graded stakes winners and 49 stakes winners. 69% of his book are stakes performing or producing mares.
MANDALOUN continued to attract the very best of mares, with over 350 mares covered in first two books. Those first mares sold for up to 14x stud fee, and he has since covered the dams of 20+ Gr.1 performers.
