H U LT P R I Z E . O R G

HOW WILL YOU CHANGE THE WORLD WITH USD1 MILLION? The Hult Prize competition is a call to action for the world’s brightest minds to tackle the world’s most pressing issues.

Change tomorrow, today.

WELCOME

Dear Attendees, On behalf of our partners President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative, IXL Center, and Hult International Business School, thank you for attending the Regional Final of the 6th annual Hult Prize. The Hult Prize has grown to be a benchmark competition for social entrepreneurship. The aim of the Challenge is to identify and launch the most compelling solutions to the crippling issues faced by the billions in need at the bottom of the economic pyramid, by crowdsourcing innovative, disruptive, and catalytic ideas from student teams from all over the planet. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of participants and their academic institutions for making this year’s Challenge the most successful yet. A big thank you also goes to the judges, all of whom have given up their spare time to help the next generation of social innovators refine their ideas. Together you are a powerful network of people and resources that are on the forefront of positive change for humanity. We hope you enjoy today’s event and that you will be inspired by the solutions presented. We do believe that the Hult Prize can change the world and hope you will continue to support us as we look to implement the ideas generated.

Warm Regards,

Ahmad Ashkar CEO & Founder Hult Prize Foundation

Dr. Stephen Hodges President Hult International Business School

T H E H U LT P R I Z E

If you want to meet the world’s most promising young social entrepreneurs, look no further than the Hult Prize. Founded in 2009 by Hult International Business School graduate Ahmad Ashkar, today the Hult Prize is the world’s largest student competition and crowdsourcing platform for social good. In 2012, President Bill Clinton named the Hult Prize in a TIME Magazine article that highlighted the top five ideas changing the world. Each year, in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative and Hult International Business School, President Clinton challenges students around the world to develop innovative social enterprises that can transform lives. The goal? To tackle the world’s most pressing global issues, from poverty to affordable housing.

“1.4 MILLION HOURS SPENT ON THIS YEAR’S CHALLENGE BY THE N E X T G E N E R AT I O N O F S O C I A L ENTREPRENEURS WHO HAIL FROM OVER 130 COUNTRIES.”

Winners receive USD1 million in seed capital, as well as mentorship and advice from international business leaders to help launch their ideas. Regional contests are held each spring across five international cities of competition in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai, and Shanghai, culminating in a final competition and awards ceremony held in New York during the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting in the fall. Regional event winners are also invited to join a summer Hult Prize Accelerator Program and given a one-year membership to the CGI. The Hult Prize is made possible through the support of the Hult family, including Swedish entrepreneur Bertil Hult, founder of the world’s largest private education company, EF Education First, an affiliate of Hult International Business School.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

D e a r Fr i e n d s , We are living in an era where the opportunities and the challenges to improve the life of all people come hand in hand. Many enterprises around the globe are rising to meet these challenges by creating smart solutions that elevate the quality of human life. However, with rising population and scarce resources, we need to create innovative platforms that address these challenges and deliver more sustainable solutions. I believe that the Hult Prize Competition is one such inspiring platform that can deliver solutions to address some of our pressing challenges by utilizing the collective minds and efforts of some of the brightest, young, dynamic innovators from across the globe. In the past, we have tackled housing, energy, education, food security and healthcare challenges on a global level and the competition has yielded teams with powerful and transforming ideas. These teams managed to not only develop these ideas but also implement them in serving the greater good. This year, we have identified a topic important to our family and to our global progress. The early years of a child’s development are critical building blocks for future success. Governments, the private sector, and NGOs have been striving to reduce the cost of education and improve access; however these efforts are not delivering the desired results. Today, more than 100 million children under the age of six in developing countries fail to reach their potential in cognitive development. This has a significant effect on their life, their families, communities and nations in which they live. Mothers from informal urban settlements, all around the world, face the difficult decision each day to either pull out an older child from school to take care of their younger siblings, stay home with their children, or go to work to make a living and leave their children in formal or informal childcare centers. In each case, the healthy growth and development of these children is compromised due to untrained siblings, lack of stimulation, unsafe physical environments, and caregiver neglect. The 6th Annual Hult Prize challenge will ask teams to find new sustainable social enterprise approaches to promote and increase early childhood development and help the not so privileged children access their right to have quality education. In order to stem this crisis and alleviate the burden on those working to survive on just a few dollars a day, we must offer smart solutions that will drive down cost, motivate parents and create awareness about the importance of early childhood development. Social enterprises, which creatively combine the tools used by governments, NGOs, and the private sector, offer some of the most promising opportunities for innovation in these areas. Through the Hult Prize challenge, you will be part of the solution as you develop accessible and affordable programs capable of delivering quality early education to the millions of underprivileged children who desperately need to get education at the earliest ages in or near the world’s cities. Access to quality early education is every child’s birth right. As you work to create business plans that advance shared opportunity, shared responsibility, and shared prosperity, I encourage you to take the opportunity to learn from other companies and organizations that have made strides in this area. I commend all of you who choose to answer this important call and I look forward to seeing the many outstanding ideas the competition will produce.

Sincerely,

Bill Clinton 42nd President of United States of America

42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, at the 2014 Final of the Hult Prize.
