the discoverers

professor andre geim is a fellow of the Royal Society and Senior EPSRC Research. He was born in Russia and educated in Moscow with a PhD from the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Russian Academy of Sciences. Currently, he is director of Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology and chair of condensed matter physics.

Geim is known for originality and breadth of his research, including mesoscopic superconductivity, magnetic levitation and, the discovery of graphene, which gave him a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010.

sir konstantin sergeevich novoselov, born in 23 August 1974, is a Russo-British physicist, known for his works on graphene together with Andre Geim, which earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Novoselov is currently Langworthy professor of physics in themesoscopic physics research group at the University of Manchester and a Royal Society University Research Professor (he was previously a Royal Society University Reseach Fellow). Novoselov is also a recipient of a starting grant from the European Research Council.

graphene is a revolution in science, a discovery that will have great impact in the way we live; its possibilities are endless only limited by imagination. It´s one atom thin, It´s properties surpass by far the properties of other components, stronger than steel, harder than diamond and It´s the fourth most common element found in the universe. It´s sounds almost like science fiction or advanced technology out of this world, but is actually real and even better at reach.

But where does it come from? Just take a look at the tip of a pencil, that’s graphite, is exactly the same a diamond is made of, 100% carbon atoms. The big difference resides in the atomic arrangement of those atoms. Graphite is just stacks and stacks of carbon piled on top each other, but by separating one single sheet out of that chaos, you get graphene.

This was discovered by two scientists at the University of Manchester by Andre Greim and Konstantin Novoselov in 2010.

any fragment of graphite contains a big number of layers of graphene; the problem is the difficulty in getting a single sheet of it. Actually is pretty difficult to get a single sheet of any other element. But in this extremely thin portion of atoms is where the miraculous material is found, whit all its amazing properties.

Even harder than getting an atom thick sheet of carbon is to constantly produce It with the same quality and stability for mass production, and that’s where we are right now.

Bateries will last much longer and computers will become much faster with a bigger storage capacity and improved quality of resolution.

Nanotechnology will start to take It’s first big steps to become a reality. Graphene would allow the creation of complex circuits at the nano level thanks to It´s bidimensional nature and flexibility.

This would also mean that new medical procedures will be available in which nanobots would target specific tissues.

Solar cells would increase power and efficiency and would add flexibility, making them more profitable for the energy industry.

98% of planet’s earth water is salty, by using graphene based filters it would be possible to separate water from salt, thereby making sea water drinkable.
