SUBJECTIVE
JUAN JOSE PEREZ
selected works
I have always considered myself a collector of sorts. Falling in love with the small details people carry around. From person to person, these subjective quirks have shaped the way I not only approach design but life as a whole. To ask and to listen - carefully - how the world responds.

Empathetic and inquisitve.
LIFE IS SUBJECTIVE.

01 a house house
The brief of this assignment was to design a home for your favorite architect. I decided to design a house for Bjarke Ingles, the founder and principal of Bjarke Ingles Group; BIG for short. One of BIG’s design philosophies and my guiding concept for design was the term “hedonistic sustainability.” Creating sustainable design while enrich-ing the quality of life for an individual or group of people.

a bus stop
inspired by the transitonal nature of caterpillar to butterfly, the facade of this bus stop is activaded and morphs as one walks across or through it. the choice for a semi-porous facade is both symbolic and functional, responding to the curvature of the arc. the juxtapostion of the materials, concrete and glass, materilize the relationship of the caterpillar and buttefly, while the inside seating mimics the sacred geometry of a caterpillars section while in cocoon.
as a side note, our class was instructed to exclusively use rhinoceros modeling software inconjuction with it’s native plug-in, grasshopper.

trim shape is trimmed at ground plane to allow for stability

an urban design

“an ubran design” was a semester long project headed and advised by professor alpa newre. the goal of the assignment was to research, synthesize, and design an urban implemntation for an underrepresented community in the city of gainesville.
this design proposal seeks to empower and collectively celebrate the Hispanic population enriching the entire Gainesville community. The Hispanic community is not a monolith and therefore should be celebrated as a dynamic collective. With their increasing importance and hold in our country’s economic, social, and cultural stakes, the Hispanic community deserves a place of celebration. We feel that our project achieves this.
18% of the United States population is Hispanic and is projected to grow to 30% by the year 2050
Hispanic or Latin(x) refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race

92% of first generation Hispanics identify as Hispanic and decreases to 50% by the fourth generation
Hispanics hold a $1.3 trillion dollar purchasing power in the United States economy
+50% of the Hispanic population have less than a high school education

site
The site is approximately 1.3 acres and is parallel to SW 13th street
footprint
The base footprint is situated in the upper left portion of the site.

split & push
Splitting the building creates a harmonic relationship between parking lot and site while also pushing and cantilevering the building to both function as a shading structure and providing more space for ground circulation. Ultimately the geometry sets up the heart of the site being located in front of the building.
green space
Green space is situated throughout the site. An open field, planters and reinforced grass paving catalyze moments of private, semi-private, and public green spaces while also acting as stormwater infrastructure.

lift
It is lifted 2 floors above the ground. The bottom half is reserved for retail and restaurant space and the top half functioning as the space for offices, study spaces, and computer labs.
adaptability
It was important for us to create a space that was adaptable and transitional in nature. A structure that acts as an art wall, storage, and informal marketing space. A canopy structure is introduced near the south end of the path that both shades visitors in the open field at the same time creating an informal amphitheater.
curve curving the building promotes an intuitive left-to-right procession of the site

canopy
Following the same grid, trees are placed in a bosque on the entrance of the site creating an arriving identity for the site and providing shade for the informal market space. Harmonizing site location, green space and density of trees, the southern region of the site generates an area of the site for meditative gardens, meandering paths, and private spaces.

during the summer of 2022, i decided i want to get into the online shenanigans that are NFTs. knowing a little bit of 3D modeling, the following collection is a result of some of my favorite that i have made. thean ongoing study of form iteration, computational design, and virtual materiality.
