James Toland Vocal Arts was established to encourage and cultivate, through competition and education, the emerging talents of singers who aspire to a professional career in vocal performance, and to broaden the search for and exposure of new voices within the arts community. Achieving success as a vocalist in the performing arts world is a complex and challenging task. JTVA’s mission is to provide encouragement for singers early in their careers, offering the opportunity for further development, primarily through the annual vocal competition which provides exposure to expert judging, performance opportunities before a live audience, and monetary prizes.

Nurturing the dreams, talents and careers of emerging vocal artists since 2014
It is with great joy and excitement that I extend a warm welcome to each of you! Since its inception, JTVA has been dedicated to discovering and nurturing exceptional vocalists, allowing them to demonstrate their skills, gain invaluable experience, and receive the support necessary to thrive in their careers. In return, we are inspired by their remarkable artistry. Today is not just a showcase of technical skill, but a celebration of the emotional depth and storytelling that only the human voice can convey.
As we embark on this second decade, I am reminded of the power of music to unite us, to elevate our spirits, and to transcend boundaries. Our commitment to encouraging these gifted artists continues and I am grateful to all of you for making it possible. To our many generous donors, thank you for your belief in the transformative power of music and dedication to nurturing the arts, your contributions are the lifeblood of JTVA. To our esteemed judges, my thanks for your expertise in recognizing and encouraging excellence. To our finalists, thank you for sharing your extraordinary talents with us, your hard work, dedication, and passion are the very heart of this event. May this competition be an unforgettable experience, filled with growth, inspiration, and, above all, the joy of music.

In 2010, Founder James Toland conceived of the idea of a Bay Area voice competition to support emerging singers in their efforts to achieve professional success. The idea met with considerable enthusiasm, including that of the late Oakland Symphony Music Director and Conductor Michael Morgan, who agreed to grant the first-place competition winner the opportunity to perform with the Oakland Symphony. Operations began the following year and JTVA’s initial fundraising goal of $20,000 for first-year competition prize money was met by 2012. The organization incorporated in 2012 and was granted 501(c)3 tax-exempt status the following year. The inaugural JTVA Vocal Competition was held on June 21, 2014, at Holy Names University in Oakland, with fourteen finalists competing in two tiers, selected from a total of more than 125 applicants from around the country.
In 2015, the Bonnie Bell Encouragement Awards were added, providing a monetary award for each finalist who did not finish in the top three, to support their ongoing efforts. General Director Awards have also occasionally been granted to encourage a notable applicant who did not advance to the next round. JTVA has continued to grow steadily, earning a reputation among singers for its collegial and nurturing environment. This year more than 320 applicants applied to compete for over $40,000 in prizes.
JTVA recognizes that Black singers have historically faced inordinate barriers to establishing classically-based singing careers, depriving the world of great voices for generations. Born into slavery in Mississippi and emancipated in the early 1820s, self-taught soprano Elizabeth Greenfield became known as “The Black Swan,” the first African-American singer to gain recognition in Europe and the United States. In 2021, JTVA inaugurated a new award honoring this trailblazing singer to recognize outstanding presentday Black singers by providing meaningful financial assistance to further their careers. Singers in the early stages of a professional career who identify as Black are encouraged to apply. There are no age or repertoire requirements, although applicants are encouraged to highlight music by Black composers. Applications open each summer and winners are announced in November.

1st place — $10,000
2nd place — $6,000
3rd place (Karen Reiter Award) — $5,000
For promising singers seeking support for further study and career advancement:
1st place — $4,000
2nd place — $3,000
3rd place — $2,500
Yes you can! We can help!
There is a financing option that can provide the interim funds you need to buy your next home without selling your current home
Awards are based on a tally of votes by the audience for each tier of the competition.
Tier I — $2,000 Tier II — $1,000
An Encouragement Award of $2,000 will be given to each finalist in the two tiers who does not win a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize. These awards are underwritten through the wonderful generosity of James Bell, in memory of his late wife Bonnie. James has long been recognized for his leadership and support of the Bay Area arts community, including JTVA, where Bonnie was a valued board member from 2018 to 2019.

For the JTVA Vocal Competition, judging is a multi-step process and interest in the competition has increased each year. For 2024, applications were submitted by 322 singers from around the United States and more than a dozen countries. A preliminary panel of five judges viewed and evaluated two videos from each applicant — a total of 644 videos — and selected 50 singers to advance to this year’s semifinals. A second panel of four judges was then tasked with narrowing the field down to five finalists for each tier using a numeric overall scoring system to assess the singers on vocal quality, vocal technique, musicianship, dramatic interpretation, diction, and stage presence. The five finalists in each tier with the highest scores were invited to this weekend’s competition, where they will demonstrate the outstanding talents that launched them to the top.
