What is revival and why do we need one?
Dr. Mike Shaw Senior Pastor In the contemporary church of today you will likely find a coffee shop, a book store, a sign-up center for small groups, an internet cafe, and a welcome center for guests. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these things. If they advance the cause of Christ and righteous living by believers, then I am in favor of any and all of them. One thing is gone from the contemporary church today that I feel is the main cause of the spiritual lethargy in
America, and that is the lack of a heart cry for revival from God’s people. Revival is a time of refreshing, renewal, and rekindling of a first love for Jesus Christ. Revivals are recorded in the Old Testament. In Genesis 35 God revived the house of Jacob; in Isaiah 6 the prophet received a call, cleansing, and commission from God; on Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal and God answered by fire in I Kings 18. In the New Testament Paul told Timothy to “stir up the gift of God” that was in him, and Jesus Christ told the Ephesians church in Revelation 2 that they had “forsaken their first love”. Our church is an active, missional, and evangelistic fellowship but sometimes we “go through the motions” of living for Christ when our fire and focus has dimmed and we may not realize our need for revival. We have set aside the week of August 5-8 as a time to seek for a closer walk of obedience to the Lord. Sammie Gilbreath and Ted Traylor are godly, gifted preachers but only God can send revival. Please join me in prayer for:
(1) revival in the hearts of our church leadership — staff, deacons, Sunday school leaders, leaders of discipleship and ministry leaders. (2) revival in our Sanctuary choir and praise band — I would love to see a choir loft full of fired up singers and musicians in our services. (3) revival in our student ministry as our students go to the largest mission fields in America — our schools and colleges. (4) revival in the hearts of the parents of our children to make godly choices in planning for the spiritual training of their children who will grow up so fast, leaving only a few years for spiritual development. (5) revival in our senior adults to devote the remaining years of their lives to a deeper relationship with God and continued service to His Kingdom. (6) revival in church members and attenders to get more involved in changing our church, so our church can help change the world for Christ. I’m praying for revival; will you join me? I love you, I love you, I love you. God bless you and God bless America!

Dave Says Dear Dave, My son has worked and saved all through school and will be graduating this year with a degree in electrical engineering. He has a job waiting for him when he finishes, and he wants to move out on his own then. I think he should continue to live at home and save up more money. What do you think? Sue Dear Sue, Honestly, I think he should move out. This situation isn’t about money as much as it’s about your son becoming a man. At this point in his life it’s going to be really good for him, emotionally and spiritually, to stand on his own two feet. It sounds like you’ve got some good
Dave Ramsey ideas about saving and financial responsibility, and he needs to take some of Mom’s advice in those areas. But it’s time he had his own place and started paying his own bills. It’s time for this
one to leave the nest, spread his wings, and fly. Here’s something else to think about. He’s going to look a whole lot better to the world if he’s out there standing on his own. I think lots of young ladies, not to mention their parents, will be much more impressed by a guy who’s making his own way rather than living at home with mom. He’s at a point where he’s reaching for dignity and trying to make his way in the world. Let him do it. I’ve got a feeling he’ll make you proud! The Counselor’s Corner Cognitive Distortions, continued Last month’s article listed 12 examples and definitions of distorted thinking that individuals engage in: 1. Filtering, 2. Black and White Thinking, 3. Overgeneralization, 4. Jumping to Conclusions, 5. Catastrophizing, 6. Personalization, 7. Control Fallacies, 8. Fallacy of Fairness, 9. Blaming, 10. Shoulds, 11. Emotional Reasoning, and 12. Fallacy of Change. See last month’s article for definitions. Following are three more cognitive distortions and their definitions. 13. Labeling: Instead of saying “I made a mistake”, a person may say, “I am a jerk or a loser”. 14. Always Being Right: Continually on trial to prove that personal opinions and actions are correct, because being wrong is unthinkable and not acceptable. 15. Heaven’s Reward Fallacy: The expectation that sacrifice and self-denial will pay off. This person feels entitled at times. However, he becomes bitter if the reward doesn’t come. Cognitive distortions are common
in most individuals but are problematic when distorted thinking affects personal relationships. The first approach to moving from distorted thinking is to begin paying attention to the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. They are all connected. If a person thinks he is not important, he will feel he is not important, and the end result is behavior that is reflective of that feeling. Before there was a behavior, a feeling, or a thought, there was a message. Attempt to understand what the message was. Maybe it was a misunderstanding, or perhaps you misinterpreted someone’s actions. Learn to reframe thought processes. Instead of saying “I am always going to be a loser because I made a mistake”, say “I made a mistake but that does not define who I am”, or “I’m not a loser, I just made a mistake”, or “A learning opportunity just presented itself. I learned one way of how not to do it”. Look at this as bringing into captivity every thought unto the obedience of Christ, (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Christians with distorted ways of thinking, often feel guilty, as though they will never be good enough. Romans 8:1 tells us “There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”. Then why do Christians walk around feeling condemned? Because Satan condemns them. He is out to rob every Christian of his Spiritual blessing. In reflecting back to the story of Jesus drawing in the sand, I ponder as to what He drew. Could he have drawn the line and said “Choose whom you will serve!” “Choose whom you will believe!”? God says “You are not condemned”. Satan says “You are”. Choose whom you will believe. Your actions will follow your belief. If you feel condemned, you will live condemned. -Linda Story

August 10-12 Our D’Now is rapidly approaching. Here is what we need: • Host homes — If you have enough room for 10-12 students to sleep on the floor and a couple of bathrooms and want to be a part of the weekend, call the Student Ministry Office. • Meals — Find a friend or two and provide a meal for 12-15 people on Saturday night. • Free time sponsors — If you have a pool, lake, horses, etc., and would allow a group of 12-15 to have access from 1:30 until 4:30 Saturday afternoon, contact us. • Scholarships — Cost per student is $30.00. • Students — Please help us make sure your student is there. Promotion Sunday: The closing session of D’Now is also promotion Sunday. We will introduce new teachers and show you where your new room will be.
Wednesday, August 1, 5 PM, in the Annex This meeting will be in the 6th grade girls’ room (Room A114) in the Annex. We will be serving pizza and need a reservation for the number of people from your family who will be attending. Reservations can be made by calling the Student Ministry Office or by emailing babbott@fbcpelham.org.
August 19 begins at 4 PM at the Pelham YMCA
This is our annual church-wide get together for some fun outside the usual church schedule. We have two hours of fellowship with games, basketball, volleyball, swimming pool and then a cookout at 6:00. The church will provide hamburgers, buns and drinks. Bring side items. This is always a great time to get to know new people. We hope your entire family will join us. This is a FREE event.
Student Discipleship Training Orientation
Sunday, August 26, 5-7 PM in the Annex We will overview the Discipleship classes for students and Creative Ministries. Priority registration is given to those students who attend. Many of our classes have a fee for books, usually less than $10.00. Several of our classes are limited to 12 for discussion purposes. After our orientation we will hang out in the Annex and play.

Women’s Ministry FBCP Fall Ladies Retreat
Shocco Springs “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness” October 19-20 Registration begins mid-August for our 2012 ladies’ retreat at Shocco Springs. The cost ($85) includes lodging for one night and three meals. Deadline is Sept. 9. Come and enjoy fellowship, fun and food as we reflect on and celebrate God’s faithfulness in our lives. Dear Senior Adults, Our summer is winding down, and we’ve had a busy one. Our seniors did a marvelous job in VBS. In July, we had a good number for our luncheon. Then more than 34 were able to visit the Billy Graham Library. But now a new season is on the horizon. Remember, our revival is coming up August 5-8. I know I can count on our senior adults to be faithful. For our August meeting, we will be taking a day trip. We will have lunch in Columbiana and visit the museums there. Come and go with us. It’s a great time for fun and fellowship. Remember, the final payment is due for those of us who are registered for the Celebrators Conference in Sevierville. More day trips will be coming up soon. Cooler heads prevail
A woman was often annoyed by a male coworker. One day he had harassed her so much that she was about to explode. She decided to confront him while her blood boiled. The woman began walking to the man’s desk. Before reaching his cubicle, she saw a packing case with some computer equipment in it. On the side of the box were the words, “Do not get overheated”. That made her stop and think. The woman took those words as a message from God. She calmed herself down and returned to her desk. Later, she told her children that instead of doing something wrong when their anger gets out of control, their prayer should be, “O God, remind me that I am a Christian”. —copied
Children’s Ministry Promotion Sunday is not far away and we need more teachers and helpers! Promotion Sunday for bed babies through 12th grade is Sunday, August 12. We are currently in the process of filling all our volunteer spots for the fall, and have numerous holes to fill. We cannot function as a preschool and children’s ministry without the help of volunteers. Worship Care (extended session) If you are a parent of a child in our ministry, we need your help in this area. However, you don’t have to be a parent to volunteer. Please contact the Preschool and Children’s Ministry Office (216-0028). Beeper Table We need additional volunteers on Sunday morning to be greeters at our first floor beeper table. Sunday School Below is a list of the teachers we need in the different Sunday school age groups in order to begin the fall semester. New curriculum for 1st - 5th grades Beginning this Fall, we will be transitioning 1st-5th grade Sunday school from our current curriculum to a new curriculum produced by Answers in Genesis. We have been using Answers in Genesis curriculum for Vacation Bible School for the past couple of years and have had very good results. We anticipate the Sunday school to benefit from it just as much as our VBS has done.
