A Summer for the Savior Continues …
Dr. Mike Shaw Senior Pastor As I pen this article (yes, I said “pen” because I write it out), we have finished a great Vacation Bible School,
celebrated the successful return of our Africa and Peru mission teams, sent the youth off to Centrifuge, and welcomed Don and Diane Dixon to our church family. Bob Cleveland, Paul and Barbara Moore, and Mary and I will represent our church as messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention in New Orleans next week. And then over 100 of our members will head to Jackson, Mississippi for a week of mission work. In July we have the God and Country services on July 1, homecoming block party on July 8, special discipleship classes on July 15 and 22, and a covered-dish supper and gospel singing in the annex on the evening of July 29. On Sunday
morning, July 29, we will participate in the Lord’s Supper in all three morning services. August 5-8 is our church-wide revival. Our guest preachers will be Dr. Sammie Gilbreath on Sunday morning and Dr. Ted Traylor Sunday night through Wednesday night. Paula will lead our worship on Sunday morning, George Weeks on Sunday night, Bruce Hill on Monday night, Rick Stone on Tuesday night and Don Dixon on Wednesday night. You don’t want to miss one service! Pray, invite your friends, and come expecting to hear from God! I love you, I love you, I love you. God bless you and God bless America!

Dave Says Dear Dave, I have a problem with impulse spending. I switched to a debit card so that the money comes straight out of my checking account, but I still buy things I know I shouldn’t. Should I stop using the card? Lauren Dear Lauren, First, let me say that debit cards are great. You can’t spend money you don’t have with them like you can with a credit card, but you’ve still got to budget carefully and give a name to every single penny of your income. Otherwise, you can still overspend. When I made the decision to get intentional with my money, I just used cash. It’s hard to spend it when you don’t have any on you. It’s a tough thing, I know, but you have to make a conscious decision to start living differently. You have to get mad at the things that steal your money a dollar or two at a time, and you have to put your foot down. Enough is enough! Try

Dear Trevor, No, there’s not. Unfortunately, in today’s culture that’s part of becoming an adult. When you hand them car keys there’s no way to put a block on how they drive. And when they turn 21, there’s no way to put a block on what they ingest. About the only thing you can do is to teach your kids to the best of your ability, and be a good parent and good example. Teach them why debt is dumb, and show them how it eats away at their ability to save money and build wealth. And for goodness sake, don’t use credit cards yourself. The Cheergivers would like to feature our lovely Ms. Mary Lou Smith this month. Mary Lou was born in 1919 and was 93 years young on June 18. She was born in Jacksonville, Alabama and married Hoyt Lloyd Smith at the age of 17. They lived in Avondale for many years. He was employed at Avondale Mills in the spinning room for a long time. They had three children — Gary, Teldon and Mariece. She has lived with Mariece and her husband in Pelham since the 90’s. Mary Lou could not remember the exact date she was saved but she has a personal relationship with the Lord and knows she is His child. She is also a cancer survivor since 1958. In her younger days, Mary Lou worked twenty years for Lovemans in downtown Birmingham. Later she was an LPN, beginning her training at Princeton and working approximately twenty years at Montclair. I was privileged to visit with her two nieces as I took this information from her, and they told me she was a wonderful cook. She is a delightful lady to visit and she loves our visits. Mary Lou would like for the church to pray for her son, Gary, as he is recovering from cancer. She would like for us to remember her also, for her many health issues.

The Counselor’s Corner Cognitive Distortions Many individuals have thought processes that are not healthy. One technique that is used in therapy is to help the person identify the negative and distorted ways that they think, and then to change their thinking to a more positive and healthy way. Below are Aaron Beck’s and David Burns’ examples of cognitive distortions. One point I would like to make here is this: While this technique was popularized several years ago, it was not a new discovery. Scripture points out that we are how we think. We should think on positive things, and we should bring every thought captive unto the obedience of Christ. 1. Filtering. We take the negative details and magnify them while filtering out all positive aspects of a situation. 2. “Black and White” Thinking. In polarized thinking, things are either “black or white.” We have to be perfect or we’re a failure — there is no middle ground.
3. Overgeneralization. A person may see a single, unpleasant event as part of a never-ending pattern of defeat. 4. Jumping to Conclusions. A person may conclude that someone is reacting negatively toward them but doesn’t have evidence; or a person may anticipate that things will turn out badly, and will feel convinced that their prediction is already an established fact. 5. Catastrophizing. We expect disaster to strike, no matter what. This is also referred to as “magnifying or minimizing.” A person might exaggerate the importance of insignificant events. Or they may inappropriately shrink the magnitude of significant events until they appear tiny. 6. Personalization. A person believes that everything others do or say is some kind of direct, personal reaction; or compares themselves to others trying to determine who is smarter, better looking, etc. A person engaging in personalization may also see themselves as the cause of some unhealthy external event that they were not responsible for. 7. Control Fallacies. If we feel external-
ly controlled, we see ourselves as a helpless victim of fate. Internal control has us assuming responsibility for the pain and happiness of everyone around us. 8. Fallacy of Fairness. We feel resentful because we think we know what is fair, but other people won’t agree with us. 9. Blaming. We hold other people responsible for our pain, or take the other track and blame ourselves for every problem. 10. Shoulds. A list of rules about how we and others should behave. People who break the rules make us angry, and we feel guilty when we violate these rules. Musts and oughts are also offenders. 11. Emotional Reasoning. We believe that what we feel must be true automatically. If we feel stupid and boring, then we must be stupid and boring. 12. Fallacy of Change. We expect that other people will change to suit us if we just pressure or cajole them enough. We need to change people because our hopes for happiness seem to depend entirely on them. “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” As we celebrate America’s birthday, it’s interesting to note that clergymen wrote both the Pledge of Allegiance and the hymn “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”. Rev. Francis Bellamy wrote the hymn in 1831. Both men were Baptist ministers. The pledge was first used in public schools in 1892 during Columbus Day observances. “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” was used as a national song before “The Star-Spangled Banner” was named America’s national anthem in 1931. “America the Beautiful” Katharine Lee Bates (1959-1929) wrote, edited and taught English in her native Massachusetts. Occasionally, she wrote hymns, too. On a trip to Colorado, Bates was greatly impressed by amber waves of grain, fruited plains and purple mountain majesties. She believed that God had definitely shed his grace all across this land. A visit to the summer of Pikes Peak inspired bates to write her most famous poem-hymn, “America the Beautiful.” Bates also realized that patriotism was an important part of America. She was grateful for heroes “who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life.” She wanted all Americans to realize how God had shed his grace on them and had crowned what was good “with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.”
