Color Schema

esc

Each issue of ESC will have a two-color scheme that is used for headlines, body copy, graphic elements, illustrations, and most importantly, color-grading photographs. The two colors will be relatively complementary, with one color having a lighter tone to serve as a highlight to the other.

issue 1 C= 0% M= 92% Y= 68% K= 0%

C= 56% M= 0% Y= 25% K= 0%

issue 2 C= 100% M= 87% Y= 1% K= 0%

The Grid

esc

ESC is designed around a six column grid. This flexible grid is open to interpretation and experimentation from spread to spread. It serves as more of a spring board for experimentation than a rigid set of rules to be strictly adhered to.

6

Page numbers and magazine name are placed vertically along the outer margin in the following locations. Spreads that are more visually busy do not need the page number and magazine name, but it cannot be absent for more than 3 pages. The color of the text can be changed between black, white, or either of the issue’s primary color palette.

There are, however, some conventions. Body copy generally spans two columns by default. Rag right or justified text is preferred; whatever strengthens the spread. We encourage interesting compositional alignments and justifications along the six column grid, but we put a lot of faith in our designers to openly interpret these guidelines.

Table of Contents is based on a playful use of color blocks and color-treated photography. The blocks are from each issue’s palette. The treated photographs should be photos used in the articles they reference.

The Current is a recurring department about social and political topics in or pertaining to Atlanta. This department allows our writers and designers to voice their opinions and lend their voices to issues they think deserve a spotlight.

The format of The Current is extremely flexible. The position of the masthead is the only fixed aspect of the layout. The rest is open to interpretation around the standard six column grid. The design should reflect the subject addressed.

PHOTO COLOR TREATMENT

10

Gradient Mapping Photo is altered using the Gradient Map option in Adobe Photoshop. This process simpliďŹ es and converts the levels in a photo to a speciďŹ ed gradient. This gradient will either be the complete color palette of the issue, or one color fading to black or white.

Color Overlays Photo is converted to grayscale, with increased contrast as necessary. Blocks of color are thoughtfully composed above the photo, and are set to Overlay or Multiply, by accessing the Opacity dialogue box.

esc Photo is duplicated, and the new copy is converted into a Color Halftone per default settings. This is Gradient Mapped with your chosen colors. The copy is then Overlaid on top of the original image to maintain visual legibility.

Solid Halftone Photo is converted to grayscale, with significantly increased contrast. This is converted to a Color Halftone, with all respective fields changed to “0”.
