Dear Ramsey Residents, Let me start by saying thank you, Ramsey. I am grateful beyond measure that our first issue of Ramsey Neighbors was embraced by you. I am thrilled by the excitement it generated and invigorated by the forward momentum.

The review I heard over and over that meant the most to me: you are happy about the positivity we are putting into the universe. Our goal is to bring people together and highlight what is good in the community and right in the world. Who doesn’t need more of that these days?

Speaking of highlighting what is good in our community, meet the Behrmann family. You think you know all the ways they contribute to our town? Think again. And what is right in the world? I’d like to introduce you to Second Lieutenant Sophie-Leigh Baxter-Clark, a graduate of Ramsey High School, stationed in South Korea. In her own words, she shares with us why she chose a life of service. Throughout the issue, you’ll get to meet more of the amazing people who keep Ramsey moving forward every day. It is their stories that Ramsey Neighbors is eager to share.

joined the fire department five years ago. Laura is a past president of Ramsey Ambulance and honorary member.

She retired from actively riding on the ambulance about three years ago. She is also an administrative member and treasurer of Ramsey Rescue.

What do you like most about being part of these organizations?

Brian: All three organizations are wonderful to be a part of, each for various reasons. They have a lot of well trained, caring individuals, who dedicate their time to training and responding. It’s very rewarding to be able to help our neighbors when they need it most. I also find it very rewarding to share my knowledge and experiences with the younger members as they grow and progress through the organizations. What started out for me as continuing a family tradition has grown into a real love for each organization. It’s been an incredible way for me to give back to the community that has been good to me in so many ways.

Laura and Brian’s passion for volunteering brought them together and ignited the spark that keeps them committed to making a difference every day.

How did you meet?

Brian: You could say Ramsey brought us together. We met volunteering here. I have been a member of Ramsey Ambulance and Ramsey Rescue since I was at Ramsey High school.

Laura had been a volunteer EMT in Franklin Lakes since she was a student at Ramapo High School and joined Ramsey Ambulance a few years after she moved to town.

We met on a call, went out on our first date a few weeks later, got engaged 8 ½ months later on New Year’s Eve and were married 8 ½ months after that! It was a quick courtship, but all because of our passion for giving back Laura, did you grow up here too?

My grandfather, David Dixon, was a Charter Member of the Ramsey Ambulance Corps and my great-grandfather, James Dixon and my great uncle Eugene Dixon were Charter Members of the Ramsey Fire Department – so you can see my roots run deep!

that I would be a good fit for the Board. I attended meetings for nearly a year before running myself. Almost two years ago, my colleagues elected me Board President. I am humbled and honored to serve our community in this capacity. What are you excited about in your daughter Madison’s future?

Laura: Madison will really benefit from all the changes we are making in the Ramsey School District, so that is something we are really looking forward to!

Do you guys ever sleep? Seriously, what is your secret to achieving a good home work life balance and still being so active in the community by volunteering so much of your time?

Laura: Organization and communication! We have a color-coded electronic calendar to manage it all. We volun8

teer extensively in the community and Connor participates in several sports, scouts, church youth group, and takes trumpet lessons. Balancing all of that with both of our work schedules can sometimes be a challenge, but we make it work. We carve out time as a family and now that Madison is a little older, we are back to planning a date night once a month. We also try to volunteer together when we can! In addition to L.E.A.D, Rescue and Ambulance, we are both on the Board for the Ramsey Soccer Association and volunteer at our church, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. As you can see, we truly believe that giving back to our community is important and we are instilling that in our children.

In your eyes, what makes our community special?

Brian: Ramsey is a very unique community – many families are similar to ours in that one or both parents are Ramsey graduates and have chosen to also raise their families here. We are astounded by how many parents we see at various school functions who also went to high school with Brian. Why do they choose Ramsey? We have a vibrant downtown area filled with great restaurants and shops; our children have a myriad of opportunities to participate in; our library offers a large array of programs to residents of all ages; we have many opportu-

nities to come together as a community (Memorial Day, July 4th, Halloween, Ramsey Day, Taste of Ramsey, baseball opening day, Veteran’s Day, Home for the Holidays); and we have easy access to New York City by train or car for those of us who commute.

Memorial Day: Honoring Our Military

Why I Chose to Serve

M

y story starts in 2003, when my family emigrated to the United States from South Africa, via England. I moved around a lot as a child, so Ramsey was truly my first home. I started school at Tisdale Elementary, was the last 5th grade class of Hubbard, and finally moved up to the High School as a member of the Class of 2013.

We were close family friends with the Reillys when Michael passed away in 2008. Thousands of people poured into the town for his funeral; he was a Marine. During my sophomore year of high school, CPL Mike Jankiewicz returned home from Afghanistan in a flag-laden casket. I couldn’t think of any way better to pay my respects than pursuing a career in the Service.

While I attended Ramsey High School, I was a member of the Big Blue Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. As a sophomore I was shyly playing the Euphonium, but as a Senior I was a Section Leader of the Baritones in marching band, first chair Euphonium in the Wind Ensemble, and a Trombone player in the award-winning Jazz Band. The mentorship and leadership opportunities I received through the music program from older students, the staff, and Mr. Bialkin were instrumental in my development as a young leader.

Being an immigrant shaped my decision in many ways. I knew in my heart that being in the military was what I wanted. I felt that it was a way to give back to a country that had given me and my family so much freedom and opportunity, as well as a way to protect that freedom for my mother, sister and the rest of our community. While my classmates struggled through choosing which colleges to apply to, I had only one in mind: The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. The most prestigious military school outside of the United States Military Academy at West Point, The Citadel is a small public military college in Charleston, the last of any public institution to lift their ban on female cadets in 1996.

I graduated Ramsey High School and matriculated into the South Carolina Corps of Cadets as a member of the Class of 2017 at just 17 years old. The Class of 2017 graduated just over 400 Cadets, only 5% of which was female.

During my tenure at The Citadel, I climbed the ranks from Cadet Private to Major, holding the positions of Recruiting Corporal, Company Supply NCO, Instrumental Music Di-

rector’s Assistant, and Battalion Academic Officer. I was a member of the Regimental Band and Pipes as a Baritone and First Trombone player, the National History Honors Society, and Criminal Justice Society. I majored in Non-Western History and minored in Criminal Justice and Intelligence & Homeland Security. I spent the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year in Edinburgh, Scotland, representing the United States at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. In January of 2017, I was afforded the opportunity to march in the Inaugural Parade for President Trump. After just 4 years, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.87 GPA and a Commission into the United States Army Military Police Corps as a Second Lieutenant. I was the first person, male or female, from Ramsey to be accepted to and

graduate from The Citadel.

After graduating college, I attended the United States Army Military Police Basic Officer Leaders Course. I’m currently deployed to South Korea with the 188th Military Police Company where I’m the 3rd Platoon Leader. As a Platoon Leader, I’m responsible for the Combat Support training, Law Enforcement duties, and welfare of over 50 Soldiers and Korean Augmentees to the US Army (KATUSAs) ranging in rank from Private to Staff Sergeant. It’s a privilege to work for these Soldiers day in and day out as they protect Area IV logistical nodes and keep our community safe halfway across the world.

It’s an honor to represent Ramsey everywhere I go, knowing that it has shaped me tremendously into who I am today. Go Rams!

Let Me Introduce Myself

Robotics, circuitry, gaming, trivia and concerts/openmics - these are all new things coming to the Ramsey Free Public Library. Before we go into these unique and fun offerings, let me take this opportunity to introduce myself - my name is Matt Latham and I am the new Director of the Ramsey Free Public Library. I’m now in my third month as Director and I’m very excited to join the Ramsey community and to build on the good work already being done by the Ramsey Library staff. For a little about myself - I served as Director of the Leonia Public Library for four years and before that was a program/ adult services librarian at the Hoboken Public Library. In my time as a professional librarian, I’ve worked to create libraries that offer function as a dynamic community organization, providing a range of services from STEM tools and classes to digital collections to fun events and training. I believe strongly that public libraries serve a vital and diverse function in local communities, providing services to all members of the community. In addition to our physical collections for borrowing, libraries now offer classes in technologies and STEM, encourage the arts and the development of personal skills, provide job seeking resources, ESL classes, homework resources and much more. My passion is to continually seek new and innovative services, collections and events to offer - and I intend to do just this at the Ramsey Public Library So what new things ARE happening at the Ramsey 12

Public Library? First - we just launched a new Tech Lending service, where library cardholders can borrow kits in robotics, circuitry, engineering and other STEM tools.

We are also about to launch a brand new website, which will offer vastly improved useability, access to resources and improved design. Accessing information, signing up for programs or reserving a museum pass will all soon be easier with our new website.

The library also now offers new services for downloadable and streaming content. Services like Hoopla and RB Digital offer access to eBooks, streaming movies and TV, streaming British TV shows, digital comics and magazines and much more. Use your library card to access via the Hoopla or RB Digital apps or via a home computer.

Finally, we are starting to take some new directions in our events and classes. For adults we are offering a regular series of Trivia Nights with team trivia - we already offered 1980s Trivia, with 1970s and 1990s Trivia events coming soon. The library will also be offering a bi-monthly series of after hours concerts and open-mics for all ages. We will have a featured band followed by an open microphone for anyone to share their music, poetry or other performance art. There are many more programs we will be offering as well - a summer ComicCon, animal education programs, lectures, arts and crafts, etc.

Do Pilates Do Life!

lub Pilates opened in Ramsey the day after Thanksgiving, 2016. We rapidly started learning about the Ramsey community and how strong the ties were. Everyone seemed to know everyone. We were for tunate t hat Mayor Deirdre Dillon was an early member. We were amazed that the Ramsey Cinema was financed by local Ramsey people, keeping a community theater (which has the best popcorn I’ve ever had!). We remain proud to be advertising there every time you go to the movies.

Entering into this franchise (we were the second Club Pilates in New Jersey) was a new venture for me; my work experience had been with large corporations. I was proud to be someone closely involved in running the plants which made everything from grocery bags and sacks and bathroom tissue to computers and contact lenses. The tangibility of this kind of work really appealed to me. I liked working with people who were involved in creating something from something else.

We were pushing out real products

every day. With Club Pilates, I found we’re offering an exercise regimen which is changing people’s bodies, day by day. That too counts as something tangible!

Our members are involved in creating something new in themselves, using the Pilates Reformer. Pilates is called a mind/body practice and it truly is. When you lie down (lie down to exercise! Can you believe it?) you are perfectly aligned. You then proceed to do your exercises in that state. All parts of your body have to work together, without one side or the other covering for the various weaknesses we’ve all developed over time. Computer shoulder slump? Bad back? Pilates helps!

Pilates started out as physical therapy for wounded WWI soldiers. Therapy is something I know about as I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1989. I am fortunate in how the disease has progressed in my body and mind, but it has definitely made it important that I pay attention to my body’s capabilities. The best advice for someone with MS was to make sure you were at optimal levels so when an exacerbation came, you were starting from a high point.

Going back to my experience, before I was making ‘things’ that people used.

Now I’m providing an opportunity for people to remake their bodies and minds.

Even if that means thinking outside the box? That is where Dr. Leah VanBlarcom comes in! Dr. Leah VanBlarcom is an AVCA Certified Animal Chiropractor at Bergen County Veterinary Center. She provides treatment that is supplemental to conventional veterinary medicine. Dr. VanBlarcom answers some of the most commonly asked patient questions for us.

What is animal chiropractic and how can it help my pet?

Animal Chiropractic care is the application of specific adjustments to the joints of the body that are not moving properly. These adjustments are intended to restore proper movement and function to the body. When joints are not moving correctly or are “stuck,” we refer to it as a “subluxation”. These subluxations can cause a number of issues such as: pain, stiffness, gait abnormalities, behavioral changes, trouble getting up and down stairs and/or jumping up and down, etc. A Chiropractic adjustment is ultimately a procedure in which a trained specialist (me!) uses either their hands or a special instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of this is to not only improve spinal motion and ease of moving in general but to also improve the body’s overall physical function. The adjustment is the perfect complement to traditional veterinary care because it promotes

healing and restoration of proper movement. Not only can chiropractic care treat an existing problem, but it can also be effective as a preventative measure. By keeping the body in proper alignment, we are promoting continual health and often preventing certain issues from happening in the first place. In short, chiropractic care can be used for prevention, to help senior pets struggling with pain due to arthritis and other ailments, as well as keeping working and show dogs functioning at the high level of performance that is expected of them.

Why do vets and chiropractors work together?

We work together so we can best treat your animals! It has been proven that working together has undeniable advantages in the treatment of ailments our patients might be experiencing.

We are reminded of it daily. Often, we are not aware of an issue until our pet exhibits a physical symptom. These physical symptoms are most commonly age and/or injury related.

We need to look at chiropractic care as another tool and additional treatment that a veterinarian has access to, to be as effective as possible in the care and treatment they provide and recommend for our pets. I would never tell anyone to use it in replacement of traditional medicine as it is most effective when used in conjunction with.

Get to know the Ramsey Area Garden Club

The Ramsey Garden Club was established in 1982 by five friends.

Their objective was to pursue their interest in all phases of home gardening and promote better horticultural practices, civic beauty and the conservation of natural resources. Civic beautification projects that began with the original founders continue today and include the planters at the Main Street Train Station, Main Street Triangle and Ramsey’s Old Stone House. By 1993, with a membership of over forty, including many “out of towners,” the name was changed to the Ramsey Area Garden Club. Past and current projects of The Club include but are not limited to: A Garden at Winter’s Park in Mahwah; Christmas decorating at Skylands; The Hermitage and The Fell House; Horticultural Therapy; Annual Scholarship Awards to students pursuing careers in environmental studies, horticulture and landscape design; centerpieces for annual luncheons to benefit breast cancer research; Annual Plant Sale in May at the Ramsey Main Street Train Station; Garden Tours and Trips.

Tuesday of each month at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey, NJ from September through May. Each meeting hosts a one hour lecture given by various professionals in the horticultural field.

Residents of Ramsey and the surrounding towns are welcome to attend these free lectures. It is a wonderful way to learn new gardening information and exchange your experiences with fellow gardeners in the area. The lecture and question/answer session scheduled for our May meeting will be given by Don Torino is titled “Important Facts About Hummingbirds and How To Attract Them To Your Garden.”

Our Annual Plant Sale is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 11th from 9 am-2pm. For the past 20 years, the Plant Sale has been an important fundraiser for the Garden Club. It has always taken place the second Saturday in May (the Saturday before Mother’s Day) at the train station. All proceeds benefit Educational Scholarship Studies in – Botany, Environmental Science, Forestry, Horticultural Studies, charitable contributions to NJ Botanical Garden (Skylands) and The Garden Conservancy.

The Ramsey Area Garden Club provides plantings in Ramsey Main Street Triangle and Main Street Train Station.

We offer a variety of selected plants from local vendors including flowering baskets, annuals, plants, perennials---all locally grown from member gardens. All are available for sale in the Railroad Station. The 10” Hanging Baskets will provide displays of Fuchsia, Ivy Geraniums, Begonia and other plants. The locally grown perennials are unusual plants and will be a wonderful addition to anyone’s garden. The plant labels will describe the nature and environment for the plants. We hope to see you at our events in May!

Italian Staples

Here is a recipe that I use quite frequently. I haven’t bought jar sauce in years. This recipe is adapted from Rao’s original recipe. We keep it in the fridge for pizzas, chicken parm, meatballs, etc. I love getting all the ingredients from Steve’s- always fresh and high quality. I shop at Steve’s several times a week… deciding each day what to cook, what looks good that day for dinner. We lived in Hoboken for years, and loved stopping at the market or butcher on the way home from work.

Steve’s provides that same feeling of community.

Marinara Sauce

1/2 cup Olive Oil 1 medium sized onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 3 (28 oz) cans of Italian plum tomatoes peeled, hand crushed with juice.

1 teaspoon of dried oregano. (might need to add a bit more; taste) salt/pepper to taste (I use: a little less than a tablespoon of kosher salt- add half at a time to taste. About 15-20 turns of pepper grinder) 6-8 fresh basil leaves

Heat oil in large dutch oven. Saute onion until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, saute until lightly golden, about 2-3 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes and juice. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer on low for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally. Use stick blender to blend tomatoes/onions. Add salt, pepper, oregano to taste. Stir in basil leaves. Cook 1 minute. Ready to serve. Makes about 4-5 cups.

Meatballs

Makes about 14-18 meatballs 2 lbs of Steve’s Market meatloaf mix 2 eggs 2 cups of freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese 2 cups cold water 2 cups Steve’s Fresh plain breadcrumbs 1 1/2 TBS fresh parsley, chopped Salt, pepper to taste

Preheat oven 400 degrees. With hands, combine meat, 2 eggs, parsley, minced garlic and salt and pepper to taste until mixed. Add breadcrumbs and blend into meat mixture. Slowly add cold water, 1 cup at a time and mix until meat is moist. Do not overwork the meat mixture.

Use ice cream scoop to make uniform meatballs and place on parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 7 minutes, flip onto other side and bake another 7 minutes. Gently place in sauce. Shake large dutch oven to cover meatballs with sauce… do not stir or meatballs will break. Simmer on low for 15 minutes.
