Beautiful always in all ways.

Beauty Standard and Beauty Positivity.

The movement regarding body positivity promotes unattainable beauty standards. Instead, it promotes the notion that every body type is lovely and deserving of acceptance. Helping people feel better about themselves and their bodies are the main goals of body positivity. Images of people with seemingly perfect bodies and faces are frequently posted on social media platforms, however, these people frequently enhance their appearances using filters and photo editing software. As a result, both men and women develop unrealistic beauty standards, which causes body dissatisfaction and low selfesteem.

The Filipino people are naturally endowed and gifted with a natural tan, or “morena” skin tone. However, as the years passed, beauty standards changed drastically. Colonialism and colonial mentality are huge factors in this alteration. White, which is the absence of color, stands for innocence, cleanliness, and purity. Whiteness also denotes status and superiority in the Philippines. In a culture where having lighter skin is, having white skin becomes a goal, if not an obsession.

Photograph by Venice Villas

In the Philippines, having clean, white skin is the main sign of attractiveness However, the presence of a fine, racially European skin hue is the proper description in the Filipino measure of perfect beauty. Another characteristic of desirable racial hybridity, in which white is the predominant color, is peach-colored skin. Because of these standards that were set by western influences, traditional Filipina beauty is looked down upon on so many levels It came to the point where Filipinas tried their very best to renounce their natural beauty to conform to what society saw as fitting.

90's-20's

This is reflected in people with fairer skin having more privilege in some industries, such as fashion and modeling. Nowadays, we see a lot of advertisements for papaya bar soaps, glutathione drip procedures, or any other medical operations that promise fairer skin to the client.

How long are we going to conform and believe in this oppressive idea and standard? Is it, not time for the Filipina to embrace their own beauty in terms of color, shape, and identity?

In general, beauty standards are a highly complex social process that is maintained by a variety of social statuses. Although certain researchers contend that evolution is to blame for beauty standards, many other facets of society have influenced what is deemed to be the ideal appearance.
You are your own standard of beauty.

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

When it comes to body positivity, regardless of what society and popular culture believe to be the ideal shape, size, and appearance, body positivity is the idea that everyone deserves to have a positive body image. Although challenging how society perceives people based on their physical characteristics is only one aspect of body positivity. It also acknowledges that racial, gendered, sexual, and disability-based assumptions frequently occurs.

Additionally, body positivity seeks to educate the people on how popular media narratives influence how people feel about their bodies, including how they perceive food, exercise, clothing, health, identity, and self-care. It is hoped that by having a better understanding of how these influences work, people will be able to have healthier and more sensible relationships with their bodies.

Photograph by Taja Mari Cobar

The body positivity idea promotes body love and acceptance in an effort to improve body image. It is distinct from the body neutrality movement, which places more emphasis on the body's function than its external look. The body positivity movement has not been successful in promoting inclusivity, despite its noble aims. Studies show that the majority of Instagram posts with the movement's hashtags, such as #bodypositivity, feature young, Caucasian, non-disabled females.

The body-positive movement aims to reject prevailing cultural standards of attractiveness and accept various points of view. Because it broadens the definition of "beauty" to encompass a variety of bodies, it also aims to be inclusive. The ultimate objective is to encourage acceptance of various body types and an appreciation of their diversity.

COMBATING

DISCRIMINATION

Discrimination is a harmful and unjust practice that needs to be eradicated from society once and for all Although it might seem like a neverending battle, we must keep fighting against discrimination in all its forms. Whether it is based on skin color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other factor, discrimination can deeply affect the lives of individuals and communities, robbing them of opportunities, rights, and human dignity.

It takes numerous forms and can be devastating to those who are victims of it. Additionally, it is also undeniably a pervasive societal issue that has far-reaching negative consequences. Fighting discrimination is a multifaceted task that requires the collective effort of individuals, communities, governments, and organizations. The first step to combating discrimination is to acknowledge its existence and prevalence. It can cause individuals to feel marginalized, excluded, and can lead to reduced access to opportunities and resources, as well as diminished overall well-being.

Combatting discrimination requires a concerted effort from all levels of society, including individuals, organizations, and governments.

Education, awareness-raising campaigns, and legal frameworks are crucial tools in the fight against discrimination Furthermore, actively fostering an inclusive and accepting culture can go a long way in reducing discrimination It is essential to acknowledge the harm caused by discrimination and work towards creating a world where everyone has equal access to opportunities and is free to be their authentic selves without fear of prejudice or discrimination As a global community, we must commit to doing our part to ensure that discrimination is eradicated from our society.

Reducing discrimination also requires the promotion of diversity and inclusion.

Recognizing and understanding the different forms of discrimination, such as those based on race, gender, sexuality, and religion, are crucial in developing strategies to combat it. This can be done through education, awareness campaigns, and open discussions. Another critical step is the creation and implementation of laws, policies, and procedures that prohibit discrimination in all spheres of life This includes employment, education, healthcare, and access to public services It is essential to ensure that victims of discrimination have access to legal remedies and support from relevant authorities. Reducing discrimination also requires the promotion of diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved by celebrating and respecting differences, creating safe spaces for marginalized groups, and ensuring that people from all backgrounds have equal opportunities and representation

Photograph by Taja Mari Cobar

Furthermore, it is crucial to hold oppressors accountable. It is not enough to merely address individual acts of discrimination. To achieve widespread change, systemic discrimination must also be addressed. This may involve challenging institutional biases, re-evaluating social norms, and holding institutions accountable for perpetuating discrimination. Fighting discrimination is a challenging but essential task that requires a collective effort. By acknowledging its existence, creating laws and policies to prohibit it, promoting diversity and inclusion, and holding oppressors accountable, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Women from all races, nations, and walks of life tell their own stories hidden and told ones. They may flash a smile, but behind that is a frown. They may show off their confidence, but behind that are lingering insecurities. They may utter a laugh, but behind that is a voice screaming to be heard and understood. They may have sparkling, angelic eyes, but behind them is a sea of melancholy. They may display stylish clothes, but beneath that are bruises, wounds, and scars. There are still countless untold stories of women who are eagerly awaiting recognition. Empowering them provides a chance for us to develop into agents of change that others can follow. Together, let’s take a step to attain true social change along with the other women to combat discrimination because "women united are stronger than a country divided."

Fighting discrimination is a challenging but essential task that requires a collective effort.

Stereotypes in the Society

"You’re too emotional."

"Act like a lady."

"You're too pretty to be smart."

You should solely stay at home and take care of your husband's requirements as a wife. You should not even consider acquiring a professional career as a woman because it is not what people expect from you Just stay still and do not move "She" appears to be a doll whose main aim is to play the role of a damsel in distress as seen in movies. These are merely a few of the numerous comments made to women when they show a side of themselves to the world due to gender stereotypes

These stereotypes portray women as soft, sensitive, and loving individuals who only excel at housework and care obligations Women are encouraged to prioritize their families above their careers, desires, and objectives, which are frequently dismissed as irrelevant. These preconceived assumptions restrict women's capacity for personal and professional growth and make breaking away from established gender conventions difficult

Stereotypes have a huge influence on a woman's life, shaping her experiences and limiting her options These narrowminded attitudes typically constrain women to predetermined roles and expectations, ignoring their originality and distinguishing characteristics. Stereotypes stifle progress, whether it is the perception that women are less capable in certain fields or the need to conform to established gender norms. These harm a woman's self-esteem, leading her to mistrust her abilities and potential. Stereotypes can also influence how society perceives and treats women, resulting in biased judgments and unequal treatment

Photograph by Taja Mari Cobar

However, men, like women, are subjected to these stereotyped ideas as well. These preconceptions affect the majority of men's lives by influencing their identities and relationships. Males are usually portrayed in society as powerful, assertive, and invulnerable individuals who exhibit traditional masculine qualities This controlled viewpoint, however, misses men's vast range of experiences, emotions, and abilities These myths may place huge pressure on men to conform, stifling their own selves and limiting their growth potential Most men who do not match these norms face criticism, isolation, or even disdain, which causes them to question their worth and battle with self-acceptance

As we start to recognize the stereotypes associated with both genders, we see the importance of promoting feminism in order to fight these gender norms It may take time, but we must go carefully in order to achieve progressive change in the formation of society's standards Not just for women, not just for men, but for every gender. Feminism aims to include everyone. You have been seen.

Feminism is about striving for equality between men and women. It believes that everyone, regardless of their gender, should have the same rights, opportunities, and respect in society. By challenging stereotypes and breaking down gender-based barriers, feminism promotes a more inclusive and fair world for everyone. When women are empowered and given equal opportunities, it benefits not only them but also men and society as a whole.

Feminism challenges harmful notions of masculinity, allowing men to express themselves freely and break free from societal expectations. It works towards creating healthier relationships by promoting consent and respect. Feminism also advocates for equal access to education, employment, and healthcare, fostering a more equitable society where everyone can thrive.

Feminism recognizes that by uplifting and supporting all individuals, regardless of their gender, we can create a better and more harmonious world for everyone.

Photograph by Taja Mari Cobar Photograph by Taja Mari Cobar

We can promote feminism by treating individuals fairly and respectfully, regardless of gender. We must confront gender stereotypes and unreasonable expectations imposed on people. It is important to listen to and encourage women, to provide them with equal opportunities, and to recognize their abilities and success. We may also speak out against discrimination and sexist jokes in order to promote a culture of respect and equality. Educating ourselves and others about feminism aids in the spread of knowledge and comprehension. We can build a society where everyone, regardless of gender, has the same rights and opportunities by working together.

The collective activism of women in several other reform movements had an impact and this wave sought to provide women more chances. As a result of the April 30,1937 amendment in the Philippines, Filipino women obtained the right to vote and be elected to office.

Feminism In HUMAN RIGHTS

Feminism as a Human Rights Movement:

Feminism is intrinsically linked to the principles of human rights, which recognize the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, irrespective of their gender. By addressing the specific challenges faced by women, feminism seeks to ensure that women can exercise their human rights fully and equally. The feminist movement strives to dismantle the patriarchal structures and societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality, enabling women to access their fundamental human rights, such as education, healthcare, and freedom from violence.

Feminism is a social and political movement that advocates for equal rights and opportunities for women, challenging and dismantling gender-based inequalities and discrimination. At its core, feminism seeks to address the systemic oppression and marginalization that women have historically faced in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and politics. This article explores the intersection of feminism and human rights, highlighting the ways in which feminism has contributed to advancing women's rights and promoting gender equality on a global scale.

Addressing Violence Against Women :

Feminism has been instrumental in raising awareness and combating violence against women. Recognizing that violence is a violation of women's human rights, feminist activists have worked tirelessly to highlight the prevalence of domestic violence, sexual assault, and gender-based violence. This advocacy has led to the development of legal frameworks and support systems aimed at protecting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. The #MeToo movement, for instance, exposed the pervasive nature of sexual harassment and assault, igniting a global conversation and fostering solidarity among survivors.

The Right to Gender Equality:

One of the fundamental tenets of feminism is the pursuit of gender equality Feminist activists and scholars have played a pivotal role in advocating for the recognition of women's rights as human rights The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and subsequent international agreements, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), emphasize the importance of gender equality and the elimination of discrimination based on sex. Feminist movements have pushed for the implementation and enforcement of these agreements to ensure that women's rights are upheld globally.

Economic Empowerment and Gender Equality:

Feminism also focuses on economic empowerment as a means to achieve gender equality Women have historically faced economic disparities, including wage gaps, limited access to economic resources, and discrimination in the workplace Feminist economists and activists have campaigned for equal pay for equal work, better maternity leave policies, and increased representation of women in leadership positions. By challenging the gendered division of labor and advocating for economic opportunities for women, feminism contributes to dismantling systemic barriers and promoting.

Every woman should attain her rights like every human has. Everyone should be able to make their own decisions about their own bodies. Every woman has the right to have a sexual and reproductive life. In any concept, they must have equal access to health services. They can do what they want with their bodies as long as they are the ones who are responsible and accountable for it. They can use contraceptives and safe abortion if it is not illegal in their country. Moreover, they can decide whether, when, and with whom they desire to marry; whether they want to have a baby or not; how many they wish for; when they want it; and with whom they want to have a child. Every woman deserves to be fearless, they should not have this kind of fear in gender-based violence. They should not experience any barbarity, such as rape, and any other sexual assaults. They should not be forced to marry or have a forced pregnancy, just as with abortion and sterilization.

Sexual and Reproductive Rights:

https://politicalyouthnetworkorg/womens-rights-why-are-womens-rights-important/

In many decades, masses of women have experienced a lot of things that violate their rights as humans. From downgrading them and jailing them in the thinking that they were useless, unable to provide for her family, and all that she can do is give birth and take care of her family. For a long time, they made the women think of themselves as worthless. Now that this generation is knowledgeable enough to see what women really are, what their roles are in this society, and how they can contribute to this community. They can finally see what women truly are; they see women as powerful; women are the epitome of strength, love, sacrifice, and courage.

WORN IN ARNIS

Empowering Female Athletes

"I believe that gender should not be a barrier to pursuing one's passion for sports. Women are just as capable as men in Arnis, and we should be given equal opportunities to showcase our skills and abilities."Mary Allin Aldeguer, gold medalist in the women's nontraditional open weapon event at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Arnis, also known as Kali or Eskrima, is the national sport and martial art of the Philippines. It is a form of martial art focused on weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and different improvised weapons. It also includes techniques like hand-to-hand combat, grappling, joint locks, and weapon disarming. Arnis has a rich history in the Philippines and has played a significant role in the country's revolution against the Spaniards. In December 2009, Arnis was announced as the Philippines' official National Martial Art and Sport.

Women in the Philippines have been actively participating in Arnis, and the sport has been a source of pride for the country. The Philippine Arnis team received 14 gold medals in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The sport has also gained international recognition, and Arnis practitioners and athletes all over the country celebrated the declaration of Arnis as the national sport, stating that finally, the sport received the proper recognition that it deserved. Organizations such as the National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL), KAMAO, Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), and Arnis Philippines (ARPI) promote and encourage every Filipino to learn the sport.

Feminism in sports is a movement that advocates for gender equality in sports. It aims to eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities for women in sports. In the Philippines, Arnis is a sport that is open to both men and women However, women's participation in Arnis is still limited due to cultural and societal norms that view women as inferior to men in sports.

Despite these challenges, there are women who have excelled in Arnis and have become champions in national and international competitions. One of these women is Mary Allin Aldeguer, who won a gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. She is a testament to the fact that women can excel in Arnis and other martial arts.

The progress made in the recent years shows that gender equality in sports is making progress on the world stage, and there are numerous efforts to promote gender equality in sports at all levels. By working together to promote feminism in sports, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all athletes, regardless of gender.

Discrimination against women in sports still happens, and it is important to continue fighting for equal opportunities and fair treatment for women in sports.

gender equality in sports is about creating equal opportunities for women and men." As the Simone Biles quote above suggests, women can achieve great things in sports when given the chance.

“Bughaw para sa sipa at tyaga, pula para sa alab ng puso, at puti para sa adhikain.” Football has historically been an undervalued sport in our nation, but recent Filipina victories have sparked the desire of many Filipinos, particularly nonplayers, to watch and participate in the game, particularly the Philippine Women's National Football Team.
