President’s & Chair’s Annual Message

b

We are proud to present this Annual Report, which includes a compilation of last year’s accomplishments as well as a retrospective of our past in this unique anniversary year of the Foundation. With the support of our extremely generous fundholders, we have had a banner year. The Foundation received almost $29 million in contributions during the 2007-08 fiscal year, allowing us to distribute around $14 million to hardworking nonprofit organizations. During our first twenty-five years we have had considerable success in strengthening our community, but we cannot stop there. In many ways, Triangle Community Foundation is a work in progress. As the only general funder in the region, we must continue to increase our grant dollars each year. We must always remain a work in progress—evolving and growing as our community changes and grows, presenting us with ever new challenges and opportunities. We’d like to thank the extraordinary leadership of the Foundation, including our active and engaged Board of Directors, Foundation Leadership Council, committee members, and Jean Gordon Carter, the immediate past Chair. We must also acknowledge our top-notch staff—one of the best teams of professionals you will find. It is truly an honor for us to lead the Foundation at this time. This foundation is a very dynamic organization, much like the region we serve. We are extremely grateful for the enthusiastic support of the nonprofits with which we are privileged to work, and to our fundholders for making the Foundation what it is today. Indeed, as you will see in the following pages, we have a rich history and an active present, but we believe the greatest work of Triangle Community Foundation lies in the years yet to come.

Looking Back: 25 Years of Building Community

b

Dr. George H. Hitchings first learned about community foundations in his role as president of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Inspired by Durham’s successful campaign to become an All-America City, Hitchings assembled a steering committee in the spring of 1983 to explore the idea of establishing a community foundation. In November, this small committee called a meeting of Durham’s top 100 civic leaders, which nominated and elected a Board of Directors, giving birth to the Greater Durham Community Foundation. And the rest, as they say, is history. If we were scholars studying the evolution of the Triangle Community Foundation, we might break it down into five distinct epochs: • • • • •

The Formative Years (1983 - 1987) Growing Into The Triangle (1988 - 1993) Becoming a Catalyst for Change (1994 - 1998) Engaging the Donor as Entrepreneur (1999 - 2003) Adopting The Balanced Model (2004 - 2008)

Each phase of growth has contributed to the Foundation becoming what it is today and what it will become in the years ahead. We invite you to share our history and our journey as you enjoy our 25th anniversary annual report.

The Community Foundation is the embodiment of concern for the present and faith in the future. Arthur W. Clark, President’s Message, 1993 ANNUAL REPORT • JULY 1, 2007 - JUNE 30, 2008

The Formative Years (1983 – 1987)

The Foundation, led by part-time Executive Director Shannon St. John, was started in 1983 with an anonymous gift of $1,000—later revealed to be from Dr. Hitchings, himself—which was quickly followed by gifts of $1,000 from Burroughs Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline) and Central Carolina Bank (now Suntrust). In March of 1984, the Foundation enlisted Gifts, Grants, Funds and Assets 1994 – 1998 five founding patrons—the Junior League of Durham, Burroughs Wellcome, GTE, George Watts Hill, and Liggett & Myers $67.2 —to each provide $15,000 over the next three years to support start-up costs and operations. In 1985, the Foundation’s first full year of grantmaking, it awarded grants for scholarships, projects in the arts, human services, health, education, the environment, and historic preservation. Services were expanded into Orange County in 1986 and the Foundation moved to Research Triangle Park.

1987 proved to be a pivotal year when the Foundation secured several substantial commitments: the A.J. Fletcher Founda-($ in Millions) tion committed $120,000 over three years; Burroughs Wellcome endowed the Burroughs Wellcome Opportunity Scholarship with $500,000; and three major commitments in December tripled the Foundation’s assets in less than two weeks, allowing it to expand into Wake County. Accordingly, the name was changed to The Greater Triangle Community Foundation. Also in 1987, the Foundation, in conjunction with Durham newspapers, raised over $30,000 to send 100 children to summer camp—an initiative that would become one of the Foundation’s signature programs, Send A Kid To Camp™. 4

Becoming a Catalyst for Change (1994 – 1998) The Catalyst Project was launched by the Foundation in 1995 to increase the base of permanent local philanthropic resources in the Triangle and to encourage all kinds of permanent giving in every community of the region. At the heart of the project was the strategic effort to convey the message of philanthropy to five key groups who influence the region’s resources:

• • • • •

professional advisors entrepreneurs major public and private companies nonprofit agencies financial institutions

In her President’s message of 1998, Anne Cone Liptzin noted that terms like “social entrepreneurship” and “venture philanthropy” had begun to enter the vocabulary, signaling a shift toward philanthropy as an entrepreneurial enterprise with an emphasis on the donor/investor. Engaging the Donor as Entrepreneur (1999 - 2003) The Donor Engagement model reinterpreted the Foundation’s mission statement to focus more on increasing donor involvement and nurturing fundholders to become “strategic philanthropists.” To educate and involve donors, the Foundation launched TCF’s Continuing Philanthropic Education Series, developed Tailored Philanthropic Services, and issued Strategic Impact Grants. Philanthropy Central, dubbed the “online philanthropic marketplace,” was launched on the Foundation’s website to make philanthropy accessible to anyone in the Triangle with an Internet connection and a credit card. Fundholders were encouraged to put their efforts toward organizations and causes they truly cared about for a more satisfying, rewarding - and hopefully transformative - experience. Donor involvement became a goal, rather than a byproduct, of the grantmaking process, in an effort to help fundholders realize their dreams for a better community.

Adopting the Balanced Model (2004 – 2008)

B

By 2004, the Foundation had made grants of more than $75 million to more than 3000 nonprofit organizations, receiving donations from 10,932 people along the way. The leadership of the Foundation transitioned in 2005 from its founding president, Shannon St. John, to new president Andrea Bazán. In August of 2006, the Foundation adopted a new five-year strategic plan and moved to a balanced model that directs resources to both donors and the nonprofit community. As a way of being actively engaged and accountable to the community, the Foundation launched its Community Granting Program with focus areas of civic engagement and youth leadership and development. Monthly lunches with the Foundation’s president were initiated so that nonprofits could learn more about the organization and each other to increase collaboration and leverage resources. The Balanced Model proved to be the perfect synthesis of the Foundation’s desire to provide excellent service to its donor base and its mission to serve organizations addressing the needs of the community.

Looking Forward

b

As a community foundation, we must always remain an active participant amidst the changes in our community, so we have asked our fundholders for ideas to make the Triangle a better place in the coming years. We heard these suggestions repeatedly: support “green” in transportation, energy, food and the overall environment; help the 5200 nonprofits in the Triangle collaborate to minimize competition and focus on shared goals/concerns/issues; provide the community with a better sense of unmet needs; and be a force for regional thinking among the Triangle’s communities while still recognizing the unique qualities of each. Other innovative ideas we heard include: • Consider creation of a Nonprofit SWAT team of consultants to provide short-term intensive pro bono assistance to nonprofits in crisis. • Underwrite a Triangle-wide conference which will help area nonprofits think creatively about fundraising during trying economic times. • Invest in scholarship programs that funnel young black males to teach in public schools in exchange for receipt of a scholarship. • Build bridges between the AARP crowd and college-aged people; Age group circles would be a great way to accomplish this. • Create a concise and current summary of opportunities for fund holders to consider. As our region continues to evolve, we look forward to hearing more creative ideas from our fundholders and nonprofit partners as we consider the community we’d like to become in the years ahead.

Development Services

Helping individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits create meaningful charitable funds

Development staff is actively reaching out into the community to encourage philanthropy through the Foundation.

Triangle Community Foundation offers several types of funds to help fundholders accomplish their charitable goals:

agencies working on civic engagement and youth leadership and development.

Most donors begin their relationship with us by meeting with a member of the Development team to discuss the creation of a charitable fund. Through these conversations, Foundation staff work closely with donors to develop or solidify charitable goals and to craft the appropriate fund vehicle to meet those goals.

A donor advised fund gives fundholders the power to recommend grants to organizations important to them. It lets them be actively involved in grantmaking and recommend grants to the charitable causes they value most.

A designated fund supports a specific charitable organization or program for a set period of time or in perpetuity. If the charity goes out of business, the Foundation protects the fundholder’s interests by making grants to the organization most closely matching the original intent.

A fund can be created using the full range of current and estate gifts including cash, publicly traded and closely-held stock, real estate, gifts from bequests, trusts, and charitable beneficiary designations in an IRA or insurance policy. The Foundation works with donors and their advisors to achieve fundholders’ charitable, financial or business goals. Our Gift Planning Advisor serves the legal, accounting, tax, and financial communities as liaison to the Foundation, working to enhance the advisors’ understanding of philanthropy, educate them about the resources available through the Foundation, and provide technical assistance in structuring current or deferred gifts. The Development Officer for Corporate Outreach serves as a resource for area businesses and corporations, helping them become more involved in the region’s philanthropic activities and also become more strategic in their corporate giving.

A broad field-of-interest fund lets fundholders support causes they care about without having to choose specific organizations. The Foundation’s expert Philanthropic Services staff identifies the nonprofit organizations that most effectively accomplish the donor’s goals. An unrestricted fund lets fundholders work together to support the community’s greatest areas of need. Unrestricted funds also sustain the Foundation’s Community Grantmaking Program, which supports

An agency fund lets nonprofit organizations benefit from the Foundation’s professional endowment management and frees their staffs and boards to concentrate on their programs and mission. Agency funds include endowment funds that support organizations in perpetuity and nonendowed funds to establish cash reserves. Scholarships provide essential support to deserving students in the Triangle and beyond. The Foundation

Individuals, families, business and nonprofits can all benefit from the Foundation’s services, and there is no better place than the Foundation to leave a permanent legacy to benefit future generations in our community and beyond. Whether your goals are long-term or concentrating primarily on present needs, the staff at the Foundation is available to discuss a wide range of options to assist you.

C re a t i n g a C h a r i t a b l e F u n d Whether the donor wants to make an immediate charitable impact, leave a legacy for the community, or manage a complicated tax situation, the Foundation helps make it easier for them to fulfill their philanthropic dreams.

Field of interest and unrestricted funds provide the flexible dollars required for the Foundation to create new initiatives, to bring people together around causes they care about, and to support advocacy work for issues that affect the community. When considering your philanthropic goals and priorities, please consider the creation of an unrestricted or field of interest fund, or perhaps a direct contribution to the Foundation’s General Operating Fund or Community Grantmaking Program, which makes grants to nonprofit organizations. One measure of the strength of a foundation lies in its ability to leverage unrestricted assets. Assisting Fundholders with G ra n t m a k i n g O p p o r t u n i t i e s The Foundation’s Philanthropic Services staff assists donors in understanding their philanthropic goals and interests, and helps them achieve these goals by identifying grantmaking opportunities from the more than 5,000 nonprofits serving the Triangle.

We encourage fundholders to think through personal values, motivations and goals as well as exploring grantmaking avenues for fulfilling them. We also maintain a thorough collection of philanthropic resources for fundholders’ reference and use.

Increasingly, we see families wishing to involve their children in philanthropy and exploring ways to involve multiple generations in giving. We are happy to provide resources and training for families as they begin these conversations, and we offer educational opportunities throughout the year that further examine the importance of creating a family legacy of giving. Not surprisingly, our core service is grantmaking. We not only provide streamlined grant recommendation services

through Suggestion Central, our online grantmaking tool, but we also share information about grant opportunities and provide research and referral information on areas of particular interest to individual donors. We can also measure the impact of grants and help donors experience their funding in action with site visits and progress reports. National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Triangle Community Foundation is confirmed in Compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, the nation’s highest philanthropic standards for operational quality, integrity and accountability. The notice comes from the Council on Foundations, a national professional association based in Washington DC. “This is similar to the Good Housekeeping Seal for community foundations,” said Steve Gunderson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Council on Foundations. “It indicates that Triangle Community Foundation seeks excellence for its community and its donors and serves as a public symbol of the community foundations’ commitment to accountability, excellence and service.”

Jo i n i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f P h i l a n t h ro p i s t s In addition to our individualized donor services, the Foundation provides numerous opportunities for fundholders to come together, share their own experiences, and learn about important issues and giving opportunities in the Triangle. Quarterly, Triangle Community Foundation hosts Triangle Donors Forum for fundholders and other foundation representatives from around the region to discuss topics of interest and share funding opportunities. Our annual Fundholders Meeting brings donors together to learn about important milestones of the Foundation, as well as share Board members Rick Guirlinger (right) and Chuck Leedy at Fundholders Meeting.

information about the Foundation’s finances, investments and issues of interest. Triangle Community Foundation is a member group of several regional and national grantmaking organizations. Most notably, our membership with the North Carolina Network of Grantmakers provides all fundholders the opportunity to attend events and conferences hosted by this group. From time to time the Foundation also hosts intimate gatherings, often in conjunction with fundholders, to discuss topics or organizations that are of particular interest to a group of donors. These events are just one more way for donors to interact with each other as well as learn about the work of nonprofits in our community.

Ke e p i n g i n To u ch We offer regular communication about Foundation activities through the annual report, quarterly updates, and email reminders. Additionally, all fundholders have access to Donor Central, our online philanthropy tool, which allows donors to access their fund balance, gifts and grant history, and suggest grants online via Quarterly Update Suggestion Central.

In October 2007, Triangle Community Foundation partnered with Strowd Roses Inc., the Carolina Center for Public Service, the UNC-Chapel

Hill School of Social Work and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System to implement a three year project to address the achievement gap among elementary school students at three schools. Beginning in October, researchers from the School of Social Work are following third graders at each school, identifying needs of individual students and working with schools to develop strategies to address those needs. The project stresses school, parent and community collaboration to maximize efforts and resources. Roses Inc., a nonprofit charitable foundation dedicated to supporting the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, committed $100,000 per year for the next three years to this project and Triangle Community Foundation committed $25,000 per year for the next three years to support this work. Programs and Services to Nonprofits

Tr i a n g l e G ive s B a ck In fall of 2007, the Foundation partnered with North Carolina Public Radio® – WUNC to convene a strategic alliance of leaders to discuss the question: Is giving in the Triangle addressing our community’s most critical do good differently needs? Through the Triangle Gives Back initiative, the Foundation is leading an effort to find out, and to engage leaders and residents to invest time, talent, and treasure to improve our community in ways that make a long-term difference. This threeto-five year initiative draws attention to corporations, organizations and individuals who are giving back to the community in various ways, with a special emphasis on unsung heroes and traditionally unrecognized givers.

triangle gives back

Throughout the last year the Foundation has worked with the UNC Program on Public Life to research patterns of giving. The result of this work, Triangle Gives Back: A Report to the Region, will be published in Fall 2008. We are currently working with Capstrat, a Raleigh-based strategic communications firm, to bring the research to life through a dynamic website and social marketing campaign. Our community will be hearing much more about Triangle Gives Back in the year to come!

Triangle Community Foundation Service to Nonprofits Triangle Community Foundation leverages our roles as community leader, partner, and convener to provide additional value to our vibrant nonprofit sector. Services to area nonprofit organizations include:

L u n ch e s w i t h t h e P re s i d e n t On a monthly basis, the Foundation’s President, Andrea Bazán, hosts lunch for nonprofit leaders from across the Triangle. These gatherings are informal opportunities for participants to discuss emerging trends, share best practices and resources, and to network. Of equal importance is the fact that they have the opportunity to learn about each other while they also educate Foundation staff about their work. Throughout the last year, we’ve enjoyed lunch with more than 150 nonprofit organizations.

N o n p ro f i t C a p a c i t y B u i l d i n g Foundation staff members are often asked to meet with nonprofit staff and board members to provide guidance and advice on best practices, and we work closely with exiting nonprofits to increase their effectiveness. Based on the knowledge that our grant dollars have greater impact in strong organizations, the Foundation piloted a partnership with Executive Service Corps of the Triangle (ESC) in November 2007. ESC is a nonprofit consulting service that provides professional, affordable services to Triangle nonprofits to help them achieve their missions. These services include strategic planning, executive coaching, and board development.

The Victorian Carolers, 2007 Holiday Party for Nonprofits.

N e t wo r k i n g Initiated in 2006, the Foundation continued our tradition of hosting an Annual Holiday Party for Nonprofit Leaders and Friends. In December 2007, nonprofit leaders, foundation colleagues, and fundholders gathered at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to celebrate the end of a successful year, ring in the holiday season, and have fun! As admission to the party, guests donated hundreds of canned goods to help stock the shelves of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Tra i n i n g In October 2007, the Foundation brought together nonprofit and foundation leaders for Civic Engagement and Technology: Connecting People, Information and Causes in an Online Era. This one-day workshop focused on Web 2.0 technologies and allowed participants to explore how new technology is changing communication, transforming networking and strengthening coalition-building.

The George H. Hitchings Society Building a legacy for generations to come

Dr. Hitchings, the Founder of Triangle Community Foundation and Nobel Laureate in Medicine, was a remarkable man whose philosophy was that “service to mankind, broadly or individually, is the greatest fulfillment in life.” In 1994, in association with its tenth anniversary, the Foundation created the George H. Hitchings Society to recognize donors who have made a commitment to the community through wills or trusts. In addition to creating a living memorial, individuals who have donated deferred gifts set an example for others, who may not realize that they also have the capability to give something back to the community through their estate plans. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges the following Hitching Society members, who have collectively committed more than $100 million in future charitable gifts. Their generosity will make a difference in the life of our communities for generations to come. 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Fiscal Year

Triangle Community Foundation carefully manages longterm philanthropic funds primarily for the benefit of Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties in North Carolina. During our 25 years of existence, the Foundation’s assets have grown from an initial contribution of $1,000 to more than $137 million and comprising over 700 funds. Over $83 million of Foundation assets are in endowment funds. The remaining portion of assets is held in non-endowed funds that can be partially or fully expended. During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, contributions increased by over 44% while grantmaking increased to an all-time high of $14.0 million.

The Foundation’s goal is to earn a reasonable return on its investments while maintaining a diversified, high-quality portfolio without undue risk of significant capital depreciation. Its investment policy, established and periodically reviewed by the Finance Committee, utilizes prudent investment strategies tailored to the unique needs of its charitable funds. It is designed to result in growth sufficient to maintain the real value of a fund’s principal balance and grantmaking capability over time. This is accomplished through carefully balanced portfolios of both equity and fixed-income securities and through the Foundation’s total return spending policy.

The stewardship of the Foundation’s funds is a critical responsibility of the Board of Directors. The Foundation’s Finance Committee, appointed by and reporting to the Board of Directors, has immediate oversight of all aspects of the Foundation’s financial management. This committee is comprised of Board members with specific experience and expertise in financial and operations management.

During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the TCF Board established an Investment Committee comprised of highly qualified investment and financial professionals. The Committee’s first task was to identify the best qualified, independent investment consultant to advise the Foundation on issues related to the Foundation’s investments. Colonial Consulting, LLC, a New York City firm, was recommended

0

2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Fiscal Year

by the Investment Committee from a pool of eighteen applicants and was unanimously approved by the Foundation’s Finance Committee. During the upcoming 2008-2009 fiscal year, Colonial will advise us as to the asset classes and asset managers that will best allow us to balance risk with return. Currently, the Foundation allows fundholders to recommend portfolios from among four specific asset allocation models, offering a range of exposures to equity and fixed income investments, each deemed prudent by the Foundation’s Finance Committee. At the close of this fiscal year, for funds not otherwise recommended by donors, the Foundation followed a targeted asset allocation model of 65% equity securities and 35% fixed income securities. As stewards of the community’s funds, the Investment Committee will continue to recommend prudent and active management of the monies generously contributed by the fundholders for greater impact on the community.
