CUL HerStory

Page 1

Dear Friends,

I’m delighted that our Columbus Urban League has launched a HerStory event and annual publication that celebrates some of our most talented and high potential Black women. HerStory fills a long empty void. Black women have been “under-noticed” and “over-expected” for centuries – meaning no one records our accomplishments, while everyone thinks we should take care of the world.

It’s far past time for a change.

I’m so proud that the women featured in these pages share a collective commitment to each other. We understand that no one shines until we all have a chance at the spotlight. Our rising tide must lift up those still trapped by poverty, worn down by racism and fed up with inequity.

Starting now, HISTORY will include HERSTORY too.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Hightower

THINKING DIFFERENT BE CREATIVE

My passion for workforce development grew out of a stint of joblessness I experienced, in which I obsessively combed over not only why I wasn’t employed, but what tools and resources I needed to have in order to become employed. Being able to share those tools and resources with our citizens is at the crux of what I do today.

I believe finding a job ( with a livable wage), is one crucial step to economic mobility, and finding a CAREER is the additional step to happiness. Both are essential to the advancement of Black people, and that work is what drives me and my strong, impassioned team.

These words are the call to action at the heart of Columbus Urban League’s 2022 Herstory Maker’s Celebration. Women are growing in representation, influence, and power, using their unique gifts in extraordinary ways that benefit our community, exemplifying excellence, crossing new thresholds, and holding the door open for talented future leaders. Honoring those who dared to cross new thresholds and then intentionally held the door for those who followed. Recognizing these women provides support for women’s equity and excellence. As well, proceeds from this event strengthen core programs and services of your Columbus Urban League that support many women and families across our community.

Thank you for celebrating with us!
