OUR PURPOSE & MISSION The Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Washington, DC and Vicinity (ICUA) was organized in 1912 for the purpose of fostering a closer fellowship and to promote a unified method of ushering. The Association is completely void of any denominational barriers and is dedicated to promoting service in Christian, social, and moral activities as ushers. In essence, the Association is to promote “Church Ushering” as a “Ministry.”

We believe that the mission of the Church is to lead all mankind to Christ and that the Church Usher has a very definite part to play in the accomplishment of the Church’s mission as God’s representatives on earth.

So much can be accomplished through organized efforts; thus, we can’t see any just reason why all Church Ushers should not be joined together in one great Association working for the betterment of a common cause.

History of The Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc. FOUNDATION AND PRESIDENCY (1912 – 2018) In 1912, Brother John W. Evans of Zion Baptist Church issued a call and invitation to the Usher Boards of D.C. and vicinity to meet with his group for organizing an Ushers’ Union.

The committee met at the Zion Baptist Church located then on “F” Street, SW between 3 rd and 4th Streets. The late Rev. William J. Howard was the Pastor. Until his death, Rev. Howard was one of the most staunch and ardent ministerial supporters.

At the first meeting, a total of approximately 200 ushers laid the groundwork for the organization. The purpose was to create, foster, and maintain a uniformed method of church ushering, and to bring among the ushers of the District a closer spiritual, friendly, and common social bond, wherein all might be helped.

Brother John Evans was elected President and Brother William H. Davis was elected Secretary. Thus, this organization was born. It adopted the name of the Interdenominational Ushers Union of D.C. and Vicinity. The membership was to be completely free of any denominational barriers and requiring only that Boards seeking admittance be in good standing from a regular church.

Upon this basis, the organization set about seeking new members and spreading the gospel of “Christian Church Ushers Unity.” After one year, Brother Evans relinquished the Presidency to Brother John Martin of Metropolitan Baptist Church who also served for one year.

Brother Charles Harris of Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church succeeded Brother John Martin. During this period, progress was very slow and almost discouraging at times, as the group met with increasing opposition from unexpected sources. However, believing that ours was a Godly inspired organization, and depending upon God for guidance, wisdom, and strength, the group struggled on. Bro. Harris served one year.

Brother William H. Davis of Zion Baptist Church succeeded Brother Charles Harris.

Brother Davis served the organization for several years, and under his leadership, the body seemed to prosper and flourish. During Brother Davis’ first term, the Ladies Auxiliary was formed under the leadership of Sis. Josephine Bealle of Galbraith A.M.E. Zion Church. We were known then as, “The Interdenominational Ushers Union and Ladies Auxiliary of D.C. and Vicinity.” Subsequently, it was incorporated. Struggling and striving through the years, but always growing under God’s divine guidance, various units and departments were added, thereby making for new and greater interests among the membership.

Brother Thaddeus Chase of Galbraith A.M.E. Zion Church was elected president. He served for several years and his work was outstanding. He succeeded in strengthening the walls of the building through his sincerity and devotion to the office. The organization formulated teams to demonstrate ushering at meetings. A financial system between church and ii

the organization was adopted. A “Look out Committee” was organized to solicit new members and the organization grew. Brother Chase was the first delegate to organize a national body and Brother William H. Davis was the second delegate. Brother John Robinson and Brother Thomas Carter were charter members of the national body. Brother Chase was elected as the first secretary of the National.

Under Brother Chase’s administration, Sister Mary M. Johnson and Sister Jennie Hyder served as Vice Presidents and Sister Jessie Burnett, Recording Secretary. Correspondence secretaries were Sister Minnie Minor, Zion A.M.E.; Sister Matilda Harris, Macedonia Baptist Church; and Sister Mary Johnson, Vermont Avenue Baptist Church. Brother Thomas Carter was Sergeant-At-Arms and Brother George Clarke of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church was Chaplain. Sister Josephine Gill was the person responsible for notifying the local body of Brother Hamilton’s plan to form a national usher’s body. The ICUA grew to 1,082 members and a plan was established whereby notices were sent to the churches noting the dates for sermons and where they would be held.

Brother Michael Lewis of the Liberty Baptist Church followed Brother Chase as President.

For two years he worked ardently, but failing health caused him to relinquish his office.

Brother William H. Davis was again called to head the organization. He was given full support of the loyal Christian workers for they saw in him an opportunity to help in Kingdom building. In 1927, a memorable year, a new unit was added, namely the Ushers Chorus. This group has won and merited much acclaim in the musical world and has rendered service from coast to coast. Under Brother Davis, we began the annual exchange of visits with the Maryland organization on the occasion of their Memorial Service. After having served for a quarter of a century or more as President, Brother Davis was called from labor to reward in November 1948.

In 1949, Sister Alma Cooper Hawkins of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church was the next and first female President of the Organization. With her inspired intelligence, the architectural plans of Brother Davis, and God’s leadership, the organization began a steady march to greater heights. The President’s Officers Council was initiated in 1949. There was a need for officers and Board Presidents to meet at regular intervals to discuss problems and to devise ways and means to better serve the interests of the membership.

A credit union was organized and the membership was able to save as well as borrow from this intricate part of our organization. We have been host to the national body on three occasions, the last in 2001. The 1992 convention was said to have been the finest and best convention in the history of the National United Church Ushers Association of America.

During Sis. Hawkins administration, the Ushers Headquarters was purchased and is located at 1923 16th Street, N.W. Sis. Hawkins was the Correspondence Secretary of the National under President William H. Davis. She was the organizer and Past Chairman and Chairman Emeritus of the Public Relations Committee and Secretary of the R.E. Harshaw Scholarship Committee. Sis. Hawkins served greatly and made many great accomplishments.

Brother Raymond Leroy Gray, Sr. succeeded Sister Hawkins. He was scholarly, articulate and an outstanding leader who led our organization with a firm and steady hand. Under his iii

leadership, our organization continued to prosper. He also served as National Parliamentarian.

The title of Honorary President of the ICUA of D.C. was bestowed upon Brother Gray.

Sister Nettie V. Martin of Rock Creek Baptist Church was next in the presidential succession. She was an innovator of many successful programs. Sister Martin also had the distinction of being Honorary President of our organization. She was the Past Eastern Regional Director and Past National Second Vice President.

Sister Mabel R. Milton of Israel Baptist Church succeeded Sister Martin. She rose steadily through the ranks before becoming the Association’s third lady President. Sister Milton is also an Honorary President of our organization.

Sister Christine E. Ford of Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church succeeded Sister Milton and became the Association’s fourth lady President. She had previously worked on many committees and held the position of Vice President in President Milton’s administration. Sister Ford was creative in honoring faithful and loyal ICUA members and was also an innovator of many successful programs. In 1994 she established the Building Fund Working Unit and the Unit continues to work. The title of Honorary President was conferred upon Sister Ford after her tenure was completed.

Sister Vivian V. Smith of Friendship Baptist Church succeeded Sis. Ford as President.

Among the many positions she held, Sister Smith served as Recording Secretary and Vice President in Sister Ford’s administration. She has been a loyal, hardworking, and a diligent member of the association for many years.

Brother Charles J. Brown of Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Church succeeded Sister Smith as President. Brother Brown served as Vice President under Sis. Smith’s administration.

Brother Brown’s dedication, patience, and perseverance along with a strong drive and desire for community involvement served as the cornerstone of his administration. President Brown’s theme was “Ushers Empowered by the Holy Spirit” with scripture text based on Philippians 4:13.

In January 2005, Sister Sarah A. Crawley of Walker Memorial Baptist Church was officially installed as the President. She served as Vice President under Brother Brown. Sister Crawley knows that God has blessed us to see another year with new mercies each day. With perseverance, enthusiasm, and determination, many of our goals and activities were successful beyond our expectations; therefore we give God “TOTAL PRAISE” for all of our accomplishments.

In January 2009, Brother George J. Irick of Greater New Hope Baptist Church was officially installed as President of this great ICUA of Washington, DC, and Vicinity, Inc. Mr. Irick took the reins with great expectation. The theme chosen for the year is Anointed Doorkeepers and our motto is “Anointed Doorkeepers making a Difference.”

In January 2013, Brother Darrell W. Johnson of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church was installed as President of the ICUA of Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc. after being elected in December 2012. He chose the theme “Anchored and Committed” for his administration based on the scripture 1st Corinthians 15:58. He set forth various goals and held an Officers Retreat and his desire is that we all work together to accomplish the goals that were set forth. iv

In January 2017, Sister Pansy Bradley-Cooper of Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church was installed as President of the ICUA of Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc, after being elected in December 2016. President Bradley-Cooper chose the theme “The Power of Love and Unity.”

As servants (Ushers) of God, we must stay focused on His Word. This commitment is accomplished by the many Sermons, Revivals, Prayer Breakfasts, Memorial Services, and other Activities/Events supported by the ICUA at the local, regional and national levels.

Sermon tracts of all activities can be obtained from the Events Department. (Events Director is listed herein.)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS In 1988, in an effort to obtain tax-exempt status and to have an effective and efficient organization, the association undertook the enormous task of reorganization. As Chairman of the Board of Trustee, the late Donald E. Bryant of Friendship Baptist Church had the awesome responsibility to spearhead the tremendous task. He led the Board and other ICUA officials through the rugged trail of bureaucratic red tape and legalities. Because of his excellent leadership capabilities, his dedication and his perseverance, the ICUA of Washington, D.C. and Vicinity, Incorporated received both D.C. and Federal tax-exempt status in 1990. Sis. Alfreda Davis of Friendship Baptist Church provided invaluable legal assistance in the achievement of our tax-exempt status.

The many committees that existed were streamlined into eight departments: (1) Budget and Finance; (2) Education and Scholarship; (3) Events; (4) Membership Services and Outreach; (5) Policy and Rules; (6) Alma Cooper Hawkins Public Relations; (7) Young Adults; and (8) Junior and Young People’s. Please see department structure pages for the mission statement and purpose of each department.

Scholarships – To young people who desire to further their education. Additional scholarship awards can be obtained through competition at the Regional and National Levels of the National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc. (NUCUAA).

• Book Grants to Enrolled Students Donations As a religious corporation, striving to do the work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, our Association has contributed to national worthy organizations, such as the United Negro College fund. On the local level, we support organizations that help families to obtain and maintain a healthy and productive life by giving to the House of Ruth and the Whitman Walker Clinic.

In 1994 the ICUA made a monetary contribution to the Keon Banks Bone Marrow Fund. At the time of our gift Keon of Walker Memorial Baptist Church was in remission from leukemia, He has since gone on to glory. The ICUA was proud to have contributed to Keon’s fund.

In 1995, the Association gave monetary gifts to two worthwhile charitable groups, the Afrov

American Bone Marrow Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

In 1996, we were blessed to have contributed to two deserving charities: • The Lynette Bell Organ Donor and Transplant Fund. Lynette, a member of Zion Baptist Church, NW, is a young lady with severe diabetes who was in need of a kidney and pancreas transplant.

• The NAACP, an organization that has stood strong for civil rights throughout the years.

• The ICUA of Washington, DC and Vicinity Inc. hosted the 55th Eastern Region Conference for the first time on March 16-17, 2012. It was a historical occasion because we also celebrated our 100th Memorial weekend as well. The tremendous support given by the Eastern Region States was truly remarkable. Under the dynamic leadership of President George J. Irick and with God’s grace the weekend celebration was a great success.

The years 2001 through 2004 were banner years for our Lord. Under President Brown’s leadership, the Association increased its community involvements and efforts.

2001-2004 Donations • WOL Radio One Relief Fund for the September 11th victims’ families • A motorized wheelchair for a needy individual in the community • Association’s Shoe Drive for students • American Cancer Society (Breast Cancer Research) • Coloring books crayons, and UNO cards, and teddy bears to Children’s Medical Center and Howard University’s Border Babies and Children Department • Brand new clothing, tricycles, strollers and stuffed animals to the Howard University’s Border Babies and Children’s Department • Blankets to the homeless shelters and toiletries to Senior Citizen Homes Community Service • Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets to needy families • Christmas in April Project (Renovation of homes in the District of Columbia) • Shoes to District of Columbia and Maryland (Prince George’s County) Elementary Schools • Computer Lab at ICUA HQ for Community and members • Project Literacy – Eradicating illiteracy in the Community • Voters’ Registration Drives in District of Columbia and Maryland (Prince George’s County) • Workshops (Preparing a Living Will, a Last Will, and Testament, and a Last Will and Testament -- Finalizing Documents Accolades • Celebrated 90 years with a Gala Black Tie Affair that denoted the unveiling of the ICUA IMAGE Awards to community and civil leaders as well as the Residential Awards (Medallion) given to members. Over 800 people were in attendance.

• Celebrated 91 years with a Prayer Breakfast honoring community leaders and ICUA members with the ICUA IMAGE Awards and Presidential Awards, respectively. vi

Celebrated 92 years with a Prayer Breakfast “Saluting Our Past Presidents”. Past Presidents Gray, Martin, Milton, Ford and Smith were honored along with several members with the Presidential Award (Medallion) Provided membership subscription drives in support of Afro-American Newspaper.

Opened “ICUA Store” in an effort to be more economically self-sufficient, Usher gloves were initially sold.

By giving Total Praises to God and relying on His strength, President Sarah A. Crawley continued and expanded the commitment of the Association throughout her tenure..

Year 2006 continued • Men and Women’s Day was held at Beulah Baptist Church on December 3rd. The recipients of the awards were Man of the Year-Brother Ulysses Sherman Price and Woman of the Year-Sister Mary Freeman.

• Junior and Young People’s Department honored the ICUA Father, Elder Charles Oliver and Christie Cooper at their 80th Anniversary on December 9th at Martin’s Crosswinds, Greenbelt, MD Year 2007 • The 95th ICUA Anniversary was held on September 22nd at The Bolling Clubs, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, DC. Guest artists on the program were the L. A. Family Singers • The Ten Commandments Tea was held at Macedonia Community Church on October 13, 2007. The Winners at the Tea were: 1st Place-First CommandmentSpeaker: Hazel Blakey, Trinity AME Zion; 2nd Place-Eighth CommandmentSpeaker: Summer K.L. Gray, Greater People’s Union Baptist Church; and 3rd Place-Second Commandment-Speaker: Dorothy J. Thomas, Walker Memorial Baptist Church • Men and Women’s Day was held on December 2, 2007 at Imani Temple on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. The award recipients were: Usher Vernard Jackson, Arthur E. Anderson Man of the Year 2007 and Ushers Jeanette S. Riddick and Phyllis P. Dorsey, co-recipients of the Alma Cooper Hawkins’ Woman of the Year Awards for 2007 Year 2008 • The Alma Cooper Hawkins Public Relations Department presented its 2nd GoldenAge Luncheon on July 12, 2008 at Israel Baptist Church. The following persons were honored: Eloise E. Alston (Vermont Avenue Baptist); Paris R. Anderson (Jones Memorial UM Church); Annie B. Bailey (First Baptist Deanwood); Alphonso Bell (Liberty Baptist); William Bolden (Miles Memorial CME Church); George Gray (Mount Pleasant Baptist); Robert Johnson (Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church); Edmonia Lovett (Galbraith AME Zion Church); June D. Year 2009 • Winners at our 90th National Convention in July 2009: 1st Place for our Senior Floor and Drill Team Demonstration. Sister Cynthia Green brought home the Queen’s Crown.

• Men and Women’s Day Program (100 Men in Black and 100 Women in White) was held at Ward Memorial A.M.E. Church on December 6th. The Special Guest Recording Artists were “The Kings Men.” Award recipients were Dean Dwight D. Williams, Sr!-Archie A. Anderson Man of the Year and Sister Christine P. GrayAlma C. Riddick • ICUA sponsored a Michael McCorkle Stage Play “HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS” (Never Forget Where You Come From) at The Atlas Performing Arts Center on September 11th • ICUA’s First Combined Anniversary of the Senior Department (98 years), Young Adult Department (42 years), and Junior and Young People’s Department (84 years) was held at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on September 19th • Men and Women’s Day was held at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Temple Hills, MD on December 5th Award recipients were Brother Darrrell W. • The ICUA of Washington, DC and Vicinity Inc. hosted for the first time the 55th Eastern Region Conference on March 16-17, 2012. It was a historical occasion because we also celebrated our 100th Memorial weekend as well. The 100th Memorial Service on held on March 18, 2012 at Turner Memorial AME Church, Hyattsville, MD Year 2012 • Women’s Day Committee Christian Comedy Show was held on August 25th at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church Baptist, Upper Marlboro, MD • Celebrated 100 years (Centennial) Anniversary in the month of September 2012. A fundraiser play, “All The Man I Need” was held on September 8th at the Atlas Performing Arts Theatre, Washington, DC. A Centennial Banquet was held on September 15th at the Camelot by Martins, Upper Marlboro, MD. The celebration x

concluded with a service on September 16th at Maple Springs, Baptist Church, Capital Heights, MD Year 2013 • Appointed Officers Retreat was held on February 1st -2nd for all elected and appointed officers The Retreat was well attended with officers as well as Spiritual Advisor, Reverend Mary Brown Oliver, Honorary Trustee Rev. Keith W. Byrd, Sr., Dr. Linda Smallwood, Christie Cooper, and our own Third National Vice President and Eastern Region Director Charles J. Brown, who served as facilitators.

• Attended the 56th Eastern Region Conference in February 2013 in Essington, PA. The honorees were – Sister Katie Claude (Delaware), our own Sister Mary J. Tinnen (DC), Deacon James Hope (Delaware), and Brother Lawrence A. Wright (Virginia). All were honored for their commitment and outstanding service rendered to their church, community, state and Eastern Region • ICUA was represented by officers and members in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (largest 5K run/walk event) on May 11th • Celebrated Combined Anniversary at Zion Baptist Church on September 15th as follows: Senior Department 101 years; Young Adult Department 45 years and the Junior and Young People’s Department 87 years. The second part of the Anniversary was a play, “What Is Your Testimony?” held on November 23rd at the National 4H Youth Center, Chevy Chase, MD Year 2014 • Vice President Pansy Bradley-Cooper and Vice Chairman Phyllis Dorsey participated on WOL on the “Mo Better Man Show” honoring our Catherine E. Mills School of Ushering and the ICUA in January 2014 • Second Annual Officers Retreat was held on January 24th -25th at the 4-H National Youth Center for all newly elected and appointed officers • Attended in the Eastern Region Conference and Prayer Breakfast in Arlington, Virginia on April 5th. The honorees were our own Vice President Pansy BradleyCooper, Brother James Young (MA), Sister Linda Prince-Roberts (NY) and Sister Gloria Greenhow (VA) • Winners at our 95th National Convention in July 2014: 1st Place for our Senior Floor Demonstration, 2nd place for our Senior Drill Team, 1st place for our Young Adult Team, 2nd place for the Oratorical Contest. Sister Geraldine Washington, First Baptist Church Randolph won 1st place in the King and Queen Contest • Senior Department celebrated 102 Years of Service; Young Adults 46 years and Junior and Young People’s Department 88 years praised him in “Song and Dance” on September 21st 2014 at Maple Springs Baptist Church, Capitol Heights, MD guests on the program were – The Jubilee Majestics Concert, The Women’s Ecumenical Choir of Virginia, Israel Baptist Church Male Chorus, Marvin Hodge STYLE Dance Ministry and The Shekinah Glory Dance Ministry • 2014 Young Adult Department, Leroy Johnson Tag Day presented presentation from Officers with Testimonies relating to becoming a doorkeeper, joining the ICUA of DC and Vicinity, deciding to become an instructor and attending the Catherine E. Men and Women’s Day Committees presented their 1st Afternoon of Smooth Jazz, held at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD., on December 6th. The event was highlighted with the award presentations: Archie A. Anderson Man of the Year 2014-Steve Thomas; Alma Cooper Hawkins Woman of the Year 2014-Martha Faulkner; and Guardian of the Year 2014-Mae Frances Frazier. The recipients of the Presidential Recognition Awards were: Juanita Prophet, Jeanette Riddick, Jacqueline Byrd-Tillman, Melanie Lowery, and Joseph Durbin Implementation of Quick Books in 2014 to enable Association to get timely financial reports and ensure financial accountability

Year 2015 • Attended the 58th Annual Eastern Region Conference and Connecticut Memorial Service in Hartford, CT in February 2015. The honoree at the 58th Annual Eastern Region Conference Prayer Breakfast was our very own Vice Chairman, Board of Trustee, Phyllis P. Dorsey • Elijah A. Hamilton/William H Davis National Day 2015 was held at Randall Memorial United Methodist Church and the award recipients were Melinda Wilkins and William Bolden • 2015 Re-Dedication Service was held at Greater New St. Paul Baptist Church on April 11th • On May 2nd our Young Adults participated in the “Race for the Cure” that was held on the National Mall • The Baptist Convention of the District of Columbia hosts the Annual City-Wide Revival, on Tuesday through Friday, May 19th - 22nd at Central Baptist Church of Camp Springs, Temple Hills, MD • On June 13th Young Adults held their Forum at the ICUA Headquarters and it was titled “Black and Blue: Healing Wounds Between Police and Citizens Year 2016 • On April 17th Elijah A. Hamilton/William H Davis National Day was held at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and the award recipients were Clarice Allen, Dorothy J. Thomas, Ulysses Sherman Price, Jessie Hairston and Dwight William, Sr! • ICUA Ushers celebrated their Senior 104th, Young Adults 48th and Junior and Young People’s 90th Anniversary on Sunday, September 18th at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and our guest preacher was Minister Anthony L. Holmes, Sr., from the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square Church.

• Our election of officers was held in December with the outcome of Vice President Pansy Bradley-Cooper becoming our new 2017-2020 President and Brenda Gilliam elected as our Vice President. We also elected Young Adult President Karisse A. Carmack and Junior and Young People’s President Vashone Muse. The installation of Officers was held at Macedonia Community Church. The Presidential addresses were given at Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Church located in District Heights, MD.

In January 2017, President Bradley-Cooper held her very first “Vision Planning Meeting which was entitled “Write the Vision and Make it Plain” which came out of Habakkuk 2:3 Education and Scholarship Department hosted the “Essay” Education Contest, which consisted of three young men as contestants On March 26th we celebrated Elijah A. Hamilton/William H. Davis National Day at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. The following persons were recognized for their great work to the organization: Sisters Onetia J. Evans and Courtney Nelson.

On April 16th President Pansy Bradley-Cooper and Board Chairman Ronald Jones appeared on Radio Station WYCB to highlight the ICUA of Washington, DC & Vicinity, Inc. and Catherine E. Mills School of Ushering.

At our Business Meeting on May 8th, the Young Adult Department had a representative from My Sister’s Place to do a presentation on Domestic Violence.

We presented the representative gift cards totaling $575.00 to help families in the program.

On June 2nd the ICUA held its very first “Workshop on Domestic Issues and Elder Care,” which was held at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Temple Hills, Maryland.

On September 23rd we celebrated the 105th Anniversary of the ICUA with a SemiFormal Banquet at Camelot By Martin’s in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. At this celebration. We honored our Immediate Past Presidents: Senior President Darrell W. Johnson, Young Adult President Christie C. Cooper, and Junior President London A. Lampkin. The Theme was “Celebrating 105 Years of God’s Faithfulness: Yesterday – Today – Forever.”

On October 21st ICUA sponsored a “High Tea and Fashion Show Event” at Guildfield Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In December our Membership Services and Outreach Department donated a total of 177 coats to four schools and three shelters On Saturday, December 16, 2017, the Young Adult Department volunteered to lay Christmas wreathes at Arlington National Cemetery.

Year 2018 • On January 15th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the ICUA Ushers served at the Missionary Baptist Ministers Conference of Washington, DC & Vicinity’s observance at the Sheraton Hotel in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Howard University Gospel Choir was featured at the event.

• ICUA of Washington, DC & Vicinity, Inc. hosted the 61st Eastern Region Conference – in conjunction with the 106th ICUA Memorial Weekend on March 1617, 2018 at the Hilton Washington, DC/Rockville Hotel in Rockville, MD. The Johnnie Knighton Prayer Breakfast was held at 8:00 AM honoring three of our own honorees – Honorary President George J. Irick – Trustee Sandi Dotson – and Ulysses Sherman Price. On Saturday, March 17th, the ICUA of the District of Columbia and Vicinity Malcolm J. Taylor Pre-Memorial Concert was held at 7:00 PM. The guest Artist was the “Bowie State Memorial Musical Choir.” On Sunday, March 18, the Memorial Service began at 2:30 PM. Both services was xiii

held at Zion Baptist Church, Washington, DC. Host Pastor - Rev. Dr. Keith W. Byrd, Sr. • On April 14th ICUA sponsored a Beginners Excel Workshop for the membership at ICUA Headquarters • The Macedonia Community Church held a “Hallelujah Convocation” during the week of April 22nd - April 27th. Our Junior and Young People’s Department served as Doorkeepers for the opening service on Sunday, April 22, 2018.

• On May 19th we held an Effective Communication Workshop for the membership at the ICUA Headquarters.

• On June 9th we held a Workshop for the membership on “Preparing For Unexpected Funerals” at Macedonia Community Church.

• July 9th ICUA made a financial donation of $550.00 to SOME – So Others Might Eat. Also, in July we presented $1,000 Scholarships to two deserving high school Seniors, who were winners of the Alfred E. Smith Essay Contest.

• 99th National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc. Convention was held in Bloomington, Minnesota the week of July 23rd - July 28th. DC’s Senior Floor Demonstration Team won 1st Place and the Senior Drill Competition Team won 2nd Place. Queen Anna Rowe, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was crowned 1st Place. Young Adult Department – Queen Christie C. Cooper, First Baptist Church of Glenarden, was crowned 1st Place. Junior and Young People’s Department – King Michael Roberson from Mt. Moriah Baptist Church – who was unable to attend the Convention – placed 2nd in the “Vicie Juran Flower Garden Pageant.”

Representing King Roberson at the Convention was Vondell Livingston from St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.

• On September 15th, we honored the Pastors of the ICUA member churches with a Fellowship Luncheon. The Pastors were presented a love gift. The highlight of the Pastors’ Appreciation Fellowship was the “Marching Competition” between our member churches. Pastor’s and members of the Ministerial Staff were members of the Marching Competition Teams. The results of the “Marching Competition” was Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church won 1st Place – Gold Medallion; First Baptist Church of Highland Park won 2nd Place – Silver Medallion; Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Church won 3rd Place – Bronze Medallion and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church won the Honorable Mention Ribbon • On September 16th we celebrated the 106th Anniversary of the ICUA, 50th Anniversary of the Young Adult Department, and 92nd Anniversary of the Junior and Young People’s Department at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Capital Heights, Maryland. The theme was “Users United in Speech, Service, and Spirit.

Sister Helon Smith and Brother Dwight D. Williams, Sr.! received the ICUA Guardian of the Year Award. Presidential Awards were presented to Rev. Keith W. Byrd, Sr. – Elder Alfred H. McCain, Sr. – Rev. Charles B. Carroll – Dr. Patricia McCrimmon – Mary Samuel – Jean Jalloh – Donna Irick – Juanita Prophet and Frances S. Penn.

• On October 8th ICUA donated $1,350.00 to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

• On November 18th – The Young Adult Department celebrated their 50th Anniversary in observance of Leroy Johnson Tag Day at Macedonia Community Church. The theme was “Young, Gifted and Highly Favored Celebrating 50 Years of Faithfulness.”

Also in November we donated 104 winter coats to 4 Elementary Schools in Washington, DC. xiv

On December 2nd we celebrated the Randy L. Perrin Men’s Day Committee and the Christine M. Green Women’s Day Committee Annual Celebration at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Temple Hills, Maryland. The Alma Cooper Hawkins Woman of the Year Award was presented to Honorary President Christine E. Ford and the Archie Anderson Man of the Year Award was presented to Honorary President Darrell W. Johnson.

On December 10th – As part of our Alumni Outreach Project we donated $700.00 to “Bread for the City Foundation.

December 22nd – Our Christmas Outreach Project spearheaded by the Education and Scholarship Department Alumni Working Unit was to bless a family in need. The family selected was a father with 8-year old triplet boys. The triplets are Junior Ushers at Guildfield Baptist Church in NW, Washington, DC. Each received a suit, belt, shoes, shirts, tie and bow ties as their ushering attire along with skate boards, basketball, coats, jackets, a bike and many other special gifts from their Wish List.

Our growth has been continuous through the years and God has protected and guided us.

Today, we enjoy the respect, love, and admiration of the entire city, and we stand as one of the outstanding Christian organizations in the DC metropolitan area and throughout the country. In 1984, the Washington Informer awarded our Association an Outstanding Award for its Community Service.

We are grateful to God for blessing us with continued excellent leadership, efficient officers, and devoted members, who work together, loyally, persistently, and diligently to continue the history of this great organization.

March 2019 Greetings Fellow Ushers, As I begin my 3rd Year as President of the Interdenominational Church Ushers’ Association {ICUA} of Washington, DC & Vicinity, Inc. I thank God for His Guidance, Grace, and Mercy for a successful and productive tenure as President! We were able to accomplish many activities, events, and Outreach Projects in 2018. One of the highlights of 2018 was the Pastors’ Appreciation Fellowship Luncheon held at Macedonia Community Church.

I have decided to continue to use the theme “The Power of Love and Unity” because I know as one unified body, we can accomplish much. We must continue to embrace the Mission and Purpose of the ICUA. My number one goal for the past two years was to increase communication throughout the ICUA by disseminating timely correspondence from the local, Region, and National levels to the membership. My number one goal for this year is to continue to increase communication throughout the ICUA. This document – the ICUA Workbook – is a valuable resource for all of our members. It contains helpful information that you may need from time-totime on the three Departments {Senior, Young Adult, and Junior and Young People}. It also contains information on who to contact in the case of a deceased Usher; a program outline for preparing for a Sermon; and a membership listing of member churches, Pastors, Guardians, and Usher Ministry Presidents.

As we work together in “Love and Unity,” let’s support the activities of the ICUA and assist where needed to make this Organization of Church Ushers, the best that it can be for the Lord.

Young Adult Department History The Young Adult Department was organized in 1968 under the presidency of Alma Cooper Hawkins. Since that time the department’s presidential positions have been held by: Earl Jefferson (St. Phillips Baptist) Frieda Y. Alston (Union Temple Baptist) Linda Smallwood (First Baptist-Randolph) George Moment, Jr. (Freedom Baptist) Renee Rousey (Mt. Moriah Baptist) Derek Lawson (Turner Memorial AME) Donna McRae Daily (Friendship Baptist) Cynthia Brown (Mt. Sinai Baptist) Minister Bruce D. Hasty, Sr. (Mt. Moriah Baptist) Roslyn Moore (Canaan Baptist) Connie E. Hemsley (Mt. Bethel Baptist) E. Bobby Williams (Galilee Baptist and Leslie A. Rogers (Mt. Bethel Baptist) Dimitri Harris (Friendship Baptist) Christie C. Cooper (Miles Memorial CME) ACCOMPLISHMENTS The department over the years has sponsored dinners, annual Christmas projects, delivered fruit baskets to D.C. Village, Laurel Children’s Hospital.

In 1984, the department’s first drill team was organized and participated in the drill competition in Houston, Texas. In 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts, D.C.’s Young Adult Drill Team won third place, first place in Arts and Crafts and third place in the sale of birthday calendars. Frieda Y. Alston was National Young Adult president at that time.

In 1991, Colleen Riddick-Graham (Mt. Bethel Baptist) served as acting Young Adult State President. She also served as Eastern Regional Director from 1989 to 1991, during this time she was elected to various National positions.

In 1993, in Richmond, Virginia under the capable leadership of President Bruce D. Hasty, Sr., who served from 1993-1996, the Young Adult Drill Team won second place, and second place for the Arts and Crafts project. The Department held three 59

National Officers: Bruce D. Hasty, Sr. (Mt. Moriah Baptist), Board Member; Toni T. Frazier (Mt. Moriah Baptist), Arts and Crafts Chairperson; and Roslyn Moore (Canaan Baptist), Health Unit Chairperson. Fancie M. Riddick (Mt. Bethel Baptist Church) served as local counselor and National Young Adult Counselor.

In 1995, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Young Adult Department won third place in the sale of birthday calendars. The department’s 1995 outreach ministry was the distribution of Thanksgiving “Care Baskets” to recipients of four active member churches.

In 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, a banner year for the department, the Young Adult Drill Team won first place in the National Drill Team Competition, and third place in the National Birthday Calendar Project.

Brother Hasty, an articulate, inspiring, and outstanding leader can be credited for many accomplishments of the Department; the most important being the enhancement of the Department both spiritually and numerically. He served during this time as National Young Adult Board Chairman and Young Adult Assistant Eastern Regional Director.

In 1997, Sister Roslyn Moore (Canaan Baptist) succeeded Brother Hasty as president.

That year, the District of Columbia hosted the 78th Annual Convention of the National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc., and the Young Adult Department won First Place in the National Drill Competition as well as the National Birthday Calendar Project.

Before Sister Moore was elected President, she worked untiringly as secretary under President Hasty. She is an exceptional, diligent, and caring person whose first priority is her service to God. She has held several offices in the local, regional, and national. She was elected 16th Young Adult National President at the National Convention in Houston, Texas in July 2000 and served for two years.

In 2001, Sister Connie E. Hemsley-Brown (Mt. Bethel Baptist) succeeded Sister Moore as president. Sister Hemsley-Brown was a dedicated and hard-working member in the Department. Before becoming president, she held various offices in the local and national. She is a very supportive member and valuable asset to the Young Adult Department’s mission.

In 2002, Bro. E. Bobby Williams succeeded Sister Hemsley-Brown as president. He is a dedicated worker in the Department as well as in his church (Galilee Baptist). Bro. Williams has served in various offices of the local, regional, and national. He has shown great leadership at the various levels with the Organization. Under his presidency the Leroy Johnson Tag Day observance was merged with the Department’s Annual Prayer Breakfast. He also challenged each member to match his donation of one hundred dollars to the local building fund.

In 2004, Sister Leslie A. Rogers (Mt. Bethel Baptist) succeeded Bro. Williams as president. She is a capable, faithful and inspiring leader, and was re-elected as President in 2005 and 2006. She has held several offices in the local, regional, and national. She served as the Young Adult Assistant Eastern Regional Director and National Arts and Crafts Chairperson. Under her leadership, the ICUA of Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc., joined in with the Literacy Volunteers of the National Capital Area to provide volunteer services to adults experiencing problems in literary and day-to-day activities. This has proven to be a most rewarding experience to the recipients as well as the volunteers.

In February 2006, we bid farewell to one of the department’s most faithful members Sis. Bernadette Smith (Mt. Bethel Baptist). She was a tremendously dedicated member and was best known for her delectable cooking and her ability to design and create beautiful, artistic crafts. We will miss her greatly, but her memory will live on in our hearts forever.

In January 2009, a charge was made to reactivate the Young Adult Department and Dimitri Harris accepted the challenge. He heard the call and took an attitude of “Yes, we can”. In March 2010, Dimitri took another challenge and accepted the position of Young Adult Assistant Eastern Regional Director.

The Young Adult Department is now active in all levels – local, regional, and national. Their motto is: “Doing great things for the Lord, promoting a spirit of fellowship and unity among ushers bridging the gap between the Junior and Senior Departments.”

In January 2013, after being elected in December 2012, Sister Christie C. Cooper, of Miles Memorial CME Church, was installed as President of the Young Adult Department. She accepted the position with great excitement and expectation for the Department. She chose the theme for her tenure as “Transforming Christian Service through Commitment, Leadership and Unity” using the supporting scripture of Romans 12:2. The Department is well on the move to meet the various goals she has set.

In 2014 President Cooper continued to lead her team by using the same “Transforming Christian Service through Commitment, Leadership and Unity and the department has met the goals that she set, such as: Led a forum discussion for the Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Usher's Workshop; Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure; Completed a Book Drive for donation to Academy of Hope; Gospel Extravaganza Program; YAD Team won first place at the NUCUAA Convention in Indianapolis, IN and held a T-shirt Fundraiser.

Currently, Karisse Carmack of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church is the Young Adult President. She has worn several hats since joining the ICUA’s Young Adult Department in Summer 2009, having started out as the Financial Secretary before 61

serving as Vice President under Past President Dmitri Harris and Immediate Past President Christie Cooper; additionally, she has served as the Department’s Corresponding Secretary and was the chairperson of the Department’s Community Service Committee.

Prior to being installed as the Young Adult President in January 2017, then-Vice President Carmack spearheaded projects benefitting the D.C. metropolitan area’s most vulnerable citizens, including: a Gift Card Drive on behalf of My Sister’s Place, a local nonprofit organization providing services to survivors of domestic violence, and organizing volunteer opportunities for the ICUA at the Capital Area Food Bank. The Young Adult Department’s theme for this year, “Honoring Christ through Faith and Service” reflects President Carmack’s and the Department’s commitment to helping people in need and performing outreach activities on behalf of the ICUA of D.C. & Vicinity, Inc.

VASHONE MUSE PRESIDENT

HISTORY OF THE JUNIOR AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S DEPARTMENT Prior to 1926, Mrs. Pricilla Burgess had a dream that the ICUA of D.C. needed an addition to their organization to include the young people. In December of 1926 her dream became a reality when she organized the Junior and Young People's Department. During the early years Mrs. Mary Wright and Mrs. Amanda Collins assisted her. The department's meetings were held once a month on Fridays at various churches, Garnett Patterson Junior High and Cardozo High Schools.

Down through the years, the young people have served their local, region and national departments with love, enthusiasm, dignity, unselfishness and pride.

Some of those that have served as presidents have been: Wayland Ross (Mt. Moriah Baptist), Naomi Hood McKeathan (Third Baptist), Calvin Jackson, Sr. (Friendship Baptist), Frieda Alston (Bethlehem Baptist), Willie Jenkins (Southern Baptist), Earl Jefferson (St. Phillips Baptist), Michael Thompson (Liberty Baptist), Shirley Clark (Mt. Lampkin of the New Redeemer Baptist Church was elected as President of the Junior and Young People's Department. After being installed in January 2013, he asked the Young Adults and Senior Departments for their support and guidance. His theme for 2013 is “Walking Forward Together with God Ordering Our Steps” with supporting scripture Psalms 119:113. Under his leadership, the Department has been actively recruiting new members, providing training on parliamentary procedures and participating in the ICUA sermons and programs.

In December 2016, Vashone Muse of Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church became the new President of the Junior and Young People's Department. President Muse is looking forward to leading the Department in the direction that God has intended. President Muse has chosen the theme, “Developing Our Abilities through Faith in Christ.” Scripture, Philippians 4:13:” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” He is also requesting the love and support of the Young Adult and Senior Departments. President Muse is up for the challenge which has been placed upon him as President of the Junior and Young People's Department.

Some of those who served as supervisor were: •

Sister Eliza Kilgo (Walker Memorial Baptist) a legend in her time, knowledge, experience and served for many years.

Sister Helen Curtis (First Baptist Randolph) was dedicated to the ICUA in many capacities; she shared her time, knowledge, experience and money for years. Sister Curtis was responsible for the Flower Garden Parade to be added to the Vicie Juran Pageant in the district and the national.

Sister Louise Nelson (Mt. Horeb Baptist) by having, showing and giving love. Sister Nelson guided the department to great heights of membership along with her mother, friend, nurse and counsel to all the juniors under her supervision. In the years 2002, the honorary title of Supervisor Emeritus was bestowed upon Sister Nelson.

•

Sis Gladys Perry (Edgewood Baptist) followed Sister Nelson, she served diligently and steadfast for several years until her tenure was up.

•

Sister Anna Harris (Friendship Baptist) served as an assistant for many years. Her dedication, loyalty, giving and sweet spirit was an inspiration to others.

•

Sister Gladys Crawley (Walker Memorial Baptist) served as supervisor from 1992-2000. Under Sister Crawley's leadership, the department continued to grow and was successful in all areas of competition.

•

Sister Pansy Bradley-Cooper (Miles Memorial CME) followed Sister Crawley's steps and was well prepared in the stewardship of ushering. Under her tenure the Junior Department had a successful 75th Anniversary at Martin Crosswinds Restaurant on February 24, 2002 honoring Supervisor Emeritus, Louise Nelson for her dedication to the Junior Department. Sister BradleyCooper's community projects were also successful by encouraging the young people by donating their time and energy in gathering teddy bears, crayon, coloring books, uno cards, bicycles, strollers and clothing to Children's Hospital and later to Howard University's Pediatric and Child Care Department.

Sister Christine Gray (Greater Peoples Union Baptist) served as Supervisor from 2004-2007 carrying on the work started by the past supervisors. The summer of 2006 the Junior Department collected camping equipment for Howard University Hospital and Child Care Department to send underprivileged children to camp.

•

Sister Stacey A. Reaves (Unity Baptist) served as Supervisor and led the Junior Department in various project through-out her tenure.

•

Sister Earline Green-Croom (Mt. Carmel) served as Supervisor during the presidency of London Lampkin. She is continuing to guide the Junior and Young People's Department as an Assistant Supervisor



The current Supervisor is Sister lona Carter of the Trinidad Baptist Chruch. She continues to encourage the Juniors to carry out their mission.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Junior and Young People's Department held it 80th Anniversary at Martin's Crosswinds on Saturday, December 8, 2008 honoring the following persons: ICUA Father, Elder Charles Oliver, Florence Coble and Christie Cooper.

The Department donated 8 boxes (eight) of non-perishable food in October 2004 to Food and Friends.

On the national level, the Junior and Young People of the District have always participated in the George T. Grier School of Ushering Competition and the Vicie Juran Flower Pageant, where Mrs. Mary Oliver and Niary Vaughn Robinson won first prize. Among our juniors that have won scholarships in the Allan

A. C. Griffith Education Department are: Alfreda Davis-Jones (Friendship Baptist), Shirley Homer (Florida Avenue Baptist), Marvin Ford (Friendship Baptist, and Nolan Williams (Mt. Carmel Baptist).

Our young people have gone on to become ministers, teachers, lawyers, specialists, secretaries, business managers and musical entertainers. They could not have accomplished so much, had it not been for the dedicated men and women who gave up their time, patience, money and love to help guide and direct them in the right paths of life. Many continue to serve at local, region and national levels. They served with the Seniors at the 104th Anniversary Service and have the Vicie Juran, Pageant and Luncheon each year. Gabriell Mebane was Queen, escorted by Aaron Green at the National. They have assisted the Men with the Thanksgiving Baskets. Six Juniors attended the Eastern Region Conference 2017. Oscar Mebane is serving as the Regional Director and 3rd National Vice President.. Quron Green is the National Financial Secretary. They also continue to sponsor outreach projects and have visited the National Museum of African American History and culture.

You are invited to join us! Our meetings are held the 4th Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the I.C.U.A. Headquarters located at 1923 - 16th Street, N.W., Washington, DC. It is a requirement that the individual must be a member of his/her Church Usher Board, between the ages of 8-21, and the Senior Board is a member of the I.C.U.A. Provisions are made for persons who are interested in membership who are nonmembers of a church usher board through an Associate Membership.
