The BGCA Parent Wellness Centre is a threeyear project funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It provides parents with the facility to relax and nourish their holistic wellness. Through a variety of group activities and workshops, the Program strives to promote a healthy practice for parents at the physical, psychological, social and spiritual levels, so as to cope with the pressure of parenting and strengthen family resilience.

To facilitate the Project in nurturing the psychological health of parents, the design of the Centre aims to provide a variety of moods and vibes in different rooms through the application of various color combinations. Curvatures are adopted to public areas and circulatory spaces for creating spaces that are more pleasant to the human psyche.

Design Scope

Design proposal for the Revitalization of the existing inaccessible roof of the Communal Building that features the addition of link bridge connecting Core S and steel staircase as access routes; raised roof deck and lawn area; and kiosks and other amenities.

Structural Approach

The structural connections of all new additional structures such as the link-bridge, staircase, kiosks, roof deck, sitting platforms, etc. should be made at locations of existing columns supporting the waffle roof slab. For new structures not situated immediately above existing structural supports, careful attention should be paid towards the transfer load path to the existing supports by providing strategically placed steel beams.

Context

The Lyric Theatre Complex (Contract L2) & Associated Common Basement (Contract L1) is one of the major venues situated within the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong, an ambitious 40 hectare waterfront cultural quarter that combines open public space with a selection of cultural venues. Here museums, theatres and concert halls intermingle to create a vibrant district, where different disciplines within the arts can interact, collaborate, innovate and develop.

Alongside the wide variety of cultural offerings, the District also comprises mixed-use residence, office buildings, and 23 hectares of public space and squares, all of which are connected along a two kilometre long harbourfront promenade.

Jason Fung | Portfolio 2024 P. 73

Lyric Theatre Complex

The Lyric Theatre Complex is a mixed-use venue that houses three main theatres (a 1,450-seat Lyric Theatre, a 600-seat Medium Theatre, and a 270-seat Studio Theatre), a large Rehearsal Room, a Resident Company Centre with eight dance and rehearsal studios and administrative facilities, and an extensive programme allocation for retail, dining and entertainment.

Air Plots: An Alternative to Urban Gentrification

Program:

Master of Architecture

University of Hong Kong

Project:

Thesis 2013-14

Advisor:

Jason Carlo

Air Plots borrows the regulatory model of Air Rights zoning from New York City, and adapts it to Hong Kong’s urban context as an opportunistic approach to critique some of the city’s contemporary urban (re)development issues. Namely, land scarcity; the current model of urban gentrification; and the practical and socio-political problems that stem from such strategy.

Urban village: urban spine Parasite

Program:

Master of Architecture

University of Hong Kong

Project:

Design Studio, Fall 2013

Instructors:

William Lim (CL3) & Eddy Kim (OpenUU)

The Wan Chai footbridge has evolved into an essential infrastructural element of the neighborhood that not only serves its intended function, but also becomes an integral component of a bigger context, along with the multiple layers of micro-communities it nourishes. The design concept of the added program of the community centre complex along the length of the footbridge is to achieve programmatic integration, while maintaining structural independence. The building design involves distributed formal strategy of segregated programs strategically arranged to create positive spaces for congregation, and negative spaces for circulation, so that the building together with the footbridge creates an urban park in the midst of the Wan Chai district.

Without interrupting the intended function and structure of the footbridge, users are provided with an option to deviate from their original path, and be able to penetrate and meander through the entire village of community centre that is also an urban park. The art and process of creating art that is happening in the community centre are exposed and therefore promoted to the general public as they stroll and sit along the village.

The Room

Program:

Bachelor of Environmental Study

Dalhousie University

Project:

Design Studio, Fall 2010

The room explores the meaning of shelter by formally dividing the program into the three categories: convenience, safety, and detachment. These categories are defined by the physical distance between each component and the road to the east- the only context offered by this imaginary site. This simple structure offers bike storage upon arrival, followed by living quarters which, together with the tea house/meditation room, create an outdoor courtyard.

The living quarters consist of a modular furniture system that slides on a track, so it can be easily transformed into various configurations to accommodate the functions of bedroom, kitchen, study, and living room, all in one space.

Shakespeare by the sea Pavilion

Location: Blackrock Beach, Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, NS, Canada

Program:

Bachelor of Environmental Study

Dalhousie University

Project: Design Studio, Fall 2010

sch 04

Due to the site being at Point Pleasant Park, the structure will have to serve not only Shakespeare by the Sea, but also the park users. The form is inspired by the Globe Theatre in such a way that emphasis is given to the inside of the circular shape. The pavilion exaggerates this notion by simplifying the roof and wall into one single element: a curved sliding wall panel, cladded with thatch, which provides a visual reference to the architecture in Shakespeare’s era, and a way to incorporate the immediate landscape to create a unique but changing spatial quality, as well as flexibility in its functions.

The reverse lunenberg Bump

Location:

Lunenberg, Halifax, NS, Canada

Program:

Bachelor of Environmental Study

Dalhousie University

Project:

Design Studio, Winter 2010

The ‘Lunenberg Bump’ is a typology unique to the UNESCO heritage site of Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. It features a central circulation core and an attic space or ‘bump’ that overhangs the main entrance. My design reinterprets this traditional typology by flipping the plan inside-out, resulting in two dense walls on its sides that accommodate all utilities (staircase, bathrooms, cabinets, etc.), and a central light-well. The light-well is inaccessible but serves as a totemic element that provides the house with natural light and an unique experience of the climate.

The Reverse Lunenberg Bump gets its name from its central void space which is exposed to the elements. The design reverses the traditional Lunenberg bump house layout, moving the central circulation core to the periphery.

The eccentric experience of being exposed to the climate at the center of the house raises awareness of the immediate environment, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior space.
