The Era of Resilience

Dealing with the economy’s ups and downs is something retailers are used to. But the last five years have certainly thrown more of them their way than usual.

Shop owners have dealt with a global pandemic, supply chain issues, and inflation. Throughout that time, they have pivoted numerous times. And they continue to do so.

The latest topic on the minds of many is tariffs. In early May, the United States and China agreed to a 90-day pause on the 125% reciprocal and retaliatory tariffs. This pause provides some relief, as you make decisions at summer markets about what products you will order for winter and the holiday season.

I often share what I see in my local retail community, and this seems like an especially appropriate time to give examples of what some of these independent retailers have been up to.

A boutique known for its selection of trendy fashions recently held a dog foster event. A gift shop that adds plants to its inventory each spring organized a plant swap. That store also has a candle bar — providing opportunities for after-hour’s events like bridal and baby showers.

One of the latest additions is a 3D print shop that produces one-of-a-kind models. An art supply store that was formerly on that same downtown block has since moved into a larger space. I can always tell when a class or special event is taking place there based on the number of children heading in and out of the shop with their parents.

Planning workshops and unique events takes time and creativity, but the payoff is big. Consumers are interested in these types of experiences, and someone attending a bridal shower or workshop can soon become a store’s frequent and favorite customer.

Once again, this demonstrates how retailers continue adapting to changes in consumers’ habits and more importantly, showing their resilience in trying times by showing up day after day with smiles and optimism.

It always takes courage to start a business, and your strength is evident as you keep working amidst economic uncertainty. Let’s hope negotiations between the United States and China continue to be constructive regarding their trade relationship.

SI would love to start leveraging social media to sell more directly from my store shelves, especially on slower days. What advice do you have for a newbie when it comes to social selling? I know this is important to learn, as we want to embrace our younger consumers as well.

ocial commerce has proven itself to not just be a trend but rather a game changer for consumer connectivity. With retail historically evolving over time and modern retail proving to be no different, it is fantastic you are proactively considering how social commerce can help your store.

Social selling — also known as social commerce — is a sales strategy that utilizes social media platforms to engage potential customers through video and other social media content. This engagement aims to drive sales via social media platforms by positioning the salespeople in the shared content as trusted resources in their industry and to consumers.

From a retail perspective, this provides a fantastic avenue for merchants to connect with consumers not only on slower days, but every day. By incorporating social selling into your routine, you are welcoming the opportunity to increase sales, store visibility, and customer loyalty.

For years, mainstream retailers like Anthropologie, Ulta Beauty, and Nike have regularly leveraged social selling as part of their strategy to capture consumers’ dollars. As time passes, more customers are not only enjoying this path to purchase but also expecting it from retailers of all shapes and sizes. Incorporate this into your own business by considering the key factors below.

Identify Which Platform Supports Your Goals

If you plan to use one exclusive site for this strategy, such as Tik Tok, you can use its unique selling platform directly. It is built into their social media settings and is an easy addition to set up. However, you can expand multiple social media sites by integrating software designed for social selling, such as Comment Sold, an interactive, engaging virtual live selling technology.

Video Is the Forefront of Social Selling

Through video, you can highlight your in-store displays, demonstrate product usage, share inventory updates, and more. Whether it is you or someone from your team who communicates via these videos, the engagement of the video is mostly dependent on the person speaking.

Are they funny? Informative? Friendly? All the above? You want to have someone represent your business that you trust will put your store in a positive position that demands attention online.

As you reflect on this, ask yourself if you would stop your social media scrolling if this person and what they were sharing was in your feed. This is the goal of every video shared. They should not just capture attention but keep the attention of those watching.

Creating Sales Is the Objective

Having a call to action as part of your strategy is important to communicate to your audience what you want them to do. It may be identifying the top five Back to School items they need now, sharing a limited availability of certain scarves left on your store shelves, or alerting customers to an in-demand item that has recently been delivered and will not last long.

These call-to-action messages are incredibly important to get customers to want to act — and spend — right away, hence the insertion of social selling technology that allows them to do so.

With social selling becoming more recognized and enjoyed by consumers, it is a powerful addition to help you increase sales well beyond your store walls. Another tip is to be sure to have options in place for pick up in store or direct shipment to customers upon their checkout via social selling.

The initial steps to get this up and running may take a bit of organization. But once in place, they can be a terrific addition to your store strategy and most importantly, your sales.

Consumers value authenticity in print and digital advertising. This is according to an article by Tony Pec in a recent issue of Forbes which says consumers would rather see people and places that reflect real life rather than slick, retouched photos and images.

Social media marketers are striving to create more true to life content, and consumers are responding favorably to messages they can relate to and people who look like them. Pec offers a few tips for creating more relatable content:

• Engage in two-way conversations. Do not just post it and forget it. Users want to be seen and heard. Respond to users’ comments and invite feedback.

• Own your mistakes. Just like in real life, admit to your mistakes. Acknowledge it, apologize, and tell users how you plan to fix the issue. Readers appreciate it when brands show their humanity, admit their mistakes, and take steps to do better.

Rule No. 1 regarding visual merchandising for men is to keep it simple! It should be colorized and easy for shopping, with forms and fixtures that demonstrate layering and styling ideas.

Can you do some cross-merchandising? Having tackled that, it is time to think about propping and décor.

How can your displays or merchandising vignettes reflect a bit of a masculine touch? It might be a bit more of the color blue in the mix or sports equipment, cocktails, or carpentry tools. There are a wide variety of options.

Or it may be easier to think of the props and décor items you want to avoid . . . pastels, florals, lace . . . you get the idea.

Removing feminine props and décor often renders trend areas or windows a bit sparse, but focusing on popular hobbies and pastimes can wield a wealth of categories.

Motorcycles and automobiles have a special appeal as they age … what was once a bit outdated in time acquires vintage charm. Even rust can be an attractive patina!

You might even add miniature sets of trains as another wheelbased interest. Antique vehicles also have the advantage of offering multiple parts that can be adapted as risers, fixtures, and more.

For example, hubcaps, steering wheels, and bumpers can be easily used in windows and on merchandise tables. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase items from local collectors in exchange for credit signage. If you prefer to keep these items a bit more current, look at Formula One racing items like flags and helmets.

Small space? Small cars or parts from cars, trucks, or motorcycles work perfectly.

Wet Your Whistle

Want to quench your shopper’s thirst for the perfect gift? Cocktails, mocktails, beer, and wine can automatically set the time and place for specialized hobbies: custom barware and glassware, home brewing, mixology recipes, and even aprons. Your displays might include bottles, and/or carafes.

NOTE: do NOT use bottles filled with alcohol products in your windows! Chances are quite good the bottles will explode — you will need to empty and then substitute the appropriately colored liquid into the designated container.

And do not forget morning rituals of coffee and tea as alternative display themes. Inclusion of whole, roasted coffee beans in open containers can trigger another sensory experience for the customer — ahh!

For the DIY guy

Merchandise tables made from sawhorses. Wood slices as trays, risers. Stumps used as small tables or stools. Vintage tools, mason jars, and tool buckets.

Have fun and add touches of wood, stones, and common materials, such as twine, burlap, and cork, to boost a natural palette. As always, time-tested favorites like pallets, crates, and wooden shelving help support (literally) your storytelling efforts.

The Great Outdoors

Add something like cacti to a display when appropriate.

I am not sure how I ended up married to Mr. Campsite (!) when I would much rather be at an historic inn. But that will not stop me from shopping for flashlights, lanterns, compasses, flannel throws, and even supplies for s’mores.

Not your merchandise assortment? No problem. Add firewood, red/black plaid flannel, or pinecones to a display. Line your showcases with maps and add pine boughs or cacti where appropriate.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Regardless of which team you cheer for, time spent at the ballpark or stadium can summon an interest in sports paraphernalia, including equipment and even tailgating items like coolers and grills. Support your local teams with pompoms in team colors and pennants. It’s a win, win!

THE PORCH IN BUFFALO

Teresa DeJarlais turned her love of nature and old, unique items into a business.

“I grew up in a large family, and my best memories are from being at our grandparents’ farm,” she said.

“This satisfies my love for buying! I love to share what is here and promote goodwill in this great old building.”

“As a child, I remember being interested in and having an admiration of old stuff there.”

Her journey to opening a gift shop started in 1988 when she was living in Elk River, Minnesota. “I began by participating in craft and art shows in my home and other locations,” Teresa said. “I enjoyed gathering and drying flowers, grasses, weeds, etc. I then made and sold wreaths I made from local vines.”

Those first shows were called Fall Gatherings. It expanded with

her love of flea markets and estate sales.

Soon Teresa was selling in a small antique store space. She was then approached by the owner of an occasional shop and joined it before stocking her items in another antique shop as well.

“By this time, I lived in a 1940s bungalow, offering workshops and events there, plus a shop in my back porch. During these years, I also had a full-time career, while supplementing my income with my passion for old and handmade,” she said.

Her background includes working in an education system in both classroom and clerical positions. Those experiences aided Teresa in her business venture — giving her

skills and helping her learn how to work with all ages and kinds of people.

The move into that bungalow is how Teresa came up with her shop’s name — The PORCH. And in January 2003, she took her business

to Buffalo, Minnesota — leasing the lower level of an old building and opening an occasional sale there.

Buffalo is about 23 miles southwest of Elk River. “Buffalo has grown a lot but still has its quaint downtown area with a lake,” she said. “About 40 miles west of the Twin Cities, many people are attracted to our vibrant shopping community of 20+ businesses.”

When Teresa had her first occasional sale in Buffalo, she began restyling furniture and décor — always focusing on gardens and nature in her displays. The occasional sale was open four days a month.

Within the first year, Teresa was able to lease the other two floors of the building — the second floor for another shop level and the third floor for her home. She added hours after acquiring the other levels.

The PORCH in Buffalo continues to be open on that occasional sale schedule, with the main level open Thursday through Saturday each week. Of the occasional sale, Teresa said, “Our traffic is channeled during those four days, allowing time to collect, refresh, add, and offer fresh items each month. It’s an economical way of doing business. We lower utility bills, for example. It also allows us to operate as a cooperative with vendor staffing.”

She purchased the building in 2019 and has completed numerous remodeling projects. “This is a great old 1902 brick building, and I’ve been able to renovate while keeping the original beauty of the building,” Teresa said. “Each floor has seen changes, with most happening in the third-floor apartment: exposing brick walls and ceiling rafters, removing vinyl and carpet flooring to expose original floor, kitchen updates with cabinets built of old doors, windows. Everything is simply done and has attracted a lot of attention.”

Vintage, antique, faux floral, fresh green plants, new items focusing on gifts (soap, jewelry, candles), home, and garden décor fill Teresa’s gift shop. Regarding what is selling well, Teresa said, “Lately, I notice clusters of people in three areas: by our fresh green plants and pots; costume jewelry (our $10 rings are popular), and we have a huge table of unframed linen prints in all styles. Secondhand clothing is popular in our $6-$16 range.”

Teresa goes to estate sales and flea markets every week if possible and said that is another reason the store is not open every day. She also loves France and travels there annually if she can.

“I look for and find what I’d want in my own home. Furniture, home, and garden pieces,” she said. “We clean. We paint if needed to rescue a piece. We don’t just paint everything.”

What products does Teresa search for at markets to complement what her gift shop offers? “Price point, color, and style decide what we offer. In addition to liking our aesthetic and style, clients love our value,” she said.

When asked if she has changed what the store carries since opening, Teresa said everything has evolved and changed over

time. Some of that is due to necessity. For example, old and antique items are more difficult to acquire in her area due to availability and cost. Other changes have followed what her clientele likes.

Teresa has had as many as 12 vendors and currently has four. “We’ve changed our business model to use more floor space for workshops,” she said. “We have variety in what we offer, while staying true to our style. Our vendors don’t compete. For example, we sell similar but not identical items.”

The vendors who sell with Teresa work the shop’s open hours. “We’re not open every day. We operate frugally. Expenses are kept at a minimum,” she said.

Inspiring customers is what this store is all about. Teresa said they have always operated with the concept of wanting to sell what is there and acquire more.

Their typical customers are females aged 16 to 70. Men make up about 15% of the store’s customers.

What do visitors say about the store? Every day the shop is open, Teresa hears variations on how someone loves the shop, visits it intentionally, and brings friends to meet her. Others say it feels so good in the store and the prices are great.

“People comment that we’re well curated. We think outside the box, mixing and matching,” Teresa said. “We offer what we love and keep everything clean. Dusting, touching, moving — all of that energy equals sales.”

Customer care is important. “We say hello when they come in the door. We check in while they’re here. We show sincere appreciation,” she said. “We take time to package their items, adding ribbon, a flourish of tissue, etc. We treat people with kindness and a welcoming attitude.”

The PORCH in Buffalo has an online store, but it is not used. “People express an interest, and so many of our items would be popular online, but I haven’t figured out how to make the time to do it,” she said. “I know it’s a great way to shop!”

Among the challenges Teresa has faced since opening her store are the ups and downs of the economy and how it affects business. It has meant she must constantly learn how to market what they do and create interest. She said, “I’ve always worked with dealers and others here, with me saying we can work to bring people here, but will they want to come back?”

A turning point for her business was the realization that national magazines were interested in her story. “It’s been a busy time, full of hard work and being constantly aware of change and knowing our clientele,” Teresa said.

Special events and classes are held at The PORCH in Buffalo. “My intention with events is to ‘bring the French life home,’” Teresa said. “My travel to France and sales of the flea market items I find are popular. Our April in Paris event started in my Elk River home and continued here until recently, including a chef-made lunch, prizes, and tours of my third-floor apartment. I now offer ‘French Finds’ sales (by email invite) and workshops in floral, painting, simple upholstery, and more.”

Her most effective marketing strategies are social media, email blasts, off-site shows, and word of mouth. Teresa and her vendors take pictures all the time for social media and include videos and live sales on those platforms.

She is connected to her community. Teresa is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau and promotes their local events. She donates to schools, youth athletics, and fundraisers and participates in events with Buffalo’s downtown retail group. Teresa belongs to a networking group and recommends

joining one, saying it has expanded her connections and knowledge of entrepreneurial businesses other than retail.

Teresa’s family and friends have grown the business with her, and their support is invaluable. And living on her building’s third floor, she describes it as the ideal lifestyle.

Her advice for those who recently opened a gift shop is, “It’s not work if you have a passion for it. But you need to take care of yourself.” As for what she likes best about what she does, Teresa said, “This satisfies my love for buying! I love to share what is here and promote goodwill in this great old building.”
