EDITORIAL’S LETTER

Editor’s Letter: The Story Behind The PEOPLE

To develop and empower member – that is our vision as one JPMAP community. We have been fostering academic opportunities to enable growth in our members so they can be the best future human resource professionals. JPMAP-MMSU, then, had this simple yet innovative idea for the local chapter: to create its first and official publication.

"PEOPLE: The HR Source" was born from a basic notion that grew in the creative imaginations of its members. We wish to establish an approach for making the organization, its members, and their excellence widely known to the general populace. This publication is one of numerous examples demonstrating how we value our members and their future.

We believe in the power of our core values - Integrity, Respect, Interdependence, Social Responsibility, and Excellence (IRISE). Therefore, in this journal, we give honest views and facts based

on real events and situations by writing articles that reflect the pride and honor of JPMAP members. The members have collaborated countless times, coming up with a single, powerful idea that they were able to convey to and ultimately presented to the public. Hence, they are worthy to be published.

To aid your interest about the publication, here is an overview. . It has the following five sections, namely, Milestones, Editorial Section, News Section, Feature Well, and Fun Section. The Milestone will detail the major events that occurred within the organization that led to simultaneous changes and improved the academic excellence of the organization. The Editorial Section contains articles that discuss the latest HR-related issues and its most probable solution/s. The News Section contains articles regarding the notable events of A.Y. 2021-2022.

The Feature Well will introduce 2 professionals and a member who will share their

journey as an HR student/ practitioner and inspire readers through the interview gathered. Lastly, the Fun Section contains different digital arts and games to engage members.

“In the PEOPLE, we value 3 things - words, design, and most of all, people.”

These three creates eyecatching, informative, and reliable data that would help readers in setting their path and in gaining a firm grasp of Human Resource Management is and the holistic JPMAP experience.

This publication and its editorial team endured great hardships to make this goal a reality. A total of 27 individuals joined hand-in-hand to have this beautifully crafted magazine. Therefore, your interest in reading this will give justice to everyone's hard work, not only the writers and other contributors, but also the people featured in this publication.

SUCCESS WITHOUT

Inthe past years, crucial issues surrounding Human Resource Management are challenging how people leaders perceive the aspects that influence employees and their roles. But above these controversies is a long-fought argument about the essentiality of the profession. Whether entities realized the value of Human Resources in achieving their goals or considering that it can still proliferate without it. Now is the right time to awaken the matter while distinguishing the capacity and contribution of everybody in the organizationall the individuals who prioritize its success. It is truly necessary to tackle the roles of HR professionals especially in today’s time where global economic crises are abruptly affecting almost all facets of employment. Thus, these people leaders whether or not businesses and companies prioritize are the drivers of the industry.

Most start-up companies are inaugurated without an HR department and even HR staff, their reasons are generally focused on cost and the argument that HR is not a highly technical function and so anyone can do it. In an article published by Chris Lennon, he highlighted that HR is disappearing especially in companies that have flat management structures where accountability is encouraged among its employees. Though it is truly vital that workers are obligated to be responsible with their tasks, work outcomes and decisions, Human Resources is not just all about the traditional function that oversees those kinds of administrative duties. Today, even multinational and megacorporations are considering the absence of an HR department and HR staff in their operation. These companies believed that HR is

between the companies who have HR departments and staff and those that do not, a gap provides a clear distinction firstly, to the employees; their morale, motivation and job satisfaction. And secondly the company itself; its competitiveness.

To answer the question, do all organizations have an HR staff? The answer is no. But if the question is, do all organizations ‘need’ HR staff? Definitely yes.

creates an engaged workforce. HR is needed as long as a company has employees to supervise and direct. Engaging the workers is necessary for propagating a productive environment where innovation and prime results are present. Through education and training, HR professionals have been able to unleash the workers’ fullest potential. Isn’t the duty of an HR one of a kind? - it does not just focus

HUMAN RESOURCES?

on its ability to super vise but also has proficiency in influencing individuals. HR staff are warriors in developing a constant support system; it may be in assisting the health and wellness or encouraging the career advancement of its employees. Moreover, HR professionals are strategic partners and, the administrative idea about the profession was long ago refined. There is still HR staff who accomplish such function, but the scope of their ability is not just limited to the table of their subordinates, rather they are now distinguished in creating crucial solutions for the executives. And these compact commitments are an immense ingredient for a company to succeed. A cliche saying, 'a company's greatest asset is its employees', and the workforce will then be efficient if they will be managed, improved and prioritized.

Now, it is a challenge for HR professionals and students to revolutionize the argument on the essentiality of Human Resources. The years of learning would be inspirational when entities will then recognize the necessity of the profession. The people leaders are brave individuals who will continue to aspire the workforce in making the best out of their abilities and realize that a workplace is not just an area but rather a way to be great and to lead. May this attempt catalyze an improvement through mindset and action. As the industry continues to build prime achievements, be reminded of the leaders and professionals who took the first steps in transforming Human Resources as a necessity not just a convenience. And as the global economy becomes abruptly challenging and rigorous, always choose progress, always choose the people.

OPINION –“GOING FORWARD WITH THE NEW

NORMAL SHOULD BE NORMAL”

Over time, the impact of COVID-19 on our daily lives lessens, and various industries gradually resume operations as usual. Businesses, tourism, universities, and other establishment are progressively returning to normal.

But does our workplaces need to return to how it was? Or can we continue the hybrid setup that the new normal has brought upon us?

The hybrid system promised employees the advantages and benefits of working remotely and in-office. It has promoted a more flexible, satisfying, and healthier working routine for professionals. This system also provided employees the freedom of “when” to work and “where”. It allows employees to fit their professional duties into their personal lives. Fortunately, this system promotes both sociability and independence in work. The advantages of a hybrid work setup are not to be discounted, nor is the opportunity to spend time with loved ones outside of work. The time and money saved from not having to travel as far would be well worth it. With the rise and development of various technical advancements, this multifunctional system may be the real future of industries.

It is given that along with revolutionary changes in science, a human must also cope with surviving the modern age. Companies should also look into different yet transcending ways of managing human capital with these opportunities. They should look into possible ways for better management while promoting employee welfare. A hybrid work setup will be the fortress of new generation human capital. It would shape the new world of business. The new normal setup may have been a sign or a step toward making the working world more smart, flexible, and resilient. When talking about hybrids, all you need to do is strike a balance.

WRONG TURN OR RIGHT TURN?

you want to make more money in the future, you should become an accountant, a doctor, or an engineer." I started Senior High School with these words reverberating in my head every night, and the pressure was slowly killing me. My family and friends' high expectations had become so massive that nearly destroyed the so-called best part of one's life. Refraining from social activities and being stuck doing paper works has been my hobbies. You could describe my high school life as full of stress and lifeless. When I entered college, I didn't pass the entrance exam for Accountancy at Mariano Marcos State University, and half of my classmates who also didn't pass went to Marketing Management. There is a thinking in my head that I didn't want to follow my classmates because I wanted to explore new people and new environments, but I was also afraid that it would lead to increased despair and anxiety. Nonetheless, Human Resource Management came into play during my decision-making process. I know a few things about it, but strange feelings drove me to accept it, so I stepped outside my comfort zone to explore this course.

challenges don't give me anxiety because of the people surrounding me. Through the HR management course, I met friends that are thoughtful and supportive of my efforts to be the best version of myself. Even though I did not have a life during my high school years, college brought out the genuine beauty of my life by adding rainbowlike hues. It is also where I grow as a person and a future professional as they allow me to be an officer in our organization. But that is not only the thing I am grateful about; it is the facts and opportunities of being a Human Resource Manager.

mold them and be the best version of themselves.

Did I choose the wrong turn or the right turn? Indeed, Human Resource Management course is challenging. It takes a lot of effort to understand the most significant asset or the lifeblood of every organization – people. Continuous development of skills, abilities, and knowledge is needed to fill people's gaps in an organization. However, these

According to Robert S. Balan (2022), an HR manager's responsibilities are to address employees' concerns, hire top talent, evaluate employee performance, implement reward systems, and many more. Social intelligence, problem-solving, creativity, and innovation skills are needed to accomplish these tasks. Since human resources evolves human, it includes social intelligence, which means you have to understand how to motivate these people and understand their emotions, wants, and needs to manage them properly. Most importantly, to socialize with them appropriately regardless of different backgrounds and beliefs. Problemsolving skill is also needed since misunderstanding between people is inevitable. Creativity for continuous improvement and being innovative in new ideas is also needed. Therefore, being an HR is not just about dealing with other people but also thinking of ways to develop them as a person and professionals to

The best part is that you can make a difference for every individual. I think this is the best feeling I could do in the future. Giving pieces of advice to motivate them and encourage them to add value to their selves. The ability to do small actions and staying to everyone's heart is the most fulfilling because you cheer up other people and push them to be great. The salary of a Human Resources Manager is just a bonus as it can be up to 66,500 USD/year. It means that you can still make money when you find your passion, not only being an accountant, doctor, or engineer. No matter how high the payroll is, the employee's feeling of happiness and satisfaction is the best reward.

In contrast, letting go of people is the most challenging part of being a human resource manager. For instance, the company is experiencing a financial problem, and the HR department is assigned to downsize the company. Despite the challenge, our role as HR is to utilize all possible resources to retain its people and maintain the company's competitiveness in the industry.

As I maneuver my academic life, I realize I made the right turn!

JPMAPPAREL.CO: DISCLOSING ITS SUCCESS

Heeding the call for innovative income generation, the Ways and Means Committee organizes and implements the first-ever JPMAP-MMSU Merchandise, the JPMAPparel.co consists of T-shirts and Tote bags, which will aid JPMAP in funding educational projects, events, and webinars. The JPMAP Merchandise is a strategy to promote the organization while aiming to reinforce a culture unity among the organization's members by demonstrating their support. This was officially launched in April 22, 2022, as part of the 11th Annual JPMAP Week Celebration's closing program.

From the 264 members of the organization, 75 JPMApers ordered the JPMAPparel.co. Four (4) students from the first year, twenty (20) students from the second year, twenty-one (21) students from the third-year section A, fifteen (15) students from the third-year section B, seven (7) students from the fourth-year section A, and eight (8)

students from the fourth-year section B., respectively. Purchase also came from One (1) local chapter member, and four (4) JPMAP-MMSU alumni.

Ms. Erica (complete name), a 3A Representative said that she ordered JPMAParel.co to show her support for the organization as well as a tangible reminder of her active membership in JPMAP. Ms. Rogelyn (complete name), a 2A Representative, also mentioned that by purchasing JPMAPparel.co, she is demonstrating her support for the organization, assisting in its promotion, and, of course, identifying herself as a solid JPMAPer.

The first-ever JPMAP-MMSU Merchandise has been successfully launched because of the synergistic participation and full support of the JPMAPers. This is true to the quotation of Publius Syrus that, “when there is unity there is always victory.”

TheJPMAPMMSU typically celebrates the chapter's anniversary each year with a 5-day event. This year, in honor of the event's eleventh anniversary, it was celebrated with a theme of a Cartoon Network Series called ‘Adventure Time’.

“Adventure Time: JPMAP-MMSU celebrates its 11th Year with a Cartoon Network series

“Looking back to the time when we came up with 'Adventure Time' as the theme during the 11th Annual JPMAP Week Celebration, it was then when we were in the process of coming up with a theme for the year-round event of the organization. It all started when I spotted a cartoon movie that reminded me of a sword. Like a sword, JPMAP-MMSU Chapter has undergone challenges but still achieved numerous victories. And that was the time we finally decided about the theme.”, John Rhey T. Deus, the President of JPMAP-MMSU, said during a short interview.

The said celebration was held last April 18-28, 2022, at the Social Hall of the College of Business, Economics, and Accountancy at Mariano Marcos State University, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. The 11th Annual JPMAP Week Celebration is entitled “STEEL HR: Solidifying Tactics for Endless Endeavor of Legendary HR”. Due to the limited number of people allowed in the venue, the program was broadcasted through Zoom meetings and Facebook Live to accommodate all its members and other attendees.

Following its theme, the local chapter members were divided into 8 groups named after the Kingdoms of the said theme, namely, Ice Kingdom, Wildberry Kingdom, Lumpy Space, Fire Kingdom, Candy Kingdom, Cloud Kingdom, Wizard City, and Castle Lemongrab. These kingdoms competed in the nine academic and non-academic competitions prepared by the event organizers.

For the first time in the organization's history, students from across levels are mixed in each kingdom. Seventy-five percent of the responses, as reported by the event evaluation, approved this kind of group setup.

“This would be an avenue for them to get to know each other since the academic year started virtually. The setup also helped them in assessing themselves. Also, a reason behind it is for them to practice and depict what's really in the corporate world - the set-up in which you'll be working with different people. This would help them develop their people skills. However, the biggest drawback we've seen is the participation of its members since they come from different sections and year levels. They also find it hard to communicate with their respective groups.” Deus added.

Due to the creativity of this year’s theme, many JPMAPers gained interest and were excitedly looking forward to next year’s theme. They are thrilled about what theme is going to be next.

With this kind of anticipation, will the next set of officers organizing the 12th Annual Week Celebration consider the Harry Potter theme and conduct it face-to-face?

REVEALING THE GEMS OF JPMAP MMSU CHAPTER:

THE FACES OF TODAY’S LEADERS

JPMAP MMSU is dedicated to student empowerment, thus, on September 2021, it hosted a Virtual Leadership Congress to identify potential future officers and reorganize the Academic Year 2021 –2022. The JPMAP MMSU Community casted their votes in unity and elected their preferred candidates. Leading is difficult as it might be tough to know where to start when leading by example. However, the JPMAP MMSU Officers mustered the fortitude to confront these challenges as they selected the road of being a leader and serving the people of the JPMAP MMSU Chapter.

The JPMAP MMSU Community has completed the reorganization and elected new officers for the academic year of 2021-2022. Twenty-five (25) new JPMAP MMSU faces, led by the Elected President, Mr. John Rey Deus, will guide the organization throughout the academic year.

What motivates me to be a leader is because of the PEOPLE of the organization. Because among all of the 7P’s, ‘people’ is the most important. Yes, it’s because of the JPMAP members who motivate me to become a leader I know that I can help them by simply attending to their concerns. I may not be the best leader, but I have the passion for leading people, I have the courage to cultivate one KSAV, and I have the willingness to help them unleash their leadership skills.” Deus said.

Of course, I cannot make it without my co-officers who are always there and promote camaraderie in all situations”. Their camaraderie positively impact-

Gearing up for student empowerment, The Executive Committee, headed by its President John Rhey T. Deus, conducted a meet and greeted for the 1st and 2nd-year students of BSBA – Human Resource Management Program to meet all of the Faculty Staff of the HR Department, Officers of JPMAP, and BSBA-HRM 3rd and 4th-year students.

“The pandemic has pushed us to build barriers that prohibit us from seeing and meeting each other. Even though we are in a terrible season of our life, JPMAP-MMSU strives to go above and above in the face of restrictions,” Director for Research and Publication shared in a social media post on Monday, October 4, 2021.

“The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the world in ways unimaginable. As we look back on the past two years and the harsh repercussions of the pandemic that continue until today, it is apparent that education was one of the most impacted sectors. Neither the world nor educational institutions were prepared to embrace the shift to online platforms at lightning speed.”

On October 9, JPMAP MMSU conducted the Virtual Meet and Greet Opportunity at 9 AM. The event jumpstarted by an Invocation followed by Welcome Remarks by Ms. Sarah Jane S. with the active involvement of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee in the different events and partnerships with other organizations, the Junior People Management Association of the PhilippinesMMSU Chapter has been incredibly productive this school year.

When the pandemic started in 2020, people were isolated in their homes, and living had become a struggle for some. People's mobility was restricted, forcing some to commit suicide due to the financial and mental hardship brought on by the situation. To address this issue, the CSR committee hosted TBT: Truth Be Told, a mental health awareness and support webinar, in November 2021. The webinar's goal was to raise mental health awareness and provide psychosocial support to students and other interested audiences amidst the pandemic. The webinar helped people become more aware of the topic and gave the presenters a chance to offer guidance on adapting to the many recent shifts in one's personal and academic spheres. The webinar drew 200 students from the College of Business Economics and Accountancy's various degree programs. One of the topics was

Tight HAGS: Approaches in Dealing with Mental Health Problems.

Following the webinar, MMSU Human Resource Management students led by the CSR Committee took part in the 2nd Episode of the SDG Series of the Corporate Social Responsibility entitled EARTH: Environmental Alleviation and Restoration Through Humanity, in which a total of 15 video entries for the Energy Hour and SuccSEED were submitted. As a result, the MMSU Chapter was awarded for having the most participants in the aforementioned event.

As a tradition of JPMAPMMSU during the Christmas season, they have partnered with Victory Batac during the season of giving. Through the Love the City Project, help was extended to some of the families in Batac City by distributing Noche Buena Packages. This activity also promoted Victory Batac's good works and unwavering dedication to bringing joy and hope to others. The Love the City Project was successful as a result of the contributions of all Human Resource Management students and the financial assistance of the sponsors of the activity.

JPMAP-MMSU, led by

the CSR Committee, backed the JPMAP National CSR initiatives in accomplishing their goals for Episode 3 ARAPAAP: Aligning Reflective Ambitions that Provides Applicable Assistance with a Purpose. The activity was held at Caestebanan Elementary School in Banna, Ilocos Norte, on December 19, 2021. It was a day filled with purpose and hope, especially for the school's learners. In response to receiving hygiene kits, food, and school supplies from the JPMAP-National and JPMAP-MMSU, the beneficiaries responded with joy, enthusiasm, and gratitude.

The Coffee bHReak was one of the CSR's initiated events as part of the attempt to improve the students' mental health because they had been too focused on their academic lives. It was organized to provide students an opportunity to rest, refuel, and reenergize themselves on both academic and personal issues. For once, the students could unplug from their studies and connect with one another, expressing their problems, joys, and aspirations in life. It was a night of leisure for them as they took time to slow down, pause for a moment and recalibrate themselves to be more efficient and effective in their academic work and personal lives.

A Living Dreamer

~ Walt Disney.

n HR alumna proved to every one that dreams do really come true if we work hard for it, no matter how impossible it looks like. She is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resources Development Management batch 2019. She is a Cum

Laude, a Certified Human Resource Associate, and currently the Senior Recruitment Consultant of John Clements Consultants. As someone who enjoys communicating, willingness to learn, and working with diverse people, being in the People Management industry fits her well. Having years of professional experience, she handled projects or job requisitions from different clients – academe, BPO industry, financial services companies, banks, insurance industries, IT, Shared Services, etc. She greatly recognizes professional growth, which is why she's working toward a Master's degree at Divine Word College of Laoag. Behind her success were silent cries, countless breakdowns, sleepless nights, pressure from her environment, and disappointments. It has never been easy for Gina to become whoever she is now. Her lowest point when she

was still a student was during the nerve-wracking midterms and final examinations. Staying up all night to review, drinking coffee, and braving the pressure to finish all the projects and assignments on time. All of these are normal for college students, but for Gina, she was aiming for something huge. She accomplished something enormous and received the acclaim she earned when she graduated Cum Laude because of her tenacity, endurance, and resiliency. She will always be grateful and proud of herself for the rewards of her sacrificesGina also expressed her sincere gratitude to JPMAP for providing a platform to develop as a person and a professional.

“I believe that my 4 years of stay with the JPMAP have molded me into what I am now. I fell in love with the course and I don’t have any regrets,” she added.

“All your dreams can come trueifyouhavethe courage to pursue them.”

After she graduated, Gina took a step forward into the reality of adulthood. She faced a lot of struggles entering the new chapter of her life. The biggest turning point of her life was when she realized that she was already an adult with many responsibilities. Luckily, her parents supported her decision to try her luck working in Metro Manila. She had a hard time getting used to her new work environment.

Gina, who places importance on family life, has discovered that the most challenging aspect of her professional life is not the work itself but the time spent apart from her loved ones. She shared her relatable experiences and struggles, such as missing a lot of family celebrations, cooking food, doing laundry and groceries, budgeting, and, most especially, taking care of herself when you’re sick.

“Doing all of these,

I can consider myself already as a strong independent woman… I am sharing this with you because this is the reality when you’re planning to work away from home. It’s really exciting but really challenging,” Gina continued.

During her nearly three years as an HR Professional specializing in recruitment, she developed her talents and expanded her knowledge. Constantly bringing people together is one of her most fulfilling experiences.

Gina has learned that education does not end after graduation. Learning is an ongoing procedure. Gina described life is like a battlefield. She argued that there would be much smarter, more skillful, and more experienced individuals than you, which is just acceptable. Instead of viewing them as competitors or adversaries, you should seek

to emulate or surpass them.

“If you’re starting to lose faith or if you’re starting to doubt yourself, remember what your hard works are for. It’s okay to pause and breath, it’s okay to feel scared, it’s okay to have sudden episodes of breakdown but after that, make sure to stand tall again and continue pursuing what you want,” Gina advices the students who are struggling with their endeavors.

Don't give up on your dreams just because you're facing a lot of difficulties getting there or because you're terrified to try. The first step is the hardest, but you'll never get where you want to go without it.

Yes, getting started will be challenging, but the end result will be well worth the effort. Cheers, little dreamer!

JPMAPer by HeaRt

Ciara Mae Agasino is a brilliant and active graduating student of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resource Management residing in the City of Batac, Ilocos Norte.

With a keen interest in psychology and business management, she decided to take human resource management as her course at Mariano Marcos State University. For her, pursuing this career path allowed her to delve further into her passion and understand a wide range of topics about how the workforce influences an organization. However, like other students, Ciara has encountered numerous obstacles. Mountains after Mountains. Storms after Storms. Challenges after Challenges. Ciara has endured four years of a difficult road. Not only has she been juggling her roles as HR student and a JPMAPer, but also as a daughter, she has been responsible for a number of important tasks at home.

When she was in her junior and senior years of college, things started getting difficult. All of this is different from be-

fore the pandemic struck. Virtual classes replaced in-person classes and everyone was compelled to stay indoors.

“It was difficult to walk a fine line between learning and being a good daughter in the family,” Ciara mentioned.

Because of what is happening, she struggled to balance everything on her plate, which put her in a situation where things became so difficult. Many times, in her life she has made wrong decisions, but also made many good ones that have made her life better. She says that every choice she makes, no matter how big or small, can affect her life or the life of someone else. She realized how important it was to think about all the options and results of the things she did. Even though it was hard, she was able to complete all of her schoolwork, which gave her a great deal of satisfaction. She thought that all of her problems would be solved in the end. It might take a while, but it would happen. At the end of the road, rainbows will peak.

Being a JPMAPer for already four years, made Ciara’s college life more colorful and

exciting. Ciara is honored to be part of an organization that values and supports its member’s growth and development throughout their career. JPMAP helped her to grow and be fully equipped as a future HR professional in any industry she will be working. Before taking her final walk as an HR student, she will live by the organization's core values. These values will guide her in her thoughts, decisions, and actions, as well as help her towards career transformation. She is, without a doubt, a JPMAPer by HeaRt.

"In this fast-paced environment, it is important to give yourself a break. Ciara advises all aspiring HR professionals to "rest a while to recharge, then pursue career success and excellence in life."

No matter how hard life may get, how excruciating the pain may be, always remember that it's temporary and you will get through it all. Just believe in yourself that you will get there and trust God’s plan in every step you take. He will never fail you. Together, we will survive and will reach the place we are supposed to be.

Time after time, it is a great honor for me to serve the JPMAP MMSU. The JPMAP MMSU has significantly contributed to advancing and shaping the direction of HR education at the University. The organization's growing membership provided its members as a platform to connect and communicate, with a common purpose to educate and empower its members to enable them to advance from the academic to professional level as future people managers of society. We must collaborate closely if we are to raise the next generation of organization’s leaders. I think that working together will help us all find ways to address the issues that emerge from the increased demand for high-quality HR education. We have many good reasons to join together for more extensive and intensive engagements given the current momentum. The JPMAP MMSU will keep on offering a great network to deepen our awareness and establish closer ties with its members. Together, let's continue encouraging, developing, and leading others. Our cooperation and aspirations serve as the fuel for our efforts to deliver and complete our mandate.

God Bless JPMAP MMSU! Maraming salamat! Mabuhay!
