Tarland Bee Group would like to welcome you to Oldtown Walled Garden to view their new teaching facility where members will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. There is parking but you are asked to walk or cycle from the village if possible.If you have to travel by car, please book through the Food and Music Festival website as parking is very limited. Tarland Community Garden will be open for visitors. The garden opened in 2013 and is a Tarland Development Group project. It provides an inclusive and accessible community growing space for local residents. It has indoor (polytunnel) and outdoor raised beds for rent, plus communal planting areas including a soft fruit cage, fruit trees and a herb garden. It is a place for members to grow produce, learn, share and have fun. Pop along between 12noon-2pm for some freshly made soup served with a scone for £5pp.

Paella Escocia is an Aberdeenshire pop-up Spanish kitchen and street food vendor specialising in Spanish paella and tapas, using fresh, quality products sourced from a number of local and prestigious Spanish suppliers. They use large traditional pans imported from Spain and love having the opportunity to create and share their food.

Make a cosy home for minibeasts to hibernate or nest in to take home and put in your garden. Also find out about other ways to encourage these small creatures, essential in food chains as food for other wildlife, pollinators, pest controllers, waste disposal agents and more!

‘Food Waste Sessions’ will be running the duration of the Food Waste Pop-Up on Saturday 23rd September

12:00 to 2:00

The sessions will involve an ongoing conversation, interspersed with uplifting music, on Food Waste. What it

is and how it affects the environment.

If you are willing to converse or contribute to songs, music or poetry, please come along and join us. Children are especially welcome and fun activities will be provided.

AccordingtotheScottish Government,agriculture contributesaroundaquarterof Scotland’stotalgreenhousegas emissions,thereforeitcanbe seenasasignificant contributortoclimatechange. Conversely,farmingin Scotlandisasectorthatisone oftheworstaffectedbythe impactsofclimatechange,and farmersandcroftersare requiredtorapidlyadaptto copewiththeconsequencesof unseasonableweather,floods, droughts,andincreasedpest anddiseaserisks.Inthefaceof this,innovativefarmersacross Scotlandaretakingstepsto reducetheircarbonfootprint andmitigatefortheimpactsof climatechangeontheir farmingbusinesses.

Duringthisannualfarming discussion,wewillhearfrom oneoftheleadingfamilyfarm businessesthatare implementinglowcarbon technologiesontheirfarm.Dr ElaineBoothofEdnieFarms,

farmsherfamilyfarm alongsideherhusband.Aswell asgrowingoilseedrape, wheat,barley,andtrees,they alsohaveasucklerherd,and theirbusinesswontheRoyal NorthernAgriculturalSociety GoodFarmingPracticeAward in2007,whichrecognises successincombiningbusiness efficiencywithahighstandard ofenvironmental management.Elaineandher familyhaveawindturbine developmentandtheyhave expandedintootherrenewable energyinitiatives,including solarandbiomass.Elaineis keentoshareherfamily’s experienceandtoprovide encouragementforother farmersinworkingtowards carbonpositivefarming businesses.

AgricultureatSRUC.Henow worksforalargearableand eggproductionbusinessin Aberdeenshire.Alistairis currentlyundertakinga NuffieldScholarship,with supportfromtheMacRobert Trust.AsAlistairexplains: “Typicallyover60%ofthecarbon footprintofaneggisfromtheuseof southAmericansoya.Thislarge contributionisaproblemforegg producers,butalsocreatesabig opportunityforthereductionof emissions,throughthereductionor eliminationofsoyaindiets.Iwill lookatarangeofalternative proteins,reviewingtheirsuitability fordrivingnetzeroeggproduction fromaneconomic,nutritionaland carbonfootprintperspective.”
