With 2022 Programmatic, Philanthropic, and Organizational Highlights

Transforming Pediatric Healthcare

The origin story of JoyRx, the mission delivery of Children’s Cancer Association, formed on the principle that kids need more than medicine to heal as they endure the effects of treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses. From one family’s experience, a 27-year journey has provided over 1 million program service interactions to children nationwide.

Nearly three decades ago, the Ellis Family changed the conversation in pediatric healthcare at a time when no one else was talking about Joy in the same breath as cancer. Today, we are empowering hundreds of thousands of kids to find emotional healing through Joy with the support of our 32 and counting healthcare partner facilities across the United States.

In our fiscal year 2022, the number of JoyRx kids served grew by over 100% from the year prior, reaching more than 21,000 children around the country. However, there is still so much more need. While our teams deliver Joy to kids daily, greater reach is key to truly redefine what healing looks like and to transform the pediatric healthcare experience everywhere. Our exponential growth demonstrates the tremendous need for our programming and what we’ve seen since the inception of our organization — Joy heals. The ability to provide what every parent, child, or caregiver so desperately hopes for — a little Joy during the darkest time of a child’s life. Moments of singing, laughing, and talking remind us how human experiences are what every child deserves — no matter what illness takes away from them.

Leading JoyRx to Exponential Growth

This year, JoyRx saw 100% year over year growth in program reach. What factors do you attribute to the exponential growth?

There are several things that came into play this year, which led to aggressive program growth. The first was our ability to expand our digital-based programming in meaningful, highly personalized ways. This created tremendous recognition in our value as a support entity to hospitals, allowing us to establish substantially more partnerships and gain access to children and families in exponential ways. The more accessible our programming is, the easier it is for our interactions to become a common occurrence in how kids are experiencing treatment across the country.

What types of partnerships will JoyRx need to create in the coming years to ensure sustainable growth?

Deepening ties to the music industry will be important. So much of what we do is about providing music as medicine to kids who cannot engage with it otherwise. To create transformational moments for them, we need strong partnerships that will compliment the work we are doing on the ground in unique ways. Expanding our technology and platform partnerships will also be important as we evolve how kids

experience on-demand programming. And ultimately and most importantly, continued expansion of hospital partnerships. The work we do would not be possible without our provider partners.

What has been the biggest learning or takeaway from opening the new satellite office in Austin — how will that inform future regional office expansions?

The biggest learning is not anything we haven’t always known — every market is unique. We can replicate our programming and ensure the model maintains the highest level of design integrity across the US, but you can’t cookie cutter expansion. It’s very important to understand how each new market operates as a community. To recognize variances in culture, in demographics, in scale and size, and priorities. We know our mission resonates, and we know there is tremendous need for our programming — but engaging stakeholders and communities we serve looks a bit different everywhere we go.

As the organization expands rapidly, how do you see growth impacting the organization as a whole, and how are we investing in and supporting the team in the current environment?

The most important element of our organization is our people. We simply cannot do what we do without our staff. We spend a lot of time investing in creating the best culture we can — always looking at benefits improvement, professional development, self-care, and the intangibles that mean a lot. Not growing too quickly is important. Balanced growth allows us to constantly check our aspirations against our capacity. The last couple of years have been challenging for many reasons, and honestly, while we’ve had tremendous growth in some respects, we have not taken on as much as is possible because we simply were not willing to sacrifice sustainability and long-term success for short-term metrics. We are growing, and this of course will impact the organization, so being comfortable with continuous feedback from our people is imperative. Creating the best culture you can takes patience.

Leading JoyRx to Exponential Growth

What excites you most about the coming year?

We’re getting much more precise at connecting shorter-term goals to long-term vision. We truly have the ability now to see our year-over-year plans adding color to a bigger picture, and the picture has great clarity. I do believe that while we are a 27-year-old organization, we are just getting started. We made some investments this past year, and watching the impact of those investments present themselves in the next year or two will be tremendous. New markets, new partnerships, new ways of delivering our programs, new ways of measuring our program impact…all these things are incredibly inspiring, because it means we are doing more and doing better for the families we serve. It may sound sort of ridiculous, but everything excites me about the coming year.

What brings you Joy?

My greatest Joy, as is for most people, is my family. Watching my son grow and seeing him learning so much and developing his own interests and perspectives on things. Traveling with my husband. Working with our team and our leadership volunteers who have passion for what we do and constantly bring intelligence, humor, and inspired thinking to our efforts. Being in our business of Joy cannot always be Joyful, but it is always fulfilling.

You just finished your first year as Board of Directors Chair. What are you most proud of?

It has been a year of learning and growth as the Chair, especially given the transformational nature of the team and the business. But Danielle is a best-in-class Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with incredible expansion goals and she has tremendous operational and leadership skillsets; I’m very proud of the relationship she and I have nurtured. That relationship enables Danielle to truly empower her team to drive the business forward, while the Board of Directors (BoD) can focus our impact as a voice of council, support, and unwavering dedication to the JoyRx mission.

As the organization expands nationally, how will this impact the Board of Directors?

Given the close connection with Danielle and her Executive Leadership team, it’s critical that as we onboard new BoD members, we look at almost surgical capabilities across our key new markets needing to be served by JoyRx, the mission delivery of Children’s Cancer Association. I’m thrilled that our most recent onboarded members reflect that intention.

Leading JoyRx to Exponential Growth

You’ve been involved with JoyRx | Children’s Cancer Association for a very long time. How has the organization changed in those years?

I remember dropping my daughter off with a babysitter at age 3 for my first Children’s Cancer Association gala, and she’s now 21 and graduating from college! In that time, the organization transitioned from a local grassroots, mainly in-hospital program to an association with accountabilities that both require and empower a national expansion.

Perhaps most profoundly different is the growth and expansion of digital tools and platforms. JoyRx | Children’s Cancer Association has the unique opportunity to lead in this space, and its strategy prioritizes this strength to support our mission in serving more kids nationally through our JoyRx programming. Yet as much as JoyRx | Children’s Cancer Association has evolved, it has stayed the same in one way: our mission. It remains unwavering that we deliver moments of JoyRx to sick kiddos and their families.

What are you looking forward to most as you lead the Board and support the organization through a new year of exponential growth?

I took on this role with two initiatives in mind to support the CEO in her transformative expansion of JoyRx: Board Diversity and Board Voice. I am proud of the efforts made here in year one, but this next year I look forward to furthering both initiatives.

It’s critical that we take the time to search nationally for members with capabilities, backgrounds, and cultures that reflect the kids and the families we serve.

We also need to ensure that every member, including those on our Pacific Northwest Leadership Council, our Young Professionals Council, and our Austin Leadership Council feel included in our mission-wide conversations, take part in our Board-sponsored events, are clear in our priorities, and really know their voice matters during every minute of volunteer time.

How do you find Joy in your life?

My family (including my fur kids) is my deepest place of Joy. In watching my daughter navigate early adulthood and making choices, I see her absorbing what impact volunteering and service can make, and it’s incredible seeing her put that into practice. I also rely on nature to nurture my Joy, so being outdoors as much as possible is important to me. I love activities such as running the trails, (trying to) garden, skiing in the winter, and my newest effort, raising 30,000+ worker bees and two queens in my backyard!

Thank you to our partner Anomaly for helping us make our brand vision a reality during this time of massive growth and expansion.

We couldn’t do this important work without the generosity of our donors and partners. At JoyRx, we are proud of the mission impact our donors have funded over the last 27 years, illustrated in testimonials on third-party sites like Great Nonprofits, where we are a toprated organization. We are also a proud Candid (formerly GuideStar) Platinum-rated charity and receive three stars on Charity Navigator.

“Thank you all so much for what your organization has done for Quinlyn and our family. We have enjoyed all of you so much, and especially Delilah! She has truly been a gift, and we have made a lifelong friend in Delilah. She has always been very special to Quinlyn, and we are so happy she will be sharing her kind heart with other children. Again, thank you for all that you do!”

Again, and always, thank you for sharing your gift with my girl!”

JoyRx Music is Expanding!

JoyRx Music continues to experience significant growth nationwide, expanding our program offering to 32 healthcare partner facilities in 15 states!

Our pivot to grow our music services during the COVID-19 pandemic has proven invaluable to our pediatric partners. JoyRx Music — through our Digital Live offering of one-on-one virtual music sessions and concerts — has created nearly 7,000 musicbased interactions for more than 5,500 children. These interactions profoundly impact the pediatric healthcare experience by elevating a child’s mood, relieving the perception of pain, and reducing anxiety. We have taken our kid-prescribed music services to a whole new level! Making JoyRx Music accessible to every seriously ill child across the nation is a never-ending focus, and our exponential growth is only limited by our resources. JoyRx Music is on its way to living within the standard of the pediatric healthcare experience, and we know it heals; we’ve seen it.

JoyRx Music

For more than 27 years, JoyRx Music has drawn on the universal power of music to energize and lift spirits. Our flagship program helps kids and teens find Joy during stressful and painful experiences related to extended hospitalizations and treatments for life-threatening illness.

With kid-prescribed music medicine, our highly trained JoyRx musicians engage children of all ages and diagnoses, allowing them to choose the musical experience that best fits their current emotional place and desired mood.

Through three modes of delivery, we reach children with in-person bedside visits (Live), virtual music sessions (Digital Live), and 24/7 On Demand music performances and lessons.

“We loved seeing James’s face light up as he danced and sang along. Our whole family of eight was in the room watching together, and all five of James’s siblings participated in the singing and dancing — it was a bright spot in a hard time. We’ve loved our other interactions with the team, and it’s great to have something all of my kids can participate in to bring a little Joy to a difficult situation.”

JAIMI

When engaging in person, children can choose to watch a live music session, request a song, sing along, participate in music lessons, or grab an instrument to join in — whatever feels right and brings Joy to them in that moment.

With virtual and online offerings, we can reach more children

who are undergoing treatment at home or within a healthcare facility. We partner with hospital staff to integrate live music into their existing entertainment systems or through real-time, one-on-one virtual interactions. In addition, we have on-demand offerings available 24/7, with exclusive artist performances, music lessons, games, and more.

JoyRx Mentorship

JoyRx Mentorship fosters trusted companionship to inspire laughter and distraction during an isolating time. Our trained, adult volunteer JoyRx Mentors provide emotional support to children in treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses, and they offer critical support to parents who endure the hardships of hospital stays with their child.

“Growing up, I really admired my sister Natasha’s JoyRx Mentor, Shannon. I always told myself I wanted to be like her someday. Many years later, I decided to become a mentor myself, and I’m so grateful I was able to be matched with Dee. Seeing the change in her smile when I came into the room was priceless. I remember how Shannon brought light to Natasha and to my family in a dark time, and I am grateful I could play a part in bringing that light to Dee.”

sister to Natasha, 2000 – 2009, JoyRx Mentor to Dee

Many of our matches have taken place virtually this past fiscal year. The hospitals’ ongoing limited visitor policies due to COVID-19 encouraged our JoyRx Mentors and their mentees to get creative as they continue to show up in engaging ways — they chat over video calls, create art projects to send one another, play online games together, exchange pen-pal letters, and more.

Recently, restrictions have lessened and we’re back to some in-hospital matches. We are cautiously optimistic the JoyRx Mentorship program will fully resume our services in the coming months.

Despite COVID-19 safety restrictions, we were still able to (safely!) reach kids through JoyRx Mentorship activities and virtual connections.

Our mentors will resume hospital visits with bags full of toys, games, and activities to help their young friends laugh and bring a smile, relieve their stress and anxiety, and dispel their feelings of loneliness and isolation. For parents, these visits offer a moment of respite, allowing a moment for themselves, whether that’s to take a walk, grab some coffee, go to the gym, spend time with their other children, or simply take an opportunity to step away and breathe.

Mentorship matches can last multiple years, and often, the bonds of friendship are still strong long after the final treatment.

JoyRx Nature

JoyRx Nature provides an essential connection to the natural world. Nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake, JoyRx Nature’s Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin provides children in treatment and their extended families with a place of peace in a calming environment.

The Caring Cabin is an extraordinary destination for families to relax, explore, and create once-ina-lifetime memories. Designed with the needs of seriously ill children in mind, the Caring Cabin lends a much-needed mental break to recharge during or after treatment.

This no-cost, five-day retreat restores energy and provides a needed respite for families battling pediatric illness.

“The experience at the Caring Cabin was important to our family as not only was it a trip that Wesley got to look forward to and talk about for the last few months, helping get him through chemo treatments and being sick, but it allowed him to have a weekend away that he felt relaxed and at ease and didn’t think once of his cancer. We left feeling like we had filled our tanks and could now conquer the next several months of chemo.”

Learn more about the origins and impact of the Caring Cabin

In the winter of 2021, the Caring Cabin closed for some muchneeded repairs and updates. Though this meant fewer families were able to visit the Cabin this fiscal year, the improvements ensure the Caring Cabin will provide a safe, sustainable structure to visit for many years to come. The repairs included improvements to the roof, siding, doors, windows, and chimney, and a general aesthetic update with new interior paint.

The past year brought many enhancements to the Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin to ensure as many families as possible may experience the healing power of nature during a trying time. To allow more families to visit the Caring Cabin, we have lowered the eligibility age to three years old (from age five) and enhanced our assistance offerings of gas and grocery cards for families who might need a little extra help getting to or while at the Cabin.

“There is no greater feeling than walking into a child’s hospital room and seeing their eyes light up when they see all the games and goodies in my Mentorship toy bag. You instantly see the weight of endless doctor and nurse visits taken from their shoulders, only to allow them a few hours of fun, laughter, and Joy that every child deserves. My 15 years volunteering for JoyRx has been nothing short of amazing. I’m honored to be associated with their incredible staff and volunteers who truly deliver in their mission of prescribing Joy.”

As a mentor to seven different children over the span of 15 years, Bill Grange has made an extraordinary difference in our community and in the world of JoyRx. Not only has Bill been an incredible volunteer, but for many years he has passed along his wisdom and served as a mentor to our mentors, speaking at our JoyRx Mentorship trainings. Over the years, Bill has also raised thousands of dollars for JoyRx programs, and he has won a few different awards as a standout volunteer and philanthropist. Most recently, Bill won the 2022 Oregon REALTORS® Good Neighbor Award because of his work with JoyRx. His humility and heart make him truly one of a kind, and we are so grateful for his continued work as a mentor to kids and teens in the hospital!

Employees continually raise their hands to volunteer with Children’s Cancer Association — they are passionate about bringing Joy to the lives of children and their families during challenging times.”

We love companies who care, especially when their amazing employees donate their time and talents to make a difference for seriously ill kids and teens. Columbia Bank employees are encouraged to use company time to help their community, and they have been regularly volunteering with JoyRx for years. Every time they step up to meet a volunteer need, their group shows up with enthusiasm, energy, and efficiency. Bob Lum

With a deep-rooted respect for the power of music, Bob Lum, President of PRO-ED, Inc. has been a pioneer for JoyRx setting stakes in Austin, Texas. From the early inception days of expanding our program offering in the Lone Star State, Bob has volunteered hundreds of hours at the forefront of every fundraising effort, partner meeting, and JoyRx Music event to ensure the organization has been supported.

“When I saw what JoyRx Music was doing with kids suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses, it spoke to me as a lover of music. From the lens of someone who has seen how music can transform a room and as someone living in a community who thrives on music, JoyRx felt like a good fit for Austin, and I wanted to be involved in order to bring it to kids locally.”

“Music is so powerful. I used to play music whenever Lian was in the hospital. I even played classical music while I was pregnant with him. Music is part of his soul, and through music, I can see his healing. JoyRx helps him feel that in his soul.”

In 2018, JoyRx Music began service at St. David’s Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, filling a critical gap in music program services for hospitalized kids and their families. Our program has since expanded to eight pediatric care facilities across the state, reaching nearly 8,000 Texas children last fiscal year.

Austin Leadership Council

As the impact of JoyRx reigns in Texas, we are thrilled to introduce an extension of our homegrown Oregon governance with the new Austin Leadership Council. Formed by a group of local professionals who believe in the healing power of music, the committee champions our mission to bring JoyRx Music to more children — one song, one strum of a ukulele, one drum beat at a time!

In February of 2022, JoyRx hired the organization’s first Texas-based staff, operating out of a downtown Austin office. This new office marks the second JoyRx business location, with headquarters based in Portland, Oregon, thus scaling our ability to reach more local children through live, bedside music experiences, performances, and sing-alongs.

Communities Inspired by Joy

A February Full of Joy

In February, teams from various Nike departments participated in their annual community engagement campaign, raising more than $408,000 to create Joy for seriously ill kids and their families. Corporate Joy Makers all over the nation sold paper hearts and ran special promotions benefitting JoyRx | Children’s Cancer Association. The Say Yes to Adventure winter car giveaway winner got their pick of seven cars from Dick Hannah Dealerships.

As the world began to lift gathering restrictions, the JoyRx community was ready to safely return to in-person events and fundraising. Here are a few highlights from 2022.

Bringing JoyRx Music to Austin, Texas

In March, JoyRx Music partnered with SXSW and five-piece indie rock band Mt. Joy to bring the power of music to the local Austin community through a one-day charity beneficiary concert with 15,000 attendees. Music lovers enjoyed the four-hour outdoor concert, featuring performances by Emily Wolfe, Susannah Joffe, and Houndmouth, while engaging with a JoyRx and Gibson Guitars instrument petting zoo.

Our signature concert series, Live from the Heart, brought Joy to Austin in April with an intimate concert from four-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jason Isbell. The evening also included a live auction for guests to experience luxurious packages, all while creating Joy for seriously ill kids and their families. The Austin community showed up in a big way, raising more than $225,000 to continue our mission to reach more kids around the nation.
