At CCA, we are JOY SEEKERS. And holding this FY17 Community Investment Report in your hands, although you may not realize it yet, YOU are a JOY SEEKER too
For the last 22 years, we at CCA have asked ourselves repeatedly: what can JOY do?
• What if seriously ill children, especially those with cancer, had an equal opportunity to experience the JOYS of childhood?
• What if the psychological effects of a serious illness could be eradicated with JOY?
• What if we could clinically demonstrate the power of JOY to reduce the perception of pain, anxiety, and stress?
CCA is the only organization working to position JOY as best practice in pediatric hospitals across the nation by delivering innovative programs that transform a moment with music, nature, friendship, and resources. And in the decades since CCA was founded around my kitchen table, we’ve grown to be one of the largest children's healthcare organizations in the Pacific Northwest, with bedside programming in children’s hospitals and medical facilities in Oregon and Washington, in Boston, Massachusetts, and coming soon, in Austin, Texas.
In FY17, CCA focused on delivering exceptional quality, mission impact growth, and evidence-based analytics and results. Here are some highlights:
• New assessment tools for both MyMusicRx® and the Chemo Pal® Mentor Program were developed to better measure impact, intended outcomes, and the quality of service delivered
• 49% more kids and teens were served by CCA programs how, when, and where they prefer. Our teams delivered nearly 92,000 service interactions
• We exceeded our total revenue goal of $4.96M by over 23%, with extraordinary in-kind donations, pushing total revenue to 6.11M. At the same time, we invested a record $4.37M into our programs, an increase of 27% over last fiscal year.
• Our disciplined approach to financial management, growth, and commitment to compliance sustained CCA’s exemplary ratings from all three major ratings agencies: Guidestar, Charity Navigator, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance
• For the 16th consecutive year, we received an unqualified (A+) independent audit report
As we head into FY18, CCA is laying the foundation for long term sustainability. We are investing in social impact modelling, lean innovation, and exploring highly scalable solutions in ways never before possible to some of the most compelling challenges kids and teens battling serious illness face today.
At CCA, we stand for JOY. Thanks for standing beside us.

FINANCES AT A GLANCE
INVESTMENT INTO CCA
Throughout the year, our team focused on continuing to increase revenues while controlling expenses, positioning CCA to move forward with continued, measured growth in FY18 and beyond. All this while providing joy and support to families in need directly reflects the innovation, prudent management, and resolve that CCA staff and leadership have demonstrated year after year. Congratulations on another outstanding accomplishment!
CCA is a trusted organization that has been recognized for over 20 years as an excellent steward of financial resources. A copy of our latest financial statement is available at JoyRx.org/About/Financials. Due to the thorough work of the CCA finance team and senior management, the FY17 audit, which was performed by Gary McGee & Co. LLP, resulted in our 16th year of unqualified (A+) independent audit reports Of those, this is also our 6th consecutive year earning the coveted No Material Weakness letter.

Music | MyMusicRx ®
Two decades ago CCA began delivering the healing power of music to the bedsides of children and teens facing cancer and other serious illness. Today, our trained specialists engage hospitalized children of all ages and diagnoses, playing music for and with them to reduce stress, anxiety, and perception of pain.
In FY17, MyMusicRx expanded service to reach record numbers of hospitalized kids and teens. Locally, we added service at Ronald McDonald East House, in the OHSU and Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel NICUs, and the Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel. Nationally, this was our first full year of service at Boston Children’s Hospital, the #1 ranked children’s hospital in the country.
WHAT’S NEXT: In FY18, MyMusicRx will begin service delivery at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Washington and St. David’s Children’s Hospital in Austin, TX.

Some of the most poignant and memorable moments over the past several months involved music or song, and thanks to MyMusicRx, this was one of them…
When Isa moved out of the PICU, Chris, a CCA MyMusicRx Specialist, slowly and respectfully connected with her. After getting her trach removed, Isa sang several songs, her favorite being "Lost Boy" by Ruth B. I was fighting back tears the first time she sang this with Chris… We are grateful to Chris for his persistence and for the gift of this experience.

Nature | Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin™
The Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin provides children and teens that are in treatment, along with their families, an extraordinary place to retreat, relax, and create oncein-a-lifetime memories outside of the hospital environment. Nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake, the Caring Cabin provides an essential health connection to nature and healing.
After 11 years and visits from over 4,000 family members, CCA undertook and completed a needed refresh of the Caring Cabin in FY17. Led by Anna Kimmel of Finley Grace Design, the 8-month project included a kitchen makeover, updated interior design throughout the house, roof repairs, and new outdoor features like an accessible fire pit.
WHAT’S NEXT: With the refresh project complete, we look forward to a full Caring Cabin calendar in FY18.

At the Caring Cabin, we were filled with gratitude and joy because of how loved we felt being there and what an honor it was to spend time at such a sacred place…
This was a time for us to just relax and retreat together and be intentional about celebrating Gideon and all that we’ve been through as a family. It was emotional at times, knowing all of the other families who’ve been through similar experiences and thinking about the pain our family has endured because of cancer.
THE DISTERHOFF FAMILY
Friendship | Chemo Pal® Mentor Program
CCA’s award-winning Chemo Pal mentors play games, listen to music, share hobbies, or simply offer the comfort of companionship, relieving the loneliness and isolation experienced by children in treatment. A Chemo Pal mentor can also give parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, talk with doctors, or spend time with their other children.
In FY17, CCA proudly began offering Chemo Pal mentors to kids who are inpatient for an extended stay at Shriner’s Hospital for Children. We also streamlined the background check and paperwork process for prospective mentors, continuing to ensure the highest level of safety for kids and teens at all partner hospitals.
WHAT’S NEXT: In FY18, we’ll implement new, rigorous assessments to better understand the Chemo Pal program’s impact on both families and mentors. Learnings will inform program innovations and ensure the highest quality service continues to be delivered.

Robert's Chemo Pal, Justin, has become part of our family forever… we'll never be able to thank him enough for making this long, 3 1/2 year treatment plan bearable.
Justin has a ton in common with our son and they have a terrific bond. Justin also battled childhood cancer, twice. He knows all about LEGOs and Pokemon, both very important subjects to my child. My son says all the time that he wishes Justin was his real big brother. Justin gives me opportunities to eat or shower or return dozens of voicemails and make arrangements with Robert's teachers to get his schoolwork on track. It is so helpful to have another adult there at the hospital who loves my child.
SYDNEY, ROBERT'S MOM
Resources | Link
CCA’s Link program takes the profound emotional and financial hardships of serious pediatric illness head on, engaging a network of caring people and organizations to provide families with essential needs assistance and support, building resilience during a difficult time. Some of that assistance has included bathroom renovations for wheelchair accessibility; family photo shoots; gas cards and car repairs to safely transport families to medical treatments; concert tickets for a needed night out; holiday gift support; and special wishes not met by other organizations.
Link saw a 24% increase of in-kind goods and services donated from businesses and individuals in FY17, allowing us to serve 28% more families than in the previous year.
WHAT’S NEXT: Link will continue to build meaningful community and hospital partnerships to help us meet the evolving, critical needs of families.

I really appreciate the Link program providing Irving with oxygen for our upcoming trip. We had everything set and paid last year to go to Mexico, but the day before our departure Irving got really sick and was admitted into the hospital. He was discharged a few days later on hospice care and we were told that he would only live a few more days to a week.
Almost a year later he is doing so much better... we want to take every opportunity to enjoy time with him. That is why this help means so much for us.

Community Outreach & Education
2,846 amazing volunteers donated more than 14,000 hours of their valuable time to CCA’s programs and events in FY17, a value of more than $341,000. CCA’s volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization: they mentor children, share their musical talents, staff community events, host toy drives, and serve on our leadership boards.
CCA volunteers make a powerful difference in the lives of children in need. In return, they often find their own lives changed by the extraordinary spirit of the courageous kids and families we serve.
WHAT’S NEXT: Look for the 5th edition of the Kids’ Cancer Pages, CCA’s comprehensive resource guide for families, distributed free of charge to pediatric hospitals in all 50 states.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:
• Chemo Pal® Mentor: Become a trusted, caring friend to a child in treatment
• Hallway Harmonics: Bring your musical talents to Portland’s hospital hallways
• Events: Volunteer with friends to staff one of our many community events
• CCA House Parties: Team build with colleagues while helping a CCA-served family with home and cleaning projects
• Caring Cabin: Travel to the Coast with your corporate group and complete grounds maintenance projects to help our families have a more comfortable stay
• Packs of Joy / Hope for the Holidays: Support our kids and families during the the new school year or the holidays
• Share Your Day: Donate your birthday to CCA on Facebook
It's easy to get people involved with CCA because I believe so much in the organization's mission and what you do for seriously ill kids and families. CCA is amazing and I really enjoy being a part of something bigger than my everyday life.
