Joy Christian Fellowship (JCF) is a nondenominational, multisite church with campuses in northern New Jersey and New York City. With a predominantly Korean/ Asian-American congregation, the name of our church is significant as it is based on the founding vision of bringing God’s abundant joy to a generation that are in need of God's love. It is the story of the prodigal son in

Luke 15 unfolding in a generation of people who once rejected God and chose to make our own happiness apart from Him, but have returned to a loving Father who gladly welcomes us home and rejoices over us.

JCF exists to glorify God by encouraging people to pursue a deep intimacy with Christ and live our lives in

accordance with His Word and by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are a family of faith that desires to build a gospel-centered community so that we may care for one another and love our neighbors. Three Core Values In order to nurture a community that is being transformed by the gospel so that we can be transforming agents, we desire to be followers of Christ who passionately pursue intimacy with God, are connected to a collective Christian community, and discover God’s calling on our lives. These three core values of intimacy, community, and calling work from the inside out as three concentric circles: • Intimacy – To love the Lord with all our hearts is our highest calling and the spiritual spring from which everything flows.

• Community – As spiritual life does not happen in isolation, God has given us the church so that we can be vitally connected in relationship with other believers through service, fellowship, and ministry to one another.

• Calling – We desire to discover and pursue our calling from God in order to bear much fruit for His kingdom so that as followers of Christ, we are not just inwardly focused but are powerfully impacting the world both locally and globally.

Strategic Areas JCF is committed to advancing the gospel and expanding God’s kingdom with our focus and commitment to the marketplace and world missions.

• The Marketplace – We believe that God has called us to bring reformation to every arena of society and transformation of the marketplace by being Christ’s ambassadors in our spheres of influence, including business/finance, government/law, education, media, and arts/entertainment. We encourage everyone to see their workplace as their missions field and to bring their faith and Christ’s values to the marketplace, changing the culture around them and winning their peers, colleagues, managers, and others to Christ.

• World Missions – The gospel of Christ compels us to joyfully share and make disciples of all nations. We challenge and encourage our church to give of themselves to world missions both in preaching the gospel and bringing humanitarian help.

Our Sunday Worship Services Joy Christian Fellowship is One Church, Two Locations.

The Englewood campus has three worship services and the Manhattan campus has one worship service.

JCF worship services can be described as blended contemporary.

Each congregation has a dedicated campus pastor and worship director, along with a rotating worship team. Congregants are encouraged to receive prayer from the prayer ministry team and spend time in fellowship after service.

Our History In the Beginning After leading the English Ministry of a first-generation Korean church for several years, JCF's founding pastor Danny Han became convinced that the future of the Asian-American church belonged to independent second-generation leadership as this would allow them to take ownership of the church and win their generation for Christ. There were many unfortunate stories of acrimony when English ministries wanted to pursue independence, but JCF became one of a handful of churches in the country that was planted with the

blessing of the first-generation church. JCF took this extraordinary beginning to be an affirmation of God’s will for the church, and with an initial 50 members, JCF was created in November 1999.

____________________________________ Spiritual Nakedness: FORT LEE, NJ (1999)

JCF held its first worship service in a small office in Fort Lee, NJ. As it stood spiritually naked and vulnerable having separated from the protective prayers of the first-generation church, JCF began holding Friday night 11

intercessory prayer meetings where God impressed upon the church to look ahead to the future generations.

In 2000, JCF moved into the Community Seventh-day Adventist Church in Englewood, NJ where the church ministered to the needs of the surrounding community.

After growing to 90 members over the next year, JCF’s growth came to a sudden halt. Through a series of revelations from the Holy Spirit, JCF embarked on a new journey of seeking intimacy with God. The Holy Spirit brought the power of prophecy and healing to the church during a winter retreat in 2003, as members were encouraged to pursue intimacy with the Lord and encountered spiritual breakthroughs. Ironically, as the church focused on intimacy with God and not on numerical growth, the church started to grow.

By this time, JCF had outgrown the Adventist Church, so the church moved its worship services and operations to the Presbyterian Church at Tenafly, NJ in 2003. In the continued pursuit of intimacy, Marveling Place began,

which provided a time of soaking in God’s presence through prayer and worship. Other initiatives included the start of a second worship service, early morning prayer meetings, the first Sunday school, and local youth retreats.

In 2004, JCF furthered its vision of raising the next generation by organizing Joyful Noise, a conference where hundreds of youth in the region came together to celebrate the Father’s unconditional love and joy over them.

JCF also organized a missions conference with George Verwer, the founder of Operation Mobilization, to give vision and bring about global missions awareness. _____________________________________________

Second Campus:

As the church continued to grow, JCF began to consider the concept of a multisite church. After much prayer and research, God gave confirmations that the first satellite location would be in Edgewater, NJ, which was virtually a city without a single church. JCF believed that the church needed to go where people were, and so JCF started a second campus in Edgewater with about 70 members. Within three years, the congregation grew to over 200 members.

ber 2009 at Mercy College in midtown Manhattan, where the weekly attendance grew to 70 people. The foundation of the campus rested on God's promises for the city and from the power of intercession. Many unemployed attendees received jobs; others gained physical and inner healings; and many others have come to deeper relationships with Christ and in community.

By January 2009, after many confirmatory words and visions, several members volunteered to lead the effort of planting a third campus in Manhattan as they desired to see the Holy Spirit move in their lives and through New York City. Overcoming the difficulties of finding a place to worship, JCF held its first worship service in Septem-

A New Home:

ENGLEWOOD, NJ (2013)

Launched in 2010, the Joy Home Campaign had a threefold purpose to: (a) honor God, (b) enable JCF to align itself with God’s will “to win our generation and prepare the next,” and (c) serve as a spiritual journey for its members to see how God would both supernaturally provide a new house of worship and teach, move, and meet members individually.

Many expressed doubts as there were no new churches in the Bergen County area. But after three years, God led JCF to the Englewood Assembly of God, a church in a season of transition as well, who agreed to sell its property to JCF. After JCF found its new home, the leadership began to focus on how to build and invest in the next generation. The first step was to unify the church, and the difficult decision was made to suspend the Edgewater service and bring the Tenafly and Edgewater campuses together for the purpose of strengthening the foundation of JCF as a body in its new home. JCF was blessed to have inherited a place that had already been faithfully worshiping the Lord, and the new Englewood services clearly have the presence of the Lord.

Our Church Governance JCF is a Council of Elder-led church, of which elders are elected by the congregation in accordance with the Bylaws which govern JCF. Elders are called to skillfully and lovingly lead the flock; feed the flock as according to the Scriptures; care for the flock in the form of love, prayer, ministry, and adept church management; and protect the flock from harmful influences and beliefs. As a group, they represent the best interests of the church while empowering the pastoral staff to run the daily ministry operations of the church.

The Deacon Fellowship was established in 2016 to relieve and assist the Council of Elders in meeting ministry and administrative needs of the church. In addition, the Stewardship Oversight Committee assists the Council of Elders in overseeing legal and financial matters pertaining to the church.

Based upon biblical principles and practices, the Bylaws provide general guidance on the organization, governance, and operation of the church. However, the ultimate authority for JCF’s organization, governance, and operation is the Bible.

Our Facilities & Properties In 2013, JCF purchased its current New Jersey-based campus in a residential area of Englewood, NJ. The campus spans 1.75 acres and includes the following buildings:

Great Adventure Building – Situated directly next door to the Main Sanctuary, this building houses the worship room and classrooms for grades K through 5.

Main Sanctuary Building – All three Sunday worship services at the Englewood campus convene in this building which has a seating capacity of 300 people. This building also includes the fellowship hall and main kitchen.

Chosen Generation Building – This building houses the worship room and classrooms for grades 6 through 12.

The “White House” – Aptly named for its white exterior, the furthermost building of the Englewood campus serves as the offices for our pastoral and administrative staff.

The initial purchase as well as the ongoing renovations, maintenance, and capital improvements to the current facilities are overseen by the tireless efforts of JCF's Building Committee. They are currently working on the construction of a playground area for the children. A long-term plan to increase the capacity of both the Great Adventure and Chosen Generation Buildings is underway.

As of the summer of 2015, the Manhattan campus meets at the AMC Loews 34th Street in the heart of midtown Manhattan. A church office was also secured close by to provide a working environment for the Manhattan campus pastor and administrative staff.

Church Life Intimacy: Prayer & Worship Nights Throughout the year, JCF hosts Intercessory Prayer, Midweek Prayer, and Worship Nights to seek greater intimacy with the Lord. Intercessory Prayer meetings bring the church together to give thanks to God and pray on behalf of our church, nation, and loved ones. Midweek Prayer is a weekly meeting where members come to intercede for one another and for the church – it is often filled with worship and prayer and rest in the Lord.

Worship Nights are hosted regularly throughout the year to sing praises to God and declare Him King over our lives. All congregants are encouraged to attend so that we can continue to center our lives in Christ.

Community Life: TLC (Small Groups) We believe that transformational spiritual growth happens best in a loving Christ-centered community. Tender Loving Care (TLC) is the name of our small groups. We gather weekly in groups of 8-15 people with a shared goal to pursue God, love one another, and serve God. We build meaningful Christ-centered friendships, and we know that when we gather and live for Christ, God tends to show up and do amazing things. The vast majority of JCF members are part of a TLC group.

Spiritual Formation JCF provides classes and organizes conferences to spur the spiritual formation of our members. Throughout the year, we host Bible studies and various topical classes (e.g., Alpha, Crown Financial, Experiencing God, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, etc.) for our members. JCF also invites speakers or partners with other organizations to host seminars and conferences for our members and community. Members are always encouraged to develop their base of knowledge in their faith.

Next Generation (Children & Youth Ministry) JCF seeks to raise up the next generation of worshipers and lovers of God, led by teachers under the leadership of our Christian education director. Designated nursery care areas and children’s ministry (3- to 6-year-olds) are available in both congregations. Children and youth ministries for all age groups are available in the Englewood campus.

Missions 29

Missions Philosophy Missions has always been part of JCF’s DNA. Because we believe that each local congregation is responsible for doing its part to share God’s love with those who need it most, JCF is committed to taking the gospel to places where true worship does not exist. Through our commitment to give at least one-third of our tithes and offerings toward missions, God has been able to do wonderful things through our various partnerships.

JCF seeks to be a church that reaches out to all who are suffering and lost, ministering to them with the love of Christ. We believe that each follower of Jesus Christ has a personal responsibility to proactively share their faith with the gifts and talents the Lord has given them. Thus, a large part of JCF’s missions focus is on mobilizing our members for the Great Commission, creating opportunities for the church to get involved in what God is doing.

In order to effectively utilize our resources, JCF believes in strategically partnering with ministries and organizations functioning in those areas to which God is calling us.

Local Missions In addition to supporting several local missionaries and engaging in community outreach, JCF provides regular ministry opportunities with a number of our local partners, including: • New York City Relief – A ministry serving the homeless in New York City and New Jersey through a mobile relief bus and other initiatives to connect the most vulnerable with various services, such as shelter, medical care, addiction recovery, and job training; this also includes JCF hosting an annual block party to serve the residents of Paterson, NJ, a community challenged by crime, poverty, and substance abuse.

• Restore NYC – An organization with a mission to end sex trafficking in the New York metropolitan area and restore the well-being and independence of foreign national survivors.

• Good Neighbor Ministry – A nonprofit in northern New Jersey that provides companionship for the elderly in nursing homes, senior centers, and hospitals through musical concerts, conversation, and fellowship.

• Jesus for Muslims – A ministry based in New Jersey working with Muslims and Muslim-background believers, including ESL programs where volunteers can teach English.

• Family Touch – A Christian counseling ministry based in northern New Jersey that strives to strengthen families and communities through trainings in leadership development, educational support, and life skills enrichment.

• KCCC – A ministry of Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, that seeks to share the gospel with students and disciple, train, and mobilize them to continue to share the gospel.

• Harlem Soup Kitchen – A local outreach to the homeless in Harlem, NY.

JCF also sends an average of 6-8 short-term missions (STM) teams—including youth missions, family missions, medical missions, and women’s ministry trips—overseas each year to support our global partners.

The MET is committed to the faithful stewardship of the resources with which God has entrusted us. Areas of financial oversight include missions budget appropriation, missionary support, strategic partnership project funding, grant requests, disaster relief funds, and support of local outreach.

The MMT handles all logistical aspects of missions mobilization and STM trips, both locally and internationally, for our members to engage in the Great Commission. This includes but is not limited to planning the missions calendar, organizing local outreach events, hosting missionaries, leading STM teams, and coordinating the annual missions conference.

Englewood, NJ The City of Englewood, NJ is conveniently located just 20 minutes northwest of New York City. It is within easy access to all major airports, highways, and public transportation. It is located in Bergen County, the most populous county in New Jersey and one of the wealthiest in the U.S., which has a growing demographic and cultural diversity and includes attractions such as MetLife Stadium (home of the New York Giants and New York Jets), the Palisades Interstate Park, and the Hudson Waterfront. Bergen County also has one of the last remaining blue laws in the U.S., which means that one of the most popular commercial shopping cores of the New York metropolitan area is almost completely closed on Sundays. Most Englewood campus members live in Bergen County and neighboring Hudson County.

The suburban community of Englewood itself offers many contrasts between its mansions

and more affordable apartments to its quiet residential neighborhoods and its vibrant downtown that includes the Bergen Performing Arts Center, restaurants, specialty boutiques, and retail stores. Englewood’s population is also more diverse than many of the surrounding neighborhoods with more than 28,000 residents within the city’s almost-5 square miles, including 31.2% Non-Hispanic White, 32.6% Black or African American, 27.5% Hispanic or Latino, and 8.1% Asian. However, Englewood still faces many challenges as over 10% of the population are below the poverty level and receive a wide range of emergency and case management services, including food, housing, utility, and counseling assistance.

New York City, NY New York City is the most populous and densely populated city in the U.S. with an estimated population of over 8.5 million people over a land area of 305 square miles, including 33.3% Non-Hispanic White, 25.5% Black or African American, 28.6% Hispanic or Latino, and 12.7% Asian. The city, often described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, has a significant impact upon virtually every sphere of life, including finance, media, art, fashion, education, entertainment, and international relations. New York City is also one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world, and with its five boroughs, 35

there are hundreds of distinct neighborhoods each with a definable history and character. However, with over 20.6% of the population in poverty, there are many areas of critical need and opportunities to serve the most vulnerable groups of New York City.

Manhattan in particular is the geographically smallest but most densely populated borough, and it is home to many popular landmarks and attractions, including Times Square, Central Park, and the Fashion and Broadway Theater Districts. Additionally, the United Nations, headquarters of many multinational corporations, and world-renowned schools such as Columbia University and New York University are located in Manhattan. The city also continues to serve as a major port of entry for immigrants to the U.S. Most JCF members of the Manhattan campus commute from Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.

The New York Metropolitan Area Although the New York metropolitan area is one of the most cosmopolitan and exciting places to live in the world, it can be overwhelmingly difficult for individuals to be still before God and find authentic community in the midst of a busy suburban or city life. Spiritually, it is considered to be one of the least evangelical metropolitan areas in the country, and New York City in particular is one of America’s top ten most churchless cities as defined by “unchurched” adults who have not attended a church service, except for a holiday or special occasion, at any time within the past six months.

Although JCF’s Englewood and Manhattan campuses have developed their own lay leadership and unique communities that seek to do life together, the church’s overall vision unites both congregations as we seek to be a vibrant church that pursues intimacy with God and grow in our desire to serve the New York metropolitan area and beyond so that the world can be transformed spiritually, socially, and culturally by the power of the gospel.

Joy Christian Fellowship (JCF) is a nondenominational, multisite church with campuses in northern New Jersey and New York City. We are seeking an individual with a pastoral call for the Senior Pastor position who exhibits the following: Intimacy with God and consistency of character.

The Senior Pastor leads an authentic spiritual life of prayer and worship and pursues a deep intimacy with God. His/ her personal history is marked by a servant leader’s heart and steadfast love for his/her family, the church staff, and the congregation. He/she exhibits faithfulness and perseverance during challenging times. The Senior Pastor fulfills the biblical qualifications of elders/overseers defined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.

Collaborative leadership and humility in relationships.

The Senior Pastor’s leadership style is marked by humility, wisdom, and prayerfulness which permeate all matters. He/she has a Father’s heart and loves people over programs, focusing on shepherding rather than simply exacting productivity and

Passion for discipleship. In addition to providing effective pastoral care and ministry for the congregation, the Senior Pastor cultivates the spiritual gifts within the body. He/she challenges and inspires the congregation to be transformed by the power of the gospel so that the church can ultimately become a community of disciple makers who bear much fruit and transform the world for Christ. He/she especially has a heart to cherish and build up the next generation (children and youth) and embrace the younger congregants (adults in their 20s and 30s).

Solid biblical preaching marked by life example. The Senior Pastor possesses a deeply-rooted, sound biblical theology and inspires others to go deeper in their faith journey. He/she is able to effectively teach the Word of God with great doctrinal clarity and practical relevance to the congregation. He/she faithfully and fearlessly preaches the gospel without compromising biblical authority even when it is contrary to popular opinion and cultural realities. The Senior Pastor also leads the congregation by modeling a deep conviction to fervent prayer and repentance.

He/she clearly communicates by life example and teachings grounded in biblical truth with a special sensitivity to the move of the Holy Spirit.

Vision-casting and enthusiasm for the church’s unifying mission. The Senior Pastor clearly develops and articulates God’s vision for the church by seeking the Lord through His Word and prayer. He/she is able to grasp the church’s gospel-centered mission and cast a compelling and unifying vision for its implementation. He/she is able to lead the church staff and the congregation in fulfilling this vision in a synergistic way that maximizes all the available resources and talents of the church body.

_____________________________________________ DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility of the Senior Pastor is the teaching and preaching of God’s Word to further the spiritual growth and maturity of the congregation. The Senior Pastor will provide leadership and oversight for all ministry activities within the context of the worship services and beyond to help develop a rich worship life in the church. He/she will set and drive ministry objectives and goals and equip the church staff and congregation to effectively perform ministry work.

The Senior Pastor must be able to nurture a large staff by promoting cooperation and a team-oriented spirit and celebrating the successes of those who are in his care. He/she must play an essential role in building a new generation of leaders by recruiting, training, discipling, and supervising all church staff. He/she must also have experience handling a

growing church of similar size and leading in a relational and empowering manner.

The Senior Pastor will serve on the Council of Elders, and he/ she will represent the pastoral staff to the Council of Elders.

The Senior Pastor embraces the church’s philosophy of team ministry, which includes an atmosphere where each team member is interdependent and accountable to one another, and ultimately to the Senior Pastor and the Council of Elders.

This position serves the congregants across all services and campuses of JCF while contributing to all areas of church operations as a member of the Council of Elders and leader of the church staff.

• BA/BS from an accredited college of university • MDiv or higher degree from an accredited seminary • Demonstrated pastoral experience in a church of similar or larger size • Experience managing and leading a multi-pastoral staff is desirable • Strong organizational, management, and communication skills
