… people creating a more peaceful world “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Editor’s Corner

Barbara Muller is a peace activist, educator, and Peace Podcast host.

Bench of Dreams, Muller Peace Park, Costa Rica

ditor’s Corner: As most of you know, I spent seventeen incredible years traveling and working for peace with my husband Robert Muller. One of the delights of those years was watching dreams being manifested on the Bench of Dreams on the sacred Mount Rasur above the University for Peace in Costa Rica. I would like to invite all of you to create your own Bench of Dreams where you can dream your own future. The dream process that emerged from this magical place is to hold two stones or pebbles while visualizing your dream. One stone is then placed on the Earth so that it will honor and remember your dream. The other stone is kept with you as a reminder of the dream. With this issue of Peace Community magazine, we are honoring artists and authors who are each creating beautiful dreams of peace for our world. We hope you will take time to listen … or re-listen … to the podcasts of these amazing peace people.

– Gratefully,

Barbara Muller

Peace Podcast #25: Brian Berman Artist for Peace How can you bring peace into your life with Art, Thoughts and Conversation? Listen to Brian talk about his in peace building, and how it came from his years of meditation and peace practices. He teaches love and compassion for oneself as an essential ingredient, for without peace on the inside there can be no peace on the outside. His sculptures represent the importance of stillness, serenity, and a peaceful presence as part of creating a sacred space. His role as a peacemaker was born as a child when he wandered through an exhibit about the Holocaust. Later, while facilitating a Jewish German Reconciliation Project in Germany, he realized Hitler had made him, inadvertently, a peace-maker. More at BermanSculpture.com

Peace Podcast #17: Joyce Wycoff Gratitude through art and words Is peace a dance between gratitude and generosity? While searching for the meaning of life, Joyce began exploring gratitude and generosity, seemingly separate yet, somehow, two-sides of the same coin. In 2016, she published Gratitude Miracles, the journal that could change everything and began a serious gratitude practice as she wandered through Mexico for two years, enjoying the beauty, color, music, food, and most of all, the people. After a strong yearning for home brought her back to California, she began a deeper dive into gratitude, recognizing it as a pathway to almost every good thing … self-understanding, relationships, happiness, resilience, health and energy, connection to self and the world around us, relationships, abundance … and peace. She is now working with her long-term collaborator, Lynne Snead to create a radically different approach to practicing gratitude and understanding self. More at GratitudeMojo.com

In what Dr. Siegel calls his favorite book, the one he still reads, here is the BernieSiegelMD.com beginning of Prescription #3: The greatest truth I know about life is that love is the answer. If you ask me what the question is, I will tell you it is every question you could ever ask. Love is always the answer to every question and problem. When Robert Muller was 25, tragedy changed the course of his life. "It was towards the end of World War II," he tells me. "I was part of the French resistance. My company got a message that there was a barracks nearby and which 20 armed German shoulders were hiding. I was the only one who spoke German, so I was assigned to negotiate. They were young men, boys really, frightened and desperate. Through a megaphone I persuaded them to come out. I promised them that we wouldn’t harm them, that they would be safe and sent home in a few days time. They came out and surrendered.” Muller frowns deeply, and continues in a low voice. "The next day I was informed that they were all dead -- shot by the French resistance.” He crosses his arms, covering the necklaces he got from Pope John Paul II and the Hopi Indians. Then he throws his arms up in the air, “Can you imagine how I felt? They had been betrayed! To this day I still see their faces in front of me.” Upon hearing the news that they had been killed, Muller ran up the hill and fell to the ground sobbing, repeating to himself, “My Ode Magazine, January/February 2006 12

God, what have I done? Later when he descended the hill, he was a man with a mission. But how do you work effectively for peace, that was what the young Robert Muller asked himself as he worked toward his degree in economics at the University of Strasbourg near his family home in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. His answer arrived while he was on the train after the end of the war he had forgotten to bring anything to read but remembered that the French Association for the United Nations was offering a prize of 5,000 francs to the best student essay on developing a world government. So he jotted down his thoughts and a few weeks later he was informed he had won the essay contest and was invited to be an intern at the newly created United Nations in New York. That was 1948. The internship would mark the beginning of a distinguished 40-year career at the UN, during which Muller coordinated a number of UN agencies, ultimately rising to Assistant SecretaryGeneral, a position he occupied under three consecutive Secretary-Generals.

Peacebuilding Now How we create a community culture of peace is evolving. Peace building is more effective at the community level where needs are known and solutions come from collaboration and cooperation between all sectors of society: the arts, education, environment, business, safety and security, recreation, faith-based, service, wellness, and government. *** Goals in becoming a City of Peace: We support the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1947. What does it mean to our community to have Peace Officers, rather than policemen? We believe it leads to healthier, more cohesive communities. What does it mean when we resort to diplomacy and peace-building to solve our problems? We believe it creates a city with greater respect for one another, a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, that benefits all of our citizens. When peace is the desired outcome of negotiations and community discussion on issues that arise, We believe the community will obtain far better results that will be reflected in increased wellbeing and welfare of its citizens.
