ARTISTIC DIRECTOR STATEMENT

Thank you for joining us for Evidence’s 2026 season at The Joyce Theater. We are very excited to present two distinctly different programs.

Program A celebrates Omotayo “Wunmi” Olaiya, a longtime collaborator and dear friend. We have worked together since 1992. She is the Costume Designer for all the works on this program and her music and voice are employed in three of the works. For the 4th piece she performs music by Fela Kuti.

Program B celebrates the life and legacy of the beloved Toni Pierce-Sands. The works on the program were already planned, before she joined the ancestors in November 2025. This program will feature Torch (a celebration of life in spite of challenges), Clear as Tear Water (a solo that I created for Toni), Where the Light Shines Through (a work Arcell and I choreographed for TU Dance in 2017) the final work in the evening will be Grace.

This celebration is long overdue and I am happy the time is now.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Praised by The New York Times as "one of the most profound choreographers of his modern dance generation," Ronald K. Brown blends African dance with contemporary choreography, music, and spoken word, to tell stories that illuminate fundamental aspects of the human experience. Founded in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY, uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in AfricanAmerican culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of African dance forms and rhythms. In the four decades since the company’s founding, Brown has created over 30 works for EVIDENCE, and has garnered commissions from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jacob’s Pillow, The Kennedy Center, The Joyce Theater, Ballet Hispanico, Malpaso Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire, and Harlem Stage, to name a few. Today, the company tours extensively in the US, reaching annual audiences of more than 25,000. Through a profoundly unique repertory of dance works and community-based, intergenerational education programs, Brown’s work is designed to empower, educate and connect. An advocate for the growth of the African American dance community, Brown is instrumental in encouraging young dancers to choreograph and to develop careers in dance.

After mastering sabar, Alioune went on to master djembe drumming as well. As a young boy, he was a premier performer in Le Ballet Sing Sing Rhythm both dancing and drumming. Later on, he started touring on the international stage (drumming, singing, and/ or dancing) with many world-renowned mbalax bands such as Youssou N'Dour, Fallou Diene, Baaba Maal, Ismael Lo, N'Diaye Rose and Mbaye Dieye Faye as well as Peter Gabriel, Jon Faddis, Dion Parson, Steve Turre, Winard Harper, Chris Botti, Leni Stern, Mike Stern, Salif Keita, Harry Belafonte, and Wyclef Jean.

ADEKUNLE ADENIYI ADEGEYE (Drummer) is a New York City–based master African drummer, percussionist, and cultural performer with over three decades of experience dedicated to preserving and sharing African rhythm and Afrobeat expression. Born in Nigeria and raised within a rich musical lineage, Kunle was immersed in traditional Yoruba rhythms and ceremonial drumming from childhood. As the son of King Sunny Ade, Kunle inherited a profound cultural legacy, which he honors while forging his own artistic path. His music blends traditional African rhythms with contemporary production techniques and modern sonic textures, creating a unique sound. Kunle has performed with artists such as Wunmi, Vector, Don Jazzy, Dbanj, Wande Coal, and Ms. Lauryn Hill, among others. He's a dedicated cultural ambassador and educator, working with organizations like Crown Troupe of Africa and EVIDENCE, A Dance Company to share African musical heritage. Kunle is also a fashion collaborator, working with designers like Wowwowby, Wunmi, Moshood and Aderrific Threads.

He's the founder of Kunle Mighty Sunrise Band and Aderrific Threads, showcasing African heritage through music and fashion. His work bridges generations, cultures, and continents, keeping Afrobeat and cultural performance alive on global stages.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

VISION STATEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

To achieve this, we will:

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;

• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;

• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;

• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
