As a student who has lived in five different countries and been in schools that provide International Baccalaureate (IB) program since grade 1, I believe that my transition to Sevenoaks School will be very successful and I will adapt to the environment quickly. Since being in my present school, Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS), the school have awarded me Honour Roll every year since grade 7. This award is awarded recognition that I have attained a final report card grade of 5 in every subject with one exception. Additionally, I have previously received two awards related to Mandarin, from both my previous and present school, the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) and Canadian International School of Hong Kong. That award was given for my demonstration of excellence in the subject and being the most improved. Being in a family with both parents being Asian and speaking English for my whole life, these awards allow me to know that I am still connected to my Asian heritage. I believe this is one of the traits that will be a great fit for Sevenoaks School, as it shows that I am openminded, and willing to accept who I am and my culture. Since moving to Hong Kong in grade 7, I have been taking cooking/baking lessons and have been using my skills to provide for the greater community. After Cooking for a Cause (CFC) club was founded by Marco Clark, a graduate from CDNIS in the 2014-2015 school year, I have been an active member contributing to the club. This club works with Christian Action Hong Kong to provide meals for refugees twice a month. Before the club was created, I was part of a small group of students who helped Christian Action to raise money in order to pay their rent, as the organization was close to closing down in 2013. Since 2015, I was the youngest executive member of CFC and became president of the club in 2016. As the club grows further in the CDNIS community, we plan on providing more meals for the less fortunate, such as the homeless in Hong Kong. Additionally, I created a cookbook, dedicated to diabetics for my personal project that provides recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts that are not only suitable for all types of diabetics but also beneficial to their body. This cookbook was later on passed onto multiple CDNIS staffs and parents who shown interest in a healthier lifestyle or knew someone who is diabetic. Moreover, I am also involved in multiple sports and arts, both in and outside of school. I was in the school annual musical production since grade 7, starting from being a shadow puppeteer to the assistant stage manager. I am also in the under 20 basketball team and previously in the under 16 volleyball team. Additionally, I compete in sports climbing, bouldering specifically, outside of school regularly; ranking 3rd in my age group in Hong Kong. All of the services and extracurricular activities stated above shows leadership, and Sevenoaks’ principle of pioneering community service. Therefore, I think I am a possible fit for Sevenoaks, by being a balanced student in the academics, arts, and sports. Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to the interview and I will follow up in one week to ensure there are no technical problems or misunderstandings (I can be contacted at: joycechang2019@gmail.com).
Sincerely, Joyce Chang
