HELPING OUT We are committed to playing our part in conserving the remote places and amazing wildlife of Africa and to helping its people to thrive. We work in partnership with highly respected NGOs including TUSK and Send a Cow and each year we give at least 5% of our net profit to these and other causes. We also strongly prefer to use safari camps and lodges which have effective conservation programmes and which operate in collaboration with surrounding communities.
FINANCIAL SECURITY You have complete financial security when you book with Africa Exclusive. We are fully bonded and licensed under the Civil Aviation Authority’s ATOL scheme (license number ATOL 2883). This covers all clients who book their international flights from the UK and holiday arrangements through us. Clients who book their own international flights and those who are resident outside the UK are also fully covered under an insurance policy that we voluntarily maintain with Travel and General Insurance Services. Situated in a leafy suburb on the outskirts of Entebbe and only five minutes from the airport, The Boma Guesthouse is ideally suited for business and recreational travellers alike. Run by an Irish management couple, guests are guaranteed personable service and will enjoy hospitality standards that are unique to the area.
The hotel comprises fifteen bedrooms, tastefully decorated in an eclectic African European style. They all have four-poster beds, en-suite bathroom, satellite television and private veranda. The main house has a private dining veranda and living room, while the bar is situated a short distance away from the main house in a landscape garden with lake views and although open to the public, it retains a quiet atmosphere to guarantee a peaceful night’s rest for residents. ENVIRONMENT Environmental responsibility is a high priority at The Boma, their business plan commits to operating in a manner that maintains a balance between helping the environment and the local community. 14 SAFARI.CO.UK
Their solar water heaters reduce the electricity consumption of the hotel and, with water being a scarce commodity in Africa, a water catchment system is utilised to make things even more efficient.
Most hotels in Entebbe use plastic mineral water bottles; filling up landfill sites, and causing a lot of roadside pollution. The Boma use large reusable 20 litre Mineral Water Fountains, which dispense into glass jugs (in the rooms and in the restaurant). No plastic water bottles are used on site whatsoever.
COMMUNITY Where possible, the hotel uses locally sourced fruits, vegetables and meats, not only reducing food miles but supporting the local communities in Entebbe. For those ingredients that can’t be sourced locally, salad ingredients and a good deal of fruits and vegetables are home-grown in the hotel managers garden, a 5-minute cycle away.

The Bwindi National Park is an area of low land rainforest and Montane Forest, with dense undergrowth, vines and bamboo. It is situated on Uganda's extreme western border, very close to the geographical heart of Africa where the confluence of the Rift Valley and the Great Lakes have created an eco-system that perhaps defines the very essence of the continent.
The huge trees and exotic vegetation provide a perfect habitat for primates with colobus monkeys, chimpanzees and several hundred gorillas. Fittingly, Bwindi is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Set on the banks of the Munyanga River overlooking the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mahogany Springs is one of the very best lodges in the area, affording an enviable position and providing an idyllic retreat to those who have ventured to see some of the world’s most magnificent primates. In the main building there is a cosy lounge and library, complete with a welcoming fire place and a restaurant where you can enjoy a good selection of à la carte cuisine. Surrounding the main building is a vast terrace which runs down through exotic gardens towards the river. Breakfast can be enjoyed on the terrace, soaking in the views and the relaxing sounds of the river.

The seven en-suite Superior Suites at the lodge can comfortably sleep up to three people and the spacious bedroom area opens out onto a private terrace each with its own unique view of the lush wilderness surrounding the lodge. All suites have large en-suite bathrooms with a gorgeously designed open terracotta shower. One further honeymoon suite has a larger bed and the addition of a bathtub in the bathroom. For the ultimate in luxury the Presidential Suite offers two large en-suite bedrooms, a separate lounge and private terrace overlooking the river.

Not only is Mahogany Springs ideally situated just a five-minute drive from the Gorilla Tracking Headquarters but it is a birdwatchers’ paradise. Bwindi boasts more bird species per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world and is home to 90% of all Albertine Rift Endemic species. Many guests spot birds that are impossible to see in any other parts of the world.

On the morning of Day 3 you will be taken to the gorilla tracking base where you will be briefed by your guides before setting off into the hills to track these truly amazing animals. Tracking the gorillas through the misty forests requires patience and stamina, sometimes walking for hours in the mud and the wet. Finally meeting them in the undergrowth is an inspiring moment. Quietly chewing away at their vegetarian delicacies, they seem like a marooned human family. The tender

grooming and firm disciplining of their offspring seems all too familiar. The family cast a wary glance at the sudden human intrusion into their private world but are comforted by the clucking made by the trackers. When provoked, the noisy, but harmless silverback grunts, screeches, bares his fangs and beats his chest, before slithering off with attendant females, offspring and other mature males.

During the rest of your stay you will have the opportunity to enjoy other activities in and around the national park (at additional cost). Take a guided walk in the rainforest, home to several endemic bird species, clouds of butterflies and rare plant life. This walk offers excellent photographic opportunities and the knowledgeable guide will provide a great insight into this globally important habitat. Walk through the local village, learn about community projects, visit a medicine man and even the Bwindi Community Hospital that started as a health clinic under a tree and now provides vital medical and educational services to over 60,000 people. Discover the traditions of the Batwa pygmies, and learn about the native tribal inhabitants of the forest. The indigenous people of Bwindi forest, though no longer resident in the forest, still practice many of their traditional hunter-gatherer skills.

CONSERVATION Gorilla trekking from Mahogany Springs Lodge directly helps fund conservation of the mountain gorillas. Rangers patrolling the mountains help to protect the gorillas from harm and ensure they are 30 SAFARI.CO.UK
not under threat from poachers. This has seen the overall gorilla population grow from around 200 in the 1980s to over 1000 today.
COMMUNITY Mahogany Springs are involved in multiple projects that benefit the community including Ride4aWoman. It is a project that was setup to provide local widows with the ability to provide for their family. They are taught skills and provided with sewing machines plus other facilities to assist them in earning an income. The headquarters for this project is very local to Mahogany Springs and guests are able to visit if they wish. Mahogany Springs contracts Ride4aWoman to do lots of work for the property (curtains, mosquito nets, clothing, cushions, lampshades and much more).
ENVIRONMENT Mahogany Springs believe in the importance of giving back to the country of Uganda and the environment. They run a successful tree planting scheme to offer guests the chance to offset at least some of the carbon from their trip. There is a small talk by the General Manager explaining how much carbon people use to travel and then guests are invited to plant their tree. This all takes place within the grounds of Mahogany Springs.

Adjoining the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, the Masai Mara is one of the world’s most famous and spectacular game viewing regions.
Covering an area of over 1800 square kilometres, vast expanses of undulating grassy plains roll from horizon to horizon dotted with acacia trees and isolated rocky outcrops. AFRICA EXCLUSIVE 33
These rich grasslands and watering places sustain thousands of elephant, graceful-looking giraffe and big herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. A host of smaller creatures such as baboon, warthog, hyena and jackal call the Mara home, while there are also myriad antelope species, from fleet-footed topi to majestic-looking kudu and diminutive dik dik. It is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where visitors may see iconic African wildlife in the same super abundance as existed a century ago.

The Mara is home to the largest population of lions in Kenya and these magnificent beasts spend most the day sleeping in the shade of acacia trees as vast herds of zebra, gazelle and wildebeest roam the plains. The smaller plains game are often targets for cheetah and they can be seen chasing down prey across these expansive grasslands.

The waters of the Mara River are renowned for huge numbers of crocodiles and pods of hippo, whilst the acacia woodlands and riverine forests are favoured by opportunistic leopard who use their stealth and cunning to ambush antelope and other smaller creatures.

The birdlife in the Mara region is equally as abundant and even more varied. Eagles soar high overhead, vultures dance around carcasses, and hundreds of other species of beautiful birds both great and small provide a continual source of interest.

From July to October the annual migration of over two million wildebeest, zebra and antelope passes through the Masai Mara creating one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles with seemingly endless lines of wildebeest strung out as far as the eye can see across the plains and plunging into the rivers braving crocodile jaws in one of the most exciting events in the natural world.

Situated right on the northern edge of the Masai Mara Reserve in the private Mara North Conservancy, Elephant Pepper Camp is tucked away in a prime wildlife area surrounded by the Mara’s ubiquitous game. This is a step back in time but with modern comforts: an original bush camp, eco-friendly, and committed to finding a way of life that does not harm the wilderness. The homely atmosphere is part of its charm. Guests can relax with nature, no generators, no vehicles passing, no permanent structures jarring the skyline, just the sights and sounds of the bush which completely surround you.

The camp has ten large and spacious light canvas tents, all set apart underneath a grove of trees. The tents have double or twin beds, elegant campaign furniture, en-suite bathroom, shower with hot running water and flush toilet. From the veranda you can watch wildlife roam across the plains. Two of the larger tents are able to comfortably accommodate entire families under one roof, or alternatively, if a special occasion, can be taken by couples who would like some extra space.

The main dining tent offers social dining with a help-yourself bar. The staff are friendly and welcoming and arriving in camp is like coming home. The appetising food is prepared by chefs trained by the owners’ family, using traditional north Italian recipes mixed with international and local favourites. Barbeques by the campfire, dinner in the mess tent or bush breakfasts on the open plain are some of the lasting memories to take home.

The camps ethos is to provide an adventurous, authentic and diverse Masai Mara safari experience. There is wide variety of activities available that wouldn’t be possible if staying within the reserve itself. Game drives are the very best way to get up close and personal with all of the wildlife in the region and allow you to cover the widest area though there is superb walking in the surrounding hills, across the open plains and in the forested valleys. Local Maasai guides will enhance your walk, focussing on the smaller flora and fauna so often missed on game drives.

One day you may choose to head out on a full day game drive into the Masai Mara Reserve itself, possibly heading towards the rivers and key crossing points if the migration is passing through the region. You may then stop for a picnic lunch under an Acacia tree before making your way back to camp. Another day you may choose to explore the private wilderness area surrounding the camp and so avoiding the crowds and minibuses commonly found in the reserve proper. Elephant Pepper truly embodies a “best of both worlds” camp and allows you to enjoy every aspect of this magical land to the fullest.

There is also a strong cultural focus at the camp with staff and guides keen to impart the bush craft and knowledge passed down to them through many generations. The camp has strong ties and gives great support to local communities and they will always be keen for you to visit a local manyatta to gain an understanding of the way of life of these semi-nomadic people in a very authentic way – free from gimmicks and pressure to purchase items. The owners are very careful to visit villages only rarely in order that guests can experience a truer reflection of everyday Maasai life.

CONSERVATION The camp was fundamental in founding the 283 Km2 Mara North Conservancy, one of the largest community and private sector managed conservancies in the world. It is now regarded as one of Kenya’s most successful conservation models, creating long-term commitments to the environment, wildlife, local communities, and promoting low volume / low impact tourism. The land is leased from the local Maasai solely for the preservation of wildlife, with lease and conservancy fees providing tangible benefits to communities in exchange for the protection and careful management of wildlife areas.

COMMUNITY The Land and Life Foundation provides merit-based scholarships to students from local communities, awarded annually to the two highest scoring KCPE boy and girl at Ololomei Primary School and provides 75% of school fees throughout high school. The foundation also built a fully functional kitchen for Ololomei Primary School that can accommodate up to 460 kids alongside the installation of water tanks.
ENVIRONMENT Elephant Pepper Camp is 100% solar powered, boasting a Gold Eco-rating with EcoTourism Kenya. Consequently, the camp does not require a noisy generator to produce its power, so creating a peaceful and natural environment for both guests and local wildlife. The Lewa Conservancy recently dropped its borders with neighbouring Borana to form a 93,000-acre conservancy, home to a diverse array of wildlife and set in some of Kenya's most spectacular scenery.
The snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya dominate the views to the south, while to the north are breathtaking vistas of Samburu.

The private conservancy is home to over 400 species of birdlife and 60 species of mammal including good numbers of lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, and a large population of the increasingly rare white and black rhino, while it is sometimes visited by packs of the elusive wild dog.

Lewa Safari Camp accommodates guests in 11 large permanent walk-in tents with proper beds and en-suite facilities, as well as two family tents which have one double and one twin bedroom, each with en-suite bathrooms. These are pitched on raised platforms against stone walls of lava rock. Delicious meals are served in the spacious dining area, the lodge pool is the perfect place to cool off in the heat of the day and for those guests who wish to enjoy a little extra pampering, beauty treatments can be enjoyed.

You can enjoy safaris in a variety of interesting and exciting ways including by open vehicle and on horseback (additional $89 per person) when you can enjoy the unique experience of coming close to animals which are undisturbed by your presence, regarding you as part of the horse, as you trot amongst giraffe and zebra. You can also go walking learning the fundamentals of bushcraft as your guide identifies tracks and you learn how the flora and fauna interact to maintain the fragile balance which sustains life here. In addition to these more obvious attractions, you will be fascinated to learn how the conservation and wildlife protection has been pioneered on the reserve and throughout other parts of Kenya. They have a thriving rhino re-introduction project with numbers thus far swelling to around 120 black and white rhino, along with the world’s largest population of the endangered Grevy’s zebra.

The conservancy works closely with the nearby Living With Lions project set up to monitor and track the lion prides in the area and they also have an animal orphanage that co-operates with Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi, treating animals before they are released back into the wild. The owners of the reserve have built excellent relationships with Samburu and other local tribe’s people, encouraging communities to turn from poaching to wildlife conservation and visits to local villages can be arranged easily from camp.

CONSERVATION As the only lodge owned directly by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy all profits generated by conservancy fees are reinvested directly into the conservation of the wildlife. Your stay will help contribute to the protection and growth of species including Grevy’s zebra and black and white rhino, the numbers of which have increased steadily due to the tireless efforts of the anti-poaching units on the conservancy.

ENVIRONMENT Lewa Safari Camp uses sophisticated solar panel technology for all lighting and water heating, while the camp is also cleverly designed and positioned to blend in with its natural surroundings. Plastic waste is significantly reduced by providing all guests with aluminium water bottles that you can keep as a souvenir of your visit.
