This resource is split into two parts. The first half will help you understand the basic truths that will guide you through your Christian journey. The second half teaches you how to apply those truths to your everyday life.

How to Use Student Journey

The Purpose of Student Journey The student guide meets one-on-one with the student learner to learn from God’s Word. After finishing Student Journey, the learner becomes a guide for another student, and then that student becomes a guide for another, and so on.

Student Journey has two sections that follow the pattern of several New Testament books. The first section teaches truths that we must have established in our lives, and the second section shows how to apply those truths in everyday life.

How to Use Student Journey in This Section

1. The first lesson on God and salvation is read together. In the rest of Section 1, the student guide reads the content under the section called truthpoints! and gives the correct answers for the blanks.

2. The student learner usually reads the Bible verses.

3. In the myperspective! section, the student learner is asked to share a couple of things they currently think about the topic. When learning God’s principles, we need to discover if there’s a difference between what we think and what God thinks.

4. Both the guide and the learner answer the question in thelunchline!. So many students ask these questions (sometimes in line for lunch), and you can be ready to give an answer. Then both should participate in the special writing in interact!.

5. Typically, you’ll do one topic per meeting, but if you do more, that’s okay. Just make sure you are moving these truths into your thoughts and actions. We are not simply filling in blanks; we need to know God’s Word and let it change us.

6. If you would like, you may read the Bible verses before meeting together to be familiar with the Scriptures. But Student Journey should be studied together. The student guide should not assign a subject in advance. Please do not fill in the answers in advance or on your own. Also, you can see additional resources at JourneyforStudents.com.

7. Keep in mind that you are learning these truths to become a guide for another student.

Thinking about Personal Evangelism and Personal Discipleship The Bible says that Jesus invested three and a half years preaching the Gospel, witnessing to individuals, and training His disciples to be leaders, and He focused on one disciple in a special way. Jesus personally discipled John, and the Bible calls him the “disciple whom Jesus loved.”

Now, not all of us are called by God to preach, lead the way, or train leaders. But each of us can be a witness and have a disciple whom we care for and help to do the same, as Jesus did. By learning the truths in Student Journey and personally helping to guide others, we are on the right path in our Christian lives as we journey with God to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

May we multiply disciples so our lives will make a difference in eternity.

God?

(Read by the student guide) The Bible discusses the foundational questions of life: who God is, who we are, what our purpose is in life, the source of problems, and the solutions to those problems. If you have never explored who the God of the Bible is, this study will answer your questions about God’s existence and why we are here. If you have a relationship with God, this study will help you come to a more complete understanding of who God is.

Who is God? (read by the student guide) everything The Bible is God’s revelation to us. In it, He explains that He made _______________.

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This is the first sentence in His Word to us. The Bible explains that God is not a force, nor is He in everything He created. He is a person. He thinks, acts, and feels. close And God created us to have a ____________ relationship with Him. People may believe there are other gods, but the Bible teaches there is only one God. After God had created all things, He said everything was “very good.” This is because God is perfectly good and completely holy. Maybe you have wondered why the Bible uses the words “Father,” “Jesus,” and “Spirit” for God. To understand why, let’s consider what the Bible says about the nature of God. The Bible says in 1 John 5:7 “…there are three…in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” So there is one true God, and He is triune (meaning He has three parts but still is one). This is why we refer to God as the Trinity. We can understand this better when we consider how He created us as three in one: we think, we have a body, and we have a spiritual existence.

Where did evil come from? (read by the student learner) Before God created the first man and woman, God created a very special angel, named Lucifer. The Bible says in Isaiah 14:12–13, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer…For thou hast said…I will exalt my throne above the stars of God….” Lucifer rebelled against God and was cast out of Heaven. Now, Lucifer is known as Satan, or the devil. Satan seeks worship and deceives man through false religions.

The Bible says in Revelation 20:10 “…the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire…and shall be tormented…for ever and ever.” This teaches that Lucifer’s place will forever be in Hell when God judges all sin.

Who was the first man and woman? (read by the guide) The Bible states in Genesis 1:27 “…God created man in his own image…male and female created he them.”

The first man and woman were created perfect—having peace, love, and joy with God and with each other. disobey They had freedom to love and obey God, but they were also free to _______________ God, knowing the result would be death and judgment. Lucifer tempted them, and they disobeyed God. Sin entered into the world and corrupted everything. So anyone born from them would be a sinner. This is why we are sinners, separated from God and headed for judgment! This is why we see so much trouble and evil in the world today.

God Promises a Saviour (read by the learner) As soon as the first man and woman sinned, God said He would send a Saviour to provide a way back to Him. Over time, God gave over three hundred prophecies to help recognize the Saviour, and He gave the Ten Commandments so we would know we are sinners (in Exodus 20:1–17).

Some of the commandments are: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make any graven image. Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery—even lust is adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness (meaning, to lie). No one can keep the Ten Commandments; we have all sinned. God gave us these commandments to show us we need a Saviour.

Who is the Saviour? (read by the guide) God loves us so much that He Himself came to save us! The Bible says that Jesus lived a sinless life and prove performed many miracles to _______________ He is God. To a man who had died, Jesus said, “…Lazarus,

come forth…and he that was dead came forth” (John 11:43–44). Speaking of Himself, Jesus said, “I am the way” (John 14:6); not one of several ways, not to teach the way, but the way.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me…shall never die” (John 11:25–26).

Jesus said, “…I give…eternal life; and they shall never perish…” (John 10:28), and He said, “…what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). Jesus told a man, “… thy sins are forgiven” (Luke 5:20). Only God can forgive sins.

And the Bible states, “…God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Why did Jesus die on the cross? (read by the learner) God loves us. That’s why He came. Once Jesus fulfilled all prophecies about the Saviour, He went to the cross because of His love for us. Suffering a horrible death in our place, Jesus gave His life willingly, paying for our sins. He did this for us. If you haven’t yet, would you give your life to Him today?

The Resurrection? (read by the guide) The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4, “…Christ died for our sins…he was buried and…he rose again the third day….” Then Jesus instructed His disciples to go into all the world and tell the Good News of alive salvation. His disciples left everything for Him because they saw him _______________.

And the Bible was written that we “…might have life through his name” (John 20:31).

Coming judgment? (read by the learner) Jesus said that He would return again to judge the world. The Bible says in John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” And those who refuse God’s gift of salvation will be cast into the lake of fire.

Can we earn salvation? (read by the guide) The Bible states in Ephesians 2:8–9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works….” No church, religion, good works, or religious works can save us. Only Jesus gave His life for us, taking our place, and only He can save us.

The Bible says in Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

We must ask Jesus Christ to forgive our sins and trust Him alone to save us. Then God promises us real life __________ now and perfect peace, love, and joy with Him forever.

Do you believe? (read by the guide) If you haven’t yet or you’re not sure, would you make this decision now and give your life to Jesus Christ?

If so, pray to Him sincerely: “Dear Lord Jesus, I believe You died on the cross for all my sins because of Your love for me. I believe You arose from the grave. I ask You to forgive me of all my sins. I now choose to trust only You with my life. I accept the promise of eternal life with You. Thank You for forgiving all my sins forever. Help me now as I belong to You. Thank You for answering my prayer of faith in You.” If you just sincerely prayed that prayer—congratulations and God bless you! This is just the beginning of a wonderful new life—a real life—of significance, purpose, and happiness.

The Bible also has been translated into more languages than any other book in the world. Even though the Bible is made up of sixty-six smaller books, it has one consistent message. myperspective! You will notice that the Bible is divided into two sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Bible is often called the Word of God, the Holy Bible, or the Scriptures. It is not like any other book! God has preserved it and watches over every word.

2 Peter 1:20–21 These verses teach that the Bible was not made by people or by the “will of man.” God is the author—God used over forty men, over 1,500 years, from all different backgrounds to write down each word He wanted written. The way in which God gave us the Bible is called “inspiration.”

Most of the human writers God used to write His Word never knew each other, and yet the Bible completely agrees from beginning to end. Plus the Bible has never been wrong about its predictions of thousands of future events. Only God could do this.

God’s enemy, Satan, works against God and the Bible. He has tried to ban, burn, and remove the Bible throughout history.

Countless Christian men and women have given their lives for the Word of God. And still today, false teachers try to pervert the Word of God and, sadly, some have tried to produce new bibles for profit. away Matthew 24:35 His words shall not pass _____________.

God watches over each word. preserve Psalm 12:6–7 In verse 7, God promised to _______________ His words forever. It is God’s Word and because of this, it is the authority over our lives. Because God is the author of the Bible, we must take His Word as the only authority for all we believe and do. We must always check every belief, teaching, or idea with the Word of God. He then sent His Spirit to live in all who receive Him as Saviour. truthpoints! Biblical Christianity is not just a set of beliefs, but a personal relationship to be enjoyed with God. As we communicate with God and we grow closer to Him, we will come to know Him personally. In prayer, you communicate with God, and He communicates with you. The time we spend with the Lord in prayer is exciting and powerful.

Why pray? hard for God. He is all powerful. He can answer prayer.

Luke 11:1–5 To understand the context of the “Lord’s Prayer,” we must see that the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus did not intend for this prayer to be prayed over and over. Jesus was teaching them how to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is a pattern for prayer and teaches us many principles.

As God’s children, we must accept responsibility and acknowledge that we still sin. Our sins hinder our prayers and closeness to God. Through the prayer of salvation our sins are forgiven. But now, we ask God for cleansing, and we turn from those sins. This is not for salvation but rather to break the power of sin we have allowed in our lives, and to restore a close relationship with our Heavenly Father.

To help us mature in our Christian lives, we need to do these things right away: be in the Word of God every day; communicate with God throughout each day; surround ourselves with people who encourage us to stay close to God; and stay away from places or people that make it easy to sin.

Holy?

truthpoints! There are many aspects to this subject, but this lesson will focus on sexuality

because all around us we see a bold public promotion of sexuality with increasingly depraved practices. Sex has become an addiction in our culture.

The media regularly promotes all of these areas and uses sexuality to advertise. And with the rise of homosexuality, which is predicted in Scripture, we need God’s guidance and power more than ever.

Mark 10:6–9 Marriage and children are part of God’s plan, but God planned for us to only know our spouses _______________ intimately. In God’s Word, sexual themes are discussed candidly.

In fact, God created sexuality for good and important purposes. But God has limited it to marriage between a man and a woman and has placed consequences upon disobedience of this standard. Let’s look at the important instructions from God’s Word on this subject.

What is God’s will for us?

1 Thessalonians 4:3–7 Becoming a Christian does not mean we turn into “mindless robots” or that we only want to live right just so we can avoid the negative consequences of sin. We become Christians from the heart first! It’s an inside every day change that shows on the outside _______________________, not just on Sunday.

1 Corinthians 6:13–20 deception Getting involved in sex outside of marriage requires different forms of _______________ (being dishonest, false kindness, using specially chosen words, giving gifts, etc.) all to satisfy a lust or desire we have.

Church?

truthpoints! In the Old Testament, God primarily worked through the Jewish people to get His Word to an unreached world. In the New Testament and in our time, God works through local churches to get His Word to everyone. myperspective! Before we begin, share two things you believe about churches.

Let’s see how local churches began: Acts 1:8 Before Jesus ascended into Heaven, promising He would return, He told His disciples to be witnesses _______________ everywhere in the world.

Acts 2:41, 4:4, 5:14 After hearing powerful Bible messages in Jerusalem, thousands believed. Notice that daily the disciples obeyed His command to care for and teach the new believers _______________. multiplied Acts 5:42, 6:1, 7 The disciples _______________ because they followed Christ’s example and command.

Acts 8:1, 4 Persecution scattered the disciples from Jerusalem. The disciples who were scattered Word proclaimed the _______________ everywhere they went. churches Acts 9:31 Three years after the resurrection of Christ, _______________ were started in Judea, Galilee, and Samaria and multiplied. This means that people became believers, and they began to be discipled under the leadership of their pastor and the mature disciples, forming a church in their location: a local church.

Acts 11:19–26 Eight years after the resurrection of Christ, a local church started in Antioch. This church is pattern our _______________ to follow. A great number believed upon Christ in Antioch, and the disciples were Christians called _______________ first in Antioch.

Acts 13:2, 14:23, 16:5 Three years later, in AD 44, the church at Antioch sent missionaries who went and started churches. And those churches started other churches and so on. Notice in the table of contents in your Bible that seven letters in the New Testament are addressed to seven local churches (Romans– Thessalonians), and these letters contain the main body of truth for New Testament Christians. Also, the books 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus are to pastors of local churches. And the book of Revelation addresses seven local churches. These simple observations show that God has a focus on Bible-preaching churches.

Future?

truthpoints! The Word of God has many prophesies and has never missed any predictions. There are also many prophecies yet to be fulfilled. In fact, we are at a unique time in history called the “end times” in the Bible. myperspective! Before we begin, share two things you believe about the future or what the Bible says.

The spiritual battle between good and evil is reaching an end. If we look around our world, we see turmoil everywhere. We see the rise of false teachers, false religions, the assault against our culture and chaotic events in nature. All this has been prophesied in the Scriptures, and the Bible clearly shows us what’s next and how to succeed. A key event began “the final countdown” for our world back in 1948, when the Jewish people returned to their homeland. This was prophesied thousands of years ago, and it started God’s final sequence of events.

John 14:2–3, 1 Corinthians 15:51–52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:15–18. Any moment now, Christ will take all Rapture believers up to Heaven. This is called the “_______________.”

This word means “to be caught up.” Then we will forever be with the Lord. After the Rapture, the Bible teaches that seven years of Great Tribulation will begin on the earth. Tribulation means “time of trouble.” This will be a terrible time: death, disease, hunger, famine, and earthquakes on a scale never seen before; entire seas contaminated, darkness, scorching of the earth by the sun, and many more judgments. The Bible teaches that two thirds of the world’s population will die during the Tribulation. Then the next event will be the rise of a world leader the Bible calls “The Antichrist.” The Antichrist will require everyone to receive a mark on his body. He will do many miracles 144,000

by Satan’s power and proclaim himself to be God. Also, God will choose for Himself _______________ Jewish missionaries and send them out into the world with the Word of God. 2 Thessalonians 1:7–9, 2:8–12.

At the end of the Tribulation, the Antichrist and his forces will make their final move to try to destroy the Jewish people. But at the last moment, Jesus and His heavenly army will descend from Heaven and destroy Armageddon the enemies of God. The Tribulation ends at this battle which takes place at _____________________ in the Middle East. Then the devil will be bound for one thousand years. And Jesus Christ will reign as King over the whole earth during that time. We call this “the Millennium” (meaning one thousand). Introduction to Ephesians The city of Ephesus was focused on the Temple of Diana. The idol of Diana that they worshipped was a big, black, ugly thing that looked like something between a cow and a wolf.

However, the Temple of Diana was the seventh wonder of the world, and it was an art museum with few equals.

The Temple of Diana was also a big business that sold idols for people to own for themselves. They would buy small idols and wear them around their necks, around their wrists, and around their ankles.

The temple also had the greatest bank in the world, and so it was a place where there was a lot of money.

The religion of Diana was a perverse religion. There were thousands of priestesses, temple prostitutes, singers, and dancers. This pagan worship was full of drunken chaos, lewd music, and shameless sexual activity, including harming their bodies.

Heraclitus said the temple was “the darkness of vileness, the morals were lower than animals.” For entertainment, they would take people and feed them to lions, wolves, or ferocious dogs that had been starved.

So as we study the following verses remember that the church in Ephesus was an island for the Christians surrounded by the cesspool of a vile, drunken, sinful city.
