Colorado River Rivalry: Wharton vs. El Campo

A lot’s on the line for the Tigers By KEITH MAGEE kmagee@journal-spectator.com

It’s finally here. The 104th meeting of the famed Colorado River Rivalry, Wharton vs. El Campo, is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium. This year’s game is huge, especially for the Tigers. There’s a lot more at stake than just bragging rights between the two Wharton County teams. Here’s what will happen if the Tigers win: • The Tigers will break a school record for best start, previously 7-0 by the 1974 Tigers. • The Tigers will clinch one of four playoff

spots from District 25-3A. • The Tigers will end an 11-game losing streak to the Ricebirds. Oh, and just to throw one more thing into the mix: It’s Homecoming for the Tigers. For the second year in a row, the two teams enter the mid-October game with only one loss between them. Last year, El Campo was undefeated and Wharton had one loss. This year, the Ricebirds have a loss, and the Tigers are undefeated at 7-0. Wharton is in sole possession of the district lead at 3-0. El Campo is 1-1. See TIGERS, Page A3

A Wharton tavern has been shut down for selling alcohol without a license. Mingles Sports Bar, 207 E. Boling Hwy., was closed Sunday following a joint investigation of the Wharton Police Department, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the Wharton County District Attorney’s Office. A sign is currently taped over the tavern’s front door notifying the public that the business “has been seized” by the police. “It’s criminal activity, and we’re not going to allow that in the community,” Detective Don Falks said on Monday. Falks said that the store’s assets have been confiscated. He noted that bar owners were renting the space and that an See BAR, Page A2

Wharton man sought for dealing drugs By BENJAMIN SHARP bsharp@journal-spectator.com

Police are looking for a Wharton man they say was peddling one of the most dangerous drugs available. Daniel Rodriguez, 28, was last seen in a Chevy Avalanche that sped away from police during an attempted traffic stop Daniel Rodriguez on Oct. 6. At some point in that pursuit, police believe Rodriguez, who was the passenger, jumped out. They also believe that Rodriguez tossed out an insulated cooler that contained an assortment of drugs. Police later found that Houston Texans cooler and said it contained around 30 grams of crystal meth. “That’s one of the largest

amounts of crystal meth I have seen,” said Sgt. Grady Smith of the Wharton Police Department. “It’s a very dangerous drug.” Also found in the container was a quarter of a pound of marijuana, 30 grams of hydrocodone and a small amount of Xanax, according to police. “Those are all controlled substances,” Smith said. Police tried to stop the Avalanche for a traffic violation at 11:38 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, on Alabama Road. The vehicle sped up, going around a couple of turns. When it was finally pulled over, only the female driver was found inside. “I briefly lost sight of it and in that time we believe that Rodriguez jumped out of the truck,” Smith said. Smith said that he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Scouring the area, officers eventually located the cooler See WHARTON, Page A3 Details Page A2.
