Celebrations following Ole Miss football games will never be the same thanks to The Jefferson. That's also true for weddings, business events, social mixers or general get togethers.

Rustic elegance defines the look

of The Jefferson, owned and operated by Tom Green III. His sister, Margie Schloesser, is also very much involved in the new event building that offers over 18,000 square feet to clients. Located at 365 Highway 6 East, The Jefferson is new to the area, but constructed from reclaimed materials that have been serv-

ing a purpose for decades.

“We have been collecting reclaimed materials for years and we wanted to be able to use them in a fun way and on a huge scale,” Schloesser said.

“Tom has an event center just outside of Memphis, north of Byhalia, called Mallard's Croft.

fers a lot of personality and it lends to a building that doesn't have to be decorated much.”

Green said he got the idea for The Jefferson after attending an event with his daughter, who is a member of Chi Omega sorority.

Green remembers not having enough room to move around or dance, and so he set out to build a place that could provide everything for anybody.

“I wanted to have something where they could have a party in one room and then go around the corner and carry on a conversation and visit with other friends,” Green said. “We have things that are big and something that everyone can afford because not everyone is planning something huge. The thing we tried to do is you don't have to do much decorating. It kind of stands on its own because we tried to use stuff that had a lot of character to it. Things that I have seen at other places and tried to enhance it.”

The rooms are large and full of character. There is a 45-foot permanent bar located in the Grand Hall, and another one that can move to different rooms, like the Lakeside or Faulkner.The Jefferson, which hosted the Chamber of

Commerce Red Carpet gala, recently gained resort status, allowing them to also serve beer, along with wine and other spirits. The Jefferson sits on 90 acres which offers plenty of parking, good for up to 400 cars. There is also a covered area for buses to turn around and drop off.

A lake welcomes those attending the events, and there are some that choose to use it as a backdrop to a party that flows outside and down the sidewalk.

The Grand Hall has a stage that a

band can play, and little details like a ledge above the bench that allows for drinks to be rested on while dancing. Green even made sure to accommodate the sound for the neighbors because he doesn't want an event to disturb.

Schlosser said that bands bring their own sound systems, but there are lights and speakers already installed in the facility that are used for toasts at rehearsal dinners or receptions. This past spring, caterers and party planners were interviewed and the details

provided by those experts were incorporated into construction of The Jefferson. There is even a small storage room located in the back that florists can place flowers well before the event. That room is temperature regulated so that the flowers don't wilt.

“We tried to make the place as appealing as possible,” Schloesser said. “We talked to the brides and they told us the wanted a tall chair and a tall counter to put on their makeup. A lot of bridal consultants told us we need a room with a mir-

ror, so Tom gave them a room filled N with mirrors.”

Security for events is specified, but those booking have the ability to select their own caterers and entertainment. This weekend, there are free tours of the facility available, starting on Friday at 1 and running until 5 and then again on Saturday from 8 in the morning until 11. No appointment is necessary. Weathersbee enjoys serving the community as a staff attorney

Attorney Samantha Weathersbee is a passionate staff attorney working with the Eighteenth Chancery Court District. The Athens, Georgia native also serves as the president of the Lafayette County Bar Association. The former teacher loves her job working with Judge Robert Whitwell and said this is a place where she feels that she can make a difference. Weathersbee sat down with Oxford Citizen Reporter Chaning Green Wednesday morning to discuss her job and the roundabout-way she ended up there.

CHANING GREEN: What does the role of a staff attorney entail?

SAMANTHA WEATHERSBEE: It depends on the individual judge.

I guess that you could say I function as a sort of mini judge. I sit and hear the cases being brought before the judge, I do any research that might be needed for the case, I get cases pulled up and prepped for him before hears them. There are several things.

GREEN: How long have you been here serving in this position?

WEATHERSBEE: Well, I graduated from the law school here in 2010, was admitted to the bar in October of that year and then came over to be a staff attorney here in January in of 2011.

GREEN: Do you like your job?

WEATHERSBEE: Oh, I love it. I absolutely love it. I’m able to do what I love, which is practice law, but I’m also able to be a mother to my two children, who are 10 and 12, and a wife to my husband. When the day is over, I don’t have something looming over me. I can stop and come

GREEN: Did you always want to be a staff attorney, or did you just kind of fall into it?

WEATHERSBEE: During law school, I was keeping my options open. I was enrolled at a good time to be a student, because there weren’t that many jobs available right then. Shortly after I graduated, this job became available. I never thought that

this is what I was going to do, but I love it. It became available at the right time, and I love it.

The former staff attorney was leaving town and someone who practices law locally told me that I should apply. I submitted my resume and then had sit down interviews with the judge, and he chose. The judge that originally hired me was Judge Ed Roberts.

Supervisors approve budget for fiscal year 2017

A budget for the next fiscal year to operate all the government agencies in Lafayette County was officially adopted by the board of supervisors Monday night. A public hearing came and went before the board approved the final step.

County administrator Lisa Carwyle took care of the presentation to the supervisors, who have met for months with department heads to determine which items were needed heading into 2017.

This year's budget will be $26,671,609, a figure that is similar to all of the recent budgets approved by the board. Local taxes make up almost 59 percent of the revenue used to run the county, with only 8.8 percent coming from the state and federal funds.

The largest portion of the budget is allocated to operate the two local school districts. North-

west Mississippi Community College also gets a small percentage each year. The amount going for education for 2017 will $9,342,053.

Forty two percent of the budget is allocated for public safety, which includes the sheriff's department, the detention center, emergency response, constable, national guard and highway patrol.

The millage rate was raised slightly this year in the anticipation of new building projects on the horizon, board president Jeff Busby said.

“We're anticipating somewhere between $15 and $20 million worth of infrastructure and projects coming up in the next three to four years and instead of increasing it two mills next year with reappraisal, we went up one this year,” Busby said. “We're going to see what the reappraisal brings next year. We may not have to up another mill, but we're going to have $15 to $20 million of infra-

structure when you talk about the two new roads, moving the highway patrol, justice court and extension services offices and stuff there on Highway 7. Getting water and sewer and electricity there. A lot of those projects, we're anticipating, and we didn't want to hit the taxpayers all at once.”

The average millage rate in the state was 36.03 in 2015, and Lafayette County has the lowest millage rate in the state based on population. It was even better than other similar places like Madison County, which has a millage rate just above 35. The millage rate for 2017 is also still lower than it was a decade ago, or even in 2015 when it was just over 34.

“Anything goes up in any business and we've actually gone down in most cases,” Busby said.

“Most of this goes towards your schools and I'm proud of that. We have two of the best school dis-

tricts anywhere in the state. If you can invest in your children, that's what I think you need to do.”

Every four years, the state requires a re-appraisal of property taxes and 2017 is the year for that to take place. Busby said that the office of Sylvia Baker, the tax collector and assessor, will handle the reappraisal, which have been going on for the past year. Any shortfalls that may occur on some of the new projects, not the county budget, will be studied in the attempt to make sure the millage is processed correctly. That could also mean no new increase for home owners. All of it will depend on the new value of property. By this time next year, the bonds that would be used to pay for these projects will be known and the millage will be adjusted to pay for those bonds specifically.

BRIEFING Weather policy for Oxford shuttles In the event that the National Weather Service in Memphis issues a severe weather warning before or after any Ole Miss football game, the Oxford game day shuttles will suspend service on pickups and drop offs until the warning is lifted by the National Weather Service. This is for the protection and safety of our staff, the riders, and shuttle drivers.

In the event that The University of Mississippi institutes a weather delay during the football game, shuttle service will be suspended until the weather delay is lifted by the university. Riders are advised to seek shelter in a campus building, or remain in the stadium under cover. This policy is being instituted for the protection of the

shuttle patrons to prevent them from being exposed to hazardous weather conditions while waiting to leave campus back to the shuttle sites. The same policy will apply pre-game to the Double Decker buses running from the square to campus.

Bramlett Elementary receives grant The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Oxford's Bramlett Elementary School a $1,817 grant to support youth literacy. The local grant is part of $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to approximately 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.

“Osmo helps foster learning for a student in the areas of social and emotional skills, art, creative thinking, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics),” said BES Principal Suzanne Ryals.

Patrons of Music to hold fundraising concert

The University of Mississippi’s Patrons of Music scholarship organization is hosting their annual fundraising concert next week in order to provide financial support to incoming freshmen music majors.

University faculty founded the Scholarship foundation in 2004. The faculty members were interested in establishing an endowment to support exceptional students pursuing music academically. Only freshmen music majors are eligible to receive the scholarship and must audition for it. All funds for the scholarship come from community support, donations and an annual fundraiser the organization puts on.

In years past, faculty members from the music school have performed the concerts. Each fundraiser would feature different professors of instructors performing a wide variety of musical styles, both vocal

and instrumental. This year, the organization is trying something a little different.

Moonstone and Friends is the name of the band performing at this year’s fundraiser. The seven-member group includes four graduates of the University of Mississippi’s Department of Music. Curtis Downs is the front man for the band and is sponsoring the show by paying for his band to perform. Since Downs is covering the cost of the actual performance, 100 percent of ticket sales and additional donations can go to benefit the scholarship fund. This is the first time the organization has had a benefactor to sponsor a full performance by an outside entity. Those working on the fundraiser hope this is the first of many annual events that function in this way.

The band will be performing a show entitled “The Great American Songbook,” which will feature about 20 songs broken up with a 15minute intermission. Over-

all, the concert will last about an hour and a half. Tickets for the concert cost $25 a person and include a reception following the concert that will be held in the Choral Room where attendees can meet the band as well as faculty members and learn more about the scholarship foundation.

Associate Professor of Music Ian Hominick is in charge of the auditions that determines which promising music students receive financial support from the organization. Each scholarship given through the Patrons of Music Scholarship Fund totals out to $1,000, which is given at the beginning of the year and divided over each semester of the student’s freshman year.

Money raised from total donations each year allows for the organization to give out between eight to 10 scholarships every academic year, but the number of scholarships the organization can give out each year is solely determined by how

much money they raise.

“It’s all dependent on how much money comes in from the fundraisers each year,” Hominick said when asked how many scholarship the foundation gives away annually. “There’s a mail campaign as well as the fundraising concert. What comes in from that goes toward the endowment from which we draw the scholar-

ship funds.”

This year’s concert is the first fundraiser for the Patrons of Music in two years.

Due to the construction and renovations that took place at the music building last year, the organization did not hold a fundraiser. Additional donations to the Patrons of Music can be made to the group at anytime through the music depart-

ment, on their website or in person.

Currance holds new unique signing for ‘Big Bad Breakfast’

John Currence knows breakfast. The author and James Beard Award winning chef’s latest book “Big Bad Breakfast” is a collection of recipes and stories built around Currence’s unique take on Southern breakfast cuisine that helped to make his restaurant of the same name so successful.

Across the street from Square Books Jr. Tuesday morning, Currence, along with staff from Square Books, set up tents and held a book signing in the form of a drive-thru breakfast.

Currence came up with the idea for the unusual book signing to shake things up and stay true to the theme of his book.

“These things get kind of tedious, at times, and we wanted to something a little more fun an whimsical and maybe a little bit irreverent,” Currence said. “I just wanted to do something different. It goes along with the theme of what we do. I just thought it would be fun do something that would make it easy for people to come by. It’s a breakfast cookbook. Why not do it early in the morning?”

People wishing to purchase a book would drive or walk up to the first tent set up across from the bookstore. This tent was operated by Square Books staff who took care of the bookbuying transactions. While patrons waited in line for Currence to sign their copy, they were brought a free biscuit and cup of coffee, right to their driver’s side

“Everything, she likes everything about John Currence,” Ayers said, speaking of her mother-in-law. “Big Bad Breakfast, City Grocery, Snack Bar, all of it. She loves all of his restaurants.”

Square Books holds dozens of book signings a year, but this is the first one to incorporate a drive-thru breakfast. Lynn Roberts is the general manager of Square Books. She said that in years past, they have held book release parties and signings in unusual ways before. Depending on the individual release, some book signings have been held outside, at the Powerhouse, or even at midnight, though there has never really been one quite like this.

“It’s more of a companion book to the restaurant,” the chef said. “A lot of the recipes here are not things that we necessarily do there everyday, so it really sort of suggests that there’s more to think about when it comes to breakfast than just your conventional eggs, bacon and grits. Shaw leaves his role with county for role with MEMA OXFORD CITIZEN

Lafayette County officials are now searching for a new individual to coordinate and lead the Emergency Management/Homeland Security department. David Shaw announced his resignation from the position to the county supervisors last week in an executive session board meeting. His request was officially approved during Monday's special session meeting that focused on the budget.

Shaw has been in charge of the department the past seven years.

He is leaving the county to become the deputy administrator with Mississippi Emergency Management Agency or MEMA. When the position with MEMA came open, the executive director, Lee Smithson, called to gauge his interest.

“It took some convincing because I wasn't planning on going anywhere,” Shaw said. “When I retired from the highway patrol and got this job, I was planning on retiring here one of these days.

something different in a totally different place.”

As the details of the position were spread out to Shaw during a two-hour meeting with Smithson in Jackson, the move become more possible than not.

“I had the Labor Day weekend to think about it and talk with family and figure out my options and then the Tuesday after, I came back to work and I started talking to (supervisor president) Jeff Busby and let him know what the offer was,” Shaw said. “Then I talked with some other folks in the county that I work with. That helped me kind of decide what I wanted to do. About that time is when I made up my mind and said let's go for it.”

Shaw told the board of supervisors that he was totally satisfied with his position, and that he appreciated how they worked with him during his tenure.

“I enjoy my job and it was difficult to turn away from that, but it's like the cliché saying, they made me an offer I couldn't refuse,” Shaw said, who will start his new position on Oct. 1. The supervisors appointed Jerry Johnson, the former fire chief for the

for the support he got from the board. Shaw will try to finish some of the projects he has already started before leaving for his new position. The knowledge he does have of the job will be passed to Johnson, who is also familiar with a lot of the way things work.

“I told Lee Smithson about these projects I had already started and that I would probably need to spend a little extra time here in Oxford getting them to the point where somebody else could take them over and he said that was fine and understood completely,” Shaw said. “He didn't want to penalize the county anymore than just taking me away. I'll be some work here even after I take that job. One of the main things that convinced me to do this job, (Smithson) called it sweetening the deal, and that was I only had to be in Jackson one day per week. Even though it's an executive level position, I don't have to move to Jackson, which would have probably been a deal breaker because I certainly don't want to move my family.”

Shaw's primary job will be to travel around the state and work

with the individual emergency management directors in all the counties.

“The purpose of my visits would be to find out what MEMA could do to better help them do their job better,” Shaw said. “The local county emergency management directors are the ones that deliver the services to the citizens of their counties. MEMA is primarily is to support those local emergency management directors in doing their jobs. Lee wanted a direct liaison between him and the county directors to make sure their concerns were heard in a timely manner and accurately.”

Busby tried to talk Shaw out of leaving, and wished that he didn't have to accept the resignation letter. Busby felt like Shaw's new position, however, would be a benefit locally, if a disaster were to happen.

“We all hope a disaster never happens in this county, but if it does it gives us comfort knowing that you would the first one here to help,” Busby said at the meeting.

Flying Tuk provides fun taxi alternative

For the past several months, a few unusual vehicles have been cruising around Oxford carrying passengers all over downtown and beyond. These vehicles are called tuk-tuks and are mechanized threewheeled taxies that are designed to carry passengers in style and comfort.

Auto rickshaws, which have been commonly used in Southeast Asia, Central America and parts of Africa for a few decades, are now making their way to the United States and growing in popularity. A company by the name of Flying Tuk started in Oxford this summer and works to provide people out on the town with the unique experience of getting around in the open-air electric taxis.

Flying Tuk officially began operations the first day of June. The alternative taxi business is the brainchild of Danny Klimetz and Ferriday McClatchy. The pair met professionally through McClatchy’s wedding and event planning business Ferriday Events. Klimetz works as a wedding photographer and the two have teamed up on the same events together in the past. In January, the two pair was in Cuba at an event planning workshop. Klimentz had worked a wedding in England that had electric rickshaws and the two used them when visiting Cuba. Soon, the duo began discussing the possibility of bringing the taxis to the Square.

Photo courtesy of Flying Tuk “We started talking about bringing them to Oxford,” McClatchy said. “When we got back from the trip, we started researching the vehicles and we found a distributor in the U.S. and kinda went from there.”

Within two weeks after launching in June, Flying Tuk needed to add an additional three vehicles to their service, bringing their total fleet number up to five vehicles. The three new taxis arrived just a couple weeks ago.

Alison Doyle has been working with Flying Tuk for about two months now.

She serves as both a driver and the company’s main

dispatcher. People can book a Flying Tuk by texting a phone number and, rather than having the drivers looking at their phones while on the road, Doyle receives all of the pickup requests and contacts the drivers via a walkie-talkie app. The drivers can then respond to the requested pick up when available.

“I just thought they looked like a lot of fun to drive,” Doyle said when asked why she first got involved with the service. “As a stay-at-home mom, it was also an opportunity for me to make money in the evenings when my husband gets home from work.

I thought it would be fun to get out and get that interaction with the community.”

Doyle said that she loves working with Flying Tuk because of the relationships the job is allowing her to build throughout the community. The stay-athome mother of four said that it is great to be able to get out of the house, drive an open-air vehicle and meet new people.

“It’s been a blast,” she said.

“Some nights are more profitable than others, but it’s always fun to just get out there, especially when you’re in an open-air vehicle like that. You feel like you’re out there on the sidewalk just

saying hello to everybody.

It’s a great way to get out and interact with people.”

Flying Tuk operates Monday through Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 or 2 in the morning, depending on the night. The vehicles can be booked for weddings, birthday parties and other events. There is no additional cost to reserving a vehicle, just the price of the fair. Each ride with Flying Tuk costs $5 per person and each vehicle seats up to six people with room for pets and any bags or coolers riders are carrying with them. The price might be a little more if passengers require a longer distance

than the vehicle’s usual range, but will never exceed $10 a person.

McClatchy emphasized that the whole point of establishing the business in Oxford was to bring a different taxi experience to area at a reasonable price.

“It’s not just about a ride from point A to point B; it’s about the experience,” she said. “They’re just fun. Part of it’s the open-air concept, but it’s also just new and different to the U.S. We have the vehicles set up to where customers can play their own music, we have lights and we just want to make it fun for people on their way home or out for the evening.”

Flying Tuks are restricted to traveling on city roads marked for speeds 35 miles per hour or under. The vehicles themselves travel about 25 mph. Because the Flying Tuks tend to operate primarily on the Square and the surrounding neighborhoods, this limitation does not pose an operational challenge. Even if the vehicles need to travel outside of their usual operating area, McClatchy said that they can almost always find a way to maneuver around the city using scenic back roads.

Alabama-Ole Miss game a special one for OPD officer

A Kleenex tissue package wrapped in a red bow still sits on top of a filing cabinet in the office of Jeffrey Dukes. The Warrant Officer for the Oxford Police Department was given that last year after the Ole Miss Rebels defeated Alabama.

The past two football seasons have been great for the Alabama Crimson Tide as a whole. But when the Tide has met the Rebels in both 2014 and 2015, Dukes, a former standout safety for Alabama, has dealt with his fair share of ribbing. He is hoping all of that comes to an end Saturday when the Crimson Tide met back up with Ole Miss at VaughtHemingway Stadium.

“It's been tough the last couple of years. It makes me want to take off for a couple of weeks every time we've lost to Ole Miss,” said Dukes, who played his high school ball at Lafayette. “I asked Chief (Joey East) for a couple of weeks off and he said 'Dukes, you can't do that. We need you up there.' So it's been tough when we lose. I've had about 50 messages and about 100 missed calls of people just picking on me.

I've just turned my phone off.”

To add insult to injury, Dukes had to work the Saturday the goal posts came down following the 2014 win. He saw the students carrying pieces of the posts on the Square.

“I was like 'Are you serious? I have to go through this? I just went through the

loss, now I got to go through them taking the goal post and putting it on the Square,” Dukes said.

“Then Hugh Freeze, he came up the wrong way up Jackson Avenue. I think he was just going up there to see everybody and speak. I asked Chief if I could write him a ticket going down the wrong way.”

Of course, Dukes makes sure to let everyone know he went to Alabama. His jersey hanging in glass behind his desk is another can't-miss item.

“It was tough growing up Ole Miss and then going to Alabama and coming back home. I'm a fan of both of them, but when Alabama comes to town or plays them, I'm stuck in between,” Dukes said. “It's tough.”

Dukes played for Mike Shula at Alabama. He just missed Nick Saban by a season, but Dukes was a member of a team that defeated Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl following the 2005 season. In 2006, Dukes ended up leading the Crimson Tide in tackles with 74.

“We were rebuilding because they just got off probation and getting a lot of our scholarships back,” Dukes said about his time

at Alabama. “We had good players but we didn't have the caliber of players that we wanted. Everybody meshed together well. The guys that won the first national championship, like Justin (Woodall), we recruited those guys to come up there. His last year in high school he was throwing 97 and we didn't think we were going to get him, but there was something he loved about the Alabama atmosphere.”

There are many fond memories of playing for the Crimson Tide, and Dukes said he keeps in touch with one of his former teammates, safety Roman Harper, to this day. Dukes also remembers Mike Shula's father, the legendary Don Shula, talking to the team before the 31-3 win over No. 5 Florida.

“We had a good defense that year. We had like six, seven guys drafted off that No. 1 defense,” Dukes said.

“Roman is my baby's God dad, so we keep up. I try to keep in touch with a lot of those guys.”

The Oxford Police Department is expecting another huge weekend with Alabama fans in town.

Dukes said that the plan was to be full force in order to keep things in order in

From an on-the-field standpoint, Dukes said Ole Miss is the only game he is really worried about.

“They're going to always bring their A game against Alabama. Losing (DK) Metcalf is big for them, but when you have five big receivers, it's hard to stop that offense,” Dukes said.

“We're basically a defensive team. We rely on our defense. That's Saban's defense. It always comes back on me. I'll come back in here, and my whole office will be Ole Miss. They don't give me a break up here at all.”

The picking doesn't stop for Dukes at the OPD if the Crimson Tide lose. He also

gets when he goes to municipal court where he serves as the bailiff for Judge Larry Little, who is also a huge Ole Miss fan.

Dukes has had to buy a cake the past two years when the Crimson Tide has lost. The final straw came last year when the elephant on the icing had his eyes crossed out like he was dead.

“I can't lose to them anymore. Then again, when we lose to Ole Miss, we win the national championship,” Dukes said. “So I'm like, go ahead, beat us, we'll go win the national championships because Saban is going to step it up after you win. I hope we win, but I'm in between.”

If an individual doesn't show up to city court, Dukes and his team serves a warrant on that person.

“I have some new guys that love warrants. I've been in this for four years and I can do it, but when you have some guys that are some go getters, it makes it easier,” Dukes said.

He is also the evidence officer for the department.

And he is a member of the SWAT team that is joined up with the sheriff's department. Dukes is studying to become a Sergeant with the department as well.

There are times that Dukes stops in to see people at Alabama when he travels to play professional softball. Yes, Dukes is a member of a team based out of Jackson, and sponsored by Mikan and Buffalo Wild Wings, that travels all over the South playing softball. Fellow police officer Kevin Parker was the one that got Dukes involved in softball.

“I still talk with coach TJ, one of the strength and conditioning coaches. It's hard to Coach Saban up there because even when it's not the season, he's a busy man,” Dukes said about his stops to campus.

“Even though the dreads are gone, they still remember who I am. I've gone to one or two charity events, but it's hard to get away, especially when I work so much and I play softball on the weekends. If I can find a field, I'm out there.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

LOU-Home works toward more affordable housing

The Nonprofit organization LOU-Home has been active in the Oxford community for the past 10 years, fighting for more affordable housing in the area.

It was founded by a group of citizens concerned with the direction of the local housing market.

As it currently stands, Oxford has the highest income to housing price ratio in the state, meaning that the cost of buying a home here far exceeds the average income of people working in the city.

Cristen Hemmins has been working with LOUHome for the past two years. She defined the mission of nonprofit as wanting to build Oxford into a community to where everyone can afford to invest in home ownership and be proud of where they live. Hemmins said that she has seen this issue deeply affect the lives of friends and loved ones, forcing

them to relocate out of the community in order to find affordable housing.

“It’s such an important issue that our community in particular needs to address, because property is so valuable here in Oxford,” she said. “We’ve got such great schools and so many people would love to live here. So many people that work in our community, unfortunately can’t afford to live here.”

Hemmins gave the example of the Winchester plant, saying that a walk around the parking lot will show that the majority of the workers have license plates registered outside of Lafayette County. Most of the plates are from surrounding counties because the housing market is so steep in the area, the people who work here cannot afford to live here.

LOU-Home believes that a community undoubtedly benefits from diversity. Their ideology is that when growing socioeconomic gaps continue to push out the city’s poorer residents and

And the city seems to share this opinion.

The Vision 2037 Comprehensive Plan states need of an additional 200 affordable homes in the Oxford area.

Fred Laurenzo serves as the Chief Administrative officer of LOU-Home and was a founder of the organization. He said the nonprofit sprang out of an observable need in the community for affordable housing. In 2006, a group formed and in 2007 they had obtained official nonprofit status from the federal government.

“We don’t want a divided community,” Laurenzo said. “What’s happening is that we have these systemic forces, primarily economic, which are creating a divided community or a community made up of highly affluent people or student housing and it’s pushing those who live and work here out of the community.”

Community Green off of Molly Barr is so far the first

and only housing development organized by LOUHome, but it was an undeniably successful one.

Of the houses that compose the Community Green subdivision, 21 are former faculty houses that once sat on the University of Mississippi campus and three were newly constructed for the project.

The faculty housing was going to be demolished in order to make room for new residence halls for students. Rather than wasting the structures, LOU-Home took those houses and relocated them to where they now sit off of Molly Barr.

The houses were renovated and the choice to do so saved the project untold thousands in construction costs.

Every single person that bought a home in Community Green was a first-time house buyer. These people were university staff, janitors and several other essential members of the local workforce who would have otherwise likely not been able to find a home here.

LOU-Home works not only to create affordable housing, but also to educate community members and give them the best chance possible to purchase a home of their own.

The organization pays for the training of credit counselors who, upon completing certification, volunteer to help community members with their credit. They answer questions and coach them on how to get their financials in order.

Laurenzo said that the discussion of affordable

housing is an important conversation that has been going on for quite some time now. He and his organization are working to make sure that people realize how big of a problem it really is.

“There’s a need for affordable housing in Oxford,” Laurenzo said, speaking frankly. “The numbers as I presented them at the city board meeting last week clearly show that there just isn’t affordable housing for a lot of working people in the community. The problem becomes that we depend on all sorts of city and university and business workers to keep this city going, and these people can not afford to live in this community.”

Currently, LOU-Home is working to secure a small stretch of public land off of Molly Barr near the Oxford Creek subdivision for another affordable housing development. The public land would have to be donated by the city and there are several hoops to jump through with that regarding zoning and various protocols the city government is required to follow. Laurenzo has been meeting with aldermen for the past few weeks to discuss the issue, which he and his organization have been working up plans and proposals for over the past year. Emergency Operations Center very helpful at OM games OXFORD CITIZEN

Wofford wasn't just the season opener for the Ole Miss football team last Saturday. For Barbara Russo, the Emergency Management Coordinator at the University of Mississippi, the matchup with the Terriers served as a valuable test run leading into the Alabama game, and the next three weeks of home football games overall. Russo said things went smoothly the first home game.

The biggest issue that had to be tackled, in terms of coordination, was the weather that came into the area late in the first half.

“My direct coordination was with the national weather service office. I checked in with them at noon for example and I asked for them to call me when the storm front hit the county line,” Russo said. “That went off like clock work.

We watched the lightning develop and the call was to obviously delay halftime 15 minutes in order for the storm to pass. We had the three cooling tents going and that aspect played out real well.”

Representatives from various agencies that would come into play in case of a major incident at the stadium are all located in the central spot. Some of those outside agencies include the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Department of Transportation, the FBI as well as local police officers. Representatives from Ole Miss Athletics are also in the center to help out.

“If I need resources, they need to be sitting in the same room as I am.

That's the purpose of having everyone in one room as things develop,” Russo said. “It's total communication and it's under FEMA's guidelines as an incident command system and that's how it operates and flows.”

Tim Potts, the chief of the University Police Department, said it was so much easier to deal directly with the agency on Saturdays thanks to the operations center.

“The situations are handled right there in the center. We have cam-

This was not around previous to last year and I think they realized the need for it. And when they set it up, they set it up great. There is not a seat in the stadium that we can't cover. Very good cameras with high resolution that allow us to zoom in.

We can direct officers to a row and even a seat number.”

A packed stadium isn't the only thing that Russo and Potts keep up with. Anything that goes on in the Grove is also monitored in order for it to be managed.

“You will have a ton of Alabama fans that will not be able to get into the stadium so you expect them to be around, tailgating or doing whatever it is they're going to be doing,” Russo said. “We're going to be taxed in terms of resources on campus. Georgia is going to be a huge game and then we cap it off with Homecoming and Memphis.

It's a three-game stretch that's going to be huge.”

In order to prepare for the busy weeks, meetings are held and reviews are made. Russo had a debriefing on Monday morning and the discussion involved what went well and what didn't. And what changes needed to be made. Tuesday and Wednesday were loaded with planing meetings to make the adjustments, Russo said.

“And then we just move on to the next game. Each game is different.

Weather projections are different and we have a starting point and then adjustments,” Russo said.

“The VIP traffic for the 'Bama game is anticipated and we have SEC Nation coming this week, and that changes a lot. That changes our traffic and parking and there are logistical headaches with that. Winning brings problems, it's both good and bad from an emergency management standpoint.

“It's all about the fan experience and you want to be less obtrusive as possible. Fan safety is paramount and what comes after that is secondary. I think we do a good job about being as veiled about it as possible. For the next couple of months our little burg will be bursting at the seams with traffic and buzz and a certain electricity. These are good problems for a small southern town to have. It is why so many of us who stopped here for a look-see, wound up staying and loving the place; old and new, then and now. A living place that grows and adapts and abides.

When I walk around the square I can still see Ajax, the bookstore(s), Proud Larry’s, City Hall and Mr. Faulkner. I can see Angelo’s chicken salad from the City Grocery balcony, so they haven’t killed the town yet, by my lights.

Evans offers Oxford residents a change with Canoodle

The Oxford Canteen opened in April 2014, but over the summer, Corbin Evans decided it was time for a change. Because of the success of noodle nights, Canteen is changing to Canoodle and serving a new menu of noodles, rice dishes, and Banh Mi sandwiches. Canteen was originally started as a food truck with no wheels, located in the alley between The Lyric and South Depot. It operates as a takeout window and outdoor food counter, an everyday pop-up restaurant.

Evans has worked with and learned from some of the best chefs in the country, and he specializes in fresh farm to table food for his menu items. Canoodle prides itself on being the closest authentic Vietnamese food in Oxford.

“People were surprised when we decided to change because our new menu is so different than what we were serving,” he said. “It has a lot of vegetarian options and the Canteen offered a heavy meat menu. Most of our options now are a lot healthier. We also have rice noodles for gluten intolerant people.”

For example, Evans gets fresh eggs and pork from local farmers, and also used a five pound mushroom found during a hike in the Whirlpool Trails. He called it “chicken in the woods.”

One of the most popular dishes is the sweet potato tofu with cucumber, pickled vegetables, jalapeño, cilantro and Sriracha mayo. Other items include fresh ginger lemonade, Mexican coke, Lulu’s Vietnamese style Ice coffee, dang dang rice noodles with roast pork, shrimp, greens and egg in a spicy curry broth, chilled sesame peanut noodles with cucumber, mint and scallion, soba noodles with mushrooms, greens, tofu and togarashi, rice vermicelli with spiced shrimp, and ginger chicken jook, served with delta blues dirty rice grits, chili oil, peanuts, soy sauce and scallions. The menu also includes traditional Vietnamese dishes of Pho (a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of broth, noodles and meat, and Ramen (egg noodles with pork, greens, egg and shiitakes.)

Evans also serves a very traditional Vietnamese dessert that most patrons are leery to try, the creamy coconut rice pudding with black eyed peas known as Che Dau Trang. A goal for Evans is to have a space for Canoodle to become a real restaurant and is actively looking for the perfect spot. Another goal for Evans is to have more of a set menu, that way he can keep inventory and keep items super fresh. He is also looking to do some night time pop up meals starting with home football game weekends featuring a few breakfast options like breakfast tacos, tortas et cetera.

OM's Kelly can make history with another win over ’Bama

T

wo seasons ago, when the Ole Miss Rebels hosted the Alabama Crimson Tide at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, quarterback Chad Kelly was watching the matchup at Mexican restaurant in Meridian.

“We had to tell the people to put the game on. They didn't even have the game on,” Kelly said amidst laughter Monday while talking about the next highly anticipated matchup between the two schools.

“I remember going crazy. I wasn't committed or expecting to go to Ole Miss then, but I was a fan of the Ole Miss football team and the way they played that game, and finished the game, was amazing.”

Two years ago, Kelly was at the start of his one-year playing career at East Mississippi Community College. He was trying to improve his reputation after leaving Clemson. Two years later, Kelly arrived at Monday's press conference dressed in a suit, and talking about how much he studied the Bible. He's made tremendous progress as a player, and person, since he's come to Oxford. And Saturday will be another chance for him to show his abilities to the rest of the nation.

Lafayette senior could feel win over Oxford coming

Hours before the annual Crosstown Classic, senior cheerleader Ayana Johnson knew the Lafayette Commodores were going to play well against Oxford. She could feel the energy at the pep rally, and when the game started, it was clear that the Commodores were amped up and ready to battle.

The 23-3 win over the Chargers was Johnson's favorite game to be a part of because it was the first win for the Commodores since she has been in school.

“It made me feel so good. My senior year, we finally got the ball back,” Johnson said. “It just made my life. We partied on the L. I felt they were going to win even before we got on the field, before school was even over. That pep rally was the most hype I've ever seen. The whole school was 'We're going to be Oxford, we're going to beat Oxford.' And the football boys got into it. I felt it gave them the confidence they needed.”

Johnson, and the rest of the cheerleaders, did their part to bring the trophy back to the red and gold.

When Jamarcus Quarles broke free for his touchdown in the third quarter, Johnson started to feel confident about the outcome. The first person she hugged following the win was her first cousin,

“That's like my twin. We say twin power. We take a picture after every game because we look alike,” she said. “He told me 'We got that dub.' That was the topper.”

A win makes cheering on the sidelines so much easier, Johnson said. She and the rest of her teammates had been doing their best to get the football team over the hump, and it all came together against Oxford.

The thing Johnson likes the most about a Friday night is when the ball is kicked off. And it doesn't even have to be received by the Commodores.

“I love the first kickoff return. I just feel like it's about to go down. And my first favorite is the run through when we put up the sign because I actually do the run through signs,” she said.

There is more to the cheerleaders than just being on the sidelines. The

team also has a competition squad and Johnson felt that was going well.

“We combined with middle school and I feel like there is a lot of talent.

I feel like everybody is putting their part in and everybody comes to practice,” Johnson said. “We're more into it because we went last year and we know what to expect. I feel like we are well prepared.”

The next few games are at home and Johnson said it was more fun to be in front of the home crowd.

“It's your field and you have more fans. When we're at home, we go to the other side and meet the cheerleaders and be friendly,” Johnson said. “I love to get to know New Albany. They're so friendly and outgoing.”

Up until this year's meeting with Oxford, the game that Johnson really enjoyed was the meeting with Ripley in 2015.

“That was a real good one. It was real intense,” Johnson said. “The Senatobia game made me sad

last year, but Noxubee had to be the worst.”

Tyler Williams and Xavier Martin are Johnson's big brothers on the team, which means she buys them snacks each Friday before a game.

Johnson said Williams wears Mississippi State gloves and does a good job of showing off his pride in the Bulldogs.

“I'm proud of him. He's my friend,” said Johnson, who is an Ole Miss fan.

“Tyler is obsessed with Reese's and Xavier is obsessed with Twix. Tyler asks for blue Gatorade, but Xavier is whatever is fine.”

The team is working on new stunts with one of the new flyers, Emma Caine, who is a freshman.

“It's her first year flying, but she is really strong.

She has a lot of potential,” said Johnson, who wants the fans to be even louder this coming Friday night.

“I want them to get interactive with us. They yell and I love when they stand up and yell for the guys, but do it even when they're winning. Keep it going.”

Lafayette coach Jennifer Sharp depends on Johnson each week, saying she has been a vital member of the team the past four years.

“She doesn't give up when the going gets tough. She is truly an asset,” Sharp said.

Strong offensive showing for LHS helped defense get stops

There were a lot of hugs and slaps on the back given out among the Lafayette football coaching staff following last week's win over Oxford. When one team beats another by three scores, there are usually a lot of things for even the most hard-boiled coaches to be proud of.

Jason Russell was very proud of how his LHS offensive line fared against a very good Oxford defensive line. Russell said he was proud with how his kids prepared leading up to the annual Crosstown Classic.

“That's one thing that we pride ourselves on. We work really, really hard everyday in practice and I had some kids come up to me after the game and they told me how different our practices are,” Russell said.

“They said 'Coach, you make it tough in practice, but it sure did pay off.' I'm really proud of the work ethic that our kids put in. It showed with how physical they played.”

None of the coaches, Russell said, ever lost confidence in the team after the 0-2 start.

“We felt like we were the best 0-2 team in the state of Mississippi and we felt like we played two really quality opponents. We had some things that didn't fall our way in those first two games,” Russell said. “All of our goals and our aspirations are still ahead of us. I think we have a great football team and the sky is the limit for this team.”

Jamarcus Quarles finished with 272 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers, and Russell said he is the cog that makes everything go on offense.

“You have to have a guy that can see the hole and make those cuts and explode through the hole,” Russell said. “I thought our offensive line made nice holes for him, but you still have to have a guy that hits those holes and has the speed and athletic ability to break some tackles. We saw that with him. He broke a

On the other side of the ball, Lafayette's defense held Oxford to 261 yards and out of the end zone, which is something no other LHS team has been able to do in a long, long time. Defensive coordinator Ben Ashley thought a difference for the way his unit played was how well the offense moved the ball.

“We weren't on the field very much. We had been on the field a lot the first two games and (Friday night), we drank a lot of water and when you're over there sipping water and your offensive line is controlling the game, that's a testament to how well we played offensively,” said Ashley, who was hoping the win would take his unit to another level. “Hopefully when we put the film in those guys will realize just how special

we can be if we want to be.

There are a lot of pieces there that are pretty dynamic. The first two games, we had seven, eight, nine guys running to the ball and had a couple of different guys loafing. It just kind of felt like everyone was chasing the football pretty well. As long as we have 11 people running to the football, we have a chance to be pretty good on defense.

That's the key, getting them to play hard.”

Outside of dropping some Oxford passes that could have been intercepted and not lining up a few times right when the Chargers had two tight ends in the game, Ashley couldn't find much wrong with the overall way his defense played.

“Alignment is a big deal.

We tell them each week that it's 80 percent of the game plan. If they get lined up correctly, it takes away a lot of what people can do to you,” Ashley said.

Kelly could become the first Ole Miss quarterback to beat Alabama in back-to-back games since, well, ever. Kelly said beating Alabama is about mindset, first and foremost.

“You have to go in thinking you're going to win, of course.

We've been reading the Energy Bus book by Jon Gordon and that's really keep to having that mindset that you can accomplish anything,” Kelly said. “You can go into any atmosphere and win, regardless of the situation.

As long as we have a great mindset going in, and we execute, that's what it comes down to.”

Alabama has great recruiting classes every season, and Kelly said that the Crimson Tide players believe in the system, and the coaching staff. Ole Miss has already played a similar team in Florida State, and Kelly said he can take that experience with him into this game.

“The first thing is to not turn the ball over. Protect the ball, and you will give yourself an opportunity to win,” he said.

And when you play a talented team like Alabama, it takes a little luck to win a game. Last season, Kelly had one of those type plays go his way when he threw off his back foot towards Laquon Treadwell. The ball was tipped up, but instead of it being intercepted by the Crimson Tide, it fell into the arms of Quincy Adeboyejo, who ran in for a touch-

down. Kelly said his family and friends kept asking why he threw the ball.

“I said why not throw it, right?” Kelly responded. “I was just trying to make some plays.

That's part of who I am. Sometimes it may not go the way you like, but sometimes it does. And God is on my side. That's why I read the Bible everyday.”

Hugh Freeze said that Kelly

shouldn't have thrown the ball up like he did, but he also agreed that was part of what made Kelly so great at the same time.

In his thinking he knew that Laquon was there and that he'd have a chance to fight for it — and he knew Laquon would. So that's Chad's reasoning. That has a little merit,” Freeze said.

“I'm not crazy about wildly doing that again, but you need a few breaks when you're playing great teams. We've had some of ours and we've had a few go against us. They had an onside kick that made the game a lot closer than it should've been last year. We got a couple turnovers that gave us a short field — so you need one of those ball bounces to your way every now and then. But I'd just as soon us not do that again.”

Ole Miss fans are surely hoping for a few more breaks, and bounces, to go their way this Saturday. It should be another fantastic game for sure. And the winner will be the one that makes the most plays, or the fewest mistakes, because both rosters have become much more even.

Lafayette senior Kirkland Pruitt excels in both volleyball and soccer while maintaining a grade point average of 3.3.

Team-first approach makes Pruitt valuable to LHS soccer, volleyball

Leadership, coupled with athleticism, are two of the things that make Kirkland Pruitt such an important member of the volleyball and soccer teams at Lafayette.

Pruitt plays libero for the Lady Commodores on the volleyball court, and coach Clint Jordan said she is a very hard worker.

“She is one of the best teammates I've ever coached. She values her peers, she values the relationships she has with others and she fosters those,” Jordan said. “She makes sure that they're good and solid. The libero is really the defensive quarterback.

She makes sure that we're in the right spots and she calls off everybody for a fly ball like a shortstop on the infield. If a free ball comes over, and she gets to it, it's hers.

It's important to have a person who understands when to go get it and when not to get it or when to help a teammate and when not to help. She's very good at that.”

Pruitt doesn't just excel at sports, she is also a fantastic student, with a grade point average

“I have to work for it. There are some subjects that are easier to study for and some that I have to really study for,” she said. “Science is what I need to work for the most. And that's any kind of science. It stresses me out. Then English is my best subject.”

Because volleyball runs into the start of soccer season, the hardest part for Pruitt was balancing out the practice schedules of both sports. Pruitt has played soccer since she was old enough for her parents to sign her up. She has played volleyball the past three years, and she has noticed her improvement there.

“I think I take in what the coaches tell me really well and I think that helps me learn with

sports,” she said. “I like libero because I stay on the court the majority of the time. I really like being on the court so much. I get to see my whole team play because I'm in the back so much.

It's really nice seeing them all work together.”

The toughest part being a libero, Pruitt said, was judging where the hitter is going to attack with the ball. That goes for a kill, or a serve.

“It changes so much, it's difficult at times,” Pruitt added.

Orianna Shaw called Pruitt “a joy” to play volleyball with each match because she is always smiling.

“She always wants somebody to be happy. When I come to practice, I'm always smiling because I see her,” Shaw said. “She can be tough, and she has to be with her position.”

Soccer is the sport Pruitt was hoping to have success at because her brothers all played. She also plays on defense in soccer, and she felt like the sport comes naturally to her. The success she has garnered in both school and in sports is a direct result of her parents.

“Both of them were very ath-

letic when they were in school and then both of my brothers were both athletic, especially with soccer,” Pruitt said. “It wasn't pushed on me to play sports, but I really wanted to. I feel like it challenges me to balance sports and school.”

Pruitt has a goal of playing soccer in college. Finding the team is still up in the air. Itawamba Community College has talked with Pruitt, who is also looking at a few other colleges out of state.

“I don't mind going away. My mom is like go for it. Of course dad is like you can stay here,” Pruitt said.

Soccer season will be different than the ones the past few years.

Alley Houghton is now playing at Ole Miss, and Pruitt said the team was really dependent on her to make plays.

“I think it's good in a way that she is graduated because we're learning to actually play as a team and not just strictly depend on her,” Pruitt said. “We can actually depend on each other and not just one single player. I think we struggled in some of our games because we depended on her too much. I think we know how to

win. The team we have now, we've been playing together for so long and we all mesh well together. The ones on the varsity team pretty much play club and we get extra practice. I think we'll do well.”

LHS soccer coach Melinda Scruggs said the thing she likes about Pruitt is she makes sure the team is involved first before herself.

“Now that she is a senior for me, the thing that is standing out is how she leads by example in fitness and how she trains and how she presents things to the team,” Scruggs said. “It's always about the team, never about herself. She is crucial to what we do. When she's not on the field, you're going to see a big difference. Her presence on the field is something we need to have in order for us to be successful. Friday Night Previews: Week 5 Commodores have confidence coming off win over OHS VS. LOUISVILLE.

A win over Oxford in the Crosstown Classic may just end up being the thing that gets the Lafayette Commodores rolling. Head coach Michael Fair will know if that's the case a lot more Friday night when the Commodores host Louisville, but Fair's feeling is that the win over the Chargers will serve his team well.

“We needed a win for a lot of reasons, especially here in this town. Our team needed something good to happen.

We had worked so hard and felt real good about where we were, we just needed something to happen at the right time. And it did,” Fair said. “It's got all makings of being something that will push us to another level. All

the signs are pointing towards it anyway. The kids are really confident. They understand the physicality that we're trying to approach each game with. They saw it pay off the other day.”

A physical approach paid off for the Commodores as Jamarcus Quarles ended up with 272 yards on the ground against Oxford. Fair is building for the future, and not just this season, but for years to come. His goal is for the team to always be able to run the football, during the regular season and in the playoffs.

Lafayette defeated Oxford in the Crosstown Classic last weekend to win its first game of the season. Coach Michael Fair is hoping the win pushes the Commodores to another level moving forward.

Fair said they have a physical style as well.

“They're bigger. We're going to have to deal with a couple of backs that are 215,

220. They have a quarterback that has been impressive,” Fair said. “They have a lot of guys back and they're full of juniors. They're just

athletic. They will throw the ball up on the outside and they have a couple of guys that can go get it. So it's going to be a challenge for our guys.

“Defensively, they run to the ball well,” Fair added.

“They've played some good football teams, but our guys have been fortunate to play some really good teams.

We've played fast and I think that will help us. I don't remember Louisville being 1-3 very much and we don't need them to get it together on our field. I think eventually they will because they're that kind of team and coached well. You just don't want to give them the opportunity to get everything going in their favor in your week.”

Tackling in space, and being fundamentally

sound, are the two things the Commodores will have to do against the Wildcats and their athletes. Fair said that his offense will face two different defensive fronts, one that employs four linemen and one that has five.

“They like to run a lot of man coverage which allows them to put a lot of people in the box to stop the run,” Fair said. “We're going to try and pick our spots and try to stretch the field vertically, like we did the other night a couple of times. Maybe if we can do that we can remove some of those guys and get back to running the ball a little more. Taylor Alexander got the 2016 season off to a shaky start. The Ole Miss junior didn't like how she performed at the tournament in North Dakota. Her connection with setter Aubrey Edie wasn't right, and a great connection, as well as being in the right spot all the time, is a huge key to a middle blocker like Alexander. The slow start eventually got worked out and by the second tournament, Alexander was able to use the word “awesome” to describe her play.

“The connection was there, blocking was there. I was getting in the right spot.

I was looping around and doing my approach. I've gotten better. I think I've grown a lot since my freshman year,” Alexander said.

“I've come further, playing wise, from where I was. I

know to make myself available and bring energy when needed or that one play we need to have that great moment.”

Being dependable, and earning that big kill or big block, is something Alexander is really starting to relish.

She was named to the alltournament team at Lipscomb this past weekend.

On the season, she has 89 kills and leads the team with 38 blocks overall. There are several players on the roster than can provide those big moments, but Alexander is fine with it being her role.

“I think it's all about the connection with Aubrey.

There is something about getting a kill in the middle that is just a different type of energy,” she said. “I get real pumped. Everyone wants to hit that 10-foot line and when it happens, all the energy comes up. Coach likes our passes off the line to where Aubrey has the op-

tion to where if I go up and jump, and that middle on the other team goes up and stays with me thinking I'm going to get the ball, she can still switch it and push it to the outside. Then our pins have one blocker, they're one on one, and have all that space up the court.”

Ole Miss coach Steven McRoberts said Alexander has stepped up, a lot. He said outside of the team, there were a lot of questions about the middle blockers coming into the year, and how well the team could play after losing seniors Ty Laporte and Nakeyta Clair last season.

“They were our two to go to over the last two years.

This past week, when we were playing four potential NCAA Tournament teams, she had her best week of the year,” McRoberts said. “It shows she can rise to the TURN TO ALEXANDER PAGE 27

Rebels looking to get offense going again

There are points in every soccer season where a team has trouble scoring goals. The Ole Miss Rebels are going through that currently. They failed to score in two losses this past weekend, and in the lone win in the last four matches, Gretchen Harknett has been the only player to put the ball into the net.

Coach Matt Mott said his team has to keep battling and working in order to get past the stalled attack.

“I think we're creating enough chances, we're just not finishing. We're kind of snake bit. CeCe (Kizer) is getting good looks and not finishing. Addie (Forbus) is getting good looks and not finishing and Gretchen is getting good looks and not finishing,” Mott said.

“We're creating some balls but just not able to put it in the back of the net. Plain

and simple. It's three out of four games that we haven't scored and that makes it hard.”

Mott talked about confidence in regards to the scoring drought. He added that it's been frustrating for the players, just like the coaches have been frustrated.

“We are talented enough to score a number of goals and for whatever reason, it's not happening,” Mott said. “If we weren't creating any chances, or just not getting opened up, there would be cause for concern. You go through this in seasons and you have to take the good with the bad.

You have to keep working.

That's all we can do.”

South Alabama was the latest opponent in a long line of good teams the Rebels have been playing, which has been another reason for the lack of goals.

“They have played everybody tough all year long.

They're a good team and tough to break down, and

competition. There were some bigger middles on her and she did well. I know she likes to hear when we say let's get her the ball. She's put a nice job of putting it away and also gotten some quality blocks. She had some matches early where she struggled offensively,

but she was still getting like seven blocks so she was still finding ways to score points for the team.”

McRoberts added that Alexander was a great leader for the team, and a great teammate for the other middle blockers.

“When they're out there, she is always talking to them about where to go and what the assignment is out there

and really helping both Nayo (Warnell) and Audrey (Fischer) who are both greener than even she is,” McRoberts said. “I'm really pleased with her and there is still a lot of upside and room for growth which is really exciting.”

“You could be up and you're still feeling the pressure because you are the last line and you want to keep the ball out,” Coleman said. “We're confident in our forwards. We know it's coming. We know they're going to get it and we're just going to keep playing our game because we know they will eventually get those goals. It's just that last little bit isn't there. It's like we build up up to it and the last piece of the puzzle isn't fitting in. We're all confident that it's coming and our forwards are going to do what they need to do.”

There are still plenty of SEC games for the Rebels to get back on track, starting Friday night at LSU. That's what Coleman felt coming out of the South Alabama contest, one where she saw the team improve compared to the meeting with Missouri.

“That's what really mat-

ters. We've only lost one and still plenty to go. We can only go up now,” she said. “We're going to come together and we're confident it's going to happen.”

This season is a little different for Coleman, who has played outside middle almost all of her career. She had transitioned more into a defensive player, but against South Alabama, she was able to get into her old spot on the field.

“It's just a different role.

You have to get up the field and you have to track back.

It's a lot of running but Matt is good about letting us go until we can't go anymore and then getting us a sub,” Coleman said. “We just give all we have our outside players and then we get our break in. on the scoreboard, but blow for blow with physical play,” Freeze said. “That is something that we have thought all week long, again going back four years. This is something we had to do to compete and our kids really drew a lot of confidence from that. I think it is a combination of the confidence that has been set through playing them the four years we have been here and playing them early is advantageous.”

An improved depth chart, one that mirrors Alabama, has also benefitted the Rebels in recent matchups. Ole Miss is more beat up than in other meetings coming in, but being in good shape was another point Freeze made about having success against Alabama.

Confidence is something the Rebels have on their side heading into the next huge matchup with the No. 1 Crimson Tide, who breezed past Southern Cal and Western Kentucky the first two games.

“There is no doubt that the confidence, you have to believe that you can and our kids do. We believe that we can play with anyone in the country,” Freeze said. “That doesn’t mean we can beat them on any given day, but we do believe

You know, you get a few breaks that go your way and find a way to win one and we have done that a couple of times. Confidence does come from that and our kids will be confident Saturday.

Offenses that spread the field, and use tempo, have hurt the Crimson Tide in the past, but Freeze said that coach Nick Saban has been able to get his team up to speed to deal with those type of attacks.

“They have a great rotation, they

have great depth, it is predetermined a lot of times when the rotation is occurring so it is like they are matching you really well in the tempo stuff,” Freeze said. “The thing they probably do the best is they win first down and there’s not a lot of people willing to go on tempo for the second down so it is

a combination. There is no doubt they have made the adjustments they have needed to make to keep up with it. Their offense goes tempo, so they are seeing it in practice. They are seeing everything now, the (run pass options) they are doing the tempo, so they are getting to see it all in practice.”

Alabama has been the one SEC team this season that hasn't struggled, or lost a contest. Freeze felt after the last two meetings, he had a good idea of where the Rebels stack up to the Crimson Tide. The “I have great respect for Coach Saban and the job he's done. They just continue to stockpile depth with 4- and 5-star kids. It's very difficult to say that you're ever going to overcome the gap,” Freeze said.

“I think we've closed it considerably, obviously, the proof is on the field. Do you ever overcome that?

Probably not. But you don't have to if you stay healthy and get quality players. Your depth chart may not be on the even playing field.
