The Baldwyn Bearcats spent the first couple of hours of their season-opening practice in front of a projector screen. Playing: the 2008 state championship win against Forest. No one is left from that team but Baldwyn coach Michael Gray wants this group to know what a title team looks like. For the former Baldwyn quarterback, it starts there. “We need a little more consistency at quarterback. That’s where it starts,” Gray said. Junior Corbin Scott and freshman phenom Duke Upshaw will be a duo under center but neither have varsity experience at the position. Gray said Scott will start the first game but Upshaw will get a lot of snaps as well.
DEFENSE
The Bearcats return seven and will have to fill the shoes of graduated lineman Parrish Huddleston. “We’ve got to get some stability at inside linebacker,” Gray said. “We’ve just got to keep repping.” Patterson and Antonio Price are in there. Patterson played there last year. In the secondary, Boose and Laquintez THOMAS WELLS | DAILY JOURNAL Upshaw will be at the corners. Duke Freshman Duke Upshaw gives Upshaw will move to safety. Nathan Winstead kind of going against the grain of what and Gates are both considered for kickOFFENSE we normally do. We’re going to stay in offs. Zachary Winstead will vie for the Up front, three seniors come back, the gun a lot.” extra point role.
