duties of elected officials JUSTICE COURT JUDGE

Has civil and criminal jurisdiction of all actions where the principal of the debt, amount of the demand or the value of the property sought to be recovered shall not exceed $2,500.

SHERIFF

County’s chief law enforcement officer, and chief officer of chancery and circuit courts. Maintains the county law library and is in charge of the county courthouse, jail and protection of prisoners.

SUPERVISOR

Has the power to adopt, modify, alter or repeal orders, resolutions or ordinances in his/her respective county and district not inconsistent with the law. In general, has jurisdiction over roads, ferries, bridges, tax levies, courthouses, jails, county-owned real property, appropriation of funds, contractual powers of municipality, as well as other powers expressly authorized by law.

SUPT. OF EDUCATION

Chief administrative officer of the school district. Serves as executive secretary of county board of education but has no vote in the proceedings before the board and no voice in fixing its policies. Director of all schools in the county outside the municipal separate school districts.

TAX ASSESSOR/COLLECTOR

May serve in both capacities in all counties. Assessor’s role is to maintain the personal, real and ad valorem tax rolls of the county. Collector is responsible for keeping the records of tax payments and depositing the money into the country treasury.

JUSTICE COURT JUDGE EXPERIENCED Cliff has over 26 years of professional law enforcement experience. As a Tupelo Police officer he served as a Uniform Patrolman, Shift Sergeant, Shift Captain, Juvenile Ops Commander, Detective, Community Oriented Policing/Crime Stoppers Coordinator and Internal Affairs Investigator. As a result of his years in public service he has an intimate knowledge of the Lee County Justice System.
