three houses Francois Pecard’s gloriously positioned three houses skillfully integrate architecture and landscape. The houses unfold interestingly, playing spectacular framed views against enclosed vistas, but without ever sacrificing the straightforwardness of the interior layouts, which provide everything that is required for holidaying on an island such as St. Barth’s. I love the variety of room heights, which show that Francois is a man with European background who has a very good knowledge of the local history and weather. The choice of materials is also clever and always feels appropriate – I particularly like the Brazilian hardwood, which weathers to the colour of the local rock and the cedar roof tiles which will go silver over time. I wouldn’t change a detail of the house. The generosity and sensitivity of the man is very much reflected in the work.

un mot Deuxième dans la série de trois résidences (AN1*, AN2, AN3) édifiées sur le magnifique plateau de Gouverneur du «Lotissement Andrés», cette réalisation est fortement marquée par les contraintes du site. (*AN1= Lotissement Andrés N°1) Bien que très faiblement pentu, le terrain était pratiquement inaccessible à cause de la couverture végétale très dense, mais surtout de la présence abondante de «roches à ravets» tranchantes comme des lames de couteaux, certaines de plus de 2 mètres de haut. Dans ces conditions, le parti retenu consista à implanter les constructions en préservant au maximum les éléments naturels du site. Si les bâtiments de jour furent naturellement implantés en bordure de la falaise afin de profiter au maximum de la vue et des vents dominants, les espaces de nuit, ont été dispersés dans le jardin naturel en bordure des rochers les plus remarquables afin de permette l’intimité et le repos. L’architecture, dont les toitures en essentes de wapa dépassent à peine la couverture végétale du terrain, est résolument tropicale avec ses toitures débordantes et ses vérandas entourant les principaux bâtiments. Les nombreux bassins et piscines apportent la fraîcheur et créent une atmosphère relaxante à ce lieu de vacances.
Second in the series of three houses built on the beautiful plateau of the Andrés Subdivision in Gouverneur, this project was heavily influenced by the challenges of the land. Although flat, the terrain was virtually inaccessible due to dense vegetation cover, and, more importantly, the abundance of sharp-as-knives «cockroach rocks», some over two meters high. Under these conditions, the objective was to integrate the architecture while preserving the most natural features of the site. The main living area was built on the cliff to capture the outstanding view and the prevailing winds, whereas the independent bungalows and sleeping areas were spread out in the garden, in the heart of the remarkable rocks, to allow for privacy and rest. Slanted wooden shingle roofs in wappa wood lower to the surrounding vegitation. The architecture is decidedly tropical with its overhanging verandas surrounding the main buildings. A cool and relaxing atmosphere is created by the abundance of natural water basins and swimming pools present thoughout the villa. The perfect vacation spot...

Les solides colonnes de la structure ont été en partie implantées dans la piscine et les bassins, comme si les bâtiments étaient construits sur pilotis. The solid structural columns were partially implanted embedded in the pool and natural water basins, as if the building were built on stilts.
De nuit, la grande étendue d’eau des bassins reflète les bâtiments qui semblent flotter à la manière d’une cité lacustre. At night, the pool’s surface reflects the main building, giving the illusion that the buildings are floating on a body of water.
Centre géographique et stratégique de la maison, la terrasse couverte par laquelle on arrive distribue d’un côté le salon et de l’autre la salle à manger / cuisine. À l’abri du soleil et de la pluie, il fait bon de s’y relaxer au milieu de l’eau dans la fraîcheur des vents alizés. The entry porch is the geographic and strategic center of the villa. The path from one side leads to the living area and the other to the dining room and kitchen. Sheltered from the sun and rain, sourrounded by water and the cool trade winds, it is a space created for relaxation.
Comme un ponton sur l’eau, l’allée en ipé conduit à la salle à manger et à la cuisine. A wooden walkway leads to the dining room and kitchen. Surrounded by water, it appears to be floating much like a pontoon.
La cuisine italienne en verre laquĂŠ et granit est largement ouverte sur le coin repas intĂŠrieur et les espaces extĂŠrieurs du jardin et de la terrasse. The Italian kitchen in lacquered glass and granite opens onto the indoor and outdoor dining area, and is surrounded by lush gardens and wooden decks.
L’eau sombre de la piscine en pierre de lave reflète les nuances du ciel et se fond dans la mer, comme si les mornes étaient des îles. The dark water of the lava stone pool reflects the nuances of the sky, seemingly blending into the sea, giving the hills the appearance of islands.
Partout les solides volets coulissants en bois permettent de sÊcuriser les bâtiments en cas de cyclone. Throughout the house, the solid wooden sliding shutters can be closed quickly and effectively, securing all of the buildings during threatening weather.
De plain pied avec les pièces intérieures, les terrasses en ipé prolongent les espaces de vie jusqu’au bord de la falaise. On the same level with the interior flooring, wooden decks extend the living areas all the way to the edge of the cliff.
Partout l’effet miroir des bassins a été utilisé pour accentuer l’élégance des colonnes. Mirror effects are repeatedly used throughout the villa to accentuate the elegance of the columns.
Typiques de l’architecture tropicale, les vérandas entourent les bâtiments de la partie jour, les protégeant du soleil et de la pluie. Typical tropic verandas surround the living areas, protecting them from sun and rain.
Les larges ouvertures des pièces de jour apportent lumière et ventilation indispensables au confort. Large, inviting windows allow a flood of light and ventilation.
Les routes et les parkings en pavés de granit ajoutent à l’aspect accueillant et raffiné de l’entrée. Situés sur un niveau inférieur, ils se font discrets de l’intérieur. The granite roads and parking areas add to the natural and refined feel of the entrance. Located on a lower level, they are almost unseen from indoors.
Totalement désolidarisée de la structure porteuse en béton armé, la charpente à brisure de coyau repose sur une double sablière calculée pour résister aux vents cycloniques. The slanted «coyau» roof sits on a double plate and is calculated to resist the strongest hurricane winds. It is completely independent from the reinforced concrete frame that supports it.
Les chapes intérieures en béton ciré et les charpentes peintes en gris contrastent avec les murs blancs et confèrent à l’ensemble un aspect monacal reposant. The interior screeds and polished concrete, gray frames contrast with white walls, lending an almost monastic ambience.
Les perspectives et transparences des chambres et salles d’eau agrandissent les espaces intérieurs. Dans les salles d’eau, ouvertes sur des patios privés, la lumière est amplifiée par le jeu des miroirs. Interesting perspective and transparency in the bedrooms accentuate the interior space. In the bathrooms, the light is amplified by the play of mirrors opening onto the private patios.
L’accès aux bungalows se fait par des passerelles sur pilotis au milieu des rochers, des arbres et des fleurs dont la plupart sont d’origine. Access to each of the bungalows is via wooden walkways, traveling past the rocks, trees and flowers, most of which are indiginous to the original site.
Tout a été fait lors du choix de l’implantation des bungalows et à l’occasion des travaux pour préserver la nature. Les «roches à ravets» particulièrement spectaculaires, autour desquelles viennent s’incruster les terrasses en ipé, constituent un décor naturel exceptionnel. While designing the architecture and choosing the location of the bungalows it was mandatory to preserve the existing natural surroundings. The wooden terraces are embedded in the existing rock, creating a particularly spectacular, natural setting.
Les terrasses couvertes et bien ventilées des bungalows offrent aux invités des espaces de vie privée. Each bungalow’s covered terrace offers guests a wellventilated and private living space.
La grande coursive dessert à ses deux extrémités des espaces intimes dédiés au repos ou à la remise en forme.
Intimate spaces dedicated to relaxation or fitness occupy the two extremities of the large veranda.
Chaque bungalow, conçu comme une petite maison individuelle, est composé d’une partie nuit avec salle d’eau et d’une partie jour avec terrasse couverte, patio, terrasse et piscine. Each bungalow was designed as an independent house and consists of a sleeping area, bath and living area with a covered terrace, patio, and pool.
