Calyx offers support and accommodations for families and caregivers while visiting loved ones experiencing extended hospital stays. Informed by thorough research on similar facilities, Calyx was designed to offer healthy distractions, a supportive atmosphere, and opportunities for connection with individuals facing similar circumstances. With spaces that provide mental and physical support for a variety of user profiles, Calyx is a peaceful, comforting, and secure environment that will be home to many over the course of its lifetime.
Located adjacent to Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, Calyx supports not only its residents, but also hospital employees and community members. Sitting at 82,500 square feet, the building holds spaces for connection, care, and refuge. This includes 24 rooms for residents + staff, along with support areas providing childcare, counseling, and physical fitness. Calyx’s flexible spaces further facilitate meaningful connections among residents by fostering a sense of community through family-style meals and collaborative activities.

In order to create an informed design that best serves the potential users of Calyx, the designers conducted several interviews. The interviewees shared their experiences of the care of children in the hospital and their families. Two especially influential interviews were with a previous staff member at facility similar to Calyx and an oncology nurse who has connected with countless children and families throughout her career.
“Parents can’t properly care for their child if they’re not taking care of themselves.”
- Oncology Nurse
“Parents and families sometimes need just as much help and care as their loved ones in the hospital”
- Ronald McDonald Staff Member

Stable Minds seeks to provide a secure establishment for nourishment, creativity, and reflection. The goal is to provide a space that all community members can build relationships with one another as well as a connection to animals. This construction connects to three definitions of the word stable by providing an element of each term: a horse stable, the stability of a person’s mind, and the establishment of a relationship. The space is set to allow the users to leave feeling secure and replenished as they explore the perspective of other humans and animals navigating the journey through life.
Stable Minds is a Student Wellness Center renovated from the historic Horse Barn at the University of Wisconsin-Madison located on Elm Street. Inspired by the previous design, Stable Minds incorporates several elements from the original structure. The original horse stables are incorporated throughout the plan as visual barriers for cafe seating, located on the first floor, and group therapy, located in the basement. The layout of the plan was inspired by the journey through life, or in other words, a horse’s journey through a stable in addition to several meanings of the word stable.
: of a horse
“a building set apart and adapted for keeping horses”
: of a relationship
“not likely to change or fail; firmly established”
: of a person
“sane and sensible; not easily upset or disturbed”
The logo of Stable Minds comes from the structure and core of the building because, without this, the building would not stand. The “T” within the building’s name is a replica of the truss system located on the third floor. Within the plan, this system is kept visible in order to connect the occupants to the deeper meaning of the wellness center.
THERAPY
: of a relationship
The first floor of Stable Minds holds a variety of spaces that allow the users to build meaningful connections with one another. This floor encompasses the ‘stable’ which is another word for home base, consisting of the reception area, retail space, and cafe.
: of a horse
The basement of Stable Minds encompasses the ‘wild’ parts of life. The basement consists of a multi-use workout facility, pet therapy intake, in addition to drop-in pet therapy. The pet therapy dogs are free to run ‘wild’ within the space as they care for individuals through their presence.

: of a person
The second floor is where one goes to gain stability. This floor is where the private pet therapy spaces are located as well as the shared office and the “away” swings. This floor resembles a calm and steady space as the occupants share their personal journeys through therapy and conversation.

The goal of this design is to create a collaborative space that allows for personal development while integrating elements of Boston’s history - the buildings location. A flexible floor plan allows for collaborative work and promotes a new style of hybrid work, allowing employees to connect with others in the office. The layout brings workers together, connecting employees from different departments and encouraging teamwork within the NEXT office. Through wayfinding elements and other design selections, the design of the NEXT office emphasizes the integration of people and history within the workplace.
The color red, one of Boston’s state colors, is seen throughout the branding which connects directly to a famous Boston site, the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile-long path through Boston, Massachusetts, that passes by 16 locations significant to the history of the United States. The site is identified through its red brick color giving it the name Freedom Trail ‘Red’. Inspired by events from Boston’s history, the plan consists of a connective path throughout the entire floor in order to collaborate users with way-finding and historic appreciation.
Gathering information from the famous site in Boston, the concept develops even further by connecting the direct path of the Freedom Trail into the plan of the NEXT space. Three individualized sections arose from the trail path that aided the space planning in addition to a prominent way-finding feature.
