Conceptual Tectonic Model

HYBRID CONCEPT
POST AND BEAM / TRUSS STRUCTURE
THE SYSTEM_A grand steel gesture of the façade establishes a new volume to the aesthetic of the street and sidewalk. Influencing users’ perception of space and scale, both externally and internally, the cantilevered façade brings a distinctive identity to the structure that alters the perceived size and massing of the building from the exterior similar to a gantry crane. In this instance, the bracing motif of the conceptual model is simply expressed as an element hung from the structure of the main massing. The cross bracing offers a tactile connection to the structure of the façade that users can become immersed in. Other exterior opportunities are offered in the user experience through an outdoor terrace suspended above the street edge offering panoramic views or outdoor gathering areas. The suspended condition also presents the opportunity to internally define spatial hierarchies and transitions between programs, continuing to contribute to the sense of openness or enclosure. Influencing spatial organization, the cantilevered façade defines a clear entry space that has protection from harsh elements and required ventilation. At the street level, a stramp plaza and grand stair corridor expression becomes a public space that is inviting and supported by the aesthetic and formal language of the structure. With a vision to influence the interaction of the urban context, this sequence focuses on the experience of the exterior to invite users to the interior.

While private and public interior spaces serve different purposes and have distinct characteristics, they are interconnected and contribute to the overall fabric of the function of the building and design intent. Effective management, design, and utilization of both types of areas are essential for creating functional, attractive, and vibrant indoor environments that meet the needs of the individuals and communities that make up Downtown Gulfport. Direct off-street accessibility make public interior spaces on the ground level open to the public without restriction, emphasizing the need for proper circulation, privacy, and wayfinding. Large volumes must funnel heavy amounts of traffic up and through each portion with intent and proper direction. Though the urban context has the need for easy navigation through the building, it also highlights the communal function the building must accommodate. With various activities and interactions among diverse groups of people with various roles in the building, each sector of the site must cater to multiple needs at the same time. Dividing each floor by privacy needs allows the diversity of activities within the envelope to have enough space and support to serve users best. Overall, public and private spaces should aim for an interconnectedness and coordination that achieves inclusive outcomes for anyone that interacts with the structure. Balancing the accessibility and openness of public areas with the privacy and functionality of private spaces contributes to the overall usability and efficiency of the building’s interior layout.
