“BLUE NOTE VILLAGE”

The subject of the Edward Wayne Barnett/Audrey Spencer-Horsely studio, this community engagement project partners with the nonprofit Hood Huggers International in Asheville, NC. This proposal for a community space serves as an incubator for social enterprise, art, and environment in the historically Black Burton Street neighborhood. The idea of quilting drives the design, from a method that ties the diverse program together, to a language for material reclamation and reuse, to a visual technique of representation. This spread shows my final review board layout on the wall.

This quote drives my thinking about the Blue Note Junction project, thinking about quilting as a forum for communitcation. The quilt metaphor drove the community engagement aspect of the project, quilt squares

facilitating conversations with the public about their dreams for the site. The idea of the village also derives from the community engagement trip, where the kids were really excited to move the model pieces and “make a

village,” an idea that fits very well with the varied program and aspirations of BNJ. The Village functions as public space, important for the preservation of intangible heritage in the neighborhood, such as the art of quilting itself, as well as the clients’ goals of fostering social enterprise, art, and environment. To hold memory, the first phase,

mainly artist studios, is made of reclaimed materials from important sites in the neighborhood, especially those

two, larger buildings with vernacular domestic design features will host a commercial kitchen, retail space, admin space, and recycling. The third and final phase is the construction of three larger buildings collected under one

“ENVIRONMENTAL HORIZONS MIDDLE SCHOOL” The Environmental Horizons Middle School is designed to be a magnet school for students in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Students will spend half-days at the school engaging with curriculum focused around the environment on both a local and global scale. The built environment reflects this narrative, formally designed in reponse to environmental sun and wind conditions which, in conjunction with thoughtful material use, result in a carbon-neutral building. The first floor labs have direct access to the Rivanna river watershed ecosystem.

Instead of walls and hallways, lounge areas allow students to observe others learning. An integrated farm and compost area allow students to interact with the local ecosystem.

This urban retreat sits along the Harlem River in the Inwood neighborhood of New York City. The building is composed of two circulation spirals that wrap around each other, one accessed from the city side, and the other from the waterfront park. They step upward in terraces that hold the program, idicated by color in the drawings, progressively getting quieter as they go higher, culminating in a rooftop garden. In the middle are the cores and supports for the building, which creates moments to cross between each spiral. Each sectional change serves to differentiate rooms, rather than full walls, creating a very versatile environment. Ramps wrap around the outside within a double skin glass facade.

//4 This design-build project was an eightweek summer endeavor, in which I, as part of a group of ten students, designed and built the elements of this outdoor room on the shore of Montana’s Flathead Lake for 100 Fold Studio. The title of ‘Breathing Room’ reflects the client goals of to connect visitors to nature, with a focus on the cyclical flows of the water, the wind, and human breathing. Using handpicked cedar timbers, slabs, and pickets, we created two fences that respond to each other and welcome visitors to the site. The fence posts, as well as the curved portion are themselves made of pickets, allowing the entire fence to read as one object.

A 16-foot long slab creates a bench built into the fence. Ten movable stools mimic the visual language of the bench and can be deployed around the site.

“WRAPPING”

The title Wrapping describes both of the major tectonic intentions of the project. A band of circulation and public secondary use spaces wraps its way through the towers of units with a series of bridges. The facade also wraps around the exteriors of the towers, uniting the project with its vertical panels. The facade is operable from inside each unit. The secondary program consists of two working spaces, a rentable community space to foster events, and a craft brewery to integrate the project in its Richmond site. Wet walls in each unit also align with other units within the aggregation.

The aggregation in the towers also allows light to enter the unit from three sides and provide cross-ventilation. The underground parking garage only allows for one vehicle per unit, but ample and accessible bike parking on the ground floor encourages bike use.

//6 The MIllennium Falcon is perhaps one of the most famous fictional spaceships of all time. Much of the first Star Wars movie takes place aboard the ship as it flies across the galaxy in the void of space, and its design serves that purpose. But what if it crashed-landed onto a planet, never to fly again?

What changes would need to be made to respond to its new environment? This redesign recreates the Falcon as a stationary dwelling with quarters tailored to meet the specific needs of its inhabitants centered around a central gathering area.

“REMIXED VERNACULAR”

This restauraunt along the downtown mall in Charlottesville seeks to expand the focus of mall users away from the single street of which it is comprised down the side streets. To do so, it breaks from the typical orientation of the rest of the mall, instead facing the side street. Entry to the building is through an open courtyard and the side of the building along the main street is stepped back to soften the corner.

The glass facade on the front of the building is made of tinted panels in a brick pattern, as brick is the predominant material along the mall.
