The University and the City

diretrizes de projeto

The design for the new São Chico campus building at the Rio Grande do Sul State University is shaped by the surrounding urban context, including the main church, square, historical architecture, and the city’s main avenue. Preserving views and integrating with the urban environment are central to the proposal.

Two concrete shear walls structure the building, aligning with key elements of the context and housing the auditorium at its lowest point.

O embasamento se articula com o entorno urbano e disitribui o usuário pelos espaços semi-públicos

A visually permeable atrium between these walls connects the upper levels, facilitating interaction between the building and the city.

The base connects the upper block with the lower levels and urban spaces, designed for public use on weekends and holidays. The plaza is centred around a preserved araucaria, creating a communal space integrated into the campus.

Municipal Market from Ponta Grossa (Brazil)

Type building: commercial 2021

1st prize national architecture competition

Location: Ponta Grossa-PR (Brazil)

Team: Henrique zulian | José Pedro Raccanello

More important than simply constructing a new building for the municipal market in Ponta Grossa - PR, is understanding what went wrong with the old structure and where we want to go. We must envision a special place that respects the city, blends with its surroundings, is accessible, and encourages leisure. This is not just about architecture; it is an act of dignity.

The municipal market is a historic public space for daily exchanges of authentic and fresh goods. It must evolve with new realities without losing its identity. Unlike a supermarket or shopping mall, a public market is a city space that showcases local cuisine, crafts, and regional culture.

Type project: educational 2023

Semifinalist International architecture competition

The project is not about creating an isolated educational centre within the lush environment, but rather about providing inclusive public infrastructure that is open, inviting, and welcoming. It aims to foster cultural exchange among residents, teachers, and volunteers, in line with the principles of the NGO Teach on the Beach.

Instead of a traditional internal courtyard, we designed a public plaza extending from the main street, offering a generous space for access and community activities. This plaza connects to a veranda where the buildings intersect, incorporating existing palm trees and creating open spaces for communal gardens and vegetable patches.

Art and Culture house

from Santa Maria - RS (Brazil)

Type project: cultural/ adpative reuse 2022

3rd prize national architecture competition Team: henrique zulian / josé pedro raccanello

Our proposal sought to integrate a new annex with the historic Railway Clubhouse and the context of Vila Belga. We considered both tangible heritage (historic buildings) and intangible heritage (railway memories and the Brique da Vila Belga market).

Elevated to the second level, the building uses a lightweight steel structure reminiscent of a footbridge or railway bridge, creating a gateway to the city. This design provides a sheltered space for gathering, leisure, and exhibitions.

The Central Plaza connects the public to the site, framing the historic facades of Vila Belga and serving as a venue for the Brique market.
