What is the Skilled Independent Visa?

The Skilled Independent Visa or the Visa 189 for Australia is the visa that allows a skilled individual to work and live in Australia permanently if he or she does not have any sponsorship from an Australian employer or nomination from a family member or nomination from a state/territory government. It has two streams under which you can apply – the Points-tested stream and the New Zealand stream. Here, we will explore the points-tested stream only.

Eligibility To be able to apply for this visa, there are certain conditions that are defined by the department.

You must have a relevant job and that occupation must be listed under the official list of skilled occupations of Australia. You have to get your skills assessed by a valid skill assessment authority. You should be under 45 years of age and have proof of evidence of competency in the English language. But most importantly, you have to pass the Points Test which defines this stream with a minimum score of 60 points. When you apply to SkillSelect for a work visa, you are asked to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), enter your occupation, your qualifications and skills. Based on that, you are given a point score and a rank among other migrants. If you get 60 points or above, you qualify for the visa. You will then have to wait for an invitation to apply for the visa after which you can apply.

The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) gives permanent residence in Australia. The cost of this visa is about $3670 (as stated on the department’s official website). The average processing time for Visa 189 is around 10 months.
