Kramer, Chairman and CEO, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company In his keynote speech at the World Rubber Week, he said he is optimistic about the future of the global tire industry and its indispensable role in people’s lives and commerce around the world. “Many of the highprofile tech companies that got the headlines have come and gone, but the world still moves on rubber. Our industry is still here, and I’m confident we’ll be here for the long term.”

Mr. Kramer discussed the factors that are shaping the global tire industry in the near future and Goodyear’s strategic response to those trends. “We believe our strategy is creating competitive advantage for Goodyear and providing opportunities for everyone along the rubber and tire supply chain.” .

At the same time, he reminded the stakeholders that “value for all of us is ultimately created in the marketplace, by consumers and endusers of our products.

We can never forget that.”

According to him, the growth of the middle class, especially in developing markets, will be a key driver for industry growth, according to Kramer. “The continuing emergence of the middle class around the world and the love of mobility ingrained in the human spirit will lead to increased vehicle sales in emerging

markets. That translates into tire volume growth for decades to come.”

Mr. Kramer also sees growth opportunities in mature markets. “In mature markets such as North America and Western Europe, the growth is being driven by the changing mix to highvalueadded tires with increasing technology. Profitable segments such as winter tires, SUV tires and light truck tires offer higher margins as informed consumers

pollo Tyres inaugurated two Tyre Playgrounds near Chennai, in the southern part of India. These playgrounds have been created using wornout or endoflife tyres (ELT) for the kids of Senakuppam and Vallakottai villages, just outside Chennai.

Satish Sharma, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, Apollo Tyres Ltd inaugurated the playgrounds, located inside the community schools, along with with the head of the local Panchayats and the School Headmasters.

Commenting on the Tyre Playgrounds, Satish Sharma, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, Apollo Tyres Ltd said, “As per a research commissioned by us, very soon India will have 100 million+ endoflife tyres every year, without proper mechanisms in place to recycle

or dispose off these tyres. As a responsible company, we have been working towards tackling this issue of discarded tyres.

From expanding our retreading footprint, to the launch of Go The Distance pitch in Old Trafford, UK, and now these play structures, all showcase ways we have been working towards the reuse or recycling of discarded tyres.”

Each of these playgrounds has been created using nearly 200 radial tyres, under company’s umbrella environment initiative, Habitat Apollo. Depending on the success of this pilot project of creating play structures using wornout tyres, the company will look at replicating it at multiple locations across the country, with the villages around Apollo Tyres’ manufacturing facilities, as the first targets.

The two village schools in Senakuppam and Vallakottai were identified for the Tyre Playgrounds, as they lacked play structures. Structures like

These important new tools are improving the already outstanding record of retread performance to levels never seen before.

First, do some basic reviewing of the retread industry and get the facts.

Next, visit the prospective vendor’s factory before making a decision. Retreading is essentially a manufacturing operation, starting with the worn casing (the body of the tire), which is prepared and then retreaded.

Marvin Bozarth, an internationally recognized retread expert, who in his career has been a truck driver, a fleet manager and a tire retreader, said, “I tell fleet managers

to not buy anyone’s product until after they have visited the plant.” There are a number of different retreading techniques that are used, all of which can provide satisfactory results when employed by a top quality retreader.

According to Bozarth, the differences among these techniques are far less significant than how well any given supplier follows the recommended procedures for the systems he is using. “People ask me all the time which system (mold-cure or pre-cure) is best. All will do a good job and provide a good quality product, if done properly. The retread will only be as good as the care and quality of material used to make it.” Bozarth added.

When visiting the vendor’s factory, look for a clean, well-organized shop. Pay particular attention to the casing inspection area. This is where incoming casings are checked to be sure each is structurally sound and can be retreaded. Ask to see the non-destructive testing equipment being used. This enables the retreader to determine whether the casing has structural damage. A good casing, with no structural damage, can usually be retreaded two or three times.

Ask for a list of customers the retreader is currently serving. Try to get names of fleets that have operations roughly similar to your fleet size and type of trucks, miles driven annually per truck, same operating area, etc.

If the retreader can’t give you several references, he probably doesn’t have any customers that he knows he is doing a good job for.” said Bozarth.

In the retreading business, you are buying more than just tires, you are also buying service. Ask how quickly the retreader can turn around tires, what his warranty is, what type of pick-up and delivery service he provides.

“For some fleets, they need tires back within two or three days, other fleets don’t have a problem with a 7 to 10 day turnaround,” Bozarth continued. “The retreader has to be able to meet the fleet manager’s service needs for the relationship to work.

Use the retreader for more than a tire supplier, consider him a consultant to the fleet and use him.”

“A good retreader knows what is working for other fleets and what isn’t working. Limit the initial purchase contract to three months. After this initial period, negotiate the price and service contract on an annual basis. The three-month trial period is long enough to determine if the retreader can meet the fleet’s needs, without the fleet making a long-term commitment to a supplier that might not be acceptable.

Once the retreader has shown his capability to service the fleet, an annual review should be enough to assure that the fleet is getting the best price and services.

If there is any major change in fleet operations that can affect tire wear, make sure the existing retreader can meet future needs.

If not, find a new retreader. It is a mistake to think that what works today is going to work forever.” said Bozarth. “The retreader has to be able to meet the changing needs of the fleet.”

study conducted by Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) has found out that occurrence of extreme temperature events are becoming more frequent in recent years in Kottayam, the major rubber growing area in Kerala. An analysis of the data of daily maximum and minimum temperatures from 1970 to 2010, conducted by the Climate Change and Ecosystem Studies Division of RRII showed clear indications of the warming trend which can be attributed to the threat of changing climate in this region.

The production of latex in rubber trees is closely related to the atmospheric temperature. The productivity of the crop decreases as the atmospheric temperature goes up beyond a threshold level. Earlier studies clearly indicated that the increase in atmospheric temperature would adversely affect the rubber production in the traditional rubber growing regions in India. Thus the impact of changing climate in this region may seriously affect rubber cultivation, if the present warming trend continues. Since the socioeconomic sustainability of the region is highly dependent on rubber cultivation, proper precautions and climate resilient measures may be adopted by the farmers to overcome the adverse effects of temperature stress in rubber cultivation under the changing scenario of climate in May - June 2015

Significant advances in tire repair technology and materials have taken place in the past few years, assuring a very high percentage of damaged tires becoming able to be returned to full service once properly repaired. Frequency of occurrence of warming days (with temperature above 320C) also increased at a rate of 0.56% per year.

The number of days with minimum temperature decreased significantly, indicating the warming nights are becoming more in Kottayam during recent years. The monthly highest temperature showed an increase of 0.0380C per year during 1970 to 2010. Persistence of high temperature consecutively for six days or more represents a warm spell.

The number of such warm spells increased and the gaps between warm spells became shorter in recent years. The frequent occurrence of such high temperature events is a clear indication of changing climate leading to the warming of this region.

If such events persist, it may cause serious impacts on the agricultural ecology of the region. The impacts of such phenomenon in the production and productivity of agricultural crops in South East Asian and European countries have already been reported. Extreme temperature events in the form of heat wave and cold wave in the northern states of India impacts severely on crop production and quality of grains leading to serious socioeconomic consequences.

are blessed by the presence, under one roof, of all segments within the rubber value chain from farmer to rubber product end user and this offers us a unique opportunity to discuss and address some of the major challenges facing our industry and try to make the rubber world a better place for everyone in the future.

There is no doubt that as we enter the fifth year of disappointing global demand growth in response to the subpar macroeconomic recovery following the Global Financial Crisis, we are into a midterm period of excess capacity throughout the rubber industry. This is a general phenomenon seen by most commodities, including the metals, which has been exacerbated by the continued economic slowdown in China.

However, the longer term horizon remains strong for rubber as the continued industrialisation, urbanisation and increased personal mobility within the major developing economies of China and India is forecasted to continue apace throughout the coming decade.

He said that with around 70 per cent of natural rubber and 50 per cent of synthetic rubber going into tyre production, global rubber consumption is expected to follow the increased tyre manufacture accordingly.

In defence of this point, he referred to the forecasted growth in tyre sales and vehicle part. Passenger car tyre sales are expected to rise from 1.23 billion units in 2014 to 1.72 billion units by 2023, a 35 per cent growth, while commercial vehicle tyre sales would rise from 479 million units in 2014 to 727 million units by 2023, a 52 per cent growth. The current 1.2 billion vehicles in use around the world is predicted to rise to as many as 1.6 billion towards the May - June 2015

In addition to providing infrastructural support for these retreading outlets, Apollo Tyres also trains the employees of ARZ at its stateoftheart Retread Research and Training Centre in Chennai.

Seeing the demand for quality retread, which is not widely available in the country, the company is targeting to have 20 branded retread outlets by the end of this fiscal for a panIndia presence.

All truckbus radials are capable of multiple retreads due to the strong carcass, and each retread costs only 25-27% of the cost of a new tyre, while providing nearly 90% of the mileage of a new tyre.

The 2014 consumption of 11.9 million tonnes of natural rubber for all markets, tyre and nontyre, is projected to grow to 16.5 million tonnes by 2023. The comparable figures for all synthetic rubber markets are 16.8 million tonnes in 2014 rising to 21.5 million tonnes by 2023, he added.

JK Tyre showcases new product concepts at IRE 2015

T

he tyre maker has presented its new product range at the eighth edition of the Indian Rubber Expo and Tyre show in Delhi. JK Tyre chose the 2015 Indian Rubber Expo (IRE) as a plat-

form to display its new range of products. Catering to different product segments, the range included tyres for passenger cars, trucks, light commercial vehicles and farm equipment.

Commenting on the occasion, VK Misra, Technical Director, JK Tyre and Industries Limited, said, “At JK Tyre, we have been focussing on R&D as an intrinsic part of our business and bringing cutting edge technologies to delight our customers and partners. Participating at IRE 2015 is an opportunity for us to share ideas with industry partners and showcase how our research and development capabilities are helping us deliver better, fuel efficient and dependable products.”

The tyre maker showcased its ‘Ultra Hi’ range of tyres at the event. These are 17 inch tyres that have a low aspect ratio and are made up of a multi-layer tread compound and silica technology with colours matching the car aesthetics. This concept was conceived and developed in JK Tyre’s Tech Centre in India and is being tested at global centres for worldwide distribution.

The next product that was displayed at the event by the tyre maker was the JK UX1 tyre. This range is developed by the company for luxury premium cars such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

JK Tyre also displayed its soon to be launched products across categories. In the passenger car category it showcased high performance asymmetric tyres, designed for mid-size sedans available in the country, including Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Underlining its international strategy, JK Tyre also showcased products like Ultima-XPC1, America Selecta Plus and Turbo, which it currently exports to its key export markets in US and Latin America.

okohama India has introduced Mud–Terrain (M/T+) tyres, as part of its Geolandar series in the country. The tyre maker says that Geolandar M/ T+have been specifically designed for serious off-Roading and are well-equipped to deflect lateral impacts during extreme conditions.

Designed for high performance and maximum visual impact, the Mud Terrain tyres are currently available in two sizes, 31x10.50 R15 and 33x12.50 R15. The Geolandar M/T+ has new dual protection bars, added to enhance cut and puncture resistance.

While its stepped central groove is said to enhances surface grip.

India - selfsufficient in synthetic rubber

I

n what can possibly be seen as great news for its rubber industry, India is expected to become selfsufficient in synthetic rubber with an expected threefold jump in the production capacity in 2017. This will improve raw material supply to tyre manufacturers in the country. At present it is estimated that most of India’s synthetic rubber requirements are met through imports. For becoming selfsufficient in its synthetic rubber, India would have to spend $1 billion less per year on imports, thereby reducing its trade deficit that stood at $139 billion last year.

Mr. Stephen Evans, SecretaryGeneral of the International Rubber Study Group, said: “For the last many years Indian demand was way above production capability. Now with new plants going on stream, suddenly India will become selfsufficient in synthetic rubber production.”

Michelin showcases Selfseal at Challenge Bibendum Don Detore

CHENGDU, China—Michelin used the Challenge Bibendum to spotlight several of its latest tire innovations, including its Selfseal technology.

The tire maker touts the technology as a unique rubber compound that plugs holes in tread that has been punctured, keeping the tires safe for the road.

Inside the tire, Michelin said, is a thin layer of rubber compound, composed of natural rubber. The compound surrounds the area and the object causing the protrusion, keeping air from escaping and the tire pressure at its previous level. Once the object leaves the tire, the sticky compound plugs the hole.

Michelin demonstrated this technology several times over the course of the three-day Challenge Bibendum, a global summit that focused on sustainable mobility issues, particularly in urban areas. During each demonstration, participants would drive Volkswagen passenger cars equipped with Selfseal tires over ramps with nails protruding from them.

According to a Michelin spokesman, all Selfseal tires performed as designed during

demonstrations at Challenge Bibendum. The only tires to fail the test, the spokesman said, were standard tires, which were used on some of the vehicles to illustrate the difference.

Michelin said the greatest need for the Selfseal technology is in China, where one vehicle averages one puncture every 5,700 miles. In the U.S., Michelin said, a puncture occurs once in every 33,000 miles, while in Europe, the average is one puncture every 48,000 miles.

The technology is due to hit the original equipment passenger tire market in Europe in 2015. The technology won’t reach North America for at least two years, the spokesman said.

In addition to the Selfseal technology, Michelin showcased its Premier A/S tire line, which it said offers better grip on wet pavement, even when worn; its Near Zero Growth technology, which the tire maker claims makes aircraft tires lighter and more durable; and its UltraFlex technology, which makes agricultural tires more flexible, thus reducing

fuel consumption and limiting rut depth, according to Michelin.

The air pressure are always be checked when the tyre is cold preferably in the morning.

Inflation should never be checked when the tyres are hot or after a trip.

What is “Dual matching”?

It means matching of 2 tyres by a set procedure before they can be selected for a dual fitment position. Standard procedures are available for dual matching for different sizes of tyres. If the pair of tyres are not matched for dual fitment, it can result in failure of the tyres resulting in costly loss or fatal accident.

We occasionally section repair radial wide-based tires that could wind up on the steer axle of a local delivery truck, such as a dump truck or a waste hauler truck. We think our repairs are done very well, but would you do a section repair in a tire for steer axle use?

I would not put a tire on the steer axle of a truck if it had been section repaired. The reason is not because I think the repair would not hold up, but if the tire was to have any kind of failure, and the vehicle was involved in an accident, the blame would fall on the repaired tire - even if it had been run flat - because someone shot a hole in it. It would not matter why the tire failed, the blame would be placed on the section repair.

We are finding a small-molded triangle at the end of the date code marking on some of the casings we receive for retreading.

It only shows up on some of the casings with a three-number date code and never on the ones with a four-number date code.

This triangle means the tire was manufactured in the 90’s.

At that time, having the triangle was not required, so you will find some tires manufactured in the 90’s that do not have the triangle. Since all tires manufactured today are required to have a four-number date code, the triangle is no longer used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of widebase tires and traditional duals?

There are four factors to consider: fuel economy, weight, availability, and tread life. Here’s how each stacks up: Fuel economy: Compared to standard compound tires on steel wheels, widebase tires on aluminum rims would probably offer a fuel economy advantage.

Compared to tires with “fuel efficient” tread compounds on aluminum rims, the wide base tires may offer little or no measurable advantage.

Increased revenue: A vehicle that reaches its weight limit before reaching its cubic capacity limit can benefit from the fact that four wide base tires on aluminum wheels weigh less than eight conventional tires on steel rims. The reduced vehicle weight means more cargo weight can be carried. Most interest in these tires has come from bulk haulers. Mixed-service applications have been the slowest to adapt since durability and retreadability issues are so vital to their operation.

Why should I check the lug nuts 50-100 miles after the wheels have been installed?

When dual wheels are installed the bolted joint that encompasses the stud, hub/drum, wheels, and fastener is going to flex as soon as the axle is loaded. The initial flexing results in joint settling that can cause the wheels to become loose. By checking the lug nuts after the first 50-100 miles of service, any joint settling that has occurred can be corrected by tightening or replacing the fasteners.

Why should I pay extra to properly repair a flat tire when plugging is so much cheaper?

Unless you have xray vision any damage on the inside of the tire cannot be detected when plugging the tire on the rim. By

removing the tire from the rim, inspecting the interior, and repairing the damage with a rubber stem and a repair unit, the integrity of the tire can be restored or potential problems can be identified. Proper AMS Gandhi tire repair also protects the casing so the tire can either be retreaded or returned for credit.

Is there an age limit to casings?

The simple answer is no. You cannot determine the retreadability of a casing based solely on age.

Air pressure maintenance, the number of repairs, and the number of retreads also play important roles so the age is just another component of the inspection criteria.

In fact, most truck tire manufacturers have at least a 5-year warranty on their casings, yet it is not uncommon to see the life span of a well maintained casing in the correct applications perform beyond that time period.

Is it legal to repair a steer tire?

A steer axle tire with a puncture repair in the crown area that is 3/8” or less in diameter can be repaired using a rubber stem and a repair unit. If the injury is larger than that or in the shoulder or sidewall the tire can be repaired with a section repair but it cannot be returned to the steer axle.

I run fully loaded but come home empty. What can I do to reduce irregular wear?

You can reduce your tire air pressure based on the load/ inflation charts, however you must be very careful to increase the air pressure when you are running loaded. Most fleets feel that this is an unsatisfactory and not a practical solution since it leaves the door open to low tire pressure if you forget to reinflate. Unfortunately, there is no other way to reduce uneven wear in this scenario.

Should my air pressure be what’s listed on the sidewall?

The air pressure listed on the sidewall is the recommended air pressure for the maximum tire load. The maximum tire load is also lsited on the sidewall. To be safe, most drivers will inflate their tire to this level. But, if you want to get the maximum life out of your tire and you know your actual tire load, then there are load/inflation charts which can help you determine recommended tire air pressure.

Why are there speed ratings on some medium and heavy-duty truck tires and not on others?

Tires that may be used in Europe will generally have a speed rating or symbol. In the United States, with a few exceptions, the only truck tire with maximum speed ratings posted on the casing will be local use tires, such as tires for dump trucks, concrete mixers, etc.

Once the tread design is worn off the radial truck tire casing with a maximum 55 mph rating, is it legal to operate it at a higher speed after it has been retreaded with light, high speed tread designs?

I do not know of any law that addresses this, but it is not a good idea. The heavy-duty casing would likely become overheated and fail, if driven at high speeds.

Is there any situation where plugging a hole in a tire and not using a patch would be an acceptable industry practice?

Not according to tire manufacturers. Using a plug without a patch is a common practice for repairing tires that are not used on public roads because repairing a tire on a lawnmower, slow moving farm tractor, and similar types of equipment appears to present little risk.

With that in mind, I would still recommend that the tire be removed from the rim and inspected before repairing for the safety of the tire technicians.
