G R A P HIC STANDARDS MANUAL

The following graphic system for the flag of the National Catholic Register is a structure for communicating and presenting our brand logically, clearly and with distinction. These standards should be used as a guide for print and electronic presentations of our signature. The focus of the Register’s graphic identity is its flag.

The Register flag (right) is comprised of hand drawn letterforms loosely based on Poynter Gothic Display Roman and our papal emblem which was created from the base elements of the Vatican emblem. The Register emblem consists of the tiara, infulae, keys and rays

RAYS INFULAE

TIARA KEYS

7- 5 INCHES WIDE

The Register Flag is designed specifically for usage that is over 5.5 inches wide.

Number of Rays Reduced

A smaller version of the original flag (right) has has been designed for usage at 4 to 1-3/4 inches wide

4-1.75 INCHES WIDE

Adjustments have been made to the logo art for reproduction at smaller sizes; therefore, it is important to always use the appropriate size required. See flags page x.

GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL

The Papal Emblem The tiara and crossed keys are the adopted symbol of affinity with Rome. Heraldically, the tiara’s triple crown represents the authority of the popes. Like a Bishop’s mitre, the tiara has two infulae (ribbons) hanging from the back. This tiara was presented to Paul VI by the people of Milan, his former archdiocese, and is on display at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The two keys represent the “Keys of the Kingdom” given to Peter by Christ. The National Catholic Register added rays that represent light, hope, and truth. This addition was made in order to help visually communicate the Register’s mission and approach to journalism.

The Flag Type Hand-drawn by typographer Gerard Huerta, the flag typography was designed to provide the Register with a distinctively classic identity. The type design is based on the previous version of the Register flag created in 1996. The flag type should always print as 100% black.

5pt Rule

The Rose Rule This 5point rule can and should be used as a design element when applicable. The rule is used to ground the flag on the front page and can be used as a secondary page element in the design of promotional materials. The rule is not a part of the flag and should not be placed within the flag’s “clear zone.”

Mission Statement

To show how the faith impacts and transforms the world. In other words: Not an inward look at how the world is impacting the faith not a navel-gazing look in which Catholics consider how Catholicism is affecting Catholics, but outward looking. The Register’s front page is made up of five stories, each of which can fulfill that mission.

Mission & Benefit Statement The redesign goal of the National Catholic Register is to create greater synthesis between content and visuals. To better integrate the verbal (words) and visual (graphic) elements so that they blend, or reflect and reinforce one another. One of the highest priorities has been to enhance the publications readability via typefaces designed specifically for that purpose. The redesign will present to the reader a more distinctively unique visual identity that embodies excellence, sophistication and quality. Our new look will provide better page, graphic and story design structures for communicating our editorial mission based on the design philosophy of hierarchy. Our new nameplate (flag) has been designed to reflect our heritage, closeness to the church and the hope of our message. The redesign will also help the reader more clearly differentiate between news, features and advertising content. The new visual representation of the Register will make the newspaper more modern, engaging, and exciting for our audience. We will also be better able to serve our readers, appeal to our demographics and compete with other catholic news sources and media. The Register design stylebook and new templates will provide designers and editors with the necessary tools in which to accomplish our goals weekly. These tools will help built continuity and consistency in the identity.

Layout Philosophy “Design is Content, the National Catholic Register’s page designs should be functional, invisible, and nearly inseparable from the content and message itself. Each page design should incorporate a visual hierarchy of stories the create a pleasing easy to read visual sequence for the reader.

Page Grids The page grid rests on a six column structure for news and feature pages. The horizontal baseline grid which is aligned to the 11.5pt leading of the body text has been duplicated vertically to enhance consistentenct in spacing. The page vertical grid structure lives on its own layer and can be toggled on and off for the quick alignment of page and story elements, including advertisements. The document grid and the baseline grid work in unison to produce a ridid structure for the design of pages. Grid colors have also been developed to make working with them less obtrusive.

Page dimensions: page size: 13.5” x 22.75” image area: 12.75” x 21.25” Grids Baseline Grid: 11.5 pts Vertical Grid: 11.5 pts Document Grid: 2.3 pts Standard column width 6-cols is xxxxxx.

The Front Page Vision: Front-page stories, and the lead stories on inside news pages should all be packaged to serve the mission of showing how the Church impacts the world. Usage of our lead and secondary story package design philosophy will help accomplish the goal of our vision.



Page One Contents 1. A hard news story. This informs the reader about a new development or concrete action on an issue that is significant and relevant. These are often about secular issues of high interest to Catholics. 2. A human interest story. This is the story of an apostle or apostolate who has been inspired by his faith to make a difference in the lives of others. Here we want to show how real people help real people by using the faith. 3. An indepth look at an ongoing issue. We would like this to be a Register hallmark. It’s like the hard news story above, but instead of being mostly about a new development, it’s mostly about an ongoing trend. 4. A fourth story that is one of the above, preferably hard news or indepth. 5. Inperson interview, which survey and anecdotal data both tell us is successful at bringing readers into the paper from the outside. The inperson is a Q&A with a nationally or internationally known Catholic. Sometimes we have run inpersons with people who are closely associated with national or internationally known news events instead. page i design The Register front page design should be developed with a dominant lead story package and a secondary story package. The structure of the page design should be asymmetrical. Ideally the page design will be segmented into thirds. The visual sequence of the page should lead the reader downward by decreasing the size of story design elements.

Layout Philosophy The secondary story design should clearly identify itself as the as the second read in the visual sequence. The design should not compete with that of the lead package. It is not essential for the secondary story to incorporate a photograph. See specifications pg_ The placement of the secondary package in relation to the lead should also be considered. See examples pg_ See story specs page_

2. Cutline A (traditional) or Cutline B (always at the top of far right column) 3. Credit - when used with cutline A, should be at end of cutline text. When used with cutline B, should be at lower right of photo.

The secondary package can also consist of no more than 2 of the following optional elements: 1. Overline - Gill sans bold 13pt two to five word tag used at very top of lead story design 2. NCR Graphic Element - see list of sidebars and graphics. See sizing guidlines 3. Logo/Bug - special story labels. See sizing guidelines 4. Mug - See sizing and crop guidlines 5. Lift Quote 6. Grabber - Special deck that markets the story to the read. “Here’s why you should read this.

Alternative Story Forms The information is buried... The content is too complex... This needs to be explained visually... In an effort to better accommodate the readers who like to see story information in a concise visual format, altertnative story forms need to be developed (see samples page xxx). The following questions may be helpful in generating concepts for non traditional visual solutions for presenting stories. Questions to ask about the story design 1. What’s the relevance of this story? 2. Is this story part of a series? 3. Who is it appealing to? 4. How can it appeal to a broader audience? 5. What are the sidebar possibilities?

a. I will have a complete visual list of options.

6. Where’s the value for the reader? 7. What are the graphic possibilities?

a. I will have a complete visual list of options.

8. What are the internet possibilities? 9. What are the questions readers would want answered? 10. How can we leverage this to aid our mission? 11. What can the consumer’s ”do” with this story? 12. What would make this interesting to me?

Camauro

Graphic Subhead Poynter Gothic Text Bold. 10pt/9pt leading. Left aligned. No indents. .3 space after paragraph

The camauro has been part of the papal wardrobe since the 12th century. Until 1464, it was also worn by cardinals, without the ermine trim; from that date, the camauro became exclusively a papal garment. The papal camauro fell into disuse after the death of Pope John XXIII in 1963, but it was revived in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Miter Saturno

CNS PHOTO

This broad-brimmed red hat protects the Pope from sun and heat. Pope Benedict wore the saturno (in a reference to its shape, which vaguely resembles the ringed planet Saturn) during his Sept. 6 general audience. Pope John Paul II occasionally wore it during trips to warm countries in the early years of his pontificate, but later the saturno fell into disuse. Pope John XXIII was particularly partial to the hat, wearing it regularly during his pontificate from 1958 to 1963. The saturno has been a part of the papal wardrobe since the 14th century. Pope Benedict has shown a partiality for the traditional vestments of the papacy.

The miter is a tall folding cap, consisting of two similar parts (the front and back) rising to a peak and sewn together at the sides. Two short lappets always hang down from the back. The right to wear the miter is confined by Canon law to the pope, cardinals, bishops and abbots. Three types of miters are worn for different occasions.

Photo Editing When editing photographs for feature page lead stories keep in mind there are many other visual appproaches than that of the expected. Photographs on news pages and feature pages should need to be appropriate as well as stimulating for the reader. When editing images for lead stories, exhaust all of the available resources before settling for a low standard image.



Image Quality Images need to be a minimum of 200 dots per inch DPI in order to reproduce at a quality that is acceptable. Low resolution images can be hard for the readeer to see, and they also reflect negative ly on the conten of the story. Images that come off the internet (72 dpi) can be printed at half size. Before images are slugged with a story, confirm that the image meets technical standards with the graphics department. Photo Illustrations/composites Never “mortise” photographs. Overlaying photos (such as mug shots and photos that may add additional information) in order to create a single image is not appropriate for the Register front page or news pages. However, creating a grid of images that touch side by side is acceptable. These pages must maintain a high standard of journalistic integrity. This approach will enhance the seriousness of our reporting as well as aid our vision. Photo illustrations are appriate only on the following pages: In Depth Arts/Travel Culture of Life When creating photo illustrations for the following pages, they must be clearly credited as a photo illustration and include a list of source images.

Distorting the fonts in order to produce a type effect such as oulining, type on paths or 3-D are not appropriate on News and News feature pages. However, type effects are appropriate on Feature pages when used in illustrations or photo-illustrations that require text. It should be clear beyond a reasonable doubt, that the text has been incorporated into the illustration.
