CLEANSPACE PASS IT ON

DIRECTOR’S TREATMENT DEADBEAT FILMS LTD. CleanSpace is the beginning of a cleaner, greener London. Thousands of people living in the City have been waiting for this change, this movement, and finally it has arrived.

MOTIVATION Deadbeat wants Pass It On to feel like an inspirational call of action. Of course it should showcase how the app works, however, CleanSpace is a lot more than just an App. The CleanSpace Air Tag, acts as a symbolic baton of a new type of green perspective in our metropolis. Mood, atmosphere and feeling is vital. We should ignite the impression of a grassroots movement, from the ground up. This was initiated by London’s people and their actions to make a change to the city. Air quality is a serious subject which affects everyone on this Planet. Therefore I would like this video to have a strong sense of suspense. Time is running out and we have to make change, not tomorrow, not next month, but now. This feeling will be expressed through the sense of urgency in all of our ‘torch bearers’ and their attempt to complete as many green miles through as many London Boroughs as possible in 24 hours. The pace of the film will begin relatively relaxed, but build to an exhilarating crescendo in which our contestants are racing against time to complete their challenge and our audience at the edge of their seats. It is a symbolic challenge in innovative steps to improve air quality.

NARRATIVE

We will begin the film by introducing all of the films diverse characters. Intercutting between them, the characters will then take out their phones, fit the tag and open the CleanSpace app. From then on, we will follow each volunteer in chronological order. Beginning South, and working our way up the City, the film will begin in The London Borough of Lambeth. First following calmer, slower modes of transport such as ‘Mum’s’ School Run’s and commuters on their way to work. As the day progresses, we will follow slightly faster volunteers such as Lunch Time London Walking Groups and Air Pollution Students on their way to a mid-afternoon lecture in Greenwich. Time ticking, the pace now builds as we move into the afternoon. Running Groups and Bicycle Couriers speeding through the busy City of Westminster. They rush past businessman in taxi’s, stuck in traffic jams. In Sunset, we follow a trendy Hackney based artist, about to step into an overground station. He pauses and then walks through the busy streets of Brick Lane. Descending into the evening, we are now with solo runners, panting and sweating, weaving through the vibrant streets of Camden. The busy overground rushes past their heads.

NARRATIVE As dawn breaks, our final volunteer, a female runner reaches the end of her green mile. Panting up dark steps, illuminated only by street lamps, it is confusing exactly where we are. After reaching the finishing line, she looks at her readings on CleanSpace and all of the clean air she’s saved and smiles. Standing alone at the top of Hampstead Heath, she looks out to the open city waking up. A distant plane flies in the pink sky, leaving a long contrail across the sky. Perhaps another innovate activist, taking CleanSpace further and beyond. It is of most importance that after watching Pass It On, the audience should feel as if they completed the green mile themselves. Completely imümersed and inspired by the truly diverse range of people and modes of green transport, our viewers should feel the same surge of dedicated passion for clean energy.

SOUND Deadbeat is not interested in talking heads. All of the interviews will act like recited prose, accommodating the visuals of the volunteers performing their green mile. In voice-over, the volunteers will discuss the importance of CleanSpace. In their own words and relative to their individual stories, each volunteer will discuss the following: . Air pollution is manmade and so is the solution. . By working together we can improve the air we breathe. . If you get a tag you can play your part in creating a better world. Through the use of an immersive sound design, the voice over will fluidly weave and wind through the city. Familiar sounds of each Borough will be included, creating a personal experience of nostalgia, which the audience can identify to. Think Big Ben’s clock chimes in Westminster, busy shouts of Market Vendors in Hackney, and rock and roll buskers in Camden.

05

CHARACTERS

I feel that the majority of the characters will come out of our detailed research of green group activity in each Borough. The volunteers must live in the allocated borough and be actively involved in choosing the route for their clean mile For now, below are a few examples of volunteers we’d like to feature in the film: Students: King’s College (Air Pollution Studies) London Walking Groups Running groups Bicycle Couriers ‘Mums’ – School run Commuters (Highlighting the tags space within industry) Existing CleanSpace users

LOCATION Love it or hate it, it’s undeniable that there’s no place like London. Our film will not only showcase the city’s inhabitants, it will also celebrate it’s bustling streets, iconic landmarks and unique urban aesthetic. This is a site specific film, in which the character’s are symbiotic figureheads, physically and spatially representing their borough. There must be a relationship between character and landscape, as our volunteers cut through the space and spread the word of clean air in the busy junctions, residential streets and green spaces of London.

06

STYLE Our film will be cinematic. It’s slick, confident edge help elevate the importance of CleanSpace. It’s cinematography must also be personal and relatable, never making the audience feel out of reach of the experience. I imagine intimate, detailed shots of hands grasping handle bars and cycle wheels weaving through cars. This will then be juxtaposed with large wide shots of the characters winding through their landscape. A mix of slow motion and normal speed will help create an atmosphere of inspiration and achievement.
