WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description.

Cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces are all developable surfaces. Developable surfaces contain no Gaussian curvature, therefore they can be flattened onto a plane and constructed with standard materials.

Cylinders are comprised of parallel straight line segments running perpendicular to the profile curve.

Cones consist of evenly spaced lines connecting a profile curve and a vertex point. Tangent surfaces are simplified by tangent planes along the entire surface of two intersecting surfaces.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion.

Developable surfaces integrally connect the world of modelled forms using computer software to the physical bounds of construction in the real world. Forms can be broken down into an array of faces connected by edges and vertices to simplify curving geometry. This is useful because it is very difficult to construct double curving surfaces.

In the case of the Huyghe + Le Corbusier Puppet theatre, an enclosed performing space was built using 500 interlocking diamond shaped polycarbonate panels. Each panel is a unique puzzle piece broken down from an organic form. Fabrication of the undevelopable shape would be unconstructable without the simplification into triangular/diamond shapes.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation?

Digital fabrication is the process of manufacturing using data directly provided by architects and designers. It allows designers to have more control over the fabrication of materials that will be used to construct their vision. This process is possible through computer aided design programs and building information models. Architects, automotive engineers and industrial designers utilize many different modelling programs that have revolutionized representation from pencil on paper.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design?

Folding is an economical way of creating structure within a geometry. This is a valuable technique to use when experimenting with new materials to create self supporting structures.

Another advantage of incorporating folding into building design is the unique aesthetic of the folded form. The simple elegance of origami can be expanded into the grand scale of building design.
