A+! I liked this book. Despite its length, this book is worth reading. I loved the town and its people. I loved every character in this book because Lucy Score did such a great job of making them unique. Knox Morgan is *a chef's kiss* amazing. I liked how he struggled with his demons and changed over me. Naomi's rela onship with Waylay also warmed my heart.
Lucy is a Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon Kindle Store bestseller of roman c comedies and contemporary romance. Rural Pennsylvania gave her me and imagina on. She was the oldest of three bookworms.
Family dinners were o en silent as everyone read. At five, she taught her brother to write on the bathroom door. She began wri ng about Mayflower pilgrims in second grade and progressed to essays, ar cles, blogs, and books. Since her breakout hit "Pretend You're Mine," she's wri en full- me.

First-person chapters switch between Naomi Wi and Knox Morgan. To assist her twin sister Tina, Naomi Wi travels to Knockemout, Virginia. Naomi wants to help her sister because she skipped her wedding to a wealthy entrepreneur days earlier. During the rehearsal, Naomi squeezed out of a church bathroom window, realizing her mistake. She loses her car and money to her sister. Waylay, her 11-year-old daughter is le behind. Naomi bonds with the girl and accepts her guardianship.
Naomi Wi arrives in Knockmout, Virginia, wearing a daisy. Naomi needs coffee before mee ng her estranged twin sister Tina, who called her. Naomi sees a photo of her sister, who looks like her, above the cash register as a banned customer at the café. Knox Morgan enters as Naomi resolves the server issue. Naomi thinks the man looks "hot as hell" and "like he'd just stormed off a marauding Viking vessel". Naomi dislikes the man's rudeness despite their sharp banter. Naomi leaves the restaurant without her car. Knox drives her to the police sta on, assuming they towed it.
Knox no ces Naomi is unlike her twin. Naomi is classier than her sister, not just because of her daisy hair. He jokes about hog-tying Naomi to his truck if she refuses his ride to the police sta on. Naomi replies, “Your chivalry s nks”
Knox warns the police not to confuse Naomi with her troublemaker twin at the sta on. Naomi's car isn't towed, the police say. Knox guesses: “Your asshole sister stole your car”. Naomi collapses a er driving unprepared and exhausted. Knox offers a ride to her hotel.
Knox finds Naomi's hotel door open and the lock broken. He enters with Naomi. The bathroom mirror has "sucker" wri en in lips ck. A girl in the room is unse ling. Knox knows Waylay, Tina's 11-year-old daughter. Naomi felt like she "had been shot out of a cannon" when she discovered her sister had a daughter
Naomi can't decide. She calls her sister, Naomi's driver, for answers. She says she has "shit to do" and that her daughter would "hold her back". Knox and Waylay no ce Naomi's wedding dress as she unpacks. Knox called the police a er finding the room ransacked, so they arrived before she could explain.
The police chief, Knox's brother Nash Morgan, tells Naomi that the only way to keep Waylay out of Child Protec ve Services is to take guardianship (CPS).
Knox takes Naomi and Waylay to Tina's trailer outside town because the hotel door lock is broken. Naomi, "running on fumes," agrees.
Evic on no ces, overflowing garbage cans, pizza boxes, and bourbon bo les li er the trailer. Knox offers Naomi and Waylay a place to stay as long as they need when Naomi is too exhausted to clean the trailer. Knox takes them to a large log cabin with a "storybook co age" behind them. Naomi adores the co age. Knox tells her that Liza J., the landlady, lives in a big house down the road and they will meet a er Naomi and Waylay sleep.
Naomi, s ll groggy, finds Waylay ea ng a PB&J sandwich and drinking a soda in the kitchen. Waylay asks Naomi why her arms and knees are scraped as they share peanut bu er. Naomi says she climbed out of a church basement window without explaining.
Naomi thinks she should be honeymooning in Paris as she and Waylay bike to town. Naomi finds her wedding money at the grocery store. Naomi buys fruits and vegetables for Waylay. She no ces the staring. Tina shopli ed. A er shopping, Sherry Fiasco approaches Naomi and offers her a job as a server at Honky Tonk, a local tavern: "Can you deliver beer and be generally charming?" Naomi accepts.
Summary Knox growls when his brother Nash brings Naomi news. The brothers fight suddenly: “Fists were how they se led countless arguments for decades”. Naomi stops the fight in a sundress. Knox is uncertain about this outsider. Naomi is unique. Nash tells Naomi Warner Dennison III of Long Island reported her car stolen two days ago. Naomi, embarrassed, admits Warner gave her the car.
Naomi enjoys Knox's grandmother Liza J.'s scrappiness and generous hospitality at her landlady's dinner. Knox admires Naomi's sundress as she eats meatloaf.
Liza J. shows Naomi the house a er dinner. Liza J. confronts Naomi in the dark study about the town's rumors that she is a runaway bride. Naomi admits it, so ened by hospitality and alcohol. Liza J. offers her and Waylay the co age rent-free.
Liza J. warns Naomi about Knox and Nash. The brothers fight over Naomi during dinner. Nash gives Naomi a permanent guardianship brochure. Naomi shudders at "permanent." Nash informs her that Tina has a new boyfriend from a Washington crime syndicate. Nash assures her that even if she returned, a court would unlikely grant her custody of the child she abandoned.
While sipping coffee on the co age deck, Naomi tries to establish a rou ne. Knox urinates next door, shocking Naomi. Naomi observes Knox's physicality with "a full ten seconds of open-mouthed ogling."
Waylay visits the library to check her email. Sloane, the library's saucy, unconven onal librarian, helps Naomi use a computer. Naomi is shocked when her ex-fiancé cancels their joint credit cards. She emails her parents, who are on a cruise, to say she is in Virginia, okay, and that marrying Warner would have been a mistake. She informs her close friend Stef, who planned the elaborate wedding, about Waylay.
He works. Naomi keeps him thinking. He arrives at Whiskey Clipper, his barbershop and apartment complex. He purchased these proper es two years a er winning the state lo ery. He looks at his framed family photos in his office. He regrets their split. "Another example of how rela onships end". He finds engagement news on Naomi's Google search. He is impressed by her photos but dismisses her for having anything to do with a straight-laced man who "ironed his pants".
Naomi's first night at Honky Tonk is a challenge. Naomi handles the locals with ease. Her "grumpy, urina ng neighbor" bothers her. Naomi discovers Knox owns the bar when he arrives. The bar needs her, but Knox is unhappy. While adjus ng to working together, sparks fly. One of the servers points Naomi to a rowdy table in the corner and says they're hers.
Knox can see Naomi "stru ng her high-class ass" at Honky Tonk. "She had expecta ons and long-term plans." A er 40, he thought he was done with rela onships, but Naomi made him reconsider. Knox protects Naomi from a drunken regular.
Nash assures Naomi he resolved the grand the auto issue. He informs her that a chop shop near Washington found her car in pieces. He provides a ride home.
Knox fantasizes about pinning Naomi against the wall and kissing her, assuring his brother that he takes care of his employees. Naomi leaves at the shi 's end, though. A er he tells her he's not always an "asshole" and that "a quick fuck" wouldn't sa sfy her, she reconsiders. Weeks have passed since Naomi and Waylay met. Naomi buys Liza J. and Waylay pizza with her ps. Liza J. a empts to explain her "mule-headed" grandsons' behavior over lunch. When Knox won the lo ery, their rela onship sours, she tells Naomi. Mysteriously, the $11 million changed everything. Working part- me in his businesses, Knox lived comfortably. Liza J. hopes Naomi will convince Knox to leave bachelorhood. Naomi visits Whiskey Clipper a er lunch. Naomi experiences an "annoying pulse of desire" while watching Knox cut hair.
Sloane and her niece Chloe invite the town to a potluck picnic. Knox joins the picnic a er Knox's basset hound runs next door. What is "simmering" behind Naomi's smoky, hazel eyes unse les him? Knox struggles to get her alone due to his brother's pestering. Waylay and Naomi discuss Naomi's school friendship concerns when they're alone. Knox guarantees her and Naomi's safety.
Naomi recoils and warns him to mind his own business. She says, "I don't need anyone else." Nash arranges a surprise mee ng with the CPS agent about Waylay's guardianship.
Naomi tells Waylay they're going shopping for school clothes two days later Naomi worries about money and knows she should sell her Long Island house, but that would mean giving up "that dream." Naomi agrees to let Knox drive them to the mall since she doesn't have a car. She's surprised when he joins them and shops generously. Over Naomi's objec ons, he buys Waylay's clothes, Naomi's underwear, and a phone. Naomi no ces how many women in the mall ogle Knox. Naomi no ces Knox's erec on while shopping for her pants and goes into "five-alarm arousal." Knox warns Naomi on the way home from shopping that a New Yorker asked about her in the café.
A wine-bearing man greets them at Naomi's co age. Naomi's best friend, gay entrepreneur Stefan Liao, is Stef. He flew in to check on Naomi a er canceling the wedding. Naomi introduces him to Waylay and Knox. Knox leaves uncertain of his response. Naomi thanks him and kisses him.
Stef and Naomi talk about their wedding a er Waylay falls asleep. Stef tells Naomi he never cared for Warner and only wishes she let him help her escape. He's shocked when she denies sleeping with her "grumpy next-door neighbor."
Knox wakes up the next morning to Stef's coffee. Knox needs Stef's Naomi update. He tells him Naomi spent her life trying to be the perfect daughter, sister, and friend to make up for her twin's behavior. Stef advises Knox that Naomi doesn't need a "heavy" rela onship that "will get messy". Stef promises he'll regret hur ng Naomi. Naomi enjoys "ge ng her hands on a disaster and making it shine." He advises Knox not to undervalue her. Stef departs.
Naomi and Waylay are offered makeovers by Stef at the Whiskey Clipper One stylist, Jeremiah, interests Stef. Waylay tells Stef and Naomi that her mother cut her hair short as a punishment. Naomi realizes her sister took
Waylay's pride. Knox tells Waylay that her aunt Naomi is not like that and that she should come to get him if anyone picks on her again. Naomi exclaims, “The man's hotness just escalated into underwear-mel ng hotness.”
Naomi cuts her hair "stylish and short," shedding Warner's long hair. She spontaneously emails her parents about her granddaughter. Naomi looks 10 years younger with her new hairstyle. She discovers the bar's backroom poker game. The men's ps are good. Naomi, in a short skirt, is energe c. Lucien, Knox's vola le childhood friend, plays a role. Knox storms in and demands Naomi leave. He pins her between him and the door and orders her out. She desires. Knox's call interrupts their kiss.
The bar receives his brother. Nash checks on Knox and Lucien at the poker game, and Lucien assures him everything is fine. He even jokes about helping the Morgan brothers "bury the hatchet". Lucien invites Knox to dinner the next night. Nash tells Knox before he leaves that Tina is running with a boyfriend who is trying to start a massive stolen goods business in Washington.
A er drinking, Knox resumes the poker game. Naomi is now at the table, easing his concerns. She's using her winnings. Winning $22,000 with a high straight. Naomi enchants the table, so everyone contributes. Naomi leaves Knox.
Twenty-two thousand dollars richer, Naomi returns to Honky Tonk. Lucien is asked why Knox and his brother are always figh ng. Lucien tells Naomi the brothers are opposite and stubborn. He tells her their feud started when Knox won the lo ery and gave his brother a por on of his winnings. Nash gave the money to the police department to build a new sta on, refusing to be a charity case.
Stef calls Naomi to tell her Nash was shot and taken to the hospital. Naomi is hospitalized. Knox tells her to go home and to find "the motherfucking bastard who did this to his brother." Naomi embraces Knox and calls them both "idiots" for their lo ery winnings dispute. A er his brother's surgery, Knox kisses Naomi before leaving.
Knox tells his brother, s ll groggy a er surgery, that Naomi thinks their money dispute is ridiculous. A er sleeping, he leaves. Knox and Lucien inves gate Nash's assailant. They discover Nash was le for dead at a traffic stop. They'll find out who did it. Knox exits.
Knox's banging wakes Naomi. Knox's "hard and demanding mouth" kisses her. Naomi cooperates. Knox's erec on is "arousing and in mida ng" as he probes between her legs. Naomi's oral sex is "magic." First, of many orgasms, her body explodes. They make love furiously and orgasm as she guides him inside her.
Naomi wakes up to find Knox asleep next to her. He "looked so peaceful and so sexy," she says. A knock comes while she makes coffee. Amanda and Lou were anxious to meet their granddaughter. Knox comes to the stairs, s ll naked, as Naomi lets them in. Amanda applauds Knox.
Naomi introduces Knox and tells her parents they're not in love. Knox says a er dressing, “You raised a smart, beau ful, stubborn woman.” Naomi takes Knox outside to tell him they need to act like a couple. Before they can decide, CPS arrives.
Knox likes the idea of faking a rela onship to help Naomi. He checks in with the police about his brother. Nash pulled over a stolen car whose driver/shooter fled. He returns to Naomi's for Stef's free-flowing lunch. Waylay swims in Naomi's creek.
Knox and Amanda talk on the porch. She says her daughter has never been impulsive or unpredictable. She cares only for others. Her ex-fiancé exploited her willingness to be controlled.
Amanda and Lou love their granddaughter, especially since her mother abandoned her. Knox is cap vated by Naomi's appearance from the creek where she swam with Waylay. She kisses and touches his erec on. Later, she'll give him more.
Naomi starts her Honky Tonk shi . She wants a car with poker winnings. Other servers know she and Knox had sex and want details. She is star ng to feel good about her life when Sloane texts her that Waylay is being singled out by her teacher. Naomi immediately confronts Mrs. Felch at school. “Way is being treated the way she deserves to be treated,” Mrs. Felch says, surprising Naomi. Naomi no ces someone else in the classroom before responding.
When Knox arrives at Honky Tonk, the staff informs him of the school's message. Knox knows Tina slept with her husband a few months earlier, unlike Naomi. Knox rushes to school, convinced Naomi is being duped.
His grandmother and Naomi's parents are in the bar parking lot. Waylay never returned from school, worrying them. They carpool to school. They enter Mrs. Felch's room as she tells Naomi how Tina ruined her life. Waylay in the room relieves them. Mrs. Felch calls Waylay a "juvenile delinquent" like her mother. Naomi says Waylay will be expelled from her class because
she has no right to take out her anger on her. “You and Waylay both deserve be er than the hand you were dealt,” she sympathizes. Naomi tells Waylay to tell her if she needs anything as they leave the school. Knox promises to drive Naomi home a er the night shi at the bar.
Knox skips work and drives them to his high school make-out spot. He tells her she is doing well with Waylay and not to beat herself up over things she cannot control. Kissing leads to sex in his truck. Naomi says, "I feel like being reckless." Their mutual desire amazes her.
They orgasm several mes in the truck. Knox exclaims, "I almost went crosseyed." He feels "born again" a er the final climax.
Knox transports Naomi. Waylay and Liza J. are alone tonight. Naomi is unsure if this is a rela onship or great sex. She worries about town gossip. Knox only wants them to sleep. They finally sleep together.
Naomi wakes up early to get ready before going home. Knox advises locking her doors. Naomi, freshly showered, says she always locks her doors. Knox tells Naomi she doesn't have to be the good girl and make everyone else happy as he watches her get ready to go home and erase any signs of great sex. Naomi disagrees. She doesn't want Knox's rela onship to hurt her Waylay guardianship pe on.
Naomi returns to the co age to find Stef making Waylay and her parent's breakfast. Her father suggests car shopping. Liza J. tells her Nash is home from the hospital today.
Naomi confides in Stef. “Did it ever occur to you that this may be your chance to start living a life you choose?” Stef asks her to stop overanalyzing. Waylay overhears them and asks if Naomi and Knox "are a thing". Knox and Knox's dog make s'mores that night.
September. Mrs. Felch abruptly re res, Naomi enjoys her new SUV, and work goes well. Knox is becoming her confidant. Her ex-boyfriend emails her reques ng a second chance. Stef says forget him.
Naomi works a part- me job at the library one a ernoon. Reading about paren ng. Flint is a red-haired stranger. He is new in town and needs help se ng up his computer, so he asks Naomi if she knows anyone with computer skills. Since Naomi is good with electronics, she almost gives him Waylay's email address, but something about him stops her. Knox arrives as he leaves.
Knox offers Naomi lunch. She tells Knox that this rela onship is becoming real and asks what happens next. Knox dodges. Naomi's phone rings as they leave. Nash tells her he thinks Tina may return because she le something. Tina's fingerprints were found on a trailer park storage unit broken into over the weekend. Grainy surveillance camera footage shows someone who looks like Tina but has long hair, likely a wig, wearing one of Naomi's new Knox-bought dresses. Tina wore her twin's dress in high school to avoid trouble, but she broke into Naomi's co age. Someone, possibly Waylay, let her in since the locks were never jimmied. Naomi immediately worries that her sister will take Waylay or affect her guardianship applica on.
Naomi, Liza J., Stef, and Naomi's parents go to Waylay's soccer game the following Saturday. Without Knox, they grill Naomi about her romance, especially the sex. Naomi's mother compliments her on how well she's raising Waylay. Nash shows up. Everyone supports Naomi a er Nash reveals Tina's break-in. Nash tells Naomi, “Naomi, you have a lot of people who care about you.”
Knox arrives. Knox and Naomi observe. Waylay curses when a player trips her while scoring. Waylay wins it later. A erward, everyone gets ice cream. This was Naomi's "best day." Domes c violence is referenced in this chapter.
Naomi gently men ons her mother and Tina's recent visit before Waylay goes to a sleepover. Waylay doesn't recall seeing her mother.
Friday nights are louder at the Honky Tonk. When Naomi sees the library's red-haired man alone at the bar, she's confused. Warner Dennison III, Naomi's ex-boyfriend, enters. He yells at Naomi to come home, saying she made her point and he'll forgive her. Naomi insists on finishing. Knox yells, "Take your fucking hands off her," as Warner touches Naomi's wrist. Now”. Warner gets beat while the bar cheers. Knox turns to Naomi, his face "thousand shades of pissed off."
Knox promises Naomi that the bar will be safe if her ex-boyfriend returns. Naomi should knee him in the groin and kick his head when he doubles over. She also gets his office's security code.
When they enter his office, Knox wants to kiss Naomi. Naomi tells of Warner's disastrous engagement. Given Warner's wealth and status, their friends and family assumed they were a perfect match, so she had to play happily. A month before the wedding, Warner accused her of flir ng with a man at a bar.
He pulled her out with his hair. Warner humiliated Naomi by slapping her at the rehearsal dinner a er his snobby mother called the food cheap. “A man doesn't put hands on a woman like that,” Knox says. Ever”. They kiss on his office desk a er hugging him.
Naomi returns home to a ransacked co age. The cabinets, drawers, and shelves are messy, and the bathroom mirror has "bitch" wri en in lips ck. She calls Knox, who orders her out. Naomi says no one's there. Knox, Nash, and Nash decide, “Either the ex or the sister.” Knox's enraged.
Knox takes Naomi and Waylay to Washington. He and Jeremiah from his salon volunteer at Hannah's Place to shave and cut homeless people. Naomi says giving shelter residents new clothes "changes the way they feel about themselves." Naomi realizes how much she loves Knox as she watches his
care for the shelter residents. Duke, a silver-haired bearded man, bothers Knox. Naomi witnesses Knox giving Duke a backpack in the parking lot.
Knox understands the following day. He worries about his rela onship with Naomi.
He considers himself “F.I.N.E.”—freaked out, insecure, neuro c, and emo onal. He invites Naomi to dinner and says they need "to stop this thing" and that "I don't do strings". Naomi doesn't get it. She throws Knox's cash envelope and leaves.
Naomi scolds herself for “picking the wrong fucking guy” again outside the restaurant. Naomi runs a er Knox. The CPS agent unexpectedly visits her co age. Naomi considers lying, but she tells the woman the truth about her day and the emo onal mess she's in between her ex-fiancé and exboyfriend. The agent reassures her that no guardian has a perfect life, Waylay is improving in school, and Naomi is doing well. She tells Naomi to stop worrying about others and start thinking about herself.
Naomi knows she must break up with Waylay and her parents when she gets home. Mom wants her to be happy. She tells Naomi no one would blame her if she didn't seek guardianship of her sister's abandoned daughter, but Naomi assures her mother that she's commi ed to Waylay. She breaks up with Stef, who is vaca oning in Paris, that night. Stef tells her Knox should appreciate her. He says he's leaving Paris immediately.
Knox argues with himself at home with his dog. His parents' framed photo reminds him of how happy they were before his father became an alcoholic. The family disintegrated a er his mother's car accident.
Lucien joins him. Knox dumped Naomi? They can't believe it. “You're the stupidest son of a bitch in the state,” Nash says. Knox argues that he is not interested in rela onships, cannot change, and was always about sex. Nash reminds him of when he tried to force lo ery money on him and claims Knox can't fix or sustain things. “When you love somebody, you show up.” Even if I'm scared. It's you.” Her father arrives. He calls Knox a coward and says he broke up with Naomi because he cares too much and is afraid.
The Honky Tonk gang cheers up "New Naomi," Naomi. Stef encourages her with a to-do list.
Naomi makes Waylay and herself breakfast two mornings a er the breakup. She reassures Waylay about Knox. "I'm sorry Knox was such a douche waffle," Waylay says. Naomi suggests a spontaneous bonfire for Waylay's early birthday party that night.
Knox's sad. He can't sleep and hates Honky Tonk. He passes his grandmother's house while biking. A er seeing all the cars, he stops. In the backyard, he sees his friends and family celebra ng Naomi's victory. He sees her again and is astonished by her beauty. He taunts his brother so that he can now act. Nash comes close. “You don't have to be an asshole,” he says. Waylay breaks Knox's heart when she says, "Aunt Naomi'n me are used to people not wan ng us". He leaves, crying.
Naomi prepares for Knox at Honky Tonk by calling herself the "ice queen swan." Knox says sorry. Naomi is unresponsive. During the shi , a seduc ve woman in suede, s le o-heeled boots, and painted-on jeans kisses Knox. Lina, Knox's ex-girlfriend, approaches Naomi. Naomi meets her at a biker bar to talk.
Lina recounts her 10-year-old rela onship with Knox, who dumped her a er a month of sex-crazed behavior. Sloane joins them, and Naomi shares her concerns about Waylay's guardianship given Waylay's a achment to Knox. They're talking about their broken rela onships when Lucien and Nash arrive.
Lucien and Nash arrive as the women's babysi ers. Naomi describes her life as "wrong or broken or a mess." Tables empathize. Lina recommends Naomi be strong for Waylay. Since their father's alcoholism, Knox has been an emo onal wreck, Nash tells her
Nash tells Naomi he's been looking into the red-haired stranger from the library while several women use the restroom. The coincidence of the man's visit and Naomi's co age break-in bothers Nash. Naomi texts Tina to offer assistance, believing her sister is involved. That's her only way out.
Knox calls. Naomi, drunk and exasperated, tells him to lose her number and that tomorrow will be her last night at Honky Tonk. Hanging up, her heart breaks.
Knox asks Naomi to visit his office during her break the following day. He carries her there a er she declines. He finally tells her about his rela onship with his father, Duke, whom they met at the Washington shelter for the homeless. Knox talks to Naomi about his father's alcoholism. Naomi gets a disturbing text from Waylay telling her she's in trouble while in the bar restroom. Tina awaits Naomi at home. She declares, "He's got Waylay." Naomi gets into Naomi's car without knowing who "he" is. Tina shackles Naomi before leaving. "For the smart one, you sure are stupid," Tina says. Tina drives Naomi to a Washington industrial park. Naomi is uncuffed and taken to a warehouse. Naomi sees Waylay gagged and bound to a chair. Naomi spots the library's red-haired stranger. Introducing himself as Duncan Hugo.
Naomi discovers that the warehouse's appliances, TVs, and designer clothes are stolen and that Hugo is the son of a Washington crime lord. This opera on marks Hugo's break from his father's organiza on. Hugo explains that Tina, whom Naomi assumes is his girlfriend, hid a computer flash drive with crucial opera on informa on in her apartment, but Waylay found it and hid it. He threatens to shoot Naomi to get the flash drive.
