Your presence is requested for a royal banquet in the heart of medieval York !

Start your experience in the ancient fortification of Monk Bar, on the city walls, where you will be treated to an exclusive drink and canapé reception and the chance to explore the impact that the last Plantagenet monarch, Richard III, had on York. Then, you will be escorted on a regal progress through the city streets to a real hidden gem, the medieval townhouse of Barley Hall; where you will experience a sumptuous banquet fit for a king! You will also get the chance to examine historic texts and learn about the exotic diets of royalty. Plus there will be an opportunity to explore our latest exhibition; Power & Glory: York in the Time of Henry VIII.

Saturday 26th September Stamford Bridge Battlefield Walk

10:30 | Meet at Shallows Car Park, Viking Road YO41 1BS Adult £4.50, Conc £3.50 A chance to visit the site of the last great Viking battle fought on English soil, where a king was slain and an extraordinary act of courage saw a lone warrior hold an entire army at bay!

Pre-booking essential Outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear are essential. Please be aware that this walk may involve uneven surfaces and crossing busy roads.

Thursday 29th October A Brief History of Light

12:00 - 16:00 | DIG Normal Admission Prices Apply + £1 per take home activity Join us at DIG and explore a brief history of light, in this, the UNESCO International Year of Light.

We’ll be discovering how to make candles, how light is used in pinhole cameras and how to illuminate a room with a potato!

Friday 30th - Saturday 31st October Halloween at the Hall: The Horrible Haunting of Henry VIII 17:00 - 20:00 | Barley Hall | Adult £6.50, Child £4.50 Suitable for children. Tour starts every 30 minutes.

Admission includes hot chocolate for all and gift bag for each child.

A bone-chilling evening awaits you at atmospheric Barley Hall; where King Henry VIII is plagued by ghosts from his past!

Explore the medieval townhouse by candlelight and see what this cast of creepy Tudor characters has in store this Halloween. A fun evening for kids, both big and small, with surprises and frights galore.

We’ll be looking at the tales of the people who have lived in York since the Roman era and the archaeological treasures they left behind; interpreting their stories with drawings… what will you create?

Our ever popular and award-winning volunteers from the Barley Hall Servants are back to offer an extra treat for visitors, with living history showcasing the life of servants from the late medieval period.

Expect to see costumed displays and demonstrations giving a rare glimpse of social history brought to life in a fantastic setting.

10:00 - 17:00 daily | Barley Hall | Adult £2, Conc £1, Family of Four £5 Traders will gather at our beautiful medieval townhouse, Barley Hall, for an intimate festive shopping experience.

With hand crafted items and unique gifts on offer; as well as the chance to see the Hall decorated for Christmas you are in for a treat! Once you’ve finished your shopping, sit back and enjoy some winter warmers: including mulled wine, ale and some delicious snacks at our cosy tavern bar.
