EnerSolar+Brasil 2014: opportunities for the offer of clean renewable energy alternatives The third edition of the EnerSolar + Brasil | International Fair for Solar Energy Technologies was held from July 16-18, 2014 at the Centro de Exposições Imigrantes, in São Paulo. The event, organized by the Grupo Cipa Fiera Milano and SMARTENERGY SRL, brought together the entire supply chain of the thermal and photovoltaic solar energy industry, inverters and other kinds of renewable energy, and sought to promote the development of the industry and exhibit alternatives in sustainable energy sources to the market.

183.1 GW, 65 percent of which corresponding to the hydropower industry, 14.2% to thermoelectric and nuclear, and 20.8% to renewable sources. On the international ranking, China leads the installation of photovoltaic projects which sum up 12 GW. Next is Japan with 10.5 GW, followed by the United States with 6.0 GW. Brazil comes in 10th with 2 MW (megawatts) per year.

Over three days, the event gathered around 4,800 visitors who witnessed technologies, services and solutions for commercial and residential use produced by the major players of the industry. More than 130 exhibitors were at the trade show, including domestic and foreign brands, such as Italy, United States, Germany, Spain and China.

The discussions on the development of the industry have also attracted the public’s attention over the three-day conference. The panel “Technological challenges for the development of the Brazilian market for solar heaters” was presented by Marcelo Mesquita, Abrava-Dasol manager, who highlighted that the solar industry lacks subsides to become more available in Brazil. “The current potential of the Brazilian market for solar heating is 60 percent for residencies, 18 percent for commerce, 3 per cent for industry, and the rest for the sector of services, which means that the domestic use is quite promising. However, the implementation of this technology in residences, in general, requires qualified technical assistance and certified products so as to guarantee efficiency and, above all, the consumers’ safety”.

At the opening ceremony were present the CEO of the Grupo Cipa Fiera Milano, Marco Antonio Mastrandonakis; EnerSolar director Arthur Ribeiro; the president of Italcam, Edoardo Pollastri; the Council chairman of ABSOLAR, Nelson Colaferro and the secretary of ABENS - Brazilian Association of solar Energy, and also Trajano Viana, professor at Cefet-RJ in addition to representatives of related organizations. The EnerSolar director, Arthur Ribeiro highlighted Brazil’s great potential, especially in the solar and wind energy, since the country has one of the world’s biggest rates of sunlight incidence and continuous winds in large parts of its territory. “Solar energy is still embryonic in the country but it already shows an extensive market to be discovered”. Ecoenergy discusses the future of renewable energy sources and the risks of the energy crisis in the country In a parallel event to EnerSolar there was an extensive agenda of lectures, seminars and workshops, as part of the IV Ecoenergy | Congress of Clean Renewable Technologies for Energy Generation. With the subject matter “Renewable energy minimizing the risks of an energy crisis”, the event counted over 500 participants and over 30 lectures addressed by government authorities, researchers and industry experts who discussed alternatives and routes for the use of renewable energy in Brazil. Addressing three different segments – thermal solar, renewable and photovoltaic energy - the Ecoenergy Congress discussed the rational employ of these sources and stimulated the use of new technologies. Among the main addressed topics were the technological challenges for the development of the market, incentives to the use of renewable energies, domestic market projections, and future investments, besides projects, research and successful cases. Opportunities and challenges in the field of renewable energies The fourth edition of the Congress showed the potential of Brazilian market for the implementation of sustainable energy sources and pointed out the great challenges of the sector faces to consolidate itself in the Brazilian energy matrix. Bureaucracy and regulation, shortage of funding to leverage projects, the need for more effective public policies, and skilled labor were mentioned by experts as the main inhibitors of investments in this industry. Studies conducted by the Energy Research Company (EPE) from the Federal Government, point out that by 2022, the country will reach

Discussion promotes the development of the industry

Another debate, promoted by Juarez Lopes, member of the coordination of the National Plan for Energy - EPE, addressed the possibility of combined generation of solar photovoltaic and wind energy, emphasizing that in some areas of the country it is advisable to operate with more than one source of energy, where the use of joint resources may be more efficient. Igor Fukushiro, coordinator of the Absolar working team, detailed the opportunities with the solar photovoltaic energy auctions in the Brazilian market, warning that the companies should see to a series of requirements to take part in the official auction such as: present documents on landholding and topography of the area, indexes of solar radiation, and solar license, among others. Ruberval Baldini, president of Abeama, talked on “The Brazilian market for renewable energies” and addressed issues related to the main challenges of the industry such as tax barriers in the implementation of equipment, storage systems, and solar energy generation. According to Baldini, the cost/benefit ratio and the high taxes in the equipment import are still obstacles for citizens and corporations, in general, to think of changing their forms of getting energy. EnerSolar hosts the I Italo-Brazilian Seminar for Renewable energies The Italcam (Italo-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in São Paulo) has promoted mutual relations between Brazil and Italy with the I Italo-Brazilian Seminar for Renewable Energies. The meeting featured five panels conducted by experts that addressed issues related to technological, fiscal and managing aspects of the industry. Francesco Paternó, Italcam general secretary has talked on the integration projects between Italian and Brazilian technologies, and the use of clean energies. For him, the lack of apposite legislation has been hindering public and private initiatives to operate in combination in the introduction and research on the types of renewable energies.
